Mr. Donald Jewell

Mr. Donald A. Jewell, 76, of Jefferson, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Frances Jewell, his wife of 33 years.

Born May 19, 1932, in Loudon County, Va., he was the son of the late Raymond and Ruth Jewell. After high school, Mr. Jewell served in the U.S. Army. He drove tractor trailers for many years, retiring in 1999.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jennifer James and Janice Nutter and husband, Steve; a son, Scott Jewell and wife, Tracey; a stepson, Randy Stockman and wife, Kathi; a stepdaughter, Rhonda Trail and husband, Melvin; three sisters, Macy Santmyer and husband, Paul, Thelma Johnson and husband, Clarence, Marguerite Santmyer and husband, James; a brother, Raymond Jewell and wife, Gail; six grandchildren, Michael and Matthew James, and Daniel, Adam, and Ashley Nutter, and Victoria Jewell; three step-grandchildren, Natalie and Byron Stockman, and Meghan Trail; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N., Frederick; where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 2. Rev. Guy Wenck will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jefferson United Church of Christ, 3837 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, MD 21755.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Mrs. Kay Hinds

Mrs. Kay Earline Hinds, 58, of Frederick, peacefully entered into eternal life Friday, March 27, 2009, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Kay Lyles was born July 9, 1950, to the late Vauda Barton and Floyd Lyles. She was the wife of Colin Hinds. She graduated from Lincoln High and also attended Forrest Park High in Baltimore.

Kay was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Renale Smith and Vauda Cash Carrington, both of Frederick; four grandchildren, Iliyah and Yasin Khabir, Kemari Shaw, and Joseph Carrington; stepfather, Williams A. Barton; stepbrother, Billy Barton; and devoted friends, James Braxton, Toni Duckett, Netti Rollins, Servaria Hendrix and Samuel McKinney.

Family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at Asbury UMC, 98 W. All Saints St. A memorial service will follow with Pastor Lavelle Brooks officiating.

Arrangements are by Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home, Frederick.

Mrs. Bessie Tyler-Zeigler

Mrs. Bessie Louise Tyler-Zeigler, 72, of Baltimore, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2009. She was the wife of the late Ulysses Grant Zeigler Sr.

Born Oct. 7, 1936, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late George and Olia Tyler.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved the Lord and was loved by all.

She is survived by four sons, David (Trell) Ambush of Sykesville, Ronny and Johnny Ambush and Wayne Zeigler of Baltimore; four daughters, Cheryl, Dorothy, Theresa, and Melissa Zeigler, all of Baltimore; 29 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Thurman (Minnie) Tyler of Mount Airy, Marshall (Patricia) Tyler of Randallstown, and Melvin (Joannie) Spriggs of Gaithersburg; two sisters, Lucille Dorsey of Mount Airy and Joan Wallace of Gaithersburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased in death by one son, Ulysses Zeigler Jr.; one daughter, Joanne Dorsey; one granddaughter, Shiquita Roary; one sister, Elise Myers and three brothers, George, Leon and Roger Tyler.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at William C. Brown Funeral Home, 1206 W. North Ave., Baltimore.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at St. Abraham Baptist Church, 1124 W. North Ave., Baltimore.

Arrangements are by William C. Brown Community Funeral Homes, P.A., Baltimore; 410-728-8422.

Mrs. Irene Boyett Smith

Mrs. Irene Boyett Smith, of Gaithersburg, died Friday, March 13, 2009.

She was the beloved wife of the late Paul L. Smith; dear sister of Doris B. Sears, Louise B. Davidson and William E. Boyett. Many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends also survive her.

Friends may call at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Funeral service will be held at Redland Baptist Church, 6922 Muncaster Mill Road, Rockville, MD 20855 at 11. a.m. on Thursday, March 19. Interment Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the above church.

Mrs. Betty Lawson

Mrs. Betty Katherine Herwig Lawson, 86, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2009, at her residence in Urbana. She was the loving wife of Marion Uriah Lawson, "Dick," her husband of 66 years, who passed away March 11, 2007.

She was born in Frederick, Nov. 9, 1922, and she was a daughter of the late Clarence Albert and Fannie Amelia Boyer Herwig. She was the last of her immediate family and she was a graduate of Frederick High School, Class of 1940.

Surviving are her two daughters, Sandra L. Lawson at home in Urbana and Joanna Lawson Stone and her husband, Clyde, also of Urbana; three grandsons, Clyde Stone Jr., and wife, Robin, of Urbana, Bryan Stone and wife, Susan, of Union Bridge and Eric Stone and wife, Kathy, of Monrovia; four great-granddaughters, Amanda, Allison, Alexa and Cassidy Stone.

Funeral services and interment will be private. Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

The omission of flowers is requested and memorial contributions may be made to Arthritis Foundation, Maryland Chapter, 9505 Reisterstown Road, Suite 1 North, Owings Mills, MD 21117.

Mrs. Isabelle D. McGee

Isabelle D. McGee, of Venice, Fla., died March 8, 2009. She was a resident of Venice for approximately 25 years and a faithful member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Venice, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William, who died in 1962. They were owner/operators of various restaurants in the Frederick/Hagerstown area.

Isabelle was born in January 1914 in Middletown. She was the daughter of Seymore and Annie Summers and the sister of nine brothers and sisters. They were Paul Eugene Summers (NC), Francis Summers (MD), Caroline Barkley (FL), Gernie Paden (MD), Edna Easton (OH), Virginia May (WV), Anna Mary Summers (MD), Edward Summers (MD) and John Summers (MD). She is survived by 11 nieces and nephews.

Interment will be at the Rose Hill cemetery, Hagerstown. A memorial service will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her honor to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Venice, Fla.

