Mr. Willard VanSant

Mr. Willard C. "Buddy" VanSant, 86, of Frederick, died peacefully at home Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Wilcom VanSant.

He was born April 28, 1922 in Mount Airy, as the son of the late James R. and Bessie G. Roderick VanSant. Mr. VanSant attended Forest Grove School from 1925 to 1936, Mount Airy High School from 1936 to 1941, and LaSalle Extension University, Chicago, Ill. in 1941. He was a long-time dairy farmer and started the first dairy milking parlor and hay dryer in Frederick County.

Mr. VanSant later retired from Capital Milk Producers after 27 years as an operating engineer. He also worked for Gladhill Tractor Mart for many years servicing silo unloaders for the farming community.

Mr. VanSant was a former 4-H Club leader for many years and served as superintendent of the 4-H Sheep Department at the Frederick Fair for 18 years. He was a member of the United Suffolk Sheep Association, Frederick County Farm Bureau, Elks Lodge # 684, National AARP and local AARP # 436. He also loved to travel.

Surviving beside his wife are three children, Douglas C. VanSant and wife Yvonne of Jefferson, Brenda J. Ogg and husband Donald of Frederick, Bruce S. VanSant and wife Donna of Frederick; five grandchildren, Denny Ogg and wife Kristy, Diane Ogg, Kristen VanSant Blatner and husband Julius, Daniel VanSant, Katelynn VanSant; and one great-grandchild, Delaney Ogg. He is also survived by one sister, Geraldine Hyatt of Severna Park and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Rebecca Ward and Eleanor Ferrara.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at the funeral home. Deacon Skip Manley will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Denny Ogg, Daniel VanSant, Donald Ogg Jr., James Hyatt Alfred Wiles and Dente Brashears.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Madeline Seeger

Mrs. Madeline Estelle Seeger, 95, of Frederick, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Northampton Manor Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Earl Robert Seeger, who died Feb. 23, 1985.

She was born in Frederick on Oct. 27, 1913, a daughter of the late George W. and Margaret Myrtle Fagan Shipley.

Mrs. Seeger was a homemaker for most of her life and a longtime member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick.

Surviving her is one niece, Adeline E. Mort, of Frederick, and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles F. "Ink" Shipley and one sister, Adelaide S. Rowe.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Rev. David Albertson, Mission pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Online condolences may be shared with her family at KeeneyBasford.com.

In lieu of flowers, memory contributions may be made in her name to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Ms. Mercella Bucknor

Mercella Doreen Bucknor (Payne), of Frederick, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at the Kline Hospice House. She is survived by her four children, Yvonne, Alison, Ryan and Aretha; seven sisters and eight brothers and 10 grandchildren; nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, at Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home, 110 W. South St., Frederick. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 899 Swallowtail Road, off Jefferson Pike, Frederick.

Interment at the Harmony Memorial Park.

Arrangements are by Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home.

Mr. Larry King

Larry E. King, 68, of Metamora, Ill., passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, while surrounded by family and friends. He went to be with his Lord after a two and a half year courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born July 16, 1940, in Frederick, to Dorsey and Ruth Keeney King. He married his partner and best friend, Laurie Mitchell, on Aug. 9, 1997.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

He is survived by his wife; son, Bradley (Jennelle) King, of Apex, N.C.; and his step-daughter, Wendy Orr, of Peoria. He is further survived by three brothers, Tom (Jane) King, Jimmy (Doris) King and Marlin (Karen) King, all of Maryland; as well as two sisters, Lois King, of Pennsylvania, and Eleanor Dewire, of Washington state; along with many nieces and nephews. He was also blessed with six grandchildren, Matt, Amanda and Rachel King, Hayley and Holli Caley, and Bajianna Montgomery.

Larry grew up on his family's dairy farm in Frederick. After high school, he joined the Brethren Service. He attended McPherson College in Kansas and later finished his education at ISU and Bradley University, earning degrees in mechanical engineering and botany.

