Mr. Herbert Leroy Haynes Jr.

Mr. Herbert Leroy "Roy" Haynes Jr., 72, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at his home, while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle, after an extended battle with COPD.--

Born Jan. 6, 1937, in Washington, he was the son of the late Herbert Leroy Haynes Sr. and the late Gladys May Voigt Haynes Johnson.--

He was a member of Victory Tabernacle, Hedgesville, W.Va., and previously attended the Hancock Assembly of God. He attended Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville. For 28 years, Roy was the owner of H. L. Haynes Construction in Berkeley Springs. Prior to moving to Berkeley Springs, he owned H & H Lock Service in Rockville, and Royal Construction Company in Poolesville. Roy was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He will be greatly missed for the kind deeds he did for others.--

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, B. Yvonne Myers Haynes, at home; son, Richard Alan Haynes, and daughter, Renee Elaine McConnaughey, both of Punta Gorda, Fla.; stepfather, Calvin Johnson of Seymour, Ind., sisters, Dixie Lee Monroe and Sylvia Jeanette Hungerford, both of Germantown; brother, Richard Jerry Haynes Sr., of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; grandsons, Ellery Brian Queen Jr., of Sunrise, Fla., and Richard William McConnaughey of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.--

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at Victory Tabernacle, 34 Victory Lane, Hedgesville, W.Va., with Pastor Carl Clark, and Pastors Lynnie and Ada Ambrose officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, for the convenience of family and friends.--

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25403.--

Mrs. Helen Ann Coolbaugh

Mrs. Helen Ann Coolbaugh, 84, of New Market, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, following a courageous battle with lung cancer, at the Kline Hospice House surrounded by friends and family.

Born Jan. 18, 1925, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen Graeowski Snarski.

Helen was stubborn to the the end. She always insisted on doing things her way, including walking to the ambulance that transported her to the hospice house and once there, frequently kicking out family members so she could go to bed at 7 p.m. every night. She was also an avid watcher of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She was a devoted mother and nana/"Nonnie."

Helen will be deeply missed and is survived by daughter, Robin Stone and husband, Clyde, of Frederick; and devoted grandchildren, Kaitlin, Kelly and Kyle Sullivan. She will also be remembered by Kevin Sullivan of New Market; Ben Nalborczk of New Market; her unborn great granddaughter; and numerous friends and relatives.

Mrs. Coolbaugh was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Coolbaugh, in 1993, and close friend, Gertrude Sullivan, in 2009.

Visitation with family will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, from the funeral home. Deacon John L. Manley will officiate. Interment will be private, and at the convenience of the family.

The family requests that attendees wear green, as it was Helen's favorite color.

The family would like to recognize the staff of the Hospice of Frederick County for their loving care. Specifically, they would like to thank Helen's hospice nurse, Judy; and social worker, Jody; Dr. Eskander; Dr. Gilson; and the staff of the Cancer Therapy Center 3B at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kline Hospice House, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Tomasa V. Daly

Mrs. Tomasa V. "Tomi" Daly, 66, of Woodbine, passed away peacefully at her home Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009. She was the wife of K. Craig Daly, her husband of 43 years.

Born May 11, 1942, in Deming, N.M., she was a teacher's secretary at Glenwood Middle School. Tomi served in the U.S. Army. She enjoyed gardening, and was an avid golfer and a multiple club champion at Westwinds Golf Club in New Market.

Surviving are three sons, Kenneth "Craig" Daly Jr. and wife, Becky, of New Market, Kevin Daly of Newark, Del., and Keith Daly of Westminster; three grandchildren, Sarah Daly, Alex Daly and Emily Daly; a sister, Helen Mendoza; three brothers, Andrew Villa, Steve Villa and Art Villa; and one uncle, Joe Villa.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at the funeral home. The Rev. Kevin Farmer will officiate.

Interment will follow at the Grotto of Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg.

Mr. Harry Whittington

Mr. Harry Lee Whittington, 87, of Frederick, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walkersville. He was the loving husband of Annabelle Baker Whittington.

Born in White Hall, Va., on Aug. 10, 1921, he was a son of the late Lewellyn Laython and Nellie Elizabeth Burke Whittington.

Mr. Whittington proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in New Guinea and had received many ribbons and medals. He was retired after 42 years as a heavy equipment operator for the M.J. Grove Co. in Frederick.

