Mrs. Anna D. Smith

Anna D. Smith, 80, of Frederick, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Ralph L. Smith, who died July 25, 1995.

Born Nov. 19, 1928, in Greenfield, she was the daughter of the late Samuel E. and Rebecca V. Welty Davis.

Mrs. Smith was a long-time resident of Frederick, a lifelong and active member of the Forest Grove United Methodist Church of Dickerson and an active volunteer for the Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center Auxiliary.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Deborah N. Powers, with whom she shared a home; her brother, William E. Davis and wife, Ruth; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was additionally survived by her feline companion "Sophie."

Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 26, at Resthaven Memorial Garden cemetery, Frederick. Rev. Allan Angleman, her Pastor of Forest Grove UMC, will officiate. Interment to follow at the cemetery. Those wishing to attend services are asked to meet at the cemetery entrance by 10:45 a.m.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mr. Frank Strunk

Mr. Frank R. Strunk Sr., 82, of Mount Airy, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Helen M. Strunk, who died in 1999.

Born Dec. 10, 1926, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Maxwell and Lillian Strunk. Mr. Strunk was an engineer specializing in designing metal boxes and other items for various industries. He enjoyed life to its fullest and most importantly, loved his family and his Lord.

Surviving are four children, Rick Strunk and wife, Kathryn, of Wingate, N.C., Steven Strunk and wife, Jacki, of Monrovia, Sharon King and husband, John, of Brunswick and Debra King and husband, Jim, of Mount Airy; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Samuel Strunk and wife, Claire, of Ocala, Fla.; and a daughter-in-law, Rene? Strunk of Woodbridge, Va. He was preceded in death by a son, Frank R. Strunk Jr.; a brother, Maxwell Strunk Jr.; and two sisters, Margie Morris and Isabel Winfrey.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy; where a time of remembrance will begin at 7 p.m.

Graveside services and interment will take place in Volusia Memorial Park, Ormond Beach, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Airy Vol. Fire Co., 702 N. Main St., Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Mr. Roy Wilson

Mr. Roy Alvin "Pete" Wilson, 66, of Rocky Ridge, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Feb. 11, 1943, in Union Bridge, he was the son of the late Raymond C. and Ruth L. Eckard Wilson. He was the husband of Rachel Misner Wilson, his wife of 45 years.

Mr. Wilson worked for many years with Dick Mort, hanging drywall and then he was employed in road construction with R.F. Kline and Sons of Frederick. The last 12 years he had been a dairy farmer. He enjoyed hunting and spending time with friends and his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Kenneth E. Wilson and fianc?e, Patti Stevens, of Frederick; a daughter, Tammy S. Capece and husband, Brad, of Union Bridge; two granddaughters, Casey and Carmella Capece; two sisters, Reba Spielman and husband, Bill, of Taneytown; Reta Weddle and husband, Jimmy, of Keymar; a brother, Russell Wilson and wife, Barbara, of Gettysburg, Pa. and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Ruby Wilson and two brothers, Ralph and Roger Wilson.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, with Rev. James Hosey, pastor of Evangelical Wesleyan Church of Keymar, officiating. Interment will be in Union cemetery, Keysville.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 23, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to help defray expenses.

Mrs. Cinderella Butler

Mrs. Cinderella "Cindy" T. Butler, 96, of Poolesville, died peacefully at home Saturday, March 21, 2009.

She was the wife of the late George Butler, who passed in 1979.

Born Feb. 7, 1913, in Whites Ferry, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Annie Frye Titus.

She was a devoted wife for 43 years, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother who believed in God and led by example. She had a quiet strength which was felt by all who knew and loved her and it was that strength and love and her trust in God's mercy that carried her home.

Surviving are her children, Anne B. Hopkins, Mary N. Lambert (Jim), Harriet B. Magaha (Ron), Carol B. Lawson (Bob), George Butler Jr. (Debbie), Frances B. Hoewing (Link); 19 grandchildren, Happy Hopkins (Penny), Chris Stowers (Chuck), Terri Winn (Larry), Matt Hopkins (Tonya), Maggie Leibrand (Roy), Cathy Bupp (Mike), Larry Neal, Andy Neal (Amy), Rinnie Magaha (Robin), Robin LeMarr (Donnie), Holly Henderson (Ryan), Jessica Bodmer (Jason), Michael Lawson, Leigh Ann, Rob and Tim Butler, Sara Hoewing, Emily Hoewing (fianc?, Conor Devine), Justine Hoewing; 31 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Cindy was the last surviving of 12 children.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (MD-109), Barnesville (hiltonfh.com); where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, Barnesville.

