Mr. George Wachter

Mr. George Marshall Wachter, 59, of Hanover, Pa., died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Hanover General Hospital, after an extended illness.

Born Oct. 30, 1949, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Thomas Marshall and Mary Evelyn Buffington Wachter. He was the husband of Debbie Kline Wachter, his wife of 38 years.

Mr. Wachter was a 1967 graduate of Walkersville High School and a member of Mt. Zion Haugh's Lutheran Church. He was self-employed as a dairy farmer and retired from the Frederick County Highway Department after 19 years of employment. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, crossword puzzles and antiquing and was an avid gardener.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Maresa Wachter of Annapolis; two sons, T. Michael Wachter of New Oxford, Pa., and T. Mathew Wachter and wife, Gabe, of Hanover; three grandchildren, Kasandra and Madelyn Wachter, and Silas M. Wachter; two sisters, Miriam L. Devilbiss of near New Windsor, Dean W. Kolb of Austin, Texas; two nieces; and two nephews. He will be remembered by former daughter-in-law, Lydia Elsner of Littlestown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge; Rev. Michael Adams, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Upperco, will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 10, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 89, Upperco, MD 21155.

Mrs. Juanita Herr

Juanita Rose Herr, of Frederick, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at College View Nursing Home, Frederick. She was known as Rose to her friends at the Taney Apartments.

Born in 1913, in Palmyra, Miss., she was one of 10 children born to Frank and Grace Willis. She lived most of her life in the Chicago area, moving to Frederick in 1988.

She was the last of her generation, and is survived by her sons, Mark Willis Herr of Frederick and Charles Castle of Baltimore; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren, including Isabel Mary Lou Castle of Frederick.

Her remains will be interred at the Woodlawn cemetery in River Forest, Ill., in the family plot with her family that preceded her in death.

Mr. Kenneth Lister

Mr. Kenneth Vail Lister, of Frederick, passed away at Frederick Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the age of 86. He was the loving husband of Claire A. Lister, his wife of 62 years.

Kenny was born on May 3, 1923, in Newark, N.J., the son of the late Albert E. Lister and Bessie Marie Cox. After graduating from East Orange High School in 1943, where he played basketball, he joined the United States Army in 1943. Sgt. Lister served with the 391st Infantry Regiment, 98th Division, in Hawaii and Japan, and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Ken returned to New Jersey and married his sweetheart, Claire Flanagan. They lived in Newark and Clifton before moving to Livingston, N.J., where they raised their family. Ken worked as a printer for Prudential Insurance Co. and Style Printing before joining Rae Publishing Co., where he advanced to vice president. He bought Rovy Press in East Hanover in 1976, which was run as a family business until he retired in 1997. Shortly before his retirement, the couple moved to Pennsylvania for five years and then to Frederick, where they have lived for the past 10 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Ron Lister and his wife, Lynda, of Lake Ariel, Pa., Gayle Whitenight and her husband, Ira, of Hillsborough, N.J., Rick Lister and his wife, Sara, of Newton, N.J., and Patty Scherer and her husband, Joe, of Frederick; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 13, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14 at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E. Second St., Frederick. Officiating clergy will be Father Daniel Goulet.

Interment with military honors will be held at the family plot at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at Pequest Union cemetery in Great Meadows, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Kenny Lister's name to Frederick Memorial Hospital Regional Cancer Therapy Center, 501 W. Seventh St., Frederick, MD 21701; FMH.org/oncology.cfm.

Mr. John Friedman

John Stephen Friedman, 58, formerly a resident of 9506 Glade Ave., Walkersville, and more recently a resident of Yuma, Ariz., died Thursday, April 2, 2009, near his home in Yuma.

Born April 22, 1950, in Washington, he was the son of Edna and the late Irving Friedman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl Friedman, in 2006.

He was a 1968 graduate of Sandy Springs Friends School and a 1972 graduate of Kalamazoo College, Michigan. He later graduated from the University of Maryland, School of Social Work, with his master's degree in 1974.

He was employed by the Frederick County Mental Health Clinic, Frederick.

He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Walkersville.

He is survived by his three children, Carson M. Cancel of Clarksburg, Anne B. Brown of Annapolis and Christopher J. Friedman of Alexandria, Va.; ex-wife, Rosalind Custard of Alexandria, Va.; two brothers, Kenneth Friedman of Charlotte, N.C., and Reid Chambers of Falls Church, Va.; and one grandchild, Michael Cancel.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Chambers.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 13, at Bethesda United Church of Christ, 10010 Fernwood Road, Bethesda, with a reception to follow. Minister Donna Schram will officiate.

The family welcomes all friends to attend this service and reception.

Mrs. Janet Staiger

Mrs. Janet Blair (Holler) Staiger, 63, of Catonsville, passed away peacefully at her home Monday, April 6, 2009, following a three and a half year battle with brain cancer (GBM).

