Lt. Richard Welch
Lieutenant Richard Lewis Welch, 82, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Northampton Manor Health Care Center. He was the husband of Alice (Alma) Nevin Welch, whom he married
in London in 1951.
Born Feb. 5, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Lewis and Elsie (Barber) Welch. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jean. He attended the University of Ohio.
Richard entered the United States Navy in 1944, serving in the South Pacific at the height of World War II. He served on the USS LST 1028 which on Jan. 10, 1945, was hit by a torpedo during the U.S. invasion of Luzon in the Philippines. He received commendation for taking action to keep the ship seaworthy. He then went on to serve on the USS Nevada from 1945 to 1946 and was present at the Bikini Bomb Tests (Operation Crossroads), the testing of the nuclear bomb. From 1946 until 1951, he served on the USS Columbus.
After the war, Lt. Welch served in London, Naples, Italy, and taught in the Department of Naval Science at the University of Ohio. He returned to Naples and served as Executive Officer of the USS Mattabesset from 1957 to 59. During the years of 1959 to 1961, he served at NATO Command in Naples and in 1961 went on to work at the Pentagon where he was honorable discharged from active service in 1963.
Richard continued to serve in U.S. Naval Intelligence at the Pentagon from 1963 to 1982 both as United States Naval Officer and civilian; culminating in his assignment as the Director of Security Policy Division of Naval Intelligence. He was awarded the United States Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award on June 22, 1970, given by the Chief of Naval Operations. He also received the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement awarded for exceptional service on March 1, 1983, given by then CIA Director William Casey.
After retirement from Naval Intelligence, he served as President of Avanco International which provided management consulting and policy analysis services to the Department of Defense.
A man of faith, he was a communicant and active member of Saint Pius X Parish in Bowie for many years, and until his death, at St. John the Evangelist parish in Frederick. Richard volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul Society, served on SPX, parish council and was a Scout Master and troop leader of Boy Scout Troop 730.
In addition to his wife Alice, survivors include his children, Mary Bowers and husband, James, of Crofton, Rev. Father Richard L. Welch, CSSR of New York, and Teresa Wiggins and husband, Frederick, of Holly Springs, N.C.; three grandchildren, Jason, Sean and Brian; a sister, Nancy Costa of Arizona.
The family would also like to thank the doctors and nurses at Frederick Memorial Hospital and the staff and caregivers at Northampton Manor Health Care Center for their kindness and loving care that Richard received from them.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where a rosary and prayer vigil will be offered at 7 p.m.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 112 E. Second St., Frederick; with Father Richard L. Welch as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow in the St. John Church cemetery.
Memorials may be offered to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 112 E. Second St., Frederick, MD 21701-5305.
Mrs. Mildred Brunner
Mrs. Mildred D. Brunner, born Sept. 3, 1906, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in Baltimore.
She was born in Frederick, as the daughter of the late Professor John W. and Jeannette C. Brunner of Frederick.
She was a faithful member of Quinn Chapel and Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Bowins; survived by granddaughter, Linda McGowens (McArthur) other relatives and friends.
Funeral services Monday, March 23, 2009, at Union Bethel AME Church, 8615 Church Lane, Randallstown. Family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. with funeral services immediately following.
Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, in Fairview cemetery, Frederick.

Mrs. Grace Michael
Mrs. Grace J. Michael, 81, of Frederick, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 20, 1927, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Mae Mercer Tregoning White and the late George W. Tregoning. She was the wife of Mantz K. Michael, her husband of 57 years.
She worked as a seamstress for Sagner Company and Frederick Hosiery Company. She enjoyed homemaking and was an avid bingo player.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Vicky Lynne Gloyd, of Frederick; a granddaughter, Brandy Shaikh and husband, Ali, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; great-granddaughter Alyssa Shaikh; and a sister, Margaret Rice, all of Frederick. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Ronnie Engle and wife, Dottie, of Middletown; and three sisters-in-law, Jane Michael of Walkersville, Janet Michael and husband, Bill, of Frederick and Jacqueline Reese and husband, Frank, of Perry Hall; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Claude, William, George, Lloyd and Charles Tregoning; and four sisters, Evelyn Stull, Edna Mooney, Mary Evans and Bessie Potter.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mrs. Alice V. Hoffmaster
Alice V. Hoffmaster, 100, of Myersville, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Fahrney Keedy Home, Boonsboro.
