Mrs. June B. Rippeon

Mrs. June B. Rippeon, of Lewistown, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Ira L. "Pete" Rippeon, whom died Nov. 22, 1981.

Born in Lincolnshire, England, she was a daughter of the late M. A. Blackman, R.A. F.-M.B.E. (Member of the British Empire) and Evelyn Booles Blackman.

She attended school in England and the Middle East, where she obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees. She also attended nursing school in London and Dunstable, where she earned her S.F.N. (fever nursing) and S.R.N. (registered nurse) C.N.B. degrees. While nursing in London during the Blitz, she was severely injured. Mrs. Rippeon taught school in Frederick County for a number of years.

A member of All Saints Episcopal Church, in Frederick, she was also a member of The Daughters of the King, and a former member of Elstow Abbey in Bedfordshire, England.

She was a member of the Lewistown Homemakers Club for more than 50 years, serving as president twice, and served as vice president of the Frederick County Homemakers Club two times. She was appointed by three Maryland governors to serve as a member of The Citizens Review Board for Foster Care. For many years, Mrs. Rippeon enjoyed reading, embroidery, knitting and her family.

Surviving is her son, Glenn Patrick Rippeon and wife, Rae Ann, of Lewistown; a daughter-in-law, Delista Ann Rippeon of Lewistown; a grandson, Scott David Rippeon and wife, Rose Ann, of Lewistown; a granddaughter, Jill Marie Wilds and husband, Conely, of Gaithersburg; great-grandchildren, Joshua Scott Rippeon, Sara Catherine Rippeon and Melissa Renee Wilds; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. And Mrs. Patrick Blackman; a sister, Mrs. Peggy Farr; and nieces and nephews, all of England.

She was preceded in death by her son, David I. M. Rippeon; a nephew, Michael Andrew Farr; and a brother-in-law, Derrick Lawton Farr.

Mrs. Rippeon loved her family and friends without reservation and was known as having the "guts" to stand up for what she believed in. In the words of Nurse Cavelle, "before she was shot by the Germans during World War II, standing before God, I must have no hatred or bitterness toward anyone."

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, at which time services will begin with the Rev. Tom Momberg, rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mrs. Rippeon to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, MD 21784 or Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Geraldine Ellis

Geraldine A. Ellis, a native of Independence, La. and a resident of Frederick, peacefully passed on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital at the blessed age of 55. She was a courageous, strong-willed and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

The love and wisdom she imparted to her family will forever remain in their hearts, a legacy to cherish. She was born Nov. 3, 1953, to the union of the late Henry Atkins Jr. and Betty Parker. She was a member of the Capitol High School, Class of 1971 of Baton Rouge, La.

She was gainfully employed throughout her adult life at various financial institutions in multiple states, with her most recent employer being SunTrust Bank, Frederick, where she was a branch assistant.

She was a member of Jackson Chapel U.M.C.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, Terry Ellis of Frederick; two sons, Rodney (Sheronda) Ellis of Houston, Texas, Adrian (Tiffany) Ellis of Frederick; three grandchildren, Marcel E. Mase, Najae G. Ellis, and Aniyah C. Ellis; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lillie R. and Elmore Lewis Jr., Gloria Scott, Laverne and Richard Curtis, all of Baton Rouge; one brother and sister-in-law, Min. Larry (Linda) Parker of Zachary, La.; four sisters-in-law, Delores Aites, Jacqueline (Allen) Collins, Jeanette (Eddie) Smith, Joyce Ellis; two brothers-in-law, Thurman (Cathy) Ellis, George (Johnnie) Evans; two godchildren, Monique L. Richardson and Aubrey P. Smothers; a special niece and her sons, Audrey Y. Ellis, Damon Poydras, and Aubrey Smothers; four aunts, Edna M. Williams, Beulah Dixon, Thelma Parker of Baton Rouge and Nancy Miles of Vacaville, Calif.; one uncle, James G. Ruffin of Baton Rouge, La., and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Atkins Jr., and Cleveland and Betty Smith; one brother, Henry Atkins III; and one sister, Yvonne Smith; mother-in-law, Mamie S. Ellis; grandmother-in-law, Beaulah Stone; and other relatives.

A public viewing will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, with religious services immediately following at New Dimensions Worship Center, 919 N. East St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Interment will be held at Winfield Funeral Home, 7221 Plank Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70811, 225-357-2656.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a Memorial Fund being established for the benefit of her grandchildren, The Geraldine Ellis Memorial Fund, c/o SunTrust Bank, 1700 Rosemont Avenue , Frederick, MD 21701.

Mrs. Gail Kelley

Gail Ernestine Mullican Kelley, 87, of Rockville and more recently a resident of Country Meadows of Frederick, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at College View Center.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Cordell Kelley and daughter, Rita Diane Kelley Williams.

