Mrs. Pleasant Jane Shoemaker

Mrs. Pleasant Jane Shoemaker, 76, of Jefferson, died suddenly at her residence Wednesday, March 18, 2009.

She was the wife of the late Lewis R. Shoemaker Sr.

Born March 17, 1933, in Bethesda, she was the daughter of the late Thomas C. and Laura Shreve Bladen.

Surviving are her children, Thomas O. Shoemaker Sr., Alan L. Shoemaker Sr., and fianc?, Donna Remines, James L. Shoemaker and wife, Janet; two brothers, Ronald Bladen and Curtis Bladen; one sister, Harriette Healand; grandchildren, Donald, Chad, Jason, Thomas Jr., Alan Jr., Edward, Michael, Matthew, Sean, Hunter, Mandi, Christina S., Christina D., Amber, and April; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Leann, Carlee, Kylie, Chellsie, Joshua, Laurren, Faith, Breeanna, Nathan, Kayla, Megan and Alan III.

She was preceded in death by one son, Lewis Shoemaker Jr.; three brothers, William, Thomas and Don Bladen; one sister, Margie Grebler; and one granddaughter, Peggy Sue Shoemaker.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 23, at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Md. 109), Barnesville, (hiltonfh.com) where the family will receive friends one hour prior.

Interment will be in Mt. Carmel cemetery, Sunshine.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to Lewis' grandson, Joshua A. Johnson Jr., c/o Bulldog Federal Credit Union.

Mr. Ralph Rohrer

Ralph Coolidge Rohrer, 84, of Frederick, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Homewood at Crumland Farms. Born Oct. 20, 1924, in Harmony, he was the youngest child of the late Harry Davis and Sarah Elizabeth Lutz Rohrer.

A 1941 graduate of Middletown High School, after graduation Ralph was employed by McCain's Orchards until his entry into the Army in 1945. Serving in Korea with Company D, 32nd Infantry Regiment, Ralph was honorably discharged in November 1946.

Ralph met the love of his life, Miriam "Mickey" Virginia Whipp Rohrer, while both were employed at McCain's Orchards. Married Oct. 26, 1947, they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary together in 2004. Mickey predeceased Ralph, Nov. 1, 2004.

On Jan. 17, 1948, Ralph began a lifetime career with the Frederick Motor Company. Starting in the parts department as a clerk, Ralph held various management positions with the company. After 48 years of service, he retired in June 1996 as vice president and general manager.

In addition to his love for Ford cars, Ralph enjoyed the outdoors. In the spring, he and Mickey enjoyed hunting for wild mushrooms in the hills of Harmony and Wolfsville. Ralph also liked to hunt and fish, especially with his two neighbors, the late Nelson T. Main Sr. and John C. Wright. An avid vegetable gardener, Ralph greatly enjoyed spending time raising a wide variety of produce, engaging in friendly gardening competition with his neighbors and sharing the fruits of his labor with others. Ralph's neighbors provided him with much love, support and friendship over the years.

Ralph was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown for almost 70 years, having joined Zion in May 1939. During his membership, he served several terms on the Church Council. Ralph was also a supporter of his childhood church, The Harmony Lutheran Church. Ralph was a member of VFW Post #3285 and the American Legion Post #11.

Ralph is survived by his three children, Kathy A. Rohrer and companion, George F. Garman, of Frederick; David A. Rohrer and wife, Stacy, and granddaughter, Sydney Virginia of Carlisle, Pa.; and R. Thomas Rohrer and wife, Vickie, of Salisbury. He is also survived by a step-grandson, Jonathan Schmidt and family; sisters, Mae L. Main, of Myersville and Nellie B. Draper, of Gapland; brothers-in-law, Donald L. Whipp of The Villages, Fla., and Austin T. Brandenburg of Myersville; and several nieces and nephews.

Ralph was predeceased by an infant sister, Gladys Virginia Rohrer; his brother, Ray Nelson Rohrer on March 24, 1937; and sisters, Mary C. Axline, Irene E. Rohrer and Grace E. Brandenburg.

The family would like to thank the staff of Meadows Court, Homewood, for the love and care that they gave so generously to their father while he was a resident.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Zion Lutheran cemetery, Middletown.

Pallbearers will be Ralph's sons, David A. Rohrer and R. Thomas Rohrer, George F. Garman and nephews, Conrad Rohrer, Ray Axline and Ronnie Brandenburg.

Mrs. Kathryn Speer

Kathryn Lorraine "Penny" Speer, 84, of Rockville, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009, with her family at her grandson's residence in Walkersville. She was the wife of 50 years to the late Rodger Speer, who passed way in 1995. Born Oct. 12, 1924, in Altoona, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Elroy Sites and Emalu Dangler Sites.

