Mrs. Vivian B. Browning

Mrs. Vivian B. Browning, 85, of Monrovia, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Mount Airy. She was the wife of the late Charles H. Browning Sr.

Born July 23, 1923, in Browningsville, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Rosa Lewis Barnes.

Mrs. Browning was a member of Providence United Methodist Church in Kemptown where she was on numerous church committees. She was also a Sunday school teacher. She was a past president of the women's association at Browningsville, United Methodist Church. Vivian was an artist and had a love for music and was a singer in a quartet called The Barnes Girls.

She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution; Eastern Star Chapter 95, Mount Airy; and the Republican Women's Club. She was also active in the Damascus Senior Center. Before her retirement she worked for the family business, Browning Pools.

Surviving are two children, Nancy Browning, of Monrovia, and Charles H. Browning Jr. and wife, Patricia, of Woodbine; grandchildren, Belinda Pickett and husband, Scott, Clifton Bennett and wife, Stacey, Charles Browning III and wife, Kathleen, Duane Browning and wife, Amy, and Aaron Browning and wife, Maria; great-grandchildren, Amber Pickett, Clifton Bennett Jr., Amelia Browning, Caroline Browning, Karrina Browning, Dean Browning, Sabrina Browning and Christian Browning; and two sisters, Dorothy Burdette and Louise Duvall, both of Damascus. Mrs. Browning was preceded in death by a sister, Mazie Rebert.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Providence United Methodist Church, 3735 Kemptown Church Road, Monrovia. The Rev. Donna L. Herritt will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. John Thomas Harwood

Mr. John Thomas Harwood, 78, of Frederick, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of 46 years to Genevieve Pasierb "Genny" Harwood. They were married on June 2, 1962.

He was born near Jefferson, on Aug. 16, 1930, a son of the late George M. and May S. Zimmerman Harwood. He was the stepson of the late Edna Fulmer Harwood.

Mr. Harwood was a graduate of Frederick High School class of 1948 and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was retired after 36 years with the United States Postal Service, having worked at the Frederick Post Office.

Mr. Harwood was a member of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick. He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his entire family, especially his grandchildren. He loved working in his garden and was an avid Washington Redskins fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his three children, Theresa H. Fisher, of Middletown, Thomas J. Harwood and wife, Laura, of Yellow Springs, and Karen H. Hoffman and husband, Dan, of Middletown; one sister, Helen Harshman, of Myersville; and seven grandchildren, Calvin and Carly Fisher, Breann and Brent Harwood, and Jenna, Chase and Brynn Hoffman. He will also be remembered by a special cousin, Mary Clark, of Frederick; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, George Harwood; and three sisters, Kay Gulledge, Virginia Harwood and Margaret Mobley.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick. The Rev. Richard Murphy will be the celebrant. Mrs. Ruth Brown

Mrs. Ruth (Brandenburg) Brown, 82, of Crestwood Village, Frederick, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, as a result of a massive stroke. She was born Jan. 19, 1926, in Kemptown, the daughter of the late B. Claytus and Leah M. Brandenburg. She was the wife of Richard F. Brown, and the couple recently celebrated 59 years of marriage.

Mrs. Brown was a long time resident of Silver Spring, prior to moving to Crestwood Village in 1988, after her husband retired. She was employed by the Social Security Administration for several years prior to the birth of their daughter, Patricia, in 1957. She was a member of the Glenmont United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Richard F. Brown; and their daughter, Patricia Ann Wiegel, and fianc?, Jeffery R. Myers, of Hedgesville, W.Va. Mrs. Brown is also survived by her sister, Connie (Brandenburg) Glaze of Clarksburg; one brother, Lloyd C. Brandenburg and wife, Marlene, of Kemptown, a sister-in-law, Audrey (Mullinix) Brandenburg, of Frederick; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Bradley Carlton Brandenburg; and brother-in-law, John R. Glaze.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at the Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, with the Rev. Stephen Ricketts of the Damascus United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be at the Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Serving as pallbearers will be Jeffery Myers, David Brandenburg, Mark Brandenburg, Robert Brandenburg, Bruce Connelly, Allen Hawse, Michael Hawse and Clark Warfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a memorial contribution, in the name of Ruth Brandenburg Brown, be made to the American Heart Association, 415 N. Charles St., Baltimore MD 21201.

Mr. Samuel E. Widger

Mr. Samuel "Sam" E. Widger, 73, of Frederick, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at his home. He was the husband of Sharon Baldwin Widger.

Born Oct. 15, 1935, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Esther Clark Widger Drayer and James Widger.

