Mr. Gerald Pendley Jr.

Gerald "Bug" James Pendley Jr., 57, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at INOVA Hospital in Leesburg, Va.

Born in Ranson, W.Va. on Dec. 18, 1951, he was a son of Esther Dillow Pendley, Myersville and the late Gerald J. Pendley Sr. He was employed as truck driver with Southland Concrete Co. in Sterling, Va. He was a member of the Winchester Moose Lodge and was a 1969 graduate of Brunswick High School. He had a passion for music and sang karaoke in the tri-state area.

Surviving, besides his mother, are two daughters, Shawnie Quigley and husband David of Hapers Ferry and Shelly Mills of Harpers Ferry; his girlfriend, Bobbie Gardner of Winchester, Va.; four grandchildren, Shadae Quigley, Samantha Wetzel, Sloane Wetzel, Hunter Hanes; one sister, Pam Summers of Myersville; and two brothers, Terry Pendley and Charles Pendley, both of Frederick.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, from the Harmony Church of the Brethren, 3924 Brethren Church Road, Myersville, MD 21773. Rev. Tracey L. Wiser will officiate.

Interment will be made in the Harmony Church of the Brethren cemetery, Myersville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harmony Church of the Brethren at the above address.

Mr. Donald Cool

Donald Vincent Cool, 74, of Emmitsburg, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at the home of his caregivers — sister and brother-in-law, Frances and George Hemler of Taneytown.

Born Feb. 16, 1934 in Emmitsburg, he was the son of the late George Joseph and Alice (Topper) Cool. He was predeceased by his wife, Olia Ann (Ridenour) Cool.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and retired as a supervisor of the housekeeping department at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg. Donald loved to garden, and was a communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmitsburg.

Surviving are step-sons, Guy Ohler and wife Connie of Emmitsburg, Robert Ohler and wife (Valarie) of Tennessee; step-grandchildren, Matt Ohler of Emmitsburg, Kim Hagan of Thurmont, and Josh Ohler of Tenn.; four step-great-grandchildren; brothers, Albert Cool of Emmitsburg, John Richard Cool of Thurmont, Joseph S. Cool of Emmitsburg; sisters, Sister Angela Cool, D.C., of the Provincial House in Emmitsburg, Mildred Sponseller of Hanover, Pa., Thelma Deatherage of Emmitsburg, and Frances Hemler of Taneytown.

Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Donald was predeceased by siblings, Lewis Cool, Cletus Cool, Allen D. Cool, Louise Peters, and Mary Alice Cool; and by a step-grandson, John Ohler.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Emmitsburg. Rev. Father Paul M. Murphy, C.M. will serve as celebrant.

Inurnment will follow in Weller's United Methodist Church cemetery in Thurmont. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m., until the time of service on Saturday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to either, Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157, or to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg, MD 21727.

Arrangements are by Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, Emmitsburg.

Mrs. Theresa Bohrer

Theresa Neel Bohrer, 90, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 28, 2009, at her home of 50 years, on Long Corner Road, Mount Airy, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Boyds on Nov. 20, 1918. She was the daughter of Joseph Thomas and Laura Dorsey Neel.

She was married for 57 years to the late Benjamin F. Bohrer, whom passed away Jan. 4, 2005.

She worked as a bookkeeper for John Delashmutt in Woodbine, leaving in 1950 to raise her daughters.

She was a devoted member of Howard Chapel-Ridgville United Methodist Church for 46 years. She was a member of the choir, the United Methodist Women and spent many happy hours volunteering for all church activities.

She also spent many years farming and gardening with her husband.

Her greatest joy in life was her family. She served dinner to as many as 16 people after church every Sunday, even when she was well into her 80s.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia L. Schmidt and husband Roland of Mount Airy and Pamela Bohrer Brown and husband Bill of Baltimore. She was the grandmother to Jim Thren and wife Cathy, Michelle Easterday and husband David, Stacey Murphy and husband Mike all of Mount Airy, and Nicolas Brown and Amanda Brown of Baltimore. She was the great-grandmother to Jimmy, Tyler, Jordan and Jacob Thren, Dustin and Tiffani Easterday, Brittany and Ashley Murphy, all of Mount Airy, and Kaden Brown of Baltimore.

She was also survived by her sister, Catherine Lorraine Neel of Mount Airy, whom died Sunday, Feb. 1, and was predeceased by an infant brother.

She will be lovingly remembered by her faithful caregiver, Debbie Ruppert.

