Mr. Charles Christian Sr.

Mr. Charles Thomas Leroy Christian Sr., "Bubbles," 65, of Ijamsville, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Kline Hospice House in Mount Airy. He was the loving husband of Christie L. Christian.

Born Dec. 7, 1943, in Hagerstown, he was a son of the late John Calvin and Loma Grace Butler Christian.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Charleen and Cheyenne Christian, both of Ijamsville; a stepson, Eddie Grove of Maryland; son, Charles T.L. Christian Jr. of Gambrills; daughter, Tina Christian of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; lifelong friend and brother, Decon James Smith of Chambersburg, Pa.; sister, D. Lorraine McDaniels of Hagerstown; aunt, Delores Jenkins of Hagerstown; and four nephews.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, MD 20872. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, at the funeral home. Rev. Franklin D. Bishop of Ijamsville United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Ijamsville Methodist cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, at the above address, to defray funeral costs.

Mrs. Lessie Barkdoll

Lessie Primrose Barkdoll, 84, of Middletown, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at her home. She was the wife of the late Fred Barkdoll.

Born in Harrisonburg, Va., July 8, 1924, she was a daughter of the late James Calvin and Bessie Mae Dean Mowbary.

She was a very loving person, especially to her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, Myersville and was a well-known quilter. Her quilts have been sold nationwide.

She is survived by three children, Jeannie Hartman and husband, Bob, of Thurmont, Ronald Barkdoll and wife, Beth, of Urbana, Diane Whitter of Frederick; and the following brothers and sisters, Charles Mowbary of Harrisonburg, Va., Louise Favorite of Hanover, Pa.; Frances Haines of Hanover, Pa.; Roy Mowbary of Arkansas; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

At Mrs. Barkdoll's request, there will be no visitation or service.

Interment will be made in the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren cemetery, Myersville.

Arrangements are by Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Mr. Lewis Shoemaker Jr.

Mr. Lewis R. Shoemaker Jr., 57, of Hagerstown, died suddenly on Sunday, March 15, 2009, at his residence.

Born June 10, 1951, in Olney, he was the son of Pleasant Jane Shoemaker and the late Lewis R. Shoemaker Sr.

Mr. Shoemaker proudly served his country in the United States Army.

Surviving besides his mother are four children, Donald Lawhorne, Chad, Jason and Mandi Shoemaker; three brothers, Thomas, Alan and James Shoemaker and his wife, Janet; four grandchildren, Joshua Johnson Jr., Chellsie Shoemaker, Carlee and Kylie Lawhorne; three nephews, Owen, Edward and Alan Shoemaker Jr.; and one niece, Christina Shoemaker.

Lewis was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Sue Shoemaker.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville (HiltonFH.com), where funeral services will follow at 7 p.m.

Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, in Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to Lewis' grandson, Joshua A. Johnson Jr., c/o Bulldog Federal Credit Union.

Miss Betty Hooper

Miss Betty Louise Hooper, 33, of Cascade, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born July 8, 1975, in Gettysburg, Pa., she was a daughter of Margaret Louise Mercer Hooper of Cascade and the late Frank Hooper Jr.

Miss Hooper was the poster child for the March of Dimes for three years. She was a member of Weller United Methodist Church, Thurmont, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was a Garth Brooks fan. She will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Surviving besides her mother are three brothers, George J. Hooper and wife, Cheryl, of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., David W. Hooper and wife, Betty, of Fairfield, Pa. and Richard Lee Hooper of Thurmont; and a sister, Pamela Jean Hooper of Waynesboro, Pa. Several aunts and uncles and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 20, at the funeral home with her pastor, Rev. Richard Broome officiating.

Interment will be in Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in memory of Miss Hooper to Weller United Methodist Church Building Fund, 101 North Altamont Avenue, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Mrs. Helen Young

Mrs. Helen Brown Young, 95, a well-known resident of Frederick, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at her home on Schley Avenue. She was the beloved wife of W. Meredith S. Young. They were married on Oct. 12, 1943.

Born in Doubs, June 4, 1913, she was the daughter of the late W. Osbie and Ada Melissa Smith Brown.