Mr. Widger served his country in the U.S. Navy. Sam loved spending time with his family, music and shopping.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Melanie Klein and husband, Jeffrey Klein, of Urbana, Robin Vechery and husband, Col. James Vechery, of Wichita, Kan., and Heather Sozio and husband, Michael Sozio, of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Gregory Klein and wife, Amber, Ashleigh Biddinger and husband, Kristofer, Taylor Vechery, Starner Vechery, Marie Vechery, Angelina Sozio and Simone Sozio; a great-grandson, Dalton Biddinger; a sister, Patricia Lamb; and two brothers, Boyd Widger and Dennis Widger. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He will also be remembered by his dog "Muffy."

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Widger.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday evening in the Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Mike Watson officiating.

Interment will be private.

Mr. Joseph A. Boyer Jr.

Mr. Joseph A. Boyer Jr., 74, of Brunswick, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Cleo Amelia Cline Boyer.

Born Sept. 10, 1934, in Point of Rocks, he was a son of the late Joseph A. Sr. and Elizabeth Minnick Boyer. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator with Genstar in Frederick for 37 years until his retirement, and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown. He is survived by one daughter, Lisa A. Dintaman, of Brunswick; one grandson, Andrew Dintaman, of Brunswick; one brother, Lloyd Boyer and wife, Mary, of Sheperdstown, W.Va.; and special friend, Clifford Van Winkle, of Brunswick.

He was predeceased by two grandsons, John and Daniel Dintaman.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, from the funeral home. The Rev. Kathy Vitalis Hoffman, his pastor, will officiate. Interment will be made in Zion Lutheran cemetery, Middletown.

Mr. Wade "Reds" H. Sheriff Jr.

Mr. Wade "Reds" H. Sheriff Jr., 84, of Mount Airy, formerly of Ashton, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband for 65 years to M. Elizabeth; loving father of four daughters, Cathy Hobbs and husband, David, Nanci Pope, Vicki Stroup and husband, Donald, and Pamela Sheriff; cherished grandfather of eight, David Allen Hobbs, Mary Beth Kingsley, Scott Thompson, Kasey Stroup, Courtney Pope, Megan Green, Kari Colson and Kevin Stroup; and adored great-grandfather of five, Lucas and Hope Kingsley, Wesley and Ben Hobbs, and Ryder Dean.

He was a dedicated electrician for E.C. Ernst, business manager of IBEW Local 26, and part-owner of the formerly family-owned business, "Family Flair Hairstylist." Wade was a member of the credit union for Local 26 and the Elks Lodge in Rockville. During the 65 years with Local 26, he served on the examining board, executive board and supported the credit union. After retiring, he remained very active in the organization and attended the retirees monthly meetings. He was 'thinking green' long before many by recycling any aluminum container, creating a compost of any food waste and always separating paper products. Wade had a passion for gardening, bowling, golfing, bingo, bridge, poker, 'Hand 'n Foot', KENO and most importantly, his family.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Ashton United Methodist Church, 17314 New Hampshire Ave., Ashton, MD 20861. Interment immediately followed at Pine Grove cemetery located on South Main Street, Mount Airy.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Children's Hospital Foundation, 111 Michigan Ave., NW, Washington, D.C. 20010; 301-565-8500 and/or Ashton United Methodist Church.

Mr. George O. Gilliam

Mr. George O. Gilliam, 88, of New Market, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Rita Reed Gilliam.

Born March 24, 1920, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ira and Margaret Suiter Gilliam.

Mr. Gilliam retired as a delivery man for Suburban Propane in Rockville after many years. He loved gardening and landscaping his home in Broadway, Va.

He is survived by three children, Mary Connelly of New Market, George B. Gilliam of Hagerstown, and Steven Gilliam of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Gilliam.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Rockville.

Mr. Mark Sain

Mr. Mark Harrison Sain, 70, of Damascus, died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at his residence. He was the husband of Mrs. Julie Anne Martin Sain, his wife of 46 years.

Born April 4, 1938, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Ulysses Grant II and Mildred Gertrude Marquardt Sain. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was serving at the time the Berlin Wall was erected in 1961.

Mr. Sain was a devoted husband and father, who not only served his country, but also his church and community. He was an active member of Damascus United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees and helped with many projects. Additionally, he was an active member of the Damascus Lions Club and Friends of the Library.

Surviving besides his wife are his daughters, Susan Searles and Kathy Giroux; three grandchildren; a sister, Carol Harrison, eight nieces and nephews; and nine grandnieces and grandnephews.

Friends may call at the Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30. The Damascus Lions Club will have a memorial service at the funeral home at 8 p.m.Tuesday. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at his church, Damascus United Methodist Church, 9700 New Church St., Damascus. The Rev. Walter G. Edmonds, assisted by Thomas Kaylor, will officiate. Interment will be in Damascus Methodist cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Sain's name to his church; Damascus HELP, P.O. Box 126, Damascus, MD 20872; the Damascus Lions Foundation, P.O. Box 267, Damascus, MD 20872; or the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 8501 LaSalle Road, Towson, MD 21286.

