March 7, 2001

Edith Laws Spann of Easton died on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital in Easton. She was 86.

Born in Washington, D.C. on December 4, 1914, she was the daughter of the late John Thornley and Annie Hunter Laws. As a resident of the Washington, D.C. area, she received her education there and began working for the C & P Telephone Company, the American Red Cross, and the North Bethesda Church. In 1972, she moved to Florida but only until July 1973 when she moved to Easton.

She was a member of the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Easton where she was active in the Thrift Shop. She was also active in the American Red Cross and as a volunteer for the Democratic Party. Her husband for over fifty years, George Klepfer Spann, is deceased.

Mrs. Spann is survived by two sons, George Kent Spann and Thomas Edward Spann, both of Easton; a cousin, Babbette Trader of Sarasota, FL; and many friends.

Memorial services will be held at the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Easton on Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at 2:00 PM. Burial in the Memorial Garden at the church will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 100 Peachblossom Road, Easton, MD 21601.

Roselyn Wilk Thomas of Dover, Delaware died on March 7, 2001 at Kent General Hospital in Dover. She was 77.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on June 18, 1923 the daughter of the late Abraham and Sarah Book Wilk. After the death of her first husband in World War II she married David Koenigsburg and later remarried to Nathaniel Thomas Jr. They made their home in Baltimore, Md. and later Ingleside, Md. After his death in September of 1987, Mrs. Thomas moved to Dover, Delaware.There she volunteered at the harvest group and the modern maturity center, where she was very active. Mrs. Thomas enjoyed bingo.

She is survived by two children: a son: Barron Koenigsburg of Baltimore, Md. and a daughter: Tina Thomas of Cranford, NJ. along with a sister: Minerva Rein of Tucson, AZ. She is also survived by a granddaughter: Kandi Childress of Cranford, NJ.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday March 13, 2001 at 1:00 PM at Eastern Shore Veterans cemetery near Hurlock, Md.

March 6, 2001

Harrington M. Bell, Jr. of Chestertown, Md. died on March 6, 2001 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. He was 92.

Born in Seaford, DE on March 23, 1908, he was the son of the late Harrington M. and Abbye Hornsby Bell. Mr. Bell was raised on his fathers three masted scooner, sailing to Africa.

He was a 1932 graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania Mr. Bell worked with DuPont in Wilmington, DE until 1970 when he retired. After first retiring to Rehobeth, DE, he and his wife moved to Chestertown, MD.

In addition to his wife: Helen Estelle Watts Bell of 60 years, he is survived by 2 sons: Harrington M. Bell III of Havertown, PA and Dr. John Watts Bell of Pasco, Washington along with their respective families.

Services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Kent County P.O. Box 352 Chestertown, Md. 21620

March 4, 2001

Georgene Reba Miner, of Easton, died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, Md. on Sunday March 4, 2001. She was 84.

Born on February 25, 1917 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She was the daughter of the late George R. and Ara Compton Cross. After graduating from public school in Wink, Texas she attended North Western Oklahoma State University. In 1940 she began a 32 year career with the Federal Government as an accountant and computer specialist. She retired from the Office of Economic Opportunity in 1972. In 1988 she moved to LaCanada, Ca. where she made her home with her daughter Patricia. In 1999 she moved to Easton.

Mrs. Miner was a member of the Unity Church of Pasadena, Ca. She was also a member, since 1937 of the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis. She served as the A.M.O.R.C. Hermes Lodge Grand Master, Los Angeles, CA in 1988.

She is survived by three daughters; Patricia Holmes and her husband Alan, of St. Michaels, Jeannine Young of Easton, and Joneta Barr of Martinsburg, WVA. Two sisters; Anita Welch of Springtown, Tx. and Mosene Conley of Port Charlotte Fl. 11 grandchildren and numerous great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was pre deceased by a son Ronald Todd and six brothers.

A memorial service will be held on Monday March 12, 2001 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, St. Michaels at 11:00AM. Burial will be private.

March 2, 2001

Mildred Valliant, a lifetime resident of Centreville, MD died on Friday, March 2, 2001 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home, Centreville, MD She was 99.