Mrs. Young was a 1931 graduate of Frederick High School and a 1935 graduate of Hood College. Following her college graduation, she accepted a position at Fredericktown Bank and Trust Company where she met her future husband. She remained with the bank for 41 years, retiring June 30, 1978, as vice president and trust officer. During her career, she made many lifelong friends.

For 65 years, Mrs. Young was a faithful member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a life member of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and she was also a 40-year member of the board of directors of the "G. Frank Thomas Foundation."

Surviving in addition to her husband, are six god-children, Myra Shaff Buskirk, Christina Hanson Weissenborn, Laura Hanson Pino, Richard John Hanson and Andreas Harald John Weissenborn, all of Frederick, and her name sake, Helen Zacha, of Denmark. She is also survived by many close friends and caregivers.

Mrs. Young was preceded in death by three cousins, Neola B. Shaff, William E. Brown and Glenda B. Dudrow.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, in Etchison Memorial Chapel of Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. David J. Albertson, Mission pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Online condolences may be shared with her family at KeeneyBasford.com.

Mrs. Nancy Bikle

Mrs. Nancy Jane Bast Bikle, 84, of Old National Pike, Boonsboro, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 13, 1924, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John Harlan Bast Sr., and Caroline K. Sparrow Bast. Nancy Jane was a 1942 graduate of Boonsboro High School, and a 1945 graduate of the Washington County Hospital School of Nursing.

She had worked as a registered nurse at Washington County Hospital, retiring in 1976. Nancy Jane was a life-time member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boonsboro, where she was active in various capacities over her years of membership. She was a member of the Washington County Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and had volunteered with the Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Nancy Jane is survived by her husband, Josef F. "Chris" Bikle, whom she married March 25, 1946; two sons, Mark A. Bikle and wife, Marie, and Thomas E. Bikle and wife, Lisha, all of Boonsboro; and two grandsons, Matthew C. Bikle and Joshua R. Bikle, both of Boonsboro.

She was preceded in death by one brother, John H. Bast Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boonsboro. The Rev. Joseph I. Donovan III will officiate. Entombment will be in the Boonsboro cemetery Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, Boonsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 64 S. Main St., Boonsboro, MD 21713.

Mrs. Artye Hellner

Mrs. Artye Barbara Reed Hellner, 87, died Saturday, March 14, 2009, in the health care center of Buckingham's Choice in Buckeystown, due to esophageal cancer.

Artye was the daughter of Anna Grebneau and Arthur C. Reed of Los Angeles, Calif. Artye was the devoted wife of Dr. Maurice H. Hellner; beloved mother of Maurine Rosenberg of New York City, Cheryl Hellner of Germantown, and Janet Hellner-Burris of Pittsburgh, Pa. Her son, Charles, preceded her in death in 1974, as did her husband, Maury, in 2005. Artye is survived by grandchildren, Matthew Rosenberg, Cathy Roy, Jon Hall, Kaitlyn and Benjamin Hellner-Burris; and two great-grandchildren, Ian and Matthew Roy.

Artye was a committed church leader who served for many years as the director of the National City Christian Church's Community Children's Ministry for urban children in the Shaw neighborhood in Washington. She was a graduate of UCLA and an accomplished musician and seamstress, as well as a creator of needlepoint art and an avid animal lover.

The memorial service for Artye Hellner will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 3, at Buckingham's Choice in Buckeystown. Memorial donations may be sent to the One Step Program for urban youth at The Christian Church of Wilkinsburg, 748 Wallace Avenue Wilkinsburg, PA 15221, where her daughter, Janet, is the pastor; or the Religious Life Music Fund at Buckingham's Choice (c/o Chaplain, 3200 Baker Circle Adamstown, Maryland 21710).

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mr. Bernard DeGrange

Mr. Bernard Thomas "Rick" DeGrange, 61, of Frederick, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital

Born June 12, 1947, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Harlen W. and Sadie Hurst DeGrange.

Rick had worked as a handyman, delivered newspapers, worked as a custodian for the Frederick County Public Schools and for many years he had worked for the G.L. Bakery in Frederick. He was a member of the Improved Order of Red Men, Chippewa Tribe No. 19, in Frederick.

