Mr. Robert T. Martin

Mr. Robert T. Martin, 86, of Frederick, passed away at home Friday, Jan. 30, 2009. He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. Martin, and formerly the husband of the late Marjorie Conn Martin.

Born June 1, 1922, in Latrobe, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles D. Martin and Alice Black Morton. Mr. Martin served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, flying in B-24s in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. Serving under Gen. Claire Chennault, Mr. Martin was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, and other commendations for combat service.

After the war, he worked for the Office of Strategic Services, which later became the CIA. Mr. Martin retired from service to his country in September 1973. In his last years he enjoyed duckpin bowling, and won several trophies from the Terrace Lanes Bowling League.

He is survived by a son, a granddaughter, two step-daughters, three stepsons, and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

A funeral service will take place at noon Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. 15N., Frederick.

Interment with military honors will follow in the Veterans Garden of Honor II at Resthaven. Deacon George Sisson will officiate.

Floral tributes are welcome, or donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718 or cancer.org.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Mr. Gregory McDonald

Gregory Allen McDonald, 50, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at his residence.

Born July 21, 1958 at Keyser, W.Va., he was a son of Jacqueline Christine (Davis) Paranich McDonald of Martinsburg and the late John Arnold McDonald of New Creek, W.Va.

Mr. McDonald was employed as a HVAC technician and had worked for Medallion Industries, Masters Inc., and Whitman Heating and Air Conditioning in Virginia. At the time of his death, he was providing health care for his mother in her home. He was also a graduate of Keyser High School and the Mineral County Vocational Technical Center.

Surviving, in addition to his mother are two daughters, Jamie and Denise McDonald, both of Frederick; one son, Derrick Hall of Burlington, W.Va.; a grandson, Bronson Snurr of Frederick; one sister, Jennifer L. Birchem of Chambersburg, Pa.; one brother, Mark S. McDonald of Charles Town, W.Va.; two nephews, Christopher A. McDonald of Bunker Hill, W.Va. and Samuel Birchem of Chambersburg; and a grandnephew, Chase E. McDonald of Bunker Hill. Also surviving are three aunts, Barbara Erickson of Allyn, Wash., Star Myers of Keymar, and Judy Metcalf of Seattle, Wash.; and two uncles, Gregg Davis of Seattle and Ronnie Paranich of Charlotte, N.C.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at the Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel.

Funeral services will be conducted immediately following the visitation at 2 p.m. with Rev. Preston J. Miller officiating.

Interment will be in the Arnold cemetery, Junction, W.Va.

The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the family in care of Jamie McDonald, 10307 Gas House Pike, New Market, MD 21774.

Mrs. Wanda Bowers Rohr

Wanda Grace Bowers Rohr, 81, of Boonsboro and formerly of Yarrowsburg, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at Fahrney-Keedy Home near Boonsboro.

Born June 24, 1927 in Yarrowsburg, she was a daughter of the late John Augusta Bowers Sr. and Eleanor Elizabeth Nokes Bowers.

She was a 1945 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

She was a retired employee of American Optical Co. in Frederick.

She was a member of Brownsville Church of the Brethren where she was a former Sunday school teacher and choir member.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Robert Rohr, whom she married Jan. 1, 1948; two daughters, Donna S. Utterback of Hagerstown and Sheila K. Slifer of Boonsboro; one son, Tim Rohr of Sharpsburg; one sister, Marlene Kelly of Hagerstown; three brothers, James L. Bowers of Boonsboro, Arthur Bowers of Keedysville, and Robert Bowers of Yarrowsburg; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Howser, and one brother, John A. Bowers Jr.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at Brownsville Church of the Brethren. Revs. Alan Smith and Louis Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, Boonsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Road, Brownsville, MD 21715.

Master Ian Matthew Willis

Master Ian Matthew Willis, 13, of Urbana, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Children's Hospital Center, Washington.

Born May 21, 1995, he was the son of Michelle (Cardenas) and Robert L. Willis of Urbana. An eighth-grade honor student at Urbana Middle School, Ian loved to hang out with his friends, playing video games and playing basketball. He recently took to the sport of fencing, where he showed a love for and natural ability. He cherished the time he spent with his pet dog, Bailey, and his three cats, Nemo, Monk and Peaches.

