Mr. George Bittrolff

Mr. George Frederick Bittrolff, 63, of Johnsville, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 29, 2009, at his home.

Born April 15, 1945, in Rockaway Beach, N.Y., he was the son of the late George F. and Madelyn Marie Kohler Bittrolff. He was the husband of Nina J. Bittrolff, his wife of 44 years.

Mr. Bittrolff had served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Glenn W. Eyler Post American Legion, Woodsboro. He retired from the U.S. Government, Health and Human Services, Rockville, as a printing specialist in 2005. He was currently working with Advantage Self Storage, Woodsboro. He was a life member of Potomac Falconers Association, former board member of the Spinal Cord Injury Network, and a former member of the Montgomery County Chapter of Toastmasters International. He enjoyed auctions, catfishing, falconry, antiquing and the outdoors.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter, Lisa Michelle Matthews of Johnsville; grandsons, Richard Byron Matthews Jr., David George Matthews and Brian Major Allen Matthews; sister, Madelyn Marie Ray of near Warrenton, Va.; mother-in-law, Nina Crawford of Johnsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Minerva Dailey.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. on his birthday, Wednesday, April 15, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown; a memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. Rev. Joseph Crawford, of Woodlawn Baptist Church, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ARC of Frederick County, 620A Research Drive, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Lucille Moneymaker Bogley

Mrs. Lucille Moneymaker Bogley, of Deltona, Fla., formerly of Darnestown, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Halifax Hospital, Daytona Beach, Fla. She was the wife of Paul Eugene Bogley Sr. for 62 years.

Born Oct. 5, 1929, in Cabin John, she was the daughter of the late Ethel Talley Moneymaker and Marshall (Dutch) Moneymaker.

Mrs. Bogley worked for Montgomery County Schools before retirement and was a former member of the Darnestown Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are son, Paul E. Bogley Jr. (Gene) and wife, Janet, of Monrovia; daughter, Judith Bogley Rankin and husband, William, of Frederick; son, David M. Bogley and wife, Debbie, of Germantown; one grandson, Jamie P. Bogley and wife, Barbara, of Middletown; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Bogley of Middletown; her sister, Shirley Barrack of Rockville; one brother, James Moneymaker of Niceville, Fla.; and another brother, Charles Moneymaker of Rockville. She is preceded in death by one brother, Marshall (Bobby) Moneymaker.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 3, in the Darnestown cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Stand Up 2 Cancer, 1801 W. Olympic Blvd., Pasadena, CA, 91199-1224, make checks payable to "SU2C; " or to Jimmy V. Foundation, The V Foundation for Cancer Research, 106 Towerview Court, Cary, NC 27513.

Mrs. F. Virginia Ludwig

Mrs. F. Virginia (Jenny) Rohrer Ludwig, 93, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Homewood.

Born Aug. 11, 1915, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Frank Davis and Daisy Rinehart Rohrer. She was the wife of the late Frederick Ludwig Jr. for 62 years.

Mrs. Ludwig was a lifelong member of First Christian Church. She was a homemaker and worked part time at Farmers & Merchants Bank for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia (Jenny) Putman and husband, Robert, of Frederick; and a son, Frederick (Fritz) Ludwig and wife, Joyce, of Pendleton, S.C. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Karen Kalin and husband, Bradley, of Philadelphia, Tammy Immer and husband, Corey, of New Market, Andrew Putman, and C. Scott Putman, both of Frederick; great-grandchildren, Ashley Kalin of Philadelphia and Ashton Immer of New Market. Mrs. Ludwig was predeceased by a brother, J. Edwin Rohrer.

There will be no viewing or visitation. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Beaver Creek cemetery, Hagerstown; Rev. Fred Harris of First Christian Church will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21740,0 or to Homewood Benevolent Fund, P.O. Box 250, Williamsport, MD 21795.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. N., Hagerstown.

Mr. Donald Dougherty Sr.

Mr. Donald Paul Dougherty Sr., 80, of Thurmont, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2009, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital, surrounded by many family members. He was the husband of Doris J. Nunemaker Dougherty, his wife of 57 years.

Born Oct. 18, 1928, in Woodsboro, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Lula M. Fogle Dougherty.