She was born July 2, 1908, in Old Braddock, and was the daughter of the late Willie C. and Zera L. Culler Mercer.
Alice was the wife of the late Paul L. Hoffmaster, who preceded her in death in 1976.
A longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Myersville, she taught the Sunday School nursery for 55 years and was a member of The Mite Society of St. Paul's.
An avid gardener, Alice loved her flower gardens and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Alice is survived by one daughter, Sandra Stevens and husband, Bob, of Berlin; three grandchildren, Robert T. Stevens IV and wife, Karen R., of Austin, Texas, Alice Ann Williamson and husband, John, of Davidsonville, and Samuel L. Stevens and wife, Anne G., of Lutherville; and five great-grandchildren, Robert T. Stevens V., Scott Stevens, Shelby Stevens, Benjamin Stevens and Patrick Stevens.
She was also preceded in death by her infant daughter, Barbara Lee Hoffmaster.
Funeral services will began at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Ricketts Funeral Home, Myersville. Pastor David Howell and Pastor Mary K. Worrel will officiate.
Burial will be in Zion Lutheran cemetery, Middletown.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m., prior to the service, Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. John Insley
Mr. John Straughn Insley, 91, of Frederick, and currently residing at The Village At Robinwood in Hagerstown, died March 23, 2009. He was the husband of Emily Jeannette Insley.
Mr. Insley was born Jan. 21, 1918 in Bivalve, Md. He was the son of Robert Levin and Mary Louisa Denson Insley. He was the youngest of 11 children and the last of his immediate family. He spent his boyhood on the Eastern Shore of Maryland until the time of his parents' deaths. He then moved to Frederick and resided at the Odd Fellows Home. Following high school graduation, he attended The Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore.
Mr. Insley was an enlisted member of the 115th Infantry of the Maryland National Guard. At the beginning of World War II, he left the 115th Infantry for the American School Center to train as an officer in the United States Army. He later attended Officers Candidate School in England where he became a First Lieutenant with the 29th Infantry Division. He participated in battles and campaigns in Northern France, Rhineland and Normandy (D-day plus one, the second day on Omaha Beach). He returned home a decorated veteran being awarded the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the distinguished Purple Heart.
John Insley was well-known for his family shoe business in Frederick, Insley's Shoes, which he owned and operated for 34 years. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he served as a member of the vestry and the senior choir. He was a member of the Frederick Rotary Club, the Frederick Lions Club, and Francis Scott Key American Legion Post #11, Frederick, and a founding member of the Men's Frederick Coffee Club. He was an avid golfer with memerships at the VFW Golf Club and the Eaglehead Country Club.
Mr. Insley is survived by his wife of 63 years, Emily Jeannette Insley; and their daughters, Suzanne Keller and husband, Donald, of Frederick, and Priscilla Lloyd and husband, Kenneth, of Wilmington, N.C. Also surviving are his five grandchildren, Scott Keller and wife, Jodi, Colyn Keller and wife, Amanda, Kristian Lloyd and wife, Amanda, Sarah Davis and husband, Geoff and Wesley Lloyd. In addition, Mr. Insley has seven great-grandchildren, Corbyn, Coltyn, Camdyn, Kathryn and Lance Keller, all of Pennsylvania; and Dalton Davis and Reagan Lloyd of North Carolina.
A brief memorial service for Mr. Insley will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at St. Paul's Chapel of All Saints Episcopal Church, 106 W. Church St., Frederick. Officiating will be Rev. Thomas W. Claggett III. The family will receive friends at church following the service until 8 p.m.
Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, at St. Mark's cemetery, 4313 St. Marks Road, Petersville.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Washington County, Inc., 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742, or to The Village At Robinwood, 19800 Tranquility Circle, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Mr. Daniel Kemp
Mr. Daniel "Danny" Franklin Kemp, 65, of Thurmont, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at his home.
