Mr. Joseph Philip Sheridan

Mr. Joseph Philip Sheridan, of Frederick, 93, former C&P; Telephone Co. executive, died of complications from a stroke Wednesday, April 1, 2009.

Mr. Sheridan was born in Joliet, Ill., in 1915. He was educated at St. Charles College in Baltimore and The Catholic University of America in Washington. His career with the Bell System began in 1940 when he was hired in Huntington, W.Va.

Throughout his 36-year career, he worked in West Virginia and the District of Columbia. He held the position of assistant vice president of personnel upon his retirement in 1976. He was a proud and active member of the volunteer organization, The Telephone Pioneers of America.

Mr. Sheridan retired to Richmond, Va., and was a 60-year summer resident of the Lewisetta, Va., area.

Mr. Sheridan was married to the former Jean Davis of Richmond, Va., for 69 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Thomas R. Sheridan of Boring, Ore., and Philip D. Sheridan of Charleston, W.Va.; three daughters, Jo Anne Hoyer of Charleston, W.Va., Mary Ellen McLaughlin of Columbia and Elizabeth S. Gantnier of Ijamsville; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held from 11 to noon Friday, April 3, at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, Va. Interment will immediately follow at Forest Lawn cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in his honor to the charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Louise Browning Hudgins

Mrs. Louise Browning Hudgins, born Oct. 18, 1910, in Kemptown., died at her home in Richmond, Va., Saturday, March 28, 2009. She was the daughter of Nannie and James Monroe Browning and sister of Algie, Bill, Evelyn, James, Hanford and Lynwood. Evelyn and Lynwood survive her. She is also survived by her daughter, Jean Hudgins of Frederick and her husband; two grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Her husband, Dr. Herbert E. Hudgins, preceded her in death in 1990, and was a minister in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. Services were held April 1, at Boulevard UM Church in Richmond. Pall- bearers were Rick Frederick (grandson), Browning Gentry (great-grandson), John Gentry (son-in-law), and nephews, Bill Browning, Charles Browning and Wayne Crum. Memorial gifts may be made to the church where she grew up: Providence UM Church, care of Julie Thompson, financial secretary, 3637 Kemptown Church Road, Monrovia, MD 21770.

Mr. John Jean John

John Jean John "Pop Pop," 87, of New Windsor, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at home with his family by his side. Born March 13, 1922, in Union Bridge, he was the son of the late George Bucher and Edna Geiman John. He was the husband of Ann Pitchford John, his wife of 32 years.

Jean graduated in 1939 from Elmer Wolfe High School. He was a dairy farmer for more than 30 years in the New Windsor and Union Bridge areas. He managed Farmers Fertilizer and Feed, which became Farm and Home Service in Sykesville for 18 years. Known as "Tex" by his students, he drove school bus #39 for Elmer Wolfe Elementary, New Windsor Middle and Francis Scott Key High schools.

Instructed by his late son, Douglas W. John, he became an avid licensed airplane pilot and enjoyed flying his Cessna 150 airplane. He enjoyed maintaining his airstrip and lawn, swimming at the YMCA and talking farming. He also enjoyed family gatherings and attending grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's activities and sporting events.

Jean was a life member of Farm Bureau. He served on the building committee of Francis Scott Key High School in 1957-58. He was the first PTA president when the school opened in 1959. He was a former member of New Windsor Lion's Club and New Windsor Volunteer Fire Company. He was a leader for Sulphur Springs 4-H Club and was a life member of the Carroll County Agriculture Center.

He served many years as a board member of Pipe Creek cemetery, retiring in 2007, and was a lifelong member of Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren, serving on numerous committees.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters, Teresa S. John of Taneytown, Judy M. John of Westminster; and daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Harry Owings of New Windsor; and son and daughter-in-law, John Jay and Sheila John of Fallston; daughter-in-law, Christine Devilbiss; grandchildren, Dawn L. Mills, Anita M. John, Michael B. Storey, Jeffrey A. Storey, Terri L. Gillis, David W. Storey, Ryan D. John, Amanda J. Bryson, Cheryl L. Rill, Brian C. Owings and Timothy H. Owings; 16 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Nancy Pitchford Cooney.

He was predeceased by son, Douglas W. John; sister, Madeleine Weller; and sister-in-law, Jane P. Nicholson.

A memorial service will be held at Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren, 26 Pipe Creek Road, Union Bridge at a later date. Interment will be private.

Mrs. Mildred Hunt

Mrs. Mildred Marie Loxly Contreras Hunt, 65, of Damascus, died suddenly on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at her residence. She was the wife of Mr. Steven Roger Hunt, her husband of 32 years.

Born Dec. 19, 1943, in Albuquerque, N.M., she was the daughter of the late Philiberto Gilbert Contreras and Mildred Dorcas Rush Sealing.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hunt is survived by three children, Jon Aaron Seeley, Melanie Larson and Eric Seeley; two stepchildren, Roger and Gina Hunt; 14 grandchildren; and two sisters, Suellen McGovern and Katie Figgers.

