March 10, 2000

Rosina M. DeManss of Stevensville, MD. Died Saturday March 10, 2000 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. She was 76.

Born in East Stroudsburg, PA on June 1, 1924 to the late Charles Carr & Rosina S. Patterson. She graduated from East Strousburg High School in 1941, from East Strousburg State Teachers College in 1946 and John Hopkins University, where she revieved her masters in education. She married Charles John DeManss on December 24, 1949. Mrs. DeManss was a teacher at Catonsville Jr. High for 19 years. She was a long term resident of Catonsville and a member of St. Mark’s Parish in Catonsville, MD. She later retired to Kent Island and was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD.

Mrs. DeManss is survived by two sons, Michael DeManss of Compton, MD, Stephen DeManss of Ellicott City, MD, two daughters, Marcia Stewart of Huntington, PA, Karen Feagley of Huntington, PA. & 8 Grandchildren Her brother, Charles Patterson, Jr. predeceased & her husband Mr. DeManss predeceased her on April 25, 2000.

A funeral liturgy for Rosina “Pat” DeManss will be celebrated on Tuesday March 13, 2000 10AM at St Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. Family & friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. on Monday March 12, 2000 from 7PM to 9PM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to St. Christopher’s Catholic Church c/o Building Fund 1861 Harbor Drive Chester, MD. 21619; Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department P.O. 27 Stevensville, MD.; American Cancer Society of Queen Anne’s County P.O. 132 Queenstown, MD. 211658.

Ruth E.R. Helfrich, of Easton, Md, died on Saturday, March 10, 2001 at William Hill Manor. She was 92.

Born June 6, 1908, in Talbot County, she was the daughter of the late William and Annie Covey Helfrich. She attended public school in Talbot County and graduated from Trappe High School in 1926. She was the last surviving member of the class.

She had worked on the family farm in Windy Hill and at the death of her parents assumed ownership and continued the day to day operation. A life long member of Trappe United Methodist Church, she was also a member of Martha Circle and greatly encouraged and supported many church projects. Miss Helfrich has no immediate survivors. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2001 at 2 PM at Trappe United Methodist Church where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Private burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton.

Ashley Joseph Stairs III of Millington, Maryland died on March 10, 2001 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was 18.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 21, 1982, he was the son of the late Ashley Joseph Stairs Jr. and Betty Ann Austin of Millington, Md. also stepson of Craig W. Austin of Millington. Ashley attended Queen Anne's County High School where he was involved in football and lacrosse. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, and music concerts. He had a special love of music, which he shared with his mother. Ashley also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his stepbrother Craig.

In addition to his mother and stepfather, he is survived by a sister: Lesley Gayle Stairs of Millington, Md. a stepsister: Sondra K. Austin and a stepbrother: Craig T. Austin both of Media, Pa. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother: Katherine G. Watkins of Centreville, Md., his paternal grandfather: Ashley Joseph Stairs, Sr. of Baltimore, Md. and paternal grandmother: Jeanette Emerson of Winterhaven, Florida. Along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, he is survived by his girlfriend Stacy Cox.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday March 14, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home 370 West Cypress St. Millington, Md. where relatives and friends may call on Tuesday March 13, 2001 between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 PM. Interment will be in Church Hill cemetery.

Ruth Myers Cullis of Chestertown, MD died on Thursday, March 8, 2001 at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehab. Center. She was 96 years old.

Mrs. Cullis was born on June 17, 1904 the daughter of the late Carl and Maggie Younger Myers on Doe Neck Farm in Hainesville, MD. She graduated from Chestertown High School in 1921. Then she graduated from the Maryland State Normal School in 1923. Mrs. Cullis was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church, Women's Society of Christian Services and a member of the Rural Woman's Homemakers Club. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, family and friends and caning. She was preceded in death by her husband Samuel Cullis in 1994.

Mrs. Cullis is survived by 1 daughter, Frances Ruth Pennell of Worton, MD, 3 sons; Samuel Leon Cullis of Chestertown, MD, Thomas Carlton Cullis of Severna Park, MD and Herbert Myers Cullis of Gaithersburg, MD, 2 sisters; Naomi M. Wheat and Anna M. Welch, 1 brother; Paul Myers, 1 brother-in-law, one sister in law, Elizabeth Myers all of Kent County, MD 1 brother in law, Clarence Leveredge of Elkton, MD, 8 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at St. James United Methodist Church, Worton, MD on Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends may call on Monday, March 12, 2001 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, MD from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Interment will be at St. James cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. James United Methodist Church, PO Box 156, Worton, MD 21678.