She will also be remembered by neighbors, Bud and Betty Lanich; special friends, Kathleen Browning, Janice and Colin Rogers and Delores Ulmer; niece, Sandra Heydemann; goddaughter, Kay Poole; and part-time caregiver, Megan Durbin.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 1, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at the funeral home. Rev. Laura Shultz will officiate.

Interment will be in the Howard Chapel cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jim Thren, David Easterday, Mike Murphy, Nicolas Brown, Jimmy Thren, Tyler Thren, Dustin Easterday and Bud Lanich.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Howard Chapel-Ridgeville United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Sandy Hilderbrand

Sandy Hilderbrand, of Silver Spring, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009.

She was the beloved wife of the late James E. Hilderbrand Jr.; mother of Jamie Hilderbrand, Tracy Harley and Michael Hilderbrand; grandmother of Chase, Dylan, Lindsey, Tifani, Austin, Madison and Taylor. Daughter of Sylvia Duley and the late Archie Curtis; and sister of Carol Remp.

Sandy was predeceased by her grandson, Kyle.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave., Rockville. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at the funeral home.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Montgomery General Hospital Health Foundation, 18101 Prince Philip Drive, Olney, MD 20832.

Mrs. Louraine Knight

Mrs. Louraine Knight, 87, of Mount Airy, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Glade Valley Nursing Center, Walkersville. She was the wife of the late Alexander Knight Sr., who died in 1971.

Born Jan. 6, 1922 in Greene County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Prentis and Ronie Williams Morris. She operated a child care business in her home for more than 30 years. Louraine was a member of the Ridgeville Pentecostal Church where she taught Sunday School and ministered to many for more than 40 years. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, canning and taking care of her home, but most of all she was a dedicated to her church and family; and was proud that she was a saved and born again Christian for more than 68 years.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Nasiatka and husband Stan of Marriottsville; four sons, Alexander Knight Jr. and wife Delores of Mount Airy, Ernie Knight and wife Kitty of Mount Pleasant, Richard Knight and wife Michele of Frederick and Sam Knight and wife Vicki of Mount Airy; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ermond Morris and Lebert Morris both of Front Royal, Va.; two sisters, Frankie Knight of Waldorf and Letha Kenny of Oxen Hill. Mrs. Knight was preceded in death by a son, Roy Knight; two daughters, Barbara Ann Knight and Joanne Knight; a granddaughter, Lindsey Knight; two brothers, Melvin Morris and Buddy Morris; and a sister, Shirley Hamilton.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy; where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, with her son, Rev. Ernest Knight officiating.

Interment will be in Prospect cemetery, Mount Airy.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ridgeville Pentecostal Church, C/O Ernest Knight, 10978 Horseshoe Dr., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mrs. Catherine Neel

Catherine Lorraine Neel, 92, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at the home she shared with her sister, Theresa N. Bohrer on Long Corner Road, Mount Airy.

She was born in Boyds on Dec. 29, 1916. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Thomas and Laura Dorsey Neel.

She was a 1941 graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and went on to earn her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from the University of Maryland.

Lorraine, as she was known to friends, spent most of her adult life in Baltimore. She enjoyed a 40-year career at University of Maryland Hospital, retiring in 1981 as a deputy director of nursing. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the Nursing Honor Society and remained in close touch with friends from the hospital and her nursing days, well into retirement.

She was a devout Catholic and a communicant of St. Michaels Church in Poplar Springs. She was active in the Auxiliary of the Little Sisters of the Poor during her time in Baltimore, and spent many hours in service and spiritual retreats.

Nina, as she was affectionately called by family and close friends, was devoted to family and friends. She participated in the Women's Civic League during her years in Baltimore and for many years attended and helped with the famed Flower Mart. She enjoyed travel and during her retirement traveled to the Caribbean, Hawaii and Alaska, among other places.

Her biggest joy in life was her family. During her working years in Baltimore, she always returned to the family home in Mount Airy to spend weekends, later going to her sister's home in Long Corner, following the passing of her parents.

She felt very connected to her extended family and frequently visited family members in Montgomery and Frederick counties. She documented family history and visited many churches and cemeteries in the area to find the grave sites of members of the Neel and Dorsey families.