Born Aug. 4, 1943, in Roundhead, Ohio, he was the son of Mary Magdoline Davis of Charleston, W.Va.
Danny worked as a cable technician for Capital Antenna for 22 years. He was an avid fisherman and loved NASCAR and football.
In addition to his loving mother, he is survived by two sons, Charles Daniel Dills of Charleston, W.Va. and Daniel Clayton Kemp of Baltimore; best friend and brother, Arthur "Dale" Kemp of Thurmont; brother, Larsa Wayne Kemp of New Smyrna, Fla.; and two sisters, Katherine "Sue" Engle of Charleston, W.Va. and Betty Lou Leach of Loris, S.C. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He will also be remembered by his loving companion and best friend, Mary Ellen Kemp of Thurmont and many friends too numerous to name.
Mr. Kemp was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry "Clayton" Kemp and Jerry Lee Kemp.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
Mr. Clay Peyton III
Mr. Clay Carr Peyton III, 53, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at his residence. He was the husband of Rose Y. Bogley.
Born May 22, 1955, in Cheverly, he was the son of Ruth Ferrell Peyton of Falling Waters, W.Va., and the late Clay C. Peyton Jr. He was a bridge and road inspector for an SHA contractor. Clay was an avid fisherman and hunter, but was also a talented artisan known for his handcrafted knives.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two brothers, Joseph Peyton and wife, Jacqueline, of Frederick, and James R. Peyton of Hagerstown; two sisters, Mary Hamilton and husband, Keith, of Salisbury, and Julie McNeill and husband, Barry, of Walkersville; two sisters-in-law, Karen Yuschak of Jefferson and Tina Nesmith and husband, Russ, of Frederick, Pa.; father-in-law, Pete Yuschak of Youngstown, Ohio; and four nephews and three nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

Mr. Raymond Conner
Raymond A. Conner, of Rockville, died Monday, March 23, 2009.
He was the beloved husband of the late Judy Ann Conner; father of Michael R. Conner (Mary Catherine) and David A. Conner Sr. (Gail); brother of William Conner, Robert Conner, Rosalie Perkins, Joyce Conner and the late Owen and Roy Conner; and grandfather of David A. Conner Jr., James Michael Conner, Derrick W. Conner and John David Conner. Mr. Conner is also survived by his seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 27, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave., Rockville, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28. Interment will be held in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Mr. Howard Schoonover Jr.
Howard E. Schoonover Jr. died Wednesday, March 25, 2009. He was the beloved husband of 47 years to Janice L. Schoonover; loving father of Steven P. (Rhonda) and Carey R. (Theresa) Schoonover; brother of Barbara Nieman, Donald Schoonover and Linda Grisso; and grandfather of Jessica and Jenna.
He was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren, Danielle and Adam.

Mrs. Mildred Sanders
Mrs. Mildred Rita Sanders, 84, a resident of Buckingham's Choice, Adamstown, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the health care center. She was the wife of the late John Albert Sanders, Esq., a former prominent Washington attorney.
Born Nov. 4, 1924, in Shenandoah, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ella Markiewicz Karalunas. She graduated in 1945 with her nursing degree from Saint Luke's Nursing School, Philadelphia, Pa., and worked at Saint Luke's Hospital and in health care for a number of years.
She was married
to her husband June 7, 1947, and in later years did volunteer counseling work with Melbrook Center in Olney. She was a member of Saint Timothy's Catholic Church, Walkersville, where she was formerly active with the Sodality and church activities prior to her moving to Buckingham's Choice.
She is survived by four children, Helen Seymour and husband, Robert, of Derwood, Susan Swiss and husband, Joe, of Frederick, John Sanders and wife, Rosario, of Herndon, Va., and Patricia Pepper and husband, Michael, of Middletown; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E. Second St., Frederick, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. with Father Richard J. Murphy as celebrant.
Interment services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, at Fort Indiantown Gap National Veterans cemetery, Annville, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the memorial fund of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 112 E. Second St., Frederick, MD 21701.