Evelyn M. Davis of Easton died on Thursday, March 8, 2001 at her home. She was 93.

Born September 12, 1907 in Dorchester County, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Cora Short Marshall. After attending public school in Caroline County, she married Wendell Lee Davis, February 3, 1926. She then worked as a seamstress in an Easton sewing factory, following which she assisted her husband in his appliance business in Easton until it's closing in the late 1960's. Mr. Davis died March 22, 1988.She attended First Wesleyan Church in Easton and enjoyed sewing, crocheting and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Davis is survived by four children; Virginia L. Davis of Easton, MD, Iris M. Pyle of Severn, MD, Donald L. Davis of Easton, MD and Wendell E. Davis of Denton, MD; two sisters, Marguerite L. Thomas of Centreville, MD and Clara F. Ryder of Easton, MD; eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Monday, March 12, 2001 at 11 AM, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Dr., Easton, MD 21601.

Harry Dodd Embert of Church Hill died on Thursday, March 8, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, MD. He was 80.

He was born February 4, 1921 in Chestertown, MD, son of the late William Edward and Elizabeth Hall Embert, and following the deaths of his parents at an early age, he was raised by his grandparents, the late Charles E. and M. Elizabeth Whiteley Embert . He attended school in Kent County and he served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he received a Purple Heart. He served his country in Rome, Southern France, Central Europe and the Rhineland.

After his release from active duty, he returned to the area and married Susie Elizabeth Creighton and he began his career with the Cox Distributing Company where he was manager of the oil distribution until his retirement in 1982. In 1981 he married Margaret Jones and together they enjoyed traveling. He also enjoyed playing golf and playing cards with his Monday Night Card Club. He was also a member of the Centreville United Methodist Church, the Prospect Bay Country Club, the Millington VFW #568, the Jeff Davis Post American Legion and the Harrington Moose Lodge.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Embert is survived by a daughter, Susanne E. Mason of Queen Anne, MD, a son, William Norris Embert of Centreville, MD; a step-son, Rick C. Jones of Church Hill, MD and two step-daughters, Melissa Conner of Church Hill, MD and Wanda Cole of Middletown, MD; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 12, 2001 at 2:00 PM at the Centreville United Methodist Church, Centreville, MD. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, MD on Sunday, March 11, 2001 from 4 ­ 6 PM. Burial will be in Chesterfield cemetery, Centreville, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to the Centreville United Methodist Church, 608 Church Hill Road, Centreville, MD 21617.

Dorothy Elizabeth Smith Mahaney of Chestertown, Md. died on March 8, 2001 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home. She was 82.

Born in Pitt County, North Carolina on January 4, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Ray Von and Lottie Bell Adams Smith. She was a graduate of Grifton High School class of 1938.

She married Francis Mahaney on June 15, 1946. They made their home in Washington D.C. where she raised her family. They later resided in Cheverly, Maryland until Mr. Mahaney's retirement in 1978 when they moved to Grifton, NC. The Mahaney's moved to Chestertown in 1998. Mrs. Mahaney enjoyed sewing and crocheting.

In addition to her husband she is survived by 2 daughters: Joan Borradaile of Arnold, Md. and Anne Raum of Knoxville, Md.; a brother: Billy Rae Smith of Raleigh, NC. and a sister-in-law: Mary Smith of Kinston, NC. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday March 12, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 408 S. Liberty Street Centreville, Md. 21617. Relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home in Centreville.

Interment will be in Chesterfield cemetery Centreville, MD.

Ray Henry Stevenson, Jr. of Worton, Md. died on March 8, 2001 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. He was 72.

Born in Washington D.C. he was the son of the late: Ray Henry and Aileen Hardy Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson is the husband of Evelyn Anne Mohler Stevenson whom he married on April 17, 1949. Ray served as a Corporal in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1948. He graduated from Strayer Business College in Washington D.C. before working in the retail automotive industry.

Ray became the Executive Vice President of Capital Car Distributors, Inc., importing Volkswagens to the mid-Atlantic region in the early 1960's. He later became the Executive Vice President of Mid-Atlantic Toyota Distributors and was President of Classic Motor Cars in Annapolis, Md. Ray was a member of Congressional Country Club, the Annapolis Yacht Club, and former president of Chester River Yacht and Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf, gardening, fishing, and boating. Mr. Stevenson was an avid Redskins Fan.

In addition to his wife of 51 years, he is survived by a son: James Hardy Stevenson of Washington D.C. and two granddaughters: Kimberly Anne and Shannon Marie Stevenson of Washington, D.C.

Memorial services will be held on Friday March 16, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, MD. Interment will be held privately at Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville, Md.
