Mr. Robert Haydn Powell

Mr. Robert Haydn Powell, 71, formerly of Union Bridge, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009, at his residence in Las Cruces, N.M., after a lengthy illness. He moved to New Mexico with his family in December 2008. Robert was born in Carbondale, Pa., the son of Haydn and Betty (Burch) Powell and was baptized in the Presbyterian Church there. He later transferred his membership to the National Presbyterian Church in Washington.

He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale. He studied business law in Washington at Benjamin Franklin University and also completed courses in purchasing management at George Washington University.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, Robert completed his basic training at Samson Air Force Base in New York and was assigned to the Office of Wing Civil Engineer at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington. His career in the electronics industry began after his discharge from the Air Force in 1959. Robert was employed by electronic firms in the Washington/Maryland/Virginia metropolitan area and Pennsylvania, in positions of management and sales. He received numerous awards in recognition of his outstanding performances in outside sales. He was a member of AMVETS and was an avid numismatist.

Mr. Powell is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Hunziker Powell; sons, Robert Haydn Powell II of Magalia, Calif., and Kevin Lee Powell of Las Cruces, N.M.; granddaughters, Bobbi Lee Canter and Kelli Ann Powell of Paradise, Calif.; and a sister, Sally Masters of Danville, Ill.

Funeral services took place at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 26, at Getz Funeral Home in Las Cruces. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana, Las Cruces, NM 88005.

Mr. Frank A. Moudry

Frank A. Moudry, 46, of Woodsboro, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at the North Hampton Nursing Home. Frank was born in Frederick, and as a child moved with his family to Hazard, Ky. In Frank's early 20s, he moved back to Frederick and worked as a surveyor until his death. Frank enjoyed spending time with his friends, fishing and hunting.

Frank was preceded in death by his father, Michael L. Moudry, and his mother, Jeanette Ritchie Moudry. He is survived by his brother, Michael L. Moudry Jr. He will also be remembered by his special friend, Samantha Wolfe of Woodsboro.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 5, at Lighthouse Baptist Church, 21 E. Frederick St., Walkersville, MD 21793. Pastor Gary Hubble will officiate the ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Lighthouse Baptist Church at the above address.

Mr. Robert E. "Bob" Leeper

Robert E. "Bob" Leeper, 79, of Bolivar, Ohio, died Monday evening, March 30, 2009, in the Affinity Medical Center at Massillon following a two-week illness.

He was born June 26, 1929, in Cleveland and raised in Leesville, Ohio, and was the son of the late William W. and Gertrude Olga Thomas Leeper Sr.

He graduated from the former Dellroy High School in 1947. He joined the Navy in 1949 and married his first wife, Patricia (O'Connor), the mother of surviving daughter, Mrs. Stanley (Patricia) Powell of Frederick, and son, Michael (Mary Jo) Leeper of Elyria, Ohio.

Patricia died in 1974, and Bob's youngest son, Robert Thomas Leeper, currently of Bolivar, was born in 1976 with his second wife, Sandy. He married Marlene Farnum Reinhart in 1983 in Maryland and they retired together in Bolivar in 1994, where he enjoyed the company of his family and friends after an absence of 45 years.

In addition to Bob's children, also surviving are Marlene's children, Mrs. Richard (D'Nece D.) Dillbeck of Sacramento, Calif., and William J. (Toni) Reinhart III of Reston, Va. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Susan Powell, Stanley Powell Jr., Paul Michael Powell and Michael Robert Leeper; and great-grandsons, Ryan Michael Powell, Nathan Robert Powell and Noah Benjamin Powell, all residents of Maryland.

Bob loved to play cards, darts, horseshoes and pool, all of which he taught his sons and grandsons, who refer to him lovingly as "Pop."

Also surviving are nephews, Francis A. "Buddy" (Rhonda) Leeper Jr., William (Betty) Leeper, Stephen (Lana) Tope and William James "Jim" Leeper; nieces, Susan (Rick) Andrukat, Mrs. Harold (Janette Lee) Haver, Linda Tanner and Lira Maywood; and stepgrandsons, Joel and Matt Soul? of California.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas J., Francis A. "Fritz" and William W. "Bill" Leeper Jr.; two sisters, Marilyn and Shirley Leeper; and his father-image, Uncle Francis Leeper.

His loving and helpful ways will be sorely missed by sisters, Dorothy Boswell of Prescott, Ariz., and Mrs. Elmer (Alice) Tope of Bolivar, Ohio; cousins, Joy and Gordon (Sharon) Leeper of Michigan; sisters-in-law, Ellen Leeper of Sherrodsville, Mary Leeper of Dover and Gloria Leeper of Leesville; his mother-image, Aunt Mabel Leeper of Waterford, Mich.; and his many, many friends.