He worked at WABCO until he started his own business in 1972 -- King and Associates. He was accomplished at whatever he did, from building homes to race car engines. He was most proud of the car dealerships he designed and built in Peoria, Ill.; El Paso, Texas; Pontiac, Ill.; Morton, Ill.; Decatur, Ill.; Springfield, Ill.; Taylorville, Ill.; Blair, Neb.; Elkhart, Ind.; and Radcliff, Ky.

He loved to fish and race his No. 21 Dodge Viper. He was proud of the track record he set in his class at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in 2006. He loved his "shop" where he could fix or make anything. But, most of all, he loved his family.

Special thanks to Johnny for being such a faithful friend. He was the greatest husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. We will miss him so much.

Through his illness, he grew to love Jesus and became a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Peoria.

Join his family to celebrate his life. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Bush Creek Church of the Brethren in Monrovia. Graveside services will follow at Mount Olivet cemetery in Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church Building Fund, Trust in Hope Foundation or Illinois Cancer Care.

Mrs. Linda LuCree Cunningham

Linda LuCree Cunningham, 53, of New Market, died in her home Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008.

She was born Dec. 16, 1955, in New London, Conn., to Roseanne Mestre and the late William Marion LuCree Jr.

She was the loving wife of Martin Thomas Cunningham Jr., whom she married Sept. 25, 1993, in St. Mary's County.

She graduated from Laurel High School in Laurel, Maryland, Class of 1973, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from Bowie State University in 1988.

She worked for several years as a freelance commercial interior decorator for various businesses and corporations. She worked for the Washington-based law firm McKenna, Connor & Cuneo as a legal assistant until 1993. She was recently employed by the Frederick County school system at Deer Crossing Elementary School as an instructional assistant for special needs children.

First and foremost, she was a mother. By far, being mother to William Marion Cunningham and Andrew Martin Cunningham was paramount in her life. She was kind, deeply religious and selfless, always putting family first.

She was gifted in many ways. She created a beautiful home with her unique interior decorating style. She was sought after by many as a decorative consultant because of her obvious talent. She was also a masterful gardener and landscaper. The grounds of her home, reflecting these passions, were a showplace.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her infant son, Daniel Thomas Cunningham.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Martin Thomas Cunningham Jr.; sons, William Marion Cunningham and Andrew Martin Cunningham; and siblings, Roxanne Dawn Stadelmeyer and husband, John, of Saraland, Ala., Nancy LuCree Krauss and husband, James, of Owings, and Rebecca Mary Stream and husband, Ernest, of Frederick. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends for a viewing and prayer from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, MD 20872.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, in St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, Libertytown.

Interment will follow in All Souls cemetery, Germantown.

Mrs. Betty Rudasill

Mrs. Betty Grubb Rudasill, 87, of Frederick, and formerly of Poolesville, died peacefully Monday, Dec. 22, 2008.

She was the loving wife of the late Lewis Rudasill.

Born March 10, 1921, in Poolesville, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Bettie Padgett Grubb.

Betty was active with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Upper Montgomery County Fire Department and a manager of First National Bank in Poolesville, now M&T; Bank.

Surviving is one sister, Ethel G. Shannon, and one brother, Raymond Lloyd Grubb (Thelma), both of Frederick; two nieces, Linda Shannon Roof (Phil), and Peggy Grubb Kinna (Larry); two nephews, Daniel S. Shannon (Nancy), and Rick Grubb (Lynn); and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Memorial United Methodist Church, 17821 Elgin Road, Poolesville, MD 20837. The Rev. Ken Fell will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Upper Montgomery County Fire Department, P.O. Box 8, Beallsville, MD 20839.

Arrangements are by Hilton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Patricia Lilly

Patricia Catherine Lilly, 90, of Aberdeen, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008.

She was the beloved wife of the late Edwin Orval Lilly for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Lilly is also survived by her children, Robert Lilly and wife, Cecilia, of Frederick, Mary P. Fitzgerald, of Elkton, Ellen A. Foreman and husband, Paul, of Westminster, Dorothy Paugh and husband, Allen, of Bowie, and Edward Lilly of Elkton. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lilly was a Women's Army Corps veteran of World War II, a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church for more than 52 years, and the Aberdeen Golden Age Club. She worked in the community at public schools teaching ESOL.