She is survived by two nieces, for whom she was a second-mother, Patricia L. Schmidt and husband Roland of Mount Airy and Pamela Bohrer Brown and husband Bill of Baltimore. She was the great-aunt to Jim Thren and wife Cathy, Michelle Easterday and husband David, Stacey Murphy and husband Mike all of Mount Airy, and Nicolas Brown and Amanda Brown of Baltimore. She was the great-great-aunt to Jimmy, Tyler, Jordan and Jacob Thren, Dustin and Tiffani Easterday, Brittany and Ashley Murphy all of Mount Airy and Kaden Brown of Baltimore.

She was preceded in death by a little brother, whom died in infancy and her sister, Theresa, who, died Jan. 28, 2009.

She will be lovingly remembered by her faithful caregiver, Debbie Ruppert and her part-time, caregiver Megan Durbin; as well as friends, Janice and Colin Rogers, Mildred Foster; and cousins, Charles and Lorraine Ridgely, Kay Poole and Etta Spaulding.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Father Michael Ruane will officiate. Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jim Thren, David Easterday, Mike Murphy, Nicolas Brown, Jimmy Thren, Tyler Thren, Dustin Easterday and Bud Lanich.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church, Poplar Springs.

Mr. Russell Horton

Russell Lee Horton, 69, of Martinsburg, W.Va., and formerly of Germantown, passed away Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

He was born Nov. 2, 1939, in Germantown, and was the son of the late Russell H. Horton and Mary Margaret Horton of Germantown.

He was preceded in death by an uncle, Edward Metz of Germantown, and his grandparents, also of Germantown.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda D. Horton.

Lee worked at the old roller skating rink and bowling alley in Gaithersburg, until it closed down. He also went to work at Penn-Jersey auto store as a mechanic for 28 years, then went to work at Montgomery Concrete Inc. of Rockville until he retired.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three brothers, David L. Horton and wife, Jean, of Rogersville, Tenn., Donald A. Horton and wife, Judy, of Urbana, and Gary E. Horton and wife, Dorothy, of Frederick; and his only sister, Mary Ann Cox and husband, Gerald, of Inwood, W.Va. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, a great-niece, great-nephews and also great-great-nieces and nephews.

Lee was a sportsman who loved to hunt and fish.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 6, at Monocacy Valley Church, 9861 Old National Pike, Ijamsville, MD 21754. Pastor Mark VanderMeer will officiate.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Miss Connie Cramer

Miss Connie G. Cramer, 59, of Walkersville, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Mercy Hospital.

Born July 7, 1949, in Baltimore, she was a daughter of the late Merhl G. And Thelma (Fogle) Cramer.

Connie was a graduate of Walkersville High School, Class of 1968. She was employed in administration for 29 years with the Frederick Trading Company. She loved her cat, Maddie, and was an Orioles fan. Connie will be remembered as an energetic, outgoing person.

Surviving are one sister, Yvonne K. Cramer, of Walkersville; four uncles, Charles, Harry, Robert and Paul Cramer; four aunts, Helen Nusbaum, Betty Eyler, Dorothy Buxton and Evelyn Gaver; a dear cousin, Walter Cramer Jr.; special friends, Linda Speak, Linda Smith, and Gary and Peggy Huffmaster. She is also survived by numerous other cousins and family members.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville. Family will receive friends one hour prior to services.

Inurnment to follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Eve Combs

Eve Decker Combs, 90, of McLean, Va., passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009.

She was born in Glen Dean, Ky., on June 1, 1918, as a daughter of Daniel and Ada Poole Decker. Mrs. Combs was married for 46 years to the late Jerry W. Combs Jr., who died in 1990.

During World War II, she served in the Women's Army Corps. She graduated with a bachelor's degree from University of Tennessee in 1948 and taught first grade for 10 years in Alexandria, Va.

Mrs. Combs was a member of McLean Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion Post 270, McLean, Va., and an active volunteer in her community for almost 40 years.

She is survived by her children, Margaret Combs Wales and husband, Leonard Wales, and Elizabeth Combs Randall; grandchildren, Eric Wales, Cecilia Randall and Michael Wales; sisters, Daisy Powell, Beulah Boles and Mary Thomas Ashley; and brother, Bill Decker.

Mrs. Combs was preceded in death by a grandchild, Robert Randall; a son-in-law, George Randall; sisters, Alpha Ramsey and Alma Jeffries; and brothers, Ambers Decker, Adam Decker and Frank Decker.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the time of services at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8, at McLean Baptist Church, 1367 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, VA 22101.

Interment will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, in Arlington National cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McLean Baptist Church, 1367 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, VA 22101; American Heart Association, AmericanHeart.org; or the American Cancer Society, Cancer.org.