He was a life member of the Amvets Post # 2 in Frederick and the Independent Hose Company. He also was a member of the Burkittsville Ruritan Club and the Edwin C. Creager, Post # 168, American Legion in Thurmont. He attended the Day Break Adult Day Care Center.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Ronald Whittington and wife, Debbie, of Frederick, Dennis Whittington and wife, Margery, of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Shirley A. Almendinger and husband, John, of Dunellen, N.J.; one brother, Lewellyn W. "Pete" Whittington of Hagerstown; five grandchildren, Chris Whittington, Brett Davis, Teri Kissner, Brian Smith and Tamara Lorivener; and three great-grandchildren, Collin Kissner and Megan and Hayley Davis; also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by nine siblings, Henry A. Whittington, Douglas K. Whittington, Betty Randall, D. Louise Wood, Ruth E. Whittington, Lucy M. Swisher, Marie A. Flook, Mary H. Baugher and Virginia Hutzell.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Burnis D. Barrett will officiate.

Interment will be in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick. Pallbearers will be Paul Muehl, Chris Whittington, Brett Davis, Tom Kissner, Carroll Huffer and Charles Diggs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Western Maryland Chapter, 108 Byte Drive, Suite 103, Frederick, MD 21702 or to Day Break Adult Day Care, 7819 Rocky Springs Road, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Clara Chapman

Mrs. Clara R. Chapman, 90, of Frederick and formerly of Johnstown, Pa., died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at the Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walkersville. She was the wife of the late Donald Chapman.

Born in Johnstown, Pa., on Feb. 23, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Mary M. (Claffey) and Bernard F. Snyder. She was a former member of the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Johnstown.

Survivors include her son, Robert Chapman and wife, Jane, of St. Michaels; four grandchildren, Stacy Reno and husband, Adam, of New Market, Robert Chapman and wife, Jennifer, of Marina Del-Rey, Calif., Tammy Shultz and husband, Glenn, of Myersville, and Kim Elser and husband, Troy, of Parkton; nine great-grandchildren, Addison, Colin, Natalie, Glenn, Kylie, Joe, Landen, Jonathan and Keegan. Clara was the last member of her immediate family and had several brothers and sisters precede her in death.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, Walkersville. Father Andy Aaron will serve as celebrant. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, in St. Joseph Catholic Church cemetery, Johnstown, Pa.

Mr. Jan "Chris" Weaver

Jan Christian "Chris" Weaver, 43, of Frederick, passed away at his home on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009.

He was born July 25, 1965, in Takoma Park, to Antje B. (Weaver) Schneider of Surprise, Ariz. and the late Kirk Weaver.

He is survived by his mother and her husband, Morrie Schneider; a sister, Bridget Weaver and nephew, James Forder of Seaford, Del.; a brother, Bruce Weaver and sister-in-law, Margie and niece, Tori of Unionville. He will be fondly remembered by an aunt, Hilda Weaver of New Bern, N.C. and close friends, Lloyd Gregory and Mik Corrigan.

Chris was a talented poet, musician and artist.

A memorial gathering will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, P.A., 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Frederick County Humane Society, 217 W. Patrick St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. Bruno Luscri, Ph.D.

Bruno J. Luscri, Ph.D., 80, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at home of complications from pulmonary fibrosis. He was born in Export, Pa.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Anna Mae (Bucci); son, Christopher; daughter, Donna-Jean (Neal) Keim of Cary, N.C.; precious grandsons, Joshua and Matthew Keim.

Bruno was a member of Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic Church. During the 1970's and 1980's, Bruno appeared in several productions of the Fredericktowne Players.

After a mass of Christian burial at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin, Pittsburgh, Pa., he was laid to rest at Calvary cemetery.

Arrangements were by John F. Slater.

Mrs. Martha Gilbert

Mrs. Martha Schmidt Gilbert, 85, of Westminster, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at the Carroll Hospice Dove House.

Born June 6, 1923, in Sykesville, she was the daughter of the late John Edward and Viola Holman Schmidt. She was the wife of the late Lewis Gilbert, who died in 2001.

Martha was born, raised and lived her entire life in Carroll County. She was a graduate of Strayer Business College. She had worked as a secretary for Carroll County Public Schools in the Superintendent of Schools Office and for the Pupil Personnel Department. She was a long-time member of Deer Park United Methodist Church, Smallwood.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, L. Ronald and Janice Gilbert of Westminster; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer and Yvonne Schmidt of Hayes, Va., and Ernest and Joan Schmidt of Hanover, Pa.; sister, Ruth Green of Finksburg; dear cousin and spouse, Ed and Frannie Holtzner of Catonsville; and grandchildren and spouses, Daniel and Christi Gilbert of Littlestown, Pa., Samuel Gilbert of Manchester, Timothy and Theresa Gilbert of Keymar, Monica and Troy Bowman of Jacobus, Pa., and B.J. and Amy Hanley of Fredericksburg, Va. She is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by siblings, Robert Schmidt and Dorothy Carr.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Deer Park United Methodist Church, Smallwood, with her pastor, the Rev. Basil Day, officiating. Interment will be in Deer Park cemetery, Smallwood.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, at the Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

Those desiring may make memorial donations in her memory to Carroll Hospice Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.