Born Feb. 21, 1921, in Lewisdale, she was the daughter of Ernest Cordell and Mary Etta Kenna Mullican.

Gail was a member of Rockville United Methodist Church and was employed with Montgomery County Board of Education. She did volunteer work as a gray lady at Suburban Hospital.

She is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Jeannette Kelley Seymour and husband, Oliver, David (Bud) of Hedgesville, W.Va., and a son, Ernest Cordell Kelley and wife, Rita, of Towson. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, from the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Dr. Thomas J. Huff, chaplain of Country Meadows.

Interment will be at Hyattstown United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mr. Jerry Shelton

Jerry Wayne Shelton, 63, of Pittsville, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Oct. 27, 1947, he was the son of Clifford Shelton of Walkersville and the late Mildred Shelton, whom predeceased Jerry in 2006.

A graduate of Walkersville High School, Class of 1963 and Hagerstown Business College, Jerry worked 30 years as a hatchery manager with Eastern Shore companies. He was a member of the Delmarva Stroke Club and the Maryland Bass Federation Eastern Region. He loved to camp, fish, hunt and line dance, and was a loving husband, father, brother, brother-in-law and friend to many.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Rinker Shelton; his father, Clifford; children, Terry Shelton and Larry Shelton, both of Delmar, Del., Regina Johnson of Wilson, N.C.; stepchildren, Wade White of Salisbury, Nicole Selby of Summers Cove; special step-granddaughter, Felicia Davis; step-great-grandson, Brodi Davis; and three additional grandchildren. Survivors also include siblings, Barbara Green and husband Bob of Union Bridge, William Shelton and wife Elaine of Baltimore, Carol Wilcom and husband Jerome of Monrovia, Joseph Shelton and wife Terrena of Sanford, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Tommye Easty and Lynn Trevena of Duluth, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at Wicomico Presbyterian Church, Salisbury. Pastor Robert Webster will officiate. Contributions may be made in his memory to Wicomico Presbyterian Church, 129 Broad St., Salisbury, MD 21801.

Mrs. Mary Kraft Gorelick

Mrs. Mary Kraft Gorelick, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She was born in Madison, Wis. on Sept. 6, 1924, as the only daughter in the family of six children born to the late Alphons Kraft and Lena (Niehus) Kraft.

Mary graduated with a bachelor of science degree in home economics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1946 and earned a master's degree in bacteriology in 1948 from the same institution. Subsequently, she moved to Frederick to take a research position at Fort Detrick. While at Detrick, she met and then married Arthur N. Gorelick in 1957, whom died in 1994.

Mary was an avid cook. In younger years, she volunteered extensively, especially with Frederick County Public Schools. She enjoyed gardening, puzzles and a good joke.

She was a long-time member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church.

She is survived by her three children, Robert Gorelick (wife Mariaestela Ortiz) of Frederick, Anne Gorelick Rosenwald (husband James Rosenwald) of Frederick, and Peter Gorelick (wife Karen Gorelick) of Reisterstown; two grandchildren, Laura Rosenwald and Kevin Gorelick; two of her five brothers, Frederick Kraft of Madison, Wis. and Richard Kraft of San Bernardino, Calif.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many warm friends of long standing.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 112 E. Second St., Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mary will be interred in Arlington National cemetery with her husband of 37 years, who was a colonel in the Army Reserves.

Mr. Robert McPherson Jr.

Mr. Robert A. McPherson Jr., 72, of Mount Airy, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Caroline Carr McPherson, who died in 2006.

Born Jan. 16, 1937, in Alexandria, Va., he was the son of the late Robert A. Sr. and Marian Liles McPherson.

Bob's career was spent as the general manager of several hotels; as a limousine driver in the District of Columbia; and as a conference assistant for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He enjoyed playing backgammon, gin, poker and listening to music, as well as taking trips to Williamsburg and Disney World.

Surviving are two children, Caroline Lee McPherson and Robert A. McPherson III, both of Mount Airy; and one brother, Douglas C. McPherson and wife, Betty, Jeanne of Lorton, Va.

A memorial service will held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy.

Interment will be private.

Mrs. Dorothy Herbold

Mrs. Dorothy Ziegler Herbold, of Frederick, passed away Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, 2009, at Northampton Manor after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Baltimore on Dec. 27, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret Minton Ziegler and the loving wife of Charles Frederick Herbold Jr., who passed away in 1958.

She is survived by a son, Charles Frederick Herbold III of Baltimore, and her daughter, Peggy Herbold Fessler and husband, Matthew, of Walkersville. She is also survived by three loving grandsons, Andrew and Matthew Fessler of Walkersville, and Blake Herbold of Westminster.

A graduate of Towson State Teachers College, Mrs. Herbold retired in 1979 after 35 years as a first-grade teacher in Baltimore City and Baltimore County Public Schools. She loved giving each of her students the very best possible start in first grade.

