Mrs. Barbara Lawson

Mrs. Barbara Eloise Lawson, 83, of Ranson, W.Va., died Dec. 27, 2008, at Kline Hospice House, Frederick.

She was the daughter of the late John and Florence (Park) Roberts.

She was a member of the Mount Briar First Church of God, Keedysville.

She was the widow of the late Clyde Roy Lawson.

She is survived by three children, Ethel F. Lucas of Keedysville, Linda Keckley of Hagerstown and Clyde E. Lawson of Ranson, W.Va.; three sisters, Esther Woods of Gaithersburg, Sandy Myers of Pennsylvania, Vicky Via of Frederick; two brothers, Melvin Roberts and John Roberts; also six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by four sisters, Jean Williams, Joan Lantz McCracken, Patricia Sonifrank and Mabel Flick.

Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Parklawn cemetery, Rockville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to her church, Mount Briar First Church of God in Keedysville or to Pastor Joe Burdett with Mount Briar.

Infant Kaylee Bentz

Infant Kaylee Ranae Bentz, of Walkersville, died suddenly Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at her home.

Kaylee was born Nov. 14, 2008, in Frederick, as the daughter of Todd and Katie Shoemaker Bentz.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her sister, Lexi Bentz; her brother, Jordyn Bentz; her grandparents, Michael and Sharrel Shoemaker, Genia and Donald Smith, Vicky Singleton and Terry Bentz; great-grandparents, Frances and Bob Shoemaker, Wilhelmina Singleton, Susie Baugher and Elwood Baugher; and special great-aunt, Dolores (Punk) Knott.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home. Rev. Don Dvorak will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Shoemaker, Spencer Shoemaker, Morgan Shoemaker and Branden Riley.

Interment will be in Glade cemetery, Walkersville.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Fisher

Mary Elizabeth Fisher, of Brunswick, departed this life Tuesday, Dec. 23 in Hagerstown. She was the daughter of the late Alice Lavinia Brooks Fisher and Charles Frederick Lee Fisher.

She is survived by one son, George Fisher, of Baltimore; a daughter, Catherine Fisher Myers and husband, Marvin, of Hagerstown; three grandchildren, Prestina M. Mulligan, Russell D. Fisher and Nichelle R. Yeboah; eight great-grandchildren, Shea Fisher, Trey Fisher, Mikaela, Kianna, Cohen, Dakoa, Trenton and Yehaneha Mulligan; and a sister, Ruth Fisher Onley. She was predeceased by one brother, Charles Fisher; and four sisters, Alice Thomas, Lillian Millberry, Pearlean Berkley and Catherine Dorsey. She has numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Her special friends were Ava and Esther at Montevue.--

Mary lived at the Brunswick House for 25 years before being in Assisted Living at the Montevue Home in Frederick. After she became ill, she was transferred to Citizens Nursing Home, and--after a brief hospital stay in December, she was transferred to NMS Nursing Home in Hagerstown, where her daughter worked.

Mary was a member of the Penecostal Church in Brunswick for many years. She loved to walk and she loved her dolls and artificial flowers, and she collected salt and pepper shakers.

Mary will be sadly missed by her caregiver and niece, Mary Onley Hoy, who wishes to thank Montevue Home, Daybreak and Citizens NH and NMS for the loving care they provided. God has now called her to a better place. To God Be The Glory!

Funeral services will be provided by Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at the funeral home. A Christian wake will be held starting at 10. Friends and visitors will greet the family at this time.

Mr. Donald Joseph Long

Mr. Donald Joseph "Bud" Long, 86, of Emmitsburg, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at his home following an extended illness.

Born Aug. 17, 1922, in Motters Station, he was the son of the late Grant Joseph and Emma Grace (Miller) Long. He was the husband of 57 years to Marilyn Roberta (Weddle) Long.