She was the mother of Donna J. Wilson, of Germantown and Jodi L. Colantuno and husband, Paul, of Boonsboro; grandmother of Christopher P. Tharp and wife, Kimberly, of Frederick, Daniel S. Schlosser and wife, Deborah, of Walkersville, and Lori J. O'Leary husband, Jason, of Hagerstown; great-grandmother of Jesse, Austin and Allyson Schlosser, Nicholas Tharp, and Sydney O'Leary. Mrs. Speer was also the sister of the late Elroy Sites. She will also be missed by her special friends Charlene, Peggy, Gladys, Dee and Bonnie. She will also be missed by her special dog, Matty.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick; where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 26. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery, Silver Spring.

Mr. D. Scott Gregory

Mr. D. Scott Gregory, 44, of Gaithersburg, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, March 22, 2009, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. He was the husband of Jasmine Romero Gregory.

Born Sept. 25, 1964, in Silver Spring, he was a son of Bruce Norman Gregory of Washington, D.C., and Diane June DeBoer Gregory of Silver Spring. He graduated in 1982 from Wheaton High School.

Mr. Gregory was currently employed for Rockville Interiors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman; and consequently was a NRA member. He enjoyed riding his Harley Motorcycle; and was an artist when it came to wood working.

He was always eager to help someone. This varied from helping friends with home repairs to devoting his time and effort walking annually to raise funds to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Surviving besides his wife and parents is his son, W. Scott Gregory of Gaithersburg; siblings, Donna Gregory of Silver Spring and Eric Gregory of Princeton, N.J.; as well as his mother-in-law, Maria Romero of Silver Spring.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, 9250 Damascus Road, Damascus. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven cemetery, Silver Spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Gregory's name to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Maryland Chapter, 11350 McCormick Road, Executive Plaza III, Suite 100, Hunt Valley, MD 21301.

Mr. Lester Selders

Lester Lawrence Selders, 73, of Reedville, Va., passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Rappahannock Medical Center in Kilmarnock, Va.

He was born Nov. 2, 1935, in Aurora, W.Va., as a son of the late Elmer (Pat) and Goldie May (Sims) Selders.

Lester retired after 38 years as vice president of manufacturing with North American Housing, Inc., in Point of Rocks.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960.

Lester is survived by his wife of 23 years, Patricia L. Selders; two sons, Charles L. Selders of Sterling, Va., and Kerry K. Bradley and wife, Nicole, of Ashburn, Va.; four sisters, Viola C. Walker, Vivian J. Janoske and husband, Ralph, of Oakland, Margaret C. Martin and husband, Dwight, of Bayard, W.Va., and JoAnn Lambert and husband, Gene, of Oakland; two brothers, Raymond H. Selders and wife, Barbara, of Oakland, and Harold N. Selders and wife, Katie, of Hamilton, Va.; and two grandsons, Alexander and Christopher Bradley, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Regina C. Stone.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, Boonsboro. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, in the funeral home chapel. Rev. R. Thomas Fralin Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow in the Boonsboro cemetery in Boonsboro.

Miss Margaret Payne

Margaret Amelia Payne, "Targ," of The Record Street Home, Frederick, died Saturday, March 21, 2009.

Born Dec. 3, 1907, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Margaret Hawker Payne.

Miss Payne was predeceased by the following brothers and sisters, Hubert, Russell, and John Payne; Minerva Morris, Adeline Kemp, and Josephine Bradley. She is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Miss Payne was a lifetime member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church.

She was employed as a nursing assistant at The Record Street Home from September of 1972 until she retired in August of 1988. Miss Payne moved into The Record Street Home in June of 1993, accompanying two of her sisters who also resided there.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 27, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 4004 Ballenger Creek Pike; interment in Manor Parish cemetery, Frederick.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff of The Record Street Home for their love and care of our dear Targ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Miss Payne's memory to St. Matthews Lutheran Church or The Record Street Home.

Mr. Terry Spurrier

Mr. Terry Harp Spurrier, 66, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, as the result of a heart attack. He was the husband of Suzanna Mikisits Spurrier.

Born Nov. 13, 1942, he was the son of the late Gordon W. and Grace Harp Spurrier.

He had worked for more than 40 years as an auto insurance appraiser and held a resident broker's Insurance license in casualty, health, life and property insurance.