Family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, in the Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home, P.A., 333 S. Parke St., Aberdeen. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, in St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 257 S. Law St., Aberdeen.

Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Lilly's memory may be made to the hospice of one's choice.

Mrs. Hazel I. Ford

Mrs. Hazel I. (Jensen) Ford, 82, of Frederick, and former long time resident of Upper Marlboro, died Dec. 25, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Leonard James Ford.

Mrs. Ford was a member of St. Joseph's on Carrollton Manor Catholic Church.

She was employed in administration for the Prince Georges County Board of Education, retiring after 25 years of service. She was a member of the Kappa Phi Gamma sorority. She was an active member of the SLOGGS, with whom she enjoyed traveling and socializing. Mrs. Ford was an accomplished writer, writing her own memoirs, and sharing the printed edition with her family and friends. She also wrote articles for the magazine Buckinghams Voice. She was an artist in oils and watercolors and a very talented quilter.

Surviving are three children, Janice F. Hall and husband, James T. Hall Jr., of Frederick, Barbara M. Ford, of Cambridge, Mass., Mark W. Ford, of Upper Marlboro; two grandchildren, Karen A. Hall Chapman and husband, Brandon K., and James A. Hall; a sister, Cora Marion Dykesten and husband, Archie Dean Dykesten; a special niece, Mary Alice Mills and husband, William, and their family; and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Vern E. Jensen.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's on Carrollton Manor Church, 5843 Manor Woods Road, Buckeystown. Interment at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7 in Maryland Veterans cemetery, Cheltenham.

Mrs. Teresa Edna Tyler

Mrs. Teresa Edna Tyler, 83, of Mount Airy, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown. She was the wife of the late Richard Tyler.

Born May 25, 1925, in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late Thomas R. Jr. and Nellie Clay Nalley.

Teresa worked as a caregiver for area families and was also a homemaker.

Surviving are her children, Katie Harich and husband, Rusty, of Mount Airy, Richard T. Tyler, of Columbia, and James Hill, of Brunswick; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jeannie Welty.

She was preceded in death by two children, Billy Bradford and Linda LaForce.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Providence Methodist cemetery, Kemptown.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Crabbs

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Crabbs, 93, of Union Bridge, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at Carroll Hospice Dove House, Westminster. Born Sept. 26, 1915, in Middleburg, she was the daughter of the late Ross Reuben and Emma Stansbury Wilhide. She was the wife of G. Scott Crabbs who died in 1996.

Mrs. Crabbs was a 1932 graduate of Elmer A. Wolfe High School, Union Bridge. She was a member of Mount Union Lutheran Church where she formerly served as assistant organist, treasurer and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the WELCA. In her early adult years she was employed for two years at the office of the Carroll County Clerk of the Court, and then for six years as a secretary with Carroll County Board of Education. From 1946 to 1959, she and her husband farmed in Middleburg, then moved to Frederick County where she was employed for 16 years with the Frederick County Board of Education, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Woodsboro Food and Friends.

Mrs. Crabbs enjoyed a ministry of typing notes to send with greeting cards to her friends, playing the piano, crocheting, craft sewing, gardening, playing dominoes and spending time with her family.

Surviving are a daughter, Joan C. Hayden and husband, Eugene, near Union Bridge; two grandchildren, Joanne M. Bowen and husband, Aaron, near Union Bridge, and Joseph M. Hayden, of Chugwater, Wyo.; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Mattison, Lance Hayden, Daniel Bowen and Emily Bowen; and a great-great-granddaughter, Riley Mattison.

Mrs. Crabbs was the last of her immediate family, being predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Louise Crabbs in 1941; a sister, Rosellen Lesight in 2005 and two brothers, Albert S. Wilhide in 1995, and Earle R. Wilhide in 2008.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Mount Union Lutheran Church, 5000 Middleburg Road, Taneytown, with the Rev. David Bare, interim pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Union cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Union Lutheran Church, c/o Claude Bohn, 1250 Hapes Mill Road, Taneytown, MD 21787 or to Carroll Hospice Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