Donald farmed on the family farm in his early years, and later worked for 40 years as a machinist with Thurmont Shoe Factory. He was a member of Incarnation United Church of Christ, Emmitsburg. He loved spending time with his family and especially his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are children, Douglas "Mug" Long and Terry Ryder of Emmitsburg, Tara Elizabeth Myers and husband, Terry, of Fairfield, Pa., Shelly Ann Long and Joseph Stromberg of Fairfield, Pa., Kelly Jo Wantz and husband, Thomas, of Fairfield, Pa.; grandchildren, Steven Long and wife, Michele, of Warfordsburg, Pa., Eric Long of Fairfield, Pa., Thomas Drew Wantz of Fairfield, Pa., Ethan David Long of Sabillasville, and Hannah Camille King of Fairfield, Pa.; great-grandson, Remington Wyatt Long; devoted sister, Doris Joy of Emmitsburg; sisters-in-law, Dot Long of Westminster, and Ethel Long of Taneytown; brother-in-law, Thomas Hoke of Emmitsburg; devoted friends and neighbors, Betty and William Meredith of Emmitsburg; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by children, Donna Jean Long and Carla Denise Long; and by siblings, Beulah Motter, Evelyn Rohrbaugh, Ethel Hoke, Leonard Long, Carl Long and Ralph Long.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, with the Rev. Reginald Rice officiating. Interment will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens cemetery, Frederick. The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to either Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702-0799, or to the American Lung Association, 1840 York Road, Suite M, Lutherville, MD 21093.

Pallbearers will be Drew Wantz, Ethan, Steven and Eric Long, Terry Myers and Joe Strombert.

Mr. James T. Cole

Mr. James T. Cole, 75, of Hendersonville, N.C., and formerly of Boyds, died Wednesday Jan. 28, 2009.

He was the loving husband of Gale M. Cole.

Born May 15, 1933, in Boyds, he was the son of the late Thomas and Bertha Oden Cole.

Surviving besides his wife is one sister, June Houseknecht; two brothers, Charles and Robert Cole; nephews, Rick Houseknecht, Ed, Thomas, Philip, Danny and Christopher Cole; nieces, Susan Derr, Patricia Tracey, Diane Grimes and Michelle Cole; four grand-nephews; and six grand-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Cole.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Barnesville Baptist Church, 17917 Barnesville Road, Barnesville. A viewing will be held one hour prior.

Interment will follow in Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Barnesville Baptist Church or the Middletown Valley Seventh- Day Adventist Church.

Mrs. Margaret Stambaugh

Margaret Alverta "Maggie" Stambaugh, 95, formerly of Uniontown, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Brookfield Manor Assisted Living, Middleburg, after an extended illness.

Born April 6, 1913, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late Carl Lewis and Maggie Farver Lescalleet. She was the wife of Glenn Maurice Stambaugh, who predeceased her in 2005.

Mrs. Stambaugh was a member of Mount Union Lutheran Church. She was formerly employed with H. L. Hartz Clothing Factory and Union Bridge Clothing Factory, retiring in 1970. She enjoyed flowers, sewing and crocheting. In 2003, she became a resident of Country Companions and in January 2006 moved to Brookfield Manor.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Glenna and Harless Reid of Westminster; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph H. Sr. and Jean Stambaugh of Emmitsburg; daughter-in-law, Rosalie M. Griffin of Union Bridge; 12 grandchildren, Howard Tregoning, Ollie Tregoning, Diane Close, Kathie Warner, Carolyn Stoner, Joe Stambaugh Jr., Ralph Stambaugh Jr., Rodney Stambaugh, Rhonda Swartzbaugh, Charles Stambaugh Jr., Tina Shelley and Dwayne Stambaugh; 23 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Anna Schaefer of Alexandria, Va., Lula Layne of Gainesville, Va., Evelyn Jones of New Oxford, Pa., and Frances Wilson of Berlin.

She was predeceased by sons, Ralph M. Stambaugh Sr. in 1988 and Charles Edward Stambaugh in 2002; daughter, Doris Tregoning in 2000; grandson, Randall Stambaugh; and five brothers, Lawrence, Merle, Earl, Sterling and Donald Lescalleet.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge. Rev. Sam Garrett, a retired Assembly of God pastor, will officiate.

Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, Uniontown.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Union Lutheran Church, c/o Claude Bohn, 1250 Hapes Mill Road, Taneytown, MD 21787; or the Building Fund of Gates of Praise Worship Center, 5010 Baltimore Pike, North 97, Littlestown, PA 17340.