Mrs. Iris Fleming

Mrs. Iris V. Fleming, 83, a resident of Albuquerque, N.M, since 1986, went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 8, 2009.

She is survived by her children, Sharon Green of Buffalo, N.Y., John Fleming of Las Cruces, N.M., Mary Willcox of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Joseph Fleming and wife, Phyllis, of Las Cruces, N.M., Anne Myers of Middletown, Patricia Thomas and husband, David, of Roswell, N.M. and Catherine Fleming of Albuquerque, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Fleming.

Mrs. Fleming was a member of the Catholic Ladies' Guild, Advisory Board, Pioneer Savings and Loan, Roswell, N.M., precinct chairman in Roswell, N.M., Roswell Symphony Guild, New Mexico Federation of Women's Clubs and Friendship Force of New Mexico.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday, March 13, at French Mortuary, Lomas Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, March 14, at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church (Lomas at Tennessee). Cremation will follow. Interment of cremated remains will be at Gate of Heaven cemetery.

Mrs. Barbara Dodson

Mrs. Barbara Becker Dodson, 60, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at her home in Mount Airy.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert; two sons, Robert and Michael; daughter, Teresa; three grandsons, Nathaniel, Michael and Zachary; three sisters; three brothers; and many loving family members and friends.

Friends may call from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at St. Peter's Parish, 2900 Sandy Spring Road, Olney.

Interment will be in Gate of Heaven cemetery.

Mrs. Betty Renner

Mrs. Betty D. Renner, 63, of Gettysburg, Pa., passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009, in New Oxford, Pa., after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of James D. Renner, of Gettysburg, her husband of 30 years.

Born Oct. 21, 1945, in Adams County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Raymond J. and Stella Arnesberger.

Betty graduated from Biglersville High School, Class of 1964. She loved country music, playing cards with family and friends and bingo. She and James traveled extensively, including trips to Alaska, the Bahamas and Niagra Falls. They visited 32 states in all.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Bobbi Jo Miller of Chambersburg, Pa., and Dawn Ren? Mullican of Thurmont; five stepchildren, Deborah F. Williams of Hagerstown, Robert D. Renner of Frederick, Randy J. Renner of Walkersville, Betty J. King of Frederick, and Daniel E. Renner of Tallahassee, Fla.; three sisters, Erma Weikert, Susan Bowmaster and Brenda Bobo, all of Biglerville, Pa.; five grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren, 17 stepgreat-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Ralph Arnesberger; a stepdaughter, Linda Sue Summers; and a step grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. 15 N. in Frederick, where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, March 23. Pastor Alan Angleman will officiate.

Mr. Robert Owens Jr.

Mr. Robert Lee Owens Jr., of Rockville, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009. He was the beloved husband of the late Aleze F. Owens; father of Randall L. Owens (Judy), and Paula J. Daugherty (Jim); grandfather of P. Allen Summers (Ann), Shaun R. Owens (Tara), Russell M. Owens (Dawn), and Ashley Daugherty; great-grandfather of Nicholas, Michael, Kade and Lexis; and brother of Ruby Thompson, Dorothy Smith, Neil Owens, Mary Dashnaw, Albert Owens and Bettie Phelps.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave. (Md. 28, exit 6-A just off I-270), Rockville, where service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 21. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Lenora Steiding

Mrs. Lenora Irene Steiding, 79, of Venice, Fla., died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Hospice House in Sarasota. She was the loving wife of Perry K. Steiding, her husband of 61 years.

Born Nov. 4, 1929, in Saborton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Nora Friend.

Lenora was a homemaker and devout Christian. She spent most of her life in the Frederick, Md., area until she retired to Florida. She will be remembered for her warm smile and loving heart.

In addition to her husband, Perry, she is survived by three sons, Marvin Steiding and wife, Candace, of Nokomis, Fla.; Kenneth Steiding and wife, Gail, of Laytonsville, Md., and Wayne Steiding and wife, Krista, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Teresa, Shane, Eric, Adrian, Scott, Mark, Troy and Chris; two great-granddaughters; and nine brothers and sisters.

A service in celebration of her life--will--be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Maranatha Community Church, 123 Byte Drive, Frederick, with a graveside service--immediately following at Mount--Olivet cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to Maranatha Community Church or Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

Mrs. Iona Franklin Hill

Mrs. Iona Franklin Hill, born Jan. 9, 1922, in Frederick, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, March 17, 2009. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Reuben Lawyer Nickens, and Mary Frances Brooks Nickens, and the wife of the late James William Hill Sr.

Mrs. Hill was educated in the Frederick County school system, was a member of the state and local AARP, the Lupus Foundation and the Frederick County Scholarship Aid Fund. She was an active member of First Missionary Baptist Church, where she labored faithfully serving on the kitchen committee, senior usher ministry, senior choir and was a deaconess on the Deaconess Ministry.

Mrs. Hill had a passion for sewing, cooking, entertaining and becoming a mother to a deceased nephew, James Childs, and later to Chris Bowins, and helping in the community.

She leaves to mourn two children, James W. Hill Jr., and wife, Margaret, of Clarksville, Tenn., and Patricia A. Gaither and husband, John, of Frederick; daughter-in-law, Willie H. Hill; brother, Lord D. Nickens and wife, Thelma; four grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She also leaves many friends, Gail Hill, and Ina Passmore.

Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Hill; and son, Steven Hill; six brothers; and five sisters.

A public viewing will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Gary Rollins Funeral Home, 110 W. South St., Frederick, and from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church, 899 Swallowtail Drive, Frederick.

The homegoing service will be held at noon, Tuesday, March 24, at First Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. William H. Graham officiating. Arrangements are by Gary Rollins Funeral Services.