Surviving him are two children, Laura DeGrange, of Frederick, and Jackson Metz of Hagerstown; one brother, David DeGrange and fiancee, Wanda, of Frederick; three sisters, Shirley Gibbons and husband, Harold, of Frederick, Geraldine Wilson of North Carolina, and Carol Heatherly and husband, Charles, of Frederick; one granddaughter, Brittany; and many nieces and nephews, including a special niece and caregiver, Tina M. Hock, of Frederick. He will also be remembered by a special friend, John Pigott, of Frederick; and his dog, Chi Chi.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William "Bud" DeGrange and Harlen "Muggs" Degrange; and one sister, Patricia Duvall.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 23, from the graveside in the Union Chapel cemetery on Daysville Road, near Libertytown. The Rev. Dr. W. Philip Fogarty will officiate. Mr. Michael Hartley

Mr. Michael Joseph Hartley, of Myrtle Beach, S. C., formerly of Frederick, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009. Born Nov. 3, 1953, he was a son of Jerry and Rita Hartley of Annapolis. He leaves behind his wife, Karen; daughter, Melissa; two stepchildren, Kristen and Kevin Webb; and brother Barry. He was one of Frederick's finest hairdressers, formerly "Mr. Michael's." He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Mr. Robert Fogle

Mr. Robert B. Fogle, 74, of Wolfsville, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 18, 1934, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Burkhard R. and Ruth Stull Fogle.

Bob graduated from Walkersville High School, and was a very active member of Salem United Methodist Church, Wolfsville, where he has served as the Sunday School superintendent and treasurer, taught the men's Sunday School class, was a member of the Board of Trustees and sang in the church choir. He was a member of the North American Rod and Gun Club of Hagerstown, and was on their trap team, and was also a member of the National Rifle Association.

After 34 years of service, Bob retired from Frederick Motor Company, and was wellknown and loved by all of the customers to whom he delivered auto parts.

He enjoyed gardening, reloading shotgun and rifle shells, hunting and collecting model cars, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving Bob is his wife, Doris J. Martin Fogle; three children, Lavena Jenkins and husband, Stephen E., of Artemas, Pa., Robert K. Fogle and wife, Mary K., of Garfield, and Lora S. McGraw and husband, Lee T., of Smithsburg; five grandchildren, Robert K. Fogle Jr., Benjamin P. Swope, Justin M. Fogle, Alyssa D. Fogle and Jason Jenkins and wife, Arlene; one sister, Audrey Blank and husband, Edgar, of Walkersville; and one great-granddaughter, Isabella Jenkins.

Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Salem United Methodist Church, Wolfsville, with Pastor Robert Snyder officiating.

Burial will be in Salem United Methodist cemetery, Wolfsville.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at Ricketts Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 12477 Wolfsville Road, Myersville, MD 21773.

Mr. Maurice Purdum

Mr. Maurice Edwin "Butch" Purdum, 84, of Damascus, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Montgomery General Hospital, Olney. He was the husband of Ruby C. Purdum.

Born March 10, 1925, in Cedar Grove, he was a son of the late Maurice Edward and Julia Elizabeth Watkins Purdum.

Butch graduated from Damascus High School in 1943. After graduation, he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines during World War II. He graduated from Strayer College and worked for the Applied Physics Laboratory of the Johns Hopkins University as an internal auditor until retirement in 1987.

He was active in the Damascus Lions Club and the Damascus American Legion Post 171.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Beth Love of Charlotte, N.C., and Kathy Shirley of Berryville, Va.; a son, Jack Purdum of Boyds; a sister, Louise Pickett of Baltimore; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Butch will also be fondly remembered by Ruby's children, Chuck Burdette of Damascus, and Rebecca Kessell of Monrovia.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Waters; second wife, Charlotte Purdum; daughter, Mary Welch; and grandson, Matthew Purdum.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, 23640 Woodfield Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20882. The Rev. Victoria Karakcheyeva, his pastor, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in Meadowridge Memorial Park, Elkridge.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, at the address provided above.