Bob's life and worth are summed up by the words inscribed on his monument, "Quiet Hero."

He was a member of the Leesville United Methodist Church, where he attended with many of his family members, and was a four-year U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He enjoyed the fellowship of the Conotton Valley Senior Citizens Card Club on Wednesdays, was a member of the Tuscarawas County YMCA for 15 years and participated in the Tuscarawas Co. Senior Citizens Bowling League at Boulevard Lanes. Bob worked as a union plumber in Washington for 181Ú2 years. He then worked as a government plumber at the U.S. Senate, where he retired after 22 years service.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, April 4, in Leesville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jerralyn Myers officiating. Interment will follow in the Leesville cemetery, where the Carroll County American Legion, VFW and DAV will conduct military graveside services.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 3, in Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home, Sherrodsville, Ohio.

Mrs. Martha Lovell

Mrs. Martha Mae (Marty) Lovell, 89, of Garfield, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009, at the Fahrney Keedy Memorial Home of Boonsboro.

Born Feb. 26, 1920, at Garfield, she was the daughter of the late Rexford and Goldie R. (Wolfe) Kuhn.

She graduated from Middletown High School, Class of 1937, and from Washington County School of Nursing in 1941.

She was employed with the Frederick County Board of Education as a school bus driver and retired in 1991 from Mountain Gate Restaurant as an office employee.

She was a life-long member of the Garfield United Methodist Church where she was very active in earlier years serving as adult Sunday School teacher and was instrumental in starting the church quilt show and bazaar in 1976.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Dorsey J. Lovell; son, Larry K. Lovell and wife, Beverly, of Garfield; grandson, David Lovell and wife, Misti, of Myersville; stepgrandson, Neil Frey and wife, Deborah, of Waynesboro, Pa.; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Lovell, Cody Frey and Lindsey Frey; sisters, Virginia Draper of Myersville, Betty Harsh and husband, Buck, of Williamsport, Jeannette Kuhn of Wolfsville, and Judy House and husband, Robert, of Frederick; brothers, Donald Kuhn and wife, Naomi, Paul Kuhn and wife, Betty, all of Wolfsville, John Kuhn and wife, Ruth, of Middletown and George Kuhn of Sabillasville; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte (Dolly) Beachley of Middletown, and brothers-in-law, Richard Beachley of Middletown and Dale Draper of Myersville.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 6, from the Garfield United Methodist Church, with Pastor Katie Bishop officiating. Burial will be in the Garfield United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 5, at the J.L. Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg.

Mr. Robert L. Cassidy

Mr. Robert L. "Butch" Cassidy, 81, of Frederick, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Mary "Snookie" Proud Cassidy.

Born Oct. 12, 1927, in Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Thomas J. and Mary M. Kearns Cassidy. He enlisted and proudly served his country during the closing days of World War II. He was recalled to duty during the Korean conflict. He served with honor, and was a member of the American Legion Post 11. He was retired from the Government Printing Office, and later worked part-time for Montgomery County government. Mr. Cassidy had a great love for his entire family and enjoyed spending time with them all. A gentle, caring man, he was quick to lend a hand to anyone in need, and quietly served as a role model to his many friends and family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He showed us all the value of simple things, serving others and that actions are far more valuable than words. He was a member of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Donna L. Porreco and husband, Rocco, Robert J. Cassidy and wife, Ruth, and Daniel J. Cassidy and wife, Kathleen, all of Frederick, and David W. Cassidy and wife, Patty, of Gaithersburg; one sister, Patricia Meier and husband, Robert, of Silver Spring; and five grandchildren, Ashley and Colleen Marcotte and Susanne, Kyle and Seamus Cassidy; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Charles Cassidy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E. Second St., Frederick. Mr. Cassidy is to be carried to Mount Olivet cemetery in Frederick by horse drawn caisson.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the poor, 116 E. Second St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. John Ferguson

Mr. John Bruce Ferguson, 64, of Clarksburg, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Judy K. Ferguson, his wife of 42 years.

Born March 12, 1945, in Westerly, R.I., he was a son of the late John James and Barbara Agnes Craig Ferguson.

Mr. Ferguson was a fire protection engineer. He owned and operated Ferguson Engineering. He was a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, the National Fire Protection Assocation, and the International Code Council.