Interment will follow in Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cindy's name to St. Mary's Catholic Church, P.O. Box 67, Barnesville, MD 20838.

Mr. Donald Thompson

Donald Charles Thompson, 53, of Sykesville, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Carroll Hospice Dove House, Westminster.

He was born Oct. 26, 1955, in Texas. He was the son of Harry W. and Christine J. Reinhardt of Mount Airy.

Donald worked as a purchasing agent for Standard Supply. He was an avid fisherman.

Surviving in addition to his parents are sisters, Sharon Harrison of Mount Airy, Becky Shields of Westminster, Rachel Brunk of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Sara Hall of New Market, Mary Porter of Mount Airy, Meagan Reinhardt of Mount Airy; and brothers, Edwin L. Reinhardt II and Harry Reinhardt Jr., both of Mount Airy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at Martini Lutheran Church, 100 W. Henrietta St., Baltimore; Pastor Elliott Robertson will officiate. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, in All Saints Monie cemetery, Princess Anne.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

Those desiring may make memorial donations to Carroll Hospice, Dove House, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157.

Mr. Joseph Spriggs

Joseph L. Spriggs, 77, of Fredericksburg, Va., died March 23, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 28, 1932, in Burkittsville, he was the son of the late Catherine L. Dorsey, and stepson of the late Roy C. Dorsey. He was predeceased by his wife, Lucy Duvall Spriggs, in 1994.

He was a graduate of Lincoln High School. After graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for 23 years. After retirement from the Air Force, he moved to Alaska and worked on the pipeline for several years. He and his wife returned to Washington and he was employed by Children's Hospital as an electrician. Once retired from Children's Hospital, he settled in Fredericksburg, Va.

He is survived by two devoted sisters, Catherine E. Jackson, Knoxville, and Betty B. Dorsey, Burkittsville; stepdaughter, Cynthia Harding; two step-grandsons, Tyronne and Lavail; three sisters-in-law, Malcinia Diggs and husband, Mary Toombs and husband, and Flora Haynes; two brothers-in-law, William Duvall and Hugh Duvall and wife. He is also survived by a foster sister, Mary E. Brown; special friend, India Harrison; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Alfred; and a sister, Dorothy.

The family will receive friends prior to the 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, service at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 N. Maple Ave., Brunswick. Interment will be at Arlington National cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Frederick Memorial Hospital, Intensive Care Unit.

Mr. Wade Martin Zirkle

Mr. Wade Martin Zirkle, 70, of Jefferson, died at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center in Frederick on Wednesday, March 25, 2009.

Born June 17, 1938, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Rev. Martin Luther Zirkle and Grace Lockwood Weaver Zirkle. He grew up in St. Paul's Lutheran Church where his father was pastor from December 1948 to July 1960. He is survived by his loving wife, Georgia Ann Eagle Zirkle.

Mr. Zirkle was a graduate of Middletown High School, Class of 1957, Frederick Community College, Columbia Technical Institute D.C., Towson University and University of Maryland. He was retired from Universal Computers of Houston, and also taught in Frederick County Public Schools.

Mr. Zirkle was a member of the Frederick Elks Lodge 684. He was interested in keeping family connections and serving the community. He was a former Boy Scout member, having made the trip to Philmont, New Mexico, in 1956. He was also a member of the Brunswick Eagles and Moose Lodge, the Petersville Ruritan Club, Petersville Farmers Club, Jefferson Volunteer Fire Co., League of Women Voters, the South Mountain Heritage Society and many other various organizations. He attended Petersville Luther Chapel where he was the president of the council. He helped design the chapel at Mar-Lu-Ridge along with Phil Brohawn, the camp's original director.

Friends were received Friday, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 5 E. Main St., Burkittsville. Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday the Elks had a memorial service. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, in Burkittsville. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Pallbearers will be Denny Shafer, Kenny Bowers, Richard Grimes, Noel Werking, Pete Riley, John Shafer Jr. and John Wenner. Honorary pallbearers will be David Pry, Donald Guyton, Albert Zirkle, Manuel Baker and Richard Zecher.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mar-Lu-Ridge Camp, 3200 Mar-Lu-Ridge Road, Jefferson, MD 21755, attn: Director.