Besides his parents, Ian will be loved and missed by his sister, Emily, of Urbana; his maternal grandparents, John and Sine Marschall of Santa Fe, Texas; his paternal grandparents, Sue and Alfred Willis of Hitchcock, Texas; his paternal uncle and aunts, Andrew Willis and wife, Kimberly, of Friendswood, Texas, and Carrie Campbell of Santa Fe, Texas; his maternal uncle and aunts, Hugo Cardenas Jr., and wife, Julie, of Nashville, Tenn., and Pam Wyly of Marietta, Ga.; several cousins; great aunts and great uncles; and his godparents, Scott and Kristina Hensel of Jacksonville, Fla. Ian was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Hugo Cardenas Sr., in 1973.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where a memorial service celebrating Ian's life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, under the direction of the Rev. Blaine Young.

The family wishes that all friends join them immediately after the services at the Urbana Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, 3602 Urbana Pike, Urbana, for a time of fellowship and reflection.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ian's name may be offered to the Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah 84741-5000.

Master Zachary Weiland

Zachary D. "Zac" Weiland, 15, of Woodbine, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.

Born April 26, 1993, in Baltimore, he was the son of Lisa M. D'Andrea Weiland of Woodbine and Kirk D. Weiland of Westminister.

Zac was in the 10th grade and attended Mount Airy Christian Academy. He played soccer, basketball, flag football and baseball. He was an avid musician and enjoyed playing the acoustic and electric guitar and the piano. He was a member of the Hebron Christian Church in Monrovia. Zac was very active in his church and mission trips, he felt his purpose in being on earth was to win souls to Christ. Zac was all about fun in everything he did, even if it was a chore or task he made it fun.

Surviving in addition to his parents is a sister, Hannah Weiland of Woodbine; maternal grandparents, Deanna and Roger D'Andrea of West Friendship; maternal great-grandmother, Mary Parker of Mount Airy; maternal great-uncle, Alvin D'Andrea of Ellicott City; paternal grandparents, Fran and Ron Weiland of Linthicum; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Clever of Hagerstown; aunts and uncles, Michelle and Mark D'Ascenzo, Denise and Dale Mathis, Mike and Laura D'Andrea, Denise and Dave Jones and Donna and Steve Reichart.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, and again from 2 p.m. until funeral services at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Calvary Assembly of God, 8234 Woodsboro Pike, Walkersville. Pastor Leon Dodson will officiate. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a college fund for Zac's sister. Checks may be made payable to Hannah Weiland, c/o Bank of America, Attn: Paul Purdham, 1 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Ms. Cynthia Ambush

Ms. Cynthia Rae "Cindy" Ambush, 57, of New Market, died peacefully with her family by her side Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at her residence, from complications of lung cancer.

She was born Jan. 3, 1952, in Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Ray and Marabelle Green Brandt.

Cindy had worked as an instructional assistant for over 20 years with the Frederick County Public Schools at Monocacy Middle School and Tuscarora High School and was recently honored by the school systems. She was also very active with the community, in addition to the schools, also with the City of Frederick. She will be sadly missed by many friends.

She is survived by three children, Charles Simms Jr., and Amanda Oney, both of Frederick, and Todd Green, of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Tyler Green, Destiny Simms, Braydon Simms and Ciara Simms.

She will also be remembered by a very special friend, Michelle Bloom, of New Market.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A celebration of Cindy's life will be shared at 2 p.m.

Interment will be private.

Miss June Snyder

Miss June Almira Snyder, 83, of Walkersville, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at the Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a resident for several years. Born April 25, 1925, in Bartholows, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Ernest and Lucy Dorsey Wolfe Snyder.

Miss Snyder had worked for most of her life in the Frederick area as a beautician. She enjoyed reading books, watching sports and she loved animals.

Surviving are two nephews, Michael E. Angleberger and wife, Jane, of Walkersville, and Stephen E. Angleberger and wife, Kathy, of Urbana; two great-nephews, Taylor J. Angeleberger and wife, Kelly, and Michael P. Angleberger. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leon Snyder; and two sisters, Frances Angleberger and Maxine Snyder.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, March 13, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Interment will be in the Marvins Chapel cemetery, Mount Airy.

Mr. Earle Charles Hoover

Mr. Earle Charles Hoover, 75, of Keymar, died Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Carroll Hospice Dove House, Westminster, after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 29, 1933, in Middleburg, he was the son of the late Charles Oscar and Regina Elizabeth Grossnickle Hoover. He was the husband of Esther Bowers Hoover, his wife of 48 years.