Born May 6, 1945, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Blair Stouffer Holler and the late Marjorie Lee (Raupach) Holler. She was predeceased by her truelove and husband of 36 years, Eugene V. Staiger Jr., on July 19, 2001.

Janet was a member of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church at Ellicott Mills, Ellicott City, and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, collecting dolls, bears, and old books of children's stories, sitting on her porch on a peaceful afternoon counting goldfinches, tending to her flower garden in tribute to her husband's long time vegetable garden, and shopping at the Calico Cat, the Good Life Market, and the used book and antique stores of Ellicott City.

She is survived by her son, Christopher V. Staiger, his wife Jennifer, and their sons, Caleb and Wyatt, of Emmitsburg; her sister, Barbara Sue Trail and--husband, Don, of Ft. Ashby, W.Va.; Barbara Sue's sons, Jim, Doug, and Michael Kirkland, and their families; her Aunt Anna Mae (Holler) Brakeall and husband, Don, of Ridgely, W.Va.; and her Aunt Dottie (Raupach) Williams of Philadelphia, Pa.; as well as numerous cousins and their families.

Janet--was predeceased by her beloved nephew and godson, Shane Kirkland, on Jan. 31, 1986, and many dear aunts, uncles, and cousins from a large, extended family originating in the Cumberland area.

The family would like to especially thank Barbara Sue Trail (Aunt Suzie) for her help and support following Janet's initial treatment; Beverly Foster and Debbie Bryan for their time and support at years of doctors' appointments; childhood friend, Betty Lapinski, and cousin, Mina Uhl for their years of friendship and final comfort at Janet's bedside; and Ms. Tianca Breedlove who dedicated so much of her time and energy while constantly going above and beyond the call of duty as Janet's primary caregiver for the last--eight months. Lastly, the doctors and staff of the St. Agnes Cancer Center, led by Dr. Carole Miller, and the surgeons of Johns Hopkins University Hospital deserve special commendation for implementing a treatment plan that truly allowed Janet to reclaim her life and independence for more than--two--years between the onset and final stages of a devastating illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. April 18, at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, 3695 Rogers Ave.,--Ellicott City, MD, 21043. The Rev. Kirk A. Kubicek will be celebrant. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the 'Rector's Discretionary Fund' at St. Peter's.

A private interment will follow at a later date at the Madley Church cemetery in Madley, Pa., where--Janet Blair--will rest with her husband, and be surrounded by her Holler, Stouffer, and Lybarger forebears on a beautiful hilltop in the mountains of south central Pennsylvania.

Mrs. Mary Shaw Williams

Mrs. Mary Shaw Williams, 91, of Poolesville, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009.

She was married Feb. 25, 1941, to Rodger "Weets" Williams Jr., of Poolesville, who died in 1987.

Born Aug. 3, 1917, in Barnesville, she was the daughter of the late William Clifton and Emily Darby Brown.

Mrs. Williams graduated from Rockville High School in 1935, and attended Strayer College. She worked as a patent law secretary in Washington.

Mary Shaw was the beloved mother of Rodger Walter Williams III (Gwen), of Frederick, William Clifton Williams (Bonnie), of Poolesville, and Emily Jane Perry (William), of Herndon, Va.

She was the beloved grandmother of Rodger Walter IV, David (Teri), Bradley and Amanda Williams, Patricia (Terry) Jacobs and Rodger Perry. Mrs. Williams was also survived by seven great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and one niece, Sally Allnutt Hunter.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, William Griffith Perry.

The family would like to thank Melyssa Campbell, Pat Smith and Dorothy Fox for the care given their mother.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 13, at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109), Barnesville (hiltonfh.com).

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 20100 Fisher Ave., Poolesville.

Interment will be in Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville.

Mrs. Betty Rogers

Mrs. Betty Olean Rogers died Saturday, April 4, 2009, in Vero Beach, Fla. Born Oct. 21, 1931, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of Ralph and Gladys Castle.

Her husband of 50 years, Charles Reese Rogers of Baltimore, died in February 2004.

Betty has two surviving children, Peter Rogers of Brookeville and Holly Beach of Vero Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Amy Goforth, Erica Gallagher, Rita Newby, Kenny Beach, and Christina Beach; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Barthel; and one half brother, Ralph Castle Jr.

She was preceded in death by sister, Marie Davis.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 27015 Ridge Road, Damascus. The family will receive friends and family before and immediately following the service.

Arrangements are by Seawinds Funeral Home, Vero Beach, Fla.

Mr. Donald Delawder

Mr. Donald Franklin Delawder, 68, of Mathias, W.Va., died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at his residence near Mathias.

Born Feb. 28, 1941, in Mathias, he was a son of Marie Kohn Delawder of Mathias, and the late Franklin Delawder.

He worked in the frozen food department at Giant Foods, and was a member of Mountain View Church of the Brethren in Mathias.

On March 19, 2009, he married the former Hazel Stokes who survives.