Bborn on June 9, 1901 in church Hill, MD, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Stephens and Nellie Hall Valliant. She was a graduate of Hannah More Academy in Reisterstown, MD. She briefly taught school in Annapolis, MD. She attended Peabody Conservatory where she studied piano. Residing on the Corsica River for 65 years she enjoyed raising her dogs and enjoying life.

She is survived by a brother, James W. Valliant of Centreville and a sister, Ann V. Carvel of Laurel, DE. She was pre-deceased by a brother, E. S. Valliant, Jr. and John Valliant during WWII; two sisters, Mary V. Crowther and Margaret V. Foreman.

Memorial services will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Centreville on Saturday, March 10, 2001 at 2:00 PM.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Centreville, MD 21617.

March 1, 2001

Pauline Mabel Ellen Cole of Easton died on Thursday, March 1, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 68.

Born in Easton on June 20, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Ralph "Kelly" Palmer and Bertha Patrick Green. After attending public school in Easton, she began a lifelong career as a homemaker and caregiver for children. Her interests included flower gardening, cooking, decorating, and spending time with family and friends. At one time, she was married to Robert J. Cole, Sr. for over 20 years.

Mrs. Cole is survived by two sons, Robert J. Cole, Jr., and Bruce W. Cole, both of Easton; three sisters, Delores Green Holland of Denton, Katherine Gay Hopkins of Easton, and Louise Gay Worm of Preston; a grandson, Joseph Wayne Cole of Easton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6-8 PM. Burial will be in Springhill cemetery, Easton.

R. Kevin Horney of Centreville, MD died on Thursday, March 1, 2001 at the Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital, Chestertown, MD. He was 36.

Born March 10, 1964 in Easton, MD, he was the son of C. Grason and Ellen Hoxter Horney, Jr. of Centreville, MD. Since graduating from Queen Anne’s County High School in 1982 he has been employed with the Queen Anne’s County Roads Dept. for the past 17 years. He also was a partner with his father on the family farm “Willow Oak”. He enjoyed spending his free time with his loving family.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Horney is survived by two sisters, Christina Clough of Queen Anne and Amy Cowgill of Felton, DE; a niece and two nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at 2:00 PM where friends may call on Monday evening from 6- 8 PM. Burial will be in Stevensville cemetery, Stevensville, MD.

C. Leona Kelly of Newark, De., died Thursday, March 1, 2001 at the Sunbridge Nursing home in Elkton, Md. She was 77.

Mrs. Kelly was born November 6, 1923 in Goldsboro, Md. the daughter of the late M. Leon and Alice Ross (Elliot). Mrs. Kelly spent the majority of her life as a homemaker. She was a member of the Emanuel Baptist Church in Wilmington, De. And she enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by her husband Henry F. Kelly.

She is survived by her daughter Alice Hudson and husband Michael of Newark, De. And 3 grandchildren, Selena Hudson, Christine Hudson and Michael II Hudson all of Newark, De.

Funeral Services will be private to the family at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. Interment will be held at the Sudlersville cemetery in Sudlersville, Md. following the service.

Miriam E. Louden, of Easton, died at the William Hill Health Care Center, Easton, on Thursday, March 1, 2001. She was 92.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, January 31, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Thomas H. and Grace Fleming Fraser. After completing her education at Packer Institute in Brooklyn, she worked as a medical records librarian. In 1934, she married Ralph T. Walker, Sr. They were divorced in 1940 and Mr. Walker died in 1997.

In March of 1962, she moved from Amityville, Long Island, New York to Easton. Here, she was a member of the Talbot County Women's Club, the Talbot Co. Chapter of the AARP and the Jr. Auxiliary at Memorial Hospital where she was active with the Commission Shop for many years. She was also a former member of the Talbot Country Club. Her husband, John Franklin Louden whom she married in 1955, died in 1984. Mrs. Louden is survived by a son, Ralph T. Walker, Jr. and his wife, Catherine of Easton and two grandsons, Shane C. Walker and Brian Berthiaume.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A., Easton. Burial will be at the Oxford cemetery, Oxford, MD. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 6th, from 7 - 9 P.M. and one hour prior to service.

Lula Mae Morris Massey of Church Hill, MD died on Thursday, March 1, 2001 at her home. She was 80.