Mr. Hoover served in the U.S. Army in Korea and Japan. He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Taneytown, a life member of the Hesson-Snider American Legion Post, Taneytown, and a member of Toy Train Collectors.

He formerly was employed with Donald Six Inc. of Middleburg and then Taney Corporation for 35 years, retiring in 1999. He enjoyed collecting American Flyer trains, traveling, antiques, antique shopping, woodworking and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Kelly Lynn Waltz and husband, Daniel, of Hagerstown; a son, Kenneth Lee Hoover and wife, Julie, of Aspers, Pa.; four grandchildren, Angela and Sarah Waltz and Renee and Alicia Hoover; a great-grandson, Corbin Hoover; a sister, Elizabeth E. Bowers and husband, Wayne, of Quartzsite, Ariz. and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kristine Y. Hoover in 1965.

The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 17.

The funeral service and interment in Grace U.C.C. cemetery will be private.

Mr. Arthur Hess Sr.

Mr. Arthur "Pete" Hess Sr. of Charles Town, W.Va., passed away at Frederick Memorial Hospital on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at the age of 74. He was the loving husband of Shirley Temple Hess, his wife of 53 years.

Pete was born Dec. 26, 1934, in Newhall, W.Va., son of the late Harry Clarence Hess and Lillian Maude Sinter Hess. After growing up and leading a memorable life in Cucumber, W.Va., he joined the Army in 1949. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. With great pride, he attained the rank of master sergeant with the following decorations to his name: Good Conduct Medal w/silver clasp; Army Commendation Medal w/1st Oak leaf cluster; Combat Infantry Badge 2D award; Korean Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal w/1st Oak leaf cluster; Vietnam Service Medal; Bronze Star Medal w/V Device and 1st Oak leaf cluster; Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device; Drill Sergeant Badge; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; 4 Overseas Bars.

After proudly serving in the Army for 24 years, Pete retired to help Shirley raise their four rambunctious teenagers. After living in Rockville, Md., from 1970 to 1976 and Walkersville, Md., from 1976 to 1990, they settled down in Charles Town, W.Va. in 1990.

Never one to sit idle, in 1973, Pete and Shirley managed various HIGH'S convenience stores all over Montgomery and Frederick counties for several years.

Then he went on to serve as head of security for Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, after which he finally retired to spend more time with his family. He thoroughly enjoyed fishing and telling stories from his childhood and Army life, but his real passion in life was spending time with his four children, 11 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and their children and eventually three great-grandchildren.

Besides being survived by his wife, Shirley, he is survived by his three daughters, Tammy Ault and her husband, Ricky, of Brunswick, Teresa Foster and her husband, Jay, of Frederick, Annalisa Geiger and her husband, Roger, of Middletown, his one son, Pete Hess Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Middletown, and one very special niece, Bridget Warfield and her husband, Kyle.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N. in Frederick, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 18.

Interment with military honors will follow in the Veterans Garden of Honor I at Resthaven, with his grandsons, Ricky Ault Jr., Arthur Hess III, Carl Ice, Nick Mowel, Lance Marin, and his son, Pete Hess, serving as pallbearers.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1332 North Halsted St., Suite 201, Chicago, IL 60642. Arrangements by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody P.A. in Frederick.

Ms. Ruth Bozzell

Ruth Viola Bozzell (nee Parker), 69, of Manchester, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at Carroll Hospice-Dove House in Westminster.

She was born Dec. 6, 1939, in Frederick, as the daughter of the late William David Parker and the late Helen Irene Smith Parker-Condon.

She was a nursing assistant for Brinton Woods Nursing Home in Sykesville.

Ms. Bozzell was the mother of Debra Lynn Burkett of Manchester, Rebecca Lynn Wright of Brookneal, Va. and Fred A. Bozzell Jr. of Mount Airy; and sister of Ernest David Parker of Kissimmee, Fla., Laura Louise Joyner of Pennington Gap, Va., William David Parker Jr. of Finksburg, and the late Donald Eugene Parker.

She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and special friends.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A.

Interment will be held in Lake View Memorial Park.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield. Pastor Mark Jones, of Wakefield Valley Bible Church in New Windsor, will officiate.
