Mrs. Kathy Lou (Keilholtz) Williamson

Mrs. Kathy Lou (Keilholtz) Williamson, 49, passed gently, in the early morning Saturday, March 21, 2009. Kathy spent her last days at the home on the hill she so dearly loved, in Ijamsville. She was surrounded by the family she helped form: her husband, Ron, that she adored and he her; the sons and their families, Lincoln Williamson (Marianne spouse, Kirstie granddaughter) of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Erik Williamson (Lori spouse, Abbigail granddaughter) of Meyersville; her father, Kenneth Keilholtz of Walkersville; her brothers, Kenneth Keilholtz Jr. of Kinwood, Texas, and Keith Keilholtz of New River, Ariz.; her sister, Kay Schaller and family (Steve, spouse, Josh and Nick, nephews, Anna niece) of Emittsburg; and close family friends, Wilma Fogle of Thurmont and Amy Thomphson of Walkersville.

Present in love and spirit, but separated by thousands of miles are her brother-in-law, Wayne Williamson of Seward, Neb., and longtime family friend, Debbie Gibbons of Germantown (while in France).

Kathy was born June 10, 1959, in Gettysburg, Pa. She graduated from Walkersville High School, Class of 1977. She promptly went to work in the clerical field, first in pediatrics, then insurance. Kathy joined the National Geographic Society as a secretary in the Cartographic Division on Sept. 21, 1981. In August 1990, she became an administrative assistant in the National Geographic Magazine Writers and Text Editors Division, where she worked for staff archaeologist Dr. George Stuart. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Ron Williamson, and was later married Sept. 25, 1993. She was promoted several times, leading to her most recent post as director of operations, Research, Conservation and Exploration Group, in February 2004. In this capacity, Kathy and her staff worked directly with scientist-specialists the world over in areas as varied as archaeology and conservation biology and everything in between that had connection with the Society's grand commitment to geography. Kathy's role also required planning and facilitating several annual trips for the Research Committee, including international sites such as, Belize, Cuba, Peru, Madagascar, China, Egypt and her last, Vietnam.

National Geographic Research, Conservation and Exploration Group vice president, John Francis, said "Kathy was a gift to us all. Her professionalism and competence over many years carried the beauty of National Geographic forward. She lit up rooms, but deflected to others credit she was profoundly due."

"Kathy has always been known, among other things, for her absolute grace under pressure, her compassion toward her colleagues, her intelligence and keen ability to tackle and master the job before her, her warm and witty sense of humor, and last but not least, her natural elegance," National Geographic Expeditions council director, Rebecca Martin, said. "And anyone who knew Kathy was quite aware how much she loved her husband, Ron, as well as her entire family."

While travel was always a part of her life, being at home with Ron and Jake (her Westie) were her first loves. Preparing the flower pots and beds of spring, getting dirt under her nails, setting the plants and watching the explosion of color, shapes and smells delighted her. For this reason, the family has chosen not to have a memorial service to commemorate her death, but to have a celebration of her life through a "legacy garden." The family will host a weekend in June (6 to 7), for invited guests to come to her home on the hill to participate in setting plants in beds and pots in her memory. Each will be able to leave a piece of themselves in her garden.

Kathy fought her battle with cancer and all its side effects bravely for nearly four years, always with a cheerful smile or gesture in spite of her pain. She continually helped other cancer patients by her always positive outlook and actions.

Charitable contributions may be made in aid of cervical cancer research at cervicalcancercampaign.org.