She was born on September 17, 1920, the daughter of the late Clark and Anna Morris. She graduated from Church Hill High School in 1938 and on November 24, 1945 she married Leon Massey. Mrs. Massey was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church, Price, MD, the Price Homemakers Club and the Price Community Club. In addition to being a loving housewife, mother, and grandmother, she was employed as cafeteria staff and school bus contractor by the Queen Anne’s County Board of Education. She also owned standard bred race horses with her husband.

Mrs. Massey is survived by her husband of 56 years, Leon Massey; a son, Morris (Butch) Massey of Worton; a daughter, Sally Coursey and son-in-law Butch Coursey of Church Hill; a sister, Betty Morris Kanouse of Dover, DE ; six grandchildren, Wendy Massey Riley, Tammie Massey Elms, Jason Ernest Massey Stubbs, Justin Edgar Stubbs, Courtney Lynn Massey and Brittney Michelle Massey; four great-grandchildren, Amanda Stoltz, Ashley Stoltz, Jean Ann Riley and Taylor Elms. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Isabell Kimbles and Virginia Kimbles.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 5, 2001 at 11:00 AM at the Bethany United Methodist Church, Price, MD. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville on Sunday, March 4, 2001 from 4 ­ 6 PM. Burial will be at the Church Hill cemetery, Church Hill, MD.

Charles Olden Parks, of Easton, a retired farmer, died at his home in Easton on Thursday, March 1, 2001. He was 92.

Born in Starr, MD, February 15, 1909, he was the son of the late William Brunner and Sarah Emily Ireland Parks. He grew up on a small farm near Denton and then in the early 1930's, moved to Easton where he managed Riley's Restaurant on Washington and Dover Sts. He then owned and operated a grocery store on Hanson Street until 1951 when he moved his family to a 600-acre farm on Dutchman's Lane near Easton. The farm was principally a dairy farm with more than a 100 cows. Following the sale of the farm in the early 1970's, he moved to a waterfront property between Easton and St. Michaels. He continued to work for the next 25 years in the framing department of Lu-Ev's in Easton.

A member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Easton, he was also a member of the Easton Elks Lodge #1622, B.P.O. Elks and the Maryland Farm Bureau. Mr. Parks took up golf later in life and once had the distinction of shooting his age, registering a score in the low 80's. He was also an avid baseball fan who enjoyed rooting for the Baltimore Orioles and for a fellow Eastern Shoreman, Harold Baines. His first wife, the former Louise Parrott Parks, died in 1945.

Mr. Parks is survived by his wife, Minnie Esther Blann Parks, whom he married in 1946; five children, C. Ellis Parks and Keith Parks, both of Easton, Ellen Lane of Millington, Nancy Webster of Cary, N.C. and Stephen Parks of Long Island, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2001, at 2 P.M. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Easton. Burial will be in the Oxford cemetery, Oxford, MD. Memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

Wyble, Eugene

December 1, 2003

Eugene Haire Wyble of Worton, MD died on Monday, December 1, 2003 at the Chester River Hospital Center. He was 90.

Born on May 16, 1913 in Easton, PA, he was the son of the late Hugh and Anna Carroll Haire. Mr. Wyble was a work oriented man interested in many things. He began as a farmer in Worton, MD, then took an interest in freelance photography. During World War II he served as a Tech. writer for the U.S. Government working on top secret projects. As an experienced photographer and writer he was a published novelist. He also taught adult education courses in Philadelphia. In 1953 he founded Wyble Advertising in Millville, NJ specializing in aviation accounts and was still consulting. He was very computer literate and loved reading.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Ruth Fithian Wyble on April 13, 1994. They were married on March 9, 1935 and he is survived by three children, Henry E. Wyble of Millville, NJ, Hugh H. Wyble of Chestertown, MD and Anna Ruth Moore of Worton, MD; six grandchildren, Kathleen Lusk, Henry E. Wyble, Jr., Michael Allen Moore, Jr., Lisa Hauser, Kenneth Lee Moore, Shannon L. Wyble and seven great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at the Wesley Chapel cemetery, Rock Hall, MD on Thursday, December 4, 2003 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 from 6pm until 8pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A. Chestertown, MD.

Interment will be held in Wesley Chapel cemetery, Rock Hall, MD.