Mr. James Boles

Mr. James Keith Boles, 77, of Monrovia, died Sunday morning, Dec. 28, 2008, at his residence. He was the husband of Sarah Irene Baker Boles, his wife of 53 years.

Born Dec. 9, 1931, in Clarksburg, W.Va., he was a son of the late Charles and Mary Edna Nichols Boles. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War.

Mr. Boles retired from C&P; Telephone Co., now Verizon.

He was a past president and member of the West Virginia State Chapter for the Telephone Pioneers of America. Additionally, he was a third degree member of the Masons at Beckley Lodge, #95, the Scottish Rite, the Shriners of America at Boumi Shrine Temple, Baltimore. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, #482, Clarksburg, W.Va.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, James Ronald Boles of Mullins, W.Va. and Randall Lee Boles of Monrovia; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, Damascus.

Internment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Mr. James Giles

James Edward "Gig" Giles, 85, of Lovettsville, Va., and formerly of Brunswick, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at his home.

He was born Aug. 22, 1923, in Brunswick, to Charles Henry and Alice Monroe Giles.

He was employed by the Loudon County School Board.

Gig is survived by a daughter, Vanassa A. Giles of Lovettsville, Va.; devoted loved one, Mary C. Moten of Lovettsville, Va.; devoted companion, Kenneth G. Watkins of Lovettsville, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews and relatives and friends.

A viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Lyles Funeral Chapel, Purcellville, Va. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home.

Internment will be held at African Methodist Episcopal Church cemetery, Lovettsville.

Dr. Thomas Seess

Thomas Joseph Seess, 76, of Baltimore, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at Stella Maris Hospice in Baltimore.

He was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pa., and grew up in Chicago, Ill. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph Bernard Suess and Anne Branyan Suess Hollowed.

He attended St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, from 1950 to 1952. His studies were interrupted when he was called into active duty in the United States Navy. He served on an aircraft carrier, achieved the grade of Chief Warrant Officer and was honorably discharged in 1954.

He then attended the University of Chicago on the G.I. Bill, and graduated with a bachelor's in history in 1956. He went on to receive a master's in history in 1958, and a Ph.D. in political science in 1971, both from Georgetown University.

During the years of his ongoing graduate studies, and in the years following, he taught geography, American history, American government, political science and constitutional law at St. Joseph's College and Mount Saint Mary's College, the University of Maryland, the University of Baltimore Law School and York College.

In later years, he worked as a social worker for the Department of Human Resources and assisted many immigrants in succeeding in this country.

His last job before retiring was as a parole and probation officer in Baltimore City, where his clear, steady focus on doing right kept many offenders on the right track. After his retirement, he drove a schoolbus in Baltimore.

During most of the 1980s, he wrote a weekly column, "Constitutional Comment," for the Daily Record, Maryland's law newspaper. He was also a frequent book reviewer and contributor to the Daily Record, and his book reviews and editorials appeared in The (Baltimore) Sun.

He was a natural teacher and a perpetual student. He inspired many of his own students to pursue careers in law and government, and he opened the minds of family and friends to the pleasures of learning about history.

He was an avid hiker and swimmer, spending countless hours on the Appalachian Trail and in local pools and lakes. He loved woodworking, and many family members have sturdy bookcases and beautiful lamps in their homes as a result of his industry. He was a devout, life-long Roman Catholic.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Mary Frances Marshall of Frederick. He is survived by his wife, Pearl Seess of Baltimore; and by his daughters, Annie Marshall of Frederick, Julia Seess of Portland, Ore.; and his granddaughter, Juliana Lufkin of Frederick.

A memorial mass was held Jan. 19, 2008, at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Baltimore.

Mr. Irfan Esendal

Irfan S. Esendal, 87, formerly a Springfield State Hospital Center physician for 27 years, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008.

He was the beloved husband of Gunay Esendal, they were married for 47 years.

He is survived by three daughters, Jasmine Demos, Esin Esendal-Provitera and Aysema Shade; six grandchildren; siblings, Cemil Esendal and Bedia Coral of Istanbul, Turkey.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, 2724 Liberty Road, Sykesville, MD 21784.

Memorials may be made in his honor to the Johns Hopkins Heart Failure Clinic, Outpatient Center, Attn: Edward Kasper, 601 N. Caroline Street, 7th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21287.