Mr. Spurrier was a graduate of Frederick High School, Class of 1960, and at one time was a member and active with a United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School, directing the youth group and as an acting trustee. He was a devoted husband, father and friend and his greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. He always believed in going the extra mile, whether it was a personal or professional matter. He was a devoted fan of sports car racing.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, Markwood F. Spurrier and Helen G. Spurrier, both of Hagerstown; and will be sadly missed by special friends, Ron and Pat Huntzberry, of Frederick.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 27, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28, in Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army, 223 W. Fifth St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. Wade Martin Zirkle

Mr. Wade Martin Zirkle, 70, of Jefferson, died at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center in Frederick on Wednesday, March 25, 2009.

Born June 17, 1938, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Rev. Martin Luther Zirkle and Grace Lockwood Weaver Zirkle. He grew up in St. Paul's Lutheran Church where his father was pastor from December 1948 to July 1960. He is survived by his loving wife, Georgia Ann Eagle Zirkle.

Mr. Zirkle was a graduate of Middletown High School, Class of 1957, Frederick Community College, Columbia Technical Institute D.C., Towson University and University of Maryland. He was retired from Universal Computers of Houston, Texas, and also taught in Frederick County Public Schools.

Mr. Zirkle was a member of the Frederick Elks Lodge 684. He was interested in keeping family connections and serving the community. He was a former Boy Scout member having made the trip to Philmont, New Mexico, in 1956. He was also a member of the Brunswick Eagles and Moose Lodge, the Petersville Ruritan Club, Petersville Farmers Club, Jefferson Volunteer Fire Co., League of Women Voters, the South Mountain Heritage Society and many other various organizations. He attended Petersville Luther Chapel where he was the president of the council. He helped design the chapel at Mar-Lu-Ridge along with Phil Brohawn, the camps original director.

Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 5 E. Main St., Burkittsville. For the convenience of friends, the church will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Beginning at 8 p.m. the Elks will have a memorial service. The funeral service will be held at 11a.m. Saturday, March 28, in Burkittsville. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Pallbearers will be Denny Shafer, Kenny Bowers, Richard Grimes, Noel Werking, Pete Riley, John Shafer Jr. and John Wenner. Honorary pallbearers will be David Pry, Donald Guyton, Albert Zirkle, Manuel Baker and Richard Zecher.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mar-Lu-Ridge Camp, 3200 Mar-Lu-Ridge Road, Jefferson, MD 21755, attn: Director.

Arrangements are by Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Mrs. Pauline "Polly" Watkins

Mrs. Pauline "Polly" Watkins, 93, of Emmitsburg, died peacefully Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at St. Catherine's Nursing Center in Emmitsburg.

Born Dec. 18, 1915, in Woodfield, she was the daughter of the late James Rufus and Della (Waters) King.

Polly was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Emmitsburg and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women. She worked for the Daughters of Charity as a secretary for more than 21 years. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, attending Emmitsburg Senior Citizens, quilting with her friends, and most of all, she loved being with her family.

Surviving are children, John E. Watkins and wife, Sandy, of Waynesboro, Pa., Rachel P. Wivell and husband, William, of Emmitsburg, Deborah S. Clarke and husband, William, of Littlestown, Pa.; grandchildren, Stephen, Douglas and Wayne Watkins, Crystal Mumma, Todd and Tim Wivell, Amanda Neil and Michael Clarke; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Richard Watkins.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 28, at Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, 23640 Woodfield Road, Gaithersburg, with her pastor, the Rev. John Rudolph, of Trinity UM Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Damascus Methodist cemetery, Damascus.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 313 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, and again from 2 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday at Wesley Grove UM Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the St. Catherine's Nursing Center Benevolent Fund, 331 S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, MD 21727-9200.

Arrangements are by the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, Emmitsburg.

Mrs. Paula Niznan

Mrs. Paula Niznan, 91, of Frederick, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2009, at Heartfields Assisted Living. She was the wife of the late Rudolph Niznan.

Born Oct. 30, 1917, in Bronx, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late James and Concetta Romano.

She was a member of St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church in Walkersville. She previously volunteered at Oak Crest in Baltimore.

She is survived by her three children, Janice Thomas and husband, Leroy, of Ft. Pierce, Rudy Niznansky and wife, Diana, of Walkersville, and Neal Niznan and wife, Marcia, of Upper Darby, Pa.; six grandchildren, Jaime Mackercher, Jody Mackercher, Katie Niznansky, Jonathan Niznansky, Teresa Niznan and Matthew Niznan; three great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Sandee Denove, Helen Perry, Corinne O'Donnell and Gloria Eagan.

She will also be remembered by her caregiver and special friend, Sonia Godoy; and a special friend, MJ Kirsch.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Rocky Romano and Neal Romano.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, at St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville, with Father Andy Aaron officiating.

Interment will be on Friday at Christ the King cemetery in Franklin Lakes, N.J.