Donald started out selling cars for Creager Motor Co. in 1950, which later became Redding Chevrolet/Oldsmobile, then Wilhide Chevrolet. They then bought the Chevrolet franchise and moved to the present location. In June 1966, the dealership became known as Stull-Dougherty Chevrolet.

During his working career, Donald won numerous sales awards from General Motors. He was a life member of the Guardian Hose Company of Thurmont and the Thurmont Community Ambulance Company. He enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and NASCAR racing. He also enjoyed visiting the guys at Direct To You Gas Station.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Donald P. Dougherty Jr. of Mount Airy and Renee Rousseau; two sisters, Vivian Kline and husband, Bud, of Woodsboro, and Virginia Schildt and husband, Howard, of Thurmont; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special neighbors, Linda and Bill Plumley. He will also be remembered by his many friends and customers at the dealership. He was preceded in death by a brother, John R. Dougherty.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 3, with Rev. Jeff Gehris officiating.

Interment Blue Ridge cemetery, Thurmont.

Active pallbearers will be Buddy Bostain, Jim Bostain, Donald Fuss, Dick Stambaugh, Bill Plumley and Bern Sweeney. Honorary bearer will be Elmer Dick Fuss.

Contributions may be expressed to the Guardian Hose Company of Thurmont and the Thurmont Community Ambulance Service.

Mrs. Mary Mae Minnick

Mary Mae Minnick, 87, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, March 30, 2009, at the WMHS-Memorial Campus.

Born Dec. 30, 1921, in Kifer, she was the daughter of the late Clem Reckley and Flossie Mae (House) Reckley. Mrs. Minnick was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue Benson, as well as four brothers and five sisters.

Retired from the Centre Radiology as a medical secretary, Mary was formerly employed by Monumental Life Insurance Company and during World War II, she worked at the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America.

She was a member of the Allegany County Ornithological Society and a member and past president of the American Association of Medical Assistants. Mary was also a member and held offices at the Allegany and Garrett Counties Volunteer Firemen's Association Ladies Auxiliary; a member and treasurer of the Bowman's Addition Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary; and a member of the Winifred Road Church of Christ.

Mary enjoyed a full life of bowling, gardening, painting, hunting, fishing and especially traveling with her husband.

Mary leaves behind her husband of 44 years who was her "forever sweetheart," Garrett Lamar "Moose" Minnick; her daughters, Marla K. Gornall and her husband, Robert, of Big Pine Key, Fla., and Sally Jo Mitchell and her husband, Mike, of Cumberland; her sister, Helen Harne of Thurmont; as well as seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mary also leaves behind a large and loving extended family of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends that number as the stars in the sky.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland; AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at the funeral home; Rev. John Herbst will officiate.

Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans' cemetery at Rocky Gap.

This tiny lady loved everyone she knew and will leave a big hole in the lives of her family and loved ones.

Mr. Douglas Leatherman

Mr. Douglas B. Leatherman, 44, of Walkersville, died on Thursday, March 26, 2009.

He was the husband of Lori L. (Vance) Leatherman.

Born on Jan. 23, 1965, in Frederick, he was the son of R. Dwight Leatherman and Marlene (Stottlemyer) Megee.

Mr. Leatherman was a member of the Fredericktowne Baptist Church. He enjoyed coaching baseball for Walkersville High School and the Frederick American Legion.

He was devoted to his family and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, grandfather and friend.

Surviving beside his wife and parents are, two sons, Daniel C. Leatherman and his wife, Brianna, Kyle N. Leatherman; two grandchildren, Braedon and Lorelai Leatherman; a brother, Robert Leatherman and wife, Leslie; step-father, Gary Megee; father and mother-in law, Charles and Virginia Vance; two half-brothers, Michael S. Leatherman, Jason Megee; half-sister, Tanya A. Leatherman; and special friends, Tommy Long, Dan Herche, Dave Fogle and Victoria Tipton. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and other relatives.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 3, at Fredericktowne Baptist Church, 8645 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville, with Rev. Gary Byers officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services.

Serving as pallbearers will be Denny Long, Lance Young, Chris Best, Billy Winningham, Rick Stottlemyer and Rodney Young. Interment will be held in Utica cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 S. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Mrs. Madeline Kiss

Madeline Irene Kiss, 86, of Union Bridge, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at her home following an extended illness.