Ms. Rebecca Sue Myers

Rebecca Sue Myers, 61, of Mount Airy, died peacefully Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2008, at Brinton Woods in Winfield.

She was born Dec. 1, 1947, in Frederick, the daughter of the late Dr. Lyndon B. Myers and the late Mary Lawyer Myers of Mount Airy.

When Becky was born with Down syndrome, her parents were advised to institutionalize. Instead they and a small group of parents from Carroll County fought to provide educational opportunities for their disabled children, and in 1955 the first class was operational in a small building in Wildwood Park in Mount Airy. Mary Myers was the teacher and the children were bused back and forth in a new station wagon that was donated by the Mount Airy Lions Club.

Becky lived at home with her parents and then with her sister and her family for five years, and in 1989 moved to an assisted living unit run by Target Community and Educational Services in Westminster.

Over the years, Becky attended school in Johnsville and the Carroll County Center for Exceptional Children. She worked for the Carroll County Association for Retarded Citizens and then CHANGE. She also attended the Westminster Senior Center and Family Active Day in Westminster.

Becky made friends everywhere she went, shaking hands, introducing herself and asking your name. She never missed a gentleman wearing a "nice tie." She knew all the clerks from Wal-Mart to Safeway (College Square), where she needed to visit her favorite friend, a cashier, almost daily.

Surviving her are sisters, Mary Lynn Kuhn, of Mount Airy, Martha Jane and husband, Ed Brown, of Hedgesville, W.Va., Sara and husband, Leslie Monk, of Leigh-on-Sea, England, and Polly Ann Mazcko, of Berlin, Md.; her brother, Lyndon L. Myers, of Braddock Heights; her nieces and nephews, Matthew and Lyndon T. Myers, Dr. Cathy Brown and Sue Brown, John Paul and Mary Mazcko. Becky was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Dr. Bern J. Kuhn, and "B.J. nephew" Bernie Kuhn Jr.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to CHANGE Inc., 115 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157 or Target Community and Educational Services Inc., 110 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157. Arrangements are by Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A.

Mrs. Joan Angleberger

Mrs. Joan E. Angleberger, 63, of Adamstown, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008. She was the loving wife of 34 years to Gene Angleberger.

Born Oct. 27, 1945, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Merhl 'Doc' and Betty Kirby Perkins.

Mrs. Angleberger was a lifetime resident of Frederick and a member of All Saints Episcopal Church of Frederick. She enjoyed dancing, crocheting and her time spent with her dogs Joe Boy and Jazzy.

In addition to her husband, Gene, Mrs. Angleberger is survived by daughters, Holly Huff and husband, Mike, of Bowie, Lorie Huff and husband, Tim, of Waldorf, and Taunya Thomas and husband, Steven, of Frederick; grandchildren, Heather, Crystal and Christopher; two great-grandchildren; and a special aunt, Jane Wetzel of Adamstown. Mrs. Angleberger was preceded in death by one sister, Kay Rowe.

Funeral services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 4141 N. Henderson Road, Suite 3, Arlington, VA 22203.

Mr. Donald Sharrer Sr.

Mr. Donald Francis Sharrer Sr., 90, of Frederick, passed away with his loving family by his side on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at the College View Center, Frederick. He was the loving husband of 65 years to Katherine Marie Ahalt Sharrer, who died Dec. 8, 2007.

He was born Oct. 7, 1918, in Emmitsburg, and was a son of the late Roy and Bessie Wills Sharrer. He was the last of his immediate family.

Mr. Sharrer proudly served his country during World War II in the 453rd Ordinance Evacuation Company of the United States Army. For most of his life, he worked in sales of Food Service products. He was a longtime member of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Francis Scott Key American Legion Post # 11.

Surviving him are his seven children, Donald F. Sharrer Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Roanoke, Va., Katherine M. Ketterman and husband, George Jr., of Myersville, David M. Sharrer and wife, Beverly, of New Market, Mary V. McCuller and husband, Don. Sr., of Gettysburg, Pa., Sarah B. McCarty and husband, Michael, of Boonsboro, Cecilia A. Clark and husband, Hunter, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. and John M. Sharrer and wife, Staci, of New Market; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Melvin "Snook" Lindsay and wife, Betty, of Leonardtown. He will also be remembered by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Benjamin Ketterman; five brothers; and two sisters.

The family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living of Frederick, for their compassion and care they extended to Dad during his residency there. Also, thanks to the staff at College View Center for taking care of Dad.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick. Rev. Daniel Goulet will be the celebrant.

Interment will be in the Saint Johns cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the St. John's cemetery Fund, 112 E. Second St., Frederick, MD 21701.