She was a lifelong member of Temple Baptist Church, in Baltimore, serving faithfully as Sunday School superintendent and Vacation Bible School director for many years. After her move to Frederick in 1986, she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Frederick until her passing.

Interment will be private at the Lorraine Park cemetery, Baltimore. There will be no public viewing.

The family request memorial contributions be made in her name to the First Baptist Church, 7040 Bowers Road, Frederick, MD 21702.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Ms. Phyllis Ledford

Phyllis Carol Ledford, 63, of Mount Airy, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at her home after a lengthy illness with cancer.

Born March 6, 1945, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late George Donald and L. Elizabeth Smith Engel. She was the wife of David Aubrey Ledford, her husband of 47 years.

Mrs. Ledford was a member of Locust Grove Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed ocean cruises, flowers, gardening, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are daughter Jeanne Marie Ledford-Johnson and husband, Bennett, of Charles Town, W.Va.; sons, Donald Greg Ledford of Mount Airy, and James Eric Ledford of Frederick; grandchildren, Dustan Ledford, Angela Marie Pegg, Caroline Carlson, Curtis Eric Ledford, Calvin Eric Ledford and Cameron Elizabeth Ledford; great-granddaughter, Destiney Nash; brother, Dennis Mike Engel of New Market; and special friends, Barbara Dove, Patti Ledford, Dwight Topper, Jenny Cage, and Hal and Sharon of San Diego, Calif.

She was predeceased by a son, David Bruce Ledford in 1999; a sister, Beverly Johnson; and a brother, Richard Engel.

A funeral service will be held at noon Friday, Feb. 6, at Locust Grove Church of Brethren. The Rev. Wallace Lusk, retired pastor, will officiate.

Interment will be in Locust Grove cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown.

Mr. Howard Akers

Mr. Howard C. Akers, 83, of Frederick, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at College View Center. He was the husband of the late Bertha E. Righter Akers.

Born March 9, 1925, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late Wilbert and Ida Akers.

Mr. Akers enjoyed NASCAR racing and watching the Dallas Cowboys.

He is survived by two daughters, Joanne and Mary Jane Akers of Frederick; and one niece, Linda Miller. He was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Miles.

The family will receive friends from noon until service time at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

Interment will be in Parklawn cemetery.

Mr. Thomas Kline

Thomas Kline, 83, of Hagerstown and formerly of Wolfsville, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at his home.

Born Aug. 31, 1925, in Wolfsville, he was the son of the late Austin L. and Mary E. (Winfield) Kline.

He was a member of Grossnickle Church of the Brethren of Myersville. He was employed by Victor Products of Hagerstown and Hennesey Products of Chambersburg, Pa.

Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army 3rd Armored Division, serving from November 1943 to November 1945 in the European conflict of World War II. He was wounded in action in Cologne, Germany, and spent seven months in hospitals in England and then transferred to Augusta, Ga. Thomas was awarded the Purple Heart, the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Good Conduct Medal, among other medals.

Thomas was an avid hunter. He particularly enjoyed hunting grouse and was quite the expert at it. He loved spending time in the mountains.

Thomas loved his family and enjoyed all of their special times together. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of almost 65 years, Eleanor Mae (Kipe) Kline, who was his primary caregiver during his lengthy illness.

He is also survived by children, Bonnie Mae Cline and husband, Floyd, of Myersville, Mary Elizabeth Cline and husband, Robert, of Smithsburg, Thomas Samuel Kline and wife, Sue, of Clear Spring, Steven Eugene Kline and wife, Bonnie, of Cascade and Karen Sue Crummitt and husband, Charles, of Jefferson; sister, Annabelle Moser and husband, Carroll, of Harmony; grandchildren, Cathie Clemson and husband, Robert, Mike Cline and wife, Connie, Brian Cline and wife, Wendy, Dana Woods and friend, Jeff, Robert Keller Jr. and wife, Robin, Travis Keller and wife, Renee, Stephanie Smith and husband, Tim, Zachary Kline, Charles (CJ) Crummitt Jr. and Cory Crummitt; stepgrandchildren, Larry Glass Jr., Stacey White and husband, John, and Erica Joyce and friend, Daniel; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Clemson, Daniel Clemson, David (DJ) Woods Jr., Chase Woods, Taylor Cline, Allison Cline, Hayden Keller and Kayla Cline; 16 step-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Quentin Grossnickle; sister-in-law, Juanita Grove; special friends, Arnold Draper, the Rev. Randy Reid and his friends from Hospice of Washington County.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Grossnickle; and brothers, Glenn Kline and Austin Kline Jr.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Randy Reid and Tim Ritchie-Martin will officate. Burial will be in the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren church cemetery with military honors given at the graveside.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, 11301 Meeting House Road, Myersville, MD 21773, Salem United Methodist Church, 12477 Wolfsville Road, Myersville, MD 21773, or Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