Born Nov. 26, 1922, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Fisher and Thelma Angleberger Putman. She was the wife of Thomas Kiss, who predeceased her in 1998.

Mrs. Kiss was a 1939 graduate of New Windsor High School. She was formerly employed at Murphy's 5 and 10 Cent Store in Westminster and then Israel's Department Store, Union Bridge, retiring in 1955.

Surviving are five nieces, three nephews and a number of cousins. She will be remembered by her devoted neighbors, Robert and Kim Eckard.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 3, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge. Rev. David Bare, interim pastor of St. James Lutheran Church, Union Bridge, will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, Uniontown.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to The American Diabetes Association, Baltimore Office, 800 Wyman Park Drive, Suite 110, Baltimore, MD 21211.

Mrs. Albenia Brashears

Mrs. Albenia "Libby" E. Brashears, 79, of Jefferson, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at Montgomery General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Richard Brashears and her first husband, Richard Kermit Woods.

Born Aug. 30, 1929, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Bernice Umberger O'Bryan.

Libby enjoyed gardening and bowling.

She is survived by five sons, Richard "Steve" Woods and wife, Debra M., Larry Wayne Woods, Robert Eugene Woods and wife, Debbie, David Lee Woods and wife, Dawn, and Michael Edward Woods; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Bernard Thomas O'Bryan; and sister, Alice Mae Cromwell.

Services and interment will be private.

Mrs. Mary Townsend

Mary Dorothy Ostmann Townsend, 80, of Frederick, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Born on Feb. 14, 1929, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Bernard Ostmann and Irene Buckley Ostmann O'Connor.

Mrs. Townsend had an extensive career as a runway fashion model in Washington and New York. In 1948, she became the first weather girl on television in Washington as well as Miss Dr. Pepper. She continued modeling in Washington and was the director of the Wendy Ward Charm School in Maryland. Her career led her to become the fashion coordinator of Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase. She was a Vidal Sassoon model and was in the newspapers quite often.

She was the beloved wife of Richard Allen Townsend and the loving mother to children, Richard Joseph Pelicano Jr., Deborah Ann Palmisano and step-children, Richard George Townsend, Robert Henry Townsend, Suzanne Christine Clarey. Mrs. Townsend was the devoted grandmother of granddaughter, Erin Christina Pelicano Cauble and great-grandchildren, Liam Dominic Cauble and Bennett Pelicano Cauble. Mary was preceded in death by grandson, Dominic Pelicano.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at Chapel of Gate of Heaven cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring. Father Peter J. Sweeney will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Dominic Pelicano Memorial Scholarship Fund, 2486 Five Shillings Road, Frederick, MD 21701.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, P.A., 106 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. Clark Leslie Keeney

Mr. Clark Leslie Keeney, 73, of Keymar, passed peacefully on March 30, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Frederick.

Clark was the son of the late Leslie Levi and Viola Marie Ohler Keeney of Walkersville.

Clark is survived by his wife, Cathy A. Keeney of Keymar; a daughter, Toni Tiller Johnson and husband, Jeremy; and grandchildren, Ryan, Cameron and Sarah of Chambersburg, Pa.; in-laws, John F. and Alberta Bradley and children; brothers- and sisters-in-law, of upstate Pennsylvania; son, Troy; and daughters, Stacey, Deana and Allison, and special sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and David Smith of Walkersville. He will be remembered by dear friends Leonard and Maggie Rice of Walkersville, John and Debbie Taulton of Brunswick, and Roy F. and Mary Smith of Thurmont; as well as all the friends who visited with him during his illness.

Clark was born in Walkersville and graduated from Walkersville High, served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne, and returned to Maryland to become a third-generation stonemason.

Clark loved fishing, especially with Leonard, country music and karaoke. He played softball with the Alleycats, bowled with the Ken Grimes bowling team, played soccer with the Mason Dixon League, coached the Avalon Restaurant softball team, and was breakfast chairman at American Legion Post 282 for many years. He was a member of American Legion Post 282 Woodsboro, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2226, Littlestown, Pa., and will be remembered by his many friends and karaoke fans at each.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at Woodsboro American Legion Post 282.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Clark L. Keeney Memorial Fund, c/o Woodsboro American Legion Post 282, 101 W. Elizabeth St., Woodsboro, MD 21798.