Also surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Jennifer Delawder of Frederick County, Md.; brothers, Merl and Darrell Delawder, both of Mathias, Glen Delawder of Harrisonburg, and Bobby Delawder of Florida; a sister, Connie Delawder of Timberville; a granddaughter, Madelynn Moore; stepchildren, Mary Marselas and Crystal Mitchell, both of Point of Rocks, Md.; four step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

The Reverends Olin Bailey and Landis Dove will conduct a funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday, at Mountain View Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family received friends Thursday, at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

Rev. James Lloyd Rousey Jr.

Rev. James Lloyd Rousey Jr., 73, of Sykesville, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the Sinai Hospital, Baltimore.

Born Jan. 10, 1936, in Clinton, Ill., he was the son of the late James Lloyd Rousey Sr., and the late Frances Iola Gallaher Knight. He was the husband of Ruth Ann Rousey (nee Atteberry), his wife of 51 years.

Jim had worked as an assistant director of facilities maintenance for the Maryland Department of Corrections. He had served as an interim pastor for numerous churches over the years. He was also a prison chaplain for many years. Rev. Rousey was known to all for his simple compassionate care and respect for everyone no matter what the situation. He loved meeting people and was always there to help them. He enjoyed woodworking and motorcycles. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons and daughters-in-law, James W. and Tammy Rousey of Sykesville, John M. Rousey of Sykesville, and Mohy and Sharine Ahmed of Sykesville; former daughter-in-law, Shannon Rousey of Westminster; brothers, Terry Rousey of Floyd's Knob, Ind., and Steve Rousey of Champaigne, Ill.; and grandchildren, Matthew Kushel and wife, Melissa; Patrick Rousey, Justin Rousey, Megan Kushel, Connor Rousey, Zanib and Habiba Ahmed, and Kathrine and A.J. Thawly.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Northwest Baptist Church (300 Westminster Road), Reisterstown, with Pastor Gary Glanville officiating. Interment will be in Springfield cemetery, Sykesville.

The family received friends Thursday, and will receieve friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Nancy Camille LeGore Boyle

Mrs. Nancy Camille LeGore Boyle, 73, of Emmitsburg, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009, at St. Catherine's Nursing Center, Emmitsburg, after a lengthy illness. She was the cherished wife of Patrick B. Boyle, her husband of 50 years.

Born Oct. 21, 1935, in Frederick, Nancy grew up in LeGore, and graduated from Walkersville High School in 1954. She graduated from Centenary Junior College in Ohio with an associates degree and from the University of Maryland in 1958, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree with Phi Beta Kappa honors. Throughout her scholastic years, she competed in many team sports and extra curricular activities. After graduation, Nancy was employed by Frederick Board of Education as a physical education teacher at Frederick High School and as a girls basketball referee.

Studious and an excellent listener, she had many and diverse interests. She excelled as a pianist, seamstress, artist and calligrapher. Nancy had an incredible memory for movie, TV and music personalities, as well as for local and world history.

Auction and yard sale attendance provided found gems and lifetime friends. The owner of many collections, she enjoyed the hunt for sheet music, salt and pepper shakers, jewelry, Snowbabies, cookie jars, cookbooks, Beanie Babies, Jim Shore and Princess Diana memorabilia. She had her own extensive research library on antiques and collectibles. Nancy was renowned for sending greeting cards and her handwritten correspondence with all she knew. Her creative hobbies of sewing, tole painting, baking and canning won many awards at local, county and state competitions. She volunteered at the Mother Seton School in the art department while her children were in attendance. For many years Nancy created the weekly sale signs for the family grocery store in Emmitsburg; each was a work of art.

In addition to being survived by her husband, Pat, she was the beloved mother of Susan E. Boyle and friend, James A. Bowers, of Dover, Pa., Angela E. Buszinski and husband, David, of Slippery Rock, Pa., Christopher P. Boyle and wife, Lisa, of Frederick, and Timothy C. Boyle and wife, Patricia, of Fairfield, Pa.; the loving and doting grandmother of Erin Collins, Jennifer and Brett Boyle, and Patrick, Joshua and Kyris Boyle. She was the eldest sister of Trina Gelfond, Suzanne Moberly and Terrie Wills. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Susan LeGore. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews and will be sadly missed by her devoted friends, Karen and Howard, Betty and Mike, Peggy and Donald, and Carrol Ann and Joanne.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 13, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, with Father Steve Trzecieski, C.N., and Father Paul Murphy officiating.

Burial will follow in the Emmitsburg Memorial cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be her son, Christopher Boyle; grandson, Brett Boyle; nephews, Lee Koontz, Daniel Sprankle and Brian Crabtree; and friends Steven Brenize, Kerry Shorb and George Buszinski.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Victory Junction Gang, 4500 Adam's Way, Randleman, NC 27317; the Emmitsburg Vigilant Hose Co., P.O. Box 171, Emmitsburg, MD 21727; or the Emmitsburg Ambulance Co., Creamery Road, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