He was very active in fast-pitch softball, and was one of the founders of the Damascus Flames, the Damascus Girls Softball League. He was also an active umpire in the N.S.A. and A.S.A., and was a virtual encyclopedia of sports trivia.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Kathy Ferguson and JoAnne Ferguson and partner, Jenn Surface; two brothers, Martin Ferguson and Michael Ferguson; three sisters, Barbara Snyder, Rosemary Culkins and Leslie Wilson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Ferguson is preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Ferguson.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 6, at Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. A memorial celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, 4103 Prices Distillery Road, Ijamsville. Inurnment will be private.

The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Children's National Medical Center, 111 Michigan Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20010.

Mrs. Kate Lohmann

Mrs. Kate Maria Lohmann, 90, formerly of St. Catherine's Nursing Center in Emmitsburg, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Walkersville. She was the widow of the late Joseph Lohmann, who died in 2001, after 59 years of marriage.

Born April 23, 1918, in Wuppertal, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Otto Sr. and Antonie Peus. Her dedication and sense of commitment to children and family life were always strong and resolute.

Kate worked as a private secretary for the vice president of a brewery in Germany for eight years before moving to the United States with her husband and two daughters in 1952. She continued to do administrative work after settling down in New York state.

Kate was one of the 100 finalists chosen in the 1956 Pillsbury Bake-Off. That year, Ronald Reagan was the Pillsbury Co.'s spokesman at New York City's Waldorf-Astoria, where he emceed the Bake-Off Awards program in which Kate participated.

Her hobbies included reading, crafts, music and traveling. She was also a very accomplished seamstress. This, coupled with her skills at knitting, crocheting and embroidering, lent itself to the production of beautiful tablecloths, doilies, items of clothing and more. She played several musical instruments, including the accordion, piano and lute. Kate had a good sense of humor and liked to talk to people.

She is survived by a daughter, Trudy K. Murtaugh of Walkersville; a sister, Hedwig Danzer of Munich, Germany; two grandchildren, Katrina A. Murtaugh and Christopher Grant, both of Frederick County; and many nieces and nephews in Germany. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemarie Grant; a son-in-law, Michael J. Murtaugh; and two brothers, Otto Peus Jr. and Werner Peus.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 6, at Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. 15 N., Frederick. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed at 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at St. Anthony Shrine, 106150 St. Anthony Road, Emmitsburg. The Rev. Jack Lombardi will be the celebrant.

Floral tributes are welcome and may be delivered to the Chapel Mausoleum at Resthaven on Monday. Or memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702, or to St. Catherine's Nursing Center, 331 S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, MD 21727.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Mrs. Gladys Schaible

Gladys L. (Michel) Schaible, 93, of Mount Airy, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at her home.

She was the spouse of the late Edward Lee Schaible, who preceded her in death in March 1985.

She was born Nov. 25, 1915, in Baltimore, as the daughter of the late Henry Frederick Michel Sr. and late Theresa Downey Michel.

She was a homemaker, Past Worthy Matron and member of the Mount Airy Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 95 and a member of Calvary Lutheran Church Mount Airy.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Edward Henry and Betty Jane Schaible of Mount Airy; brother, Henry F. Michel of Florida; three granddaughters, Sandra L. Martin of Taylorsville, Debra L. Epley of Rockville and Pamela A. Harding of Mount Airy; seven great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; and is also survived by three nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma G. Hillary.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery, 5923 Woodville Road, Mount Airy.

Contributions may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, 16151 Old Frederick Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Mrs. Jean Pecor

Jean Marie Garrison Pecor, 85, of Frederick, died Friday, April 3, 2009, after a long, protracted illness, at Homewood of Crumland Farms. She was the wife of 59 years to the late George Frederick Pecor, who died in 2003.

Born May 12, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Wright Garrison.

During her life, Mrs. Pecor lived in Maywood, Ill., Palatine, Ill., Greenbelt, Morenci, Mich., Lively, Va., and the last nine years in Frederick. She enjoyed being a housewife and being involved in her children's activities and school, serving as a den mother and president of the PTA at St. Hugh Catholic School from 1968 to 1971.

While living in Virginia, Mrs. Pecor was a very active volunteer at the Rappahanock General Hospital and was in charge of the gift shop. She loved all the creative pursuits, particularly sewing and painting. One of her paintings was exhibited at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center in the Homewood Art Show. However, she considered her biggest accomplishment her three sons, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren, whom she influenced to always put family first.

Mrs. Pecor was the proud, loving mother of her sons, Robert and his wife, Christine, of Frederick, Donald and wife, Kathleen, of Roy, Utah, and James and wife, Patricia, of Shady Side; her eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 11:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, April 7, at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon at church. Father Keith W. Boisvert will officiate. Interment will be at the St. John Catholic cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Katharine Drexel Parish Building Fund, 8428 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, Frederick.