Mr. Joseph Wallace

Joseph Wayne Wallace, 62, of Frederick, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born July 7, 1946, in Sandy Spring, he was the son of the late C.F. Wallace and Margaret Redman Wallace.

Having grown up in Frederick and Baltimore, he began work at Renn-Kirby Pontiac in Frederick. Following his employment there, Mr. Wallace began a long career as an entrepreneur. He was an accomplished businessman, establishing relationships with many close friends through the years from his successful service station and airport service. Mr. Wallace will be remembered for his unique sense of humor, his jokes and pranks. He was highly devoted to his wife, family and his 2-year-old Doberman, Lucy.

Mr. Wallace is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nancy Wallace; his son, Joseph Wallace Jr. and wife, Nadja, and daughter, Wendy Wallace Contardi and husband, Kevin. He was the grandfather of Samantha Wallace, Hannah Wallace, Nicholas Contardi, Katie Contardi, Mary Contardi and Christina Contardi. Mr. Wallace is also survived by brother, James Wallace and wife Darlene, of Spring Hill, Fla.; and sister, Doris Cupino and her son, Jimi Cupino. He will be sorely missed his "coffee buddy," Sarah Soper.

Mr. Wallace was predeceased by six siblings, Ardell Droneburg, Jack Wallace, Charles Wallace, Betty Capino, Jesse Wallace and Fred Wallace.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Monsignor John Dietzenbach will officiate.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. Hilda Knott

Hilda N. Knott, 71, of Mount Airy, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of the late Woodrow "Booty" Hungerford.

Born Aug. 5, 1937, in Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Bud Brewer and Daisy Jacobs, and stepdaughter of the late Elmer Jacobs. Hilda attended Sherwood High School in Montgomery County, and worked as a home health care provider for the Frederick County Dept. of Social Services. She also worked at The Great Frederick Fair every year for 11 years. Her family is grateful for God's gift of Hilda for all the years they had her.

She is survived by five children, Thomas Hungerford and wife, Patty, Evelyn Horner and husband, Ronnie, William Hungerford and wife, Linda, Patricia Nocholson and husband, Edgar, and Mark Ricketts and wife, Crystal; a brother, Elmer Jacobs Jr. and wife, Jeannie; a half-sister, Virginia; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Hungerford Salvermoser; a sister, Mary Stull; and a brother-in-law, Sherman Stull.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. 15N in Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the funeral home. The Rev. Janet I. Comings will officiate.

Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Floral tributes are welcome.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Mrs. Myrtle Rice

Myrtle Estella (Haller) Rice, 102, of formerly of Taney Village, Frederick, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Northampton Manor Health Care Center, Frederick. Born Nov. 30, 1906, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Luther Jr., and Emma Virginia (Geesey) Haller. She was the wife of the late Paul W. Rice Sr., who passed away June 1, 1966.

Mrs. Rice was a longtime member of the Calvary United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Wesleyan Service Guild. She was known for her smile and her spunk. Mrs. Rice spent most of her life in Urbana working as a homemaker. She was also known for her kinklings, salmon cakes and her fried oysters.

Mrs. Rice loved the Orioles and was honored by The Frederick News-Post in the June 15, 2007, edition for her fanhood. She loved her family and friends, particularly her friends at Taney Village.

Surviving family includes her two daughters, Fern Rice Hugglestone and her husband, Arthur, of Frederick, and June Rice Fisher, of Venice, Fla. She is the grandmother of five, Michael Joel Rice of Frederick, Angela Sue Rice Bowles and husband, Carey, of Snellville, Ga., Kara Stacey Hugglestone and her fiancee, Matthew Hernandez, of Half Moon Bay, Calif., Heather Ann Hugglestone and boyfriend, Kim William Davies, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Mark Scott Fisher and wife, Marianne, of Spring Grove, Pa. She is the great-grandmother of Adam John Fisher of Hanover, Pa., and Hope Nicole Miller of Spring Grove, Pa. She is also survived by many caring nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Rice was preceded in death by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul William Rice Jr. and wife, Patricia Bruchey Rice, and all of her siblings, Norman Osborne Haller, Wilber Glenn Haller, Merhl Thomas Haller, George Jacob Haller and Daisy M. Haller Ausherman.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Kenneth R. Dunnington and the Rev. Anjel Scarborough of Calvary United Methodist Church will officiate.

Interment will follow at Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Serving as pallbearers will be Arthur Hugglestone, Michael Rice, Jeffrey Haller, Charles Haller, Norman Haller and Mark Fisher.

In lieu of flowers, contributions maybe made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702 or The Animal Control Division and Shelter, 1832 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21702.