Arrangements are by Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Mr. Aubrey Snoots

Mr. Aubrey Jackson Snoots, 92, of Thurmont, died Friday, March 27, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Dorothy L. Young Snoots, his wife of 71 years.

Born March 16, 1917, in Leesburg, Va., he was the son of the late Harry and Alice Davis Snoots. He was a retired millwright at Ft. Detrick. Aubrey served at a Sgt. In the U.S. Army during World War II as a member of the "Bushmasters" Arizona 158th Infantry seeing action in New Guinea and the Philippines. Mr. Snoots was a member of the Edwin Creager American Legion Post No. 68, and AMVETS Post No. 7 both in Thurmont, VFW Post No. 6658 in Emmitsburg and was a life member of the Frederick Moose Club. He loved to hunt and fish, enjoyed all sports and was involved with the Lewistown Little League for several years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Kenneth A. Snoots and wife, Virginia, of Rockville and James R. Snoots and wife, Joanne, of Frederick; six grandchildren, Kenneth A. Snoots Jr., Michael Snoots, Kevin Snoots, Karen Burgee, Amy Feaster and Max Timberlake; eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Snoots was preceded in death by a three brothers, Victor Snoots, Foster Snoots, Albert Snoots; four sisters, Minnie Snoots, Annie Snoots, Evelyn Favorite, Elizabeth Gladhill; a daughter, Kathleen Timberlake; and a grandson, Darren Blair.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 30, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont; where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, with Rev. Jeff Gehris of Graceham Moravian Church officiating.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor, to the American Heart Association, P.O. 5216 Glen Allen, VA 23058.

Mrs. Loretta King

Mrs. Loretta King passed away on March 29, 2009, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

She is survived by her loving husband, Roger King; and two sons, Paul Coleman Pierce and James Gregory Pierce; as well as her grandchildren, McKenna Martene Pierce and Taylor Joy Pierce; and great-granddaughter, Teagan Pierce.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N in Frederick.

Floral tributes are welcome.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Mrs. Grace Wachter

Mrs. Grace Evelyn Lee Stevens Wachter, of Frederick, died March 28, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born in Mount Airy, on April 11, 1934, she was the daughter of Chester George Lee Stevens and Florence Catherine Young Stevens.

Mrs. Wachter was a member of the Moose and enjoyed playing bingo. She lived for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wachter loved her cats and had a special place in her heart for all animals.

She was the beloved wife of Donald Wachter and the loving mother to son, Timothy Lee Wachter and his wife, Nancy, of Inwood, W.Va., and daughter, Teresa Kay Hoopengardner of Frederick. Mrs. Wachter is also survived by five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brothers, Chester R. Stevens and his wife, Helen, of Frederick; Warren E. Stevens and his wife, Judy, of Frederick, and Donald L. Stevens of Brunswick. Grace is also survived by her Uncle Warren Young of Frederick; Aunt Eva Stride; Aunt Betty Young; Cousin Jean Boone; and brother-in-law, Osborne Wachter and wife, Betty, of Middletown. Mrs. Wachter was preceded in death by nephews, Christopher Stevens and Randy Stevens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. Virgie Whorley

Virgie Lee Whorley, 89, a resident of Morgan County War Memorial Hospital Extended Care, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and formerly of Lovettsville, Va., died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at the Extended Care, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born May 25, 1919, in Floyd County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Ola Hubbard Belcher and the widow of Jesse Whorley, who died June 10, 1966.

She was a homemaker and attended Jack's Creek United Methodist Church in Stuart, Va.

She is survived by two daughters, LaVahn Godsey of Columbus, Ohio, Linda Barker of Boonsboro; one sister, Lorna Belcher of Woolwine, Va.; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Lonnis Whorley; one grandson, Jessie Godsey; and one great-great-grand-infant.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Lovettsville, Va.; Rev. Roland England will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Grove Funeral Home, Hancock.

The family requests memorial contributions may be made to Grove Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 368, Hancock, MD 21750-0368 to help defray funeral expenses.