There will be no calling at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 9, at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 27015 Ridge Road, Damascus. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service beginning. Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital, Mid-Atlantic Regional Office, 4141 North Henderson Road, Suite 3, Arlington, VA 22203.

Mr. Harold Schaden VMD

Harold "Doc" Edward Schaden VMD, 94, of Frederick, passed away Monday, April 6, 2009, at Homewood at Crumland Farms.

He was the husband of the late Anna Lee Etchison, who passed away in 1997. Born on March 30, 1915, in Catasauqua, Pa., he was the son of the late George and Blanche (Fries) Schaden.

Dr. Schaden attended Muhlenberg College and later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1940. He was his class representative and continued to be active in the Alumni Association at the University of Pennsylvania.

After graduation, he worked at the Walker-Gordon Farm in New Jersey and traveled with Elsie the Borden Cow before coming to Frederick in 1942. Dr. Schaden retired from active practice in 1978. He was a delegate for the State of Maryland to the American Veterinary Medical Association and served as president of the Maryland State Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Schaden was a member of Frederick Community College's Board of Trustees as well as on the Frederick County Board of Education. He was a longtime member of Kiwanis and enjoyed his association with the Francis Scott Key Investment Club. Dr. Schaden was a member of the Frederick Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Schaden was the father of Dr. Michael Schaden, wife Sheila; Jenny McGinnis, husband Dave; and Sally Schwartz. He was the grandfather of eight, Kristy Long, Chad Schwartz, Terra Ireland and husband, Pete, Insley Schaden, Gavin Schaden, Matthew McGinnis, Megan McGinnis and Lindsey McGinnis. He was the great-grandfather of five. Additionally, he is also survived by his sister, Kathryn Schuh in Florida. He is preceded in death by his other sister, Evelyn Snyder from Bethesda.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dr. Schaden's name to the Harold and Anna Lee Schaden Memorial Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation of Frederick, 312 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Mrs. Dorothy Bittner

Mrs. Dorothy Ellen Bittner, 66, of Frederick, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009.

Born Dec. 31, 1942, in Morgantown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Donald and Daisy Bond.

Dorothy previously worked at Golden Curl and Rockshire Beauty. She also loved to read.

She is survived by three children, Karen Gibson and husband, Willie, of Taneytown, Carol Bane and husband, Jerry Sr., of Frederick, and Steven Bittner and girlfriend, Brandy, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Willie Jr., Barbara, Chasity, Ellen, Jerry Jr., Jessica, Tiffany and Kristina; eight great-grandchildren, Malik, Matthew, Dominic, Kyleigh, Damarian, Ella, Camerin and Caden; two brothers, James Bond and wife, Marlene, and Robert Bond; and one sister, Shirley Trimble and husband, Frank. She will also be remembered by her numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Bond and Donald Bond Jr.; and a sister, Donna Napoli.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 10, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ernie Whitmer officiating.

Interment will be in Pleasant View cemetery, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Charles Thompson Sr.

Mr. Charles Preston Thompson Sr., departed this life Sunday, April 5, 2009, at his home in North Potomac. He is survived by five children, Charles Jr. (Tammy) of Frederick, Carolyn Thompson of Gaithersburg, Betty (Lonnie) Evans of Frederick, Sherry Roach'e and Cherry Dent, both of Gaithersburg; five grandchildren, Eric and Kristen Thompson, Cory Evan, and Ryan and Travis Dent; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen (Clarence) Jackson of Brookeville, and Evelyn Jackson of Silver Spring. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Pearl Green, of Gaithersburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Fairhaven United Methodist Church, 12801 Darnestown Road, Gaithersburg. Interment will be in Pleasant View Historical Site. Arrangements are by Snowden Funeral Home.

Mrs. Betty Rogers

Mrs. Betty Olean Rogers died Saturday, April 4, 2009, in Vero Beach, Fla. Born Oct. 21, 1931, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of Ralph and Gladys Castle.

Her husband of 50 years, Charles Reese Rogers of Baltimore, died in February 2004.

Betty has two surviving children, Peter Rogers of Brookeville and Holly Beach of Vero Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Amy Goforth, Erica Gallagher, Rita Newby, Kenny Beach, and Christina Beach; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Barthel; and one half brother, Ralph Castle Jr.

She was preceded in death by sister, Marie Davis.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 27015 Ridge Road, Damascus. The family will receive friends and family before and immediately following the service.

Arrangements are by Seawinds Funeral Home, Vero Beach, Fla.

Mr. Andrew Paul Hummer

Mr. Andrew "Andy" Paul Hummer, 41, of Frederick, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 24, 1968, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Paul J. Hummer Jr. and the late Janice E. Hummer.

Andy was a graduate of Rock Creek School and during his school years he participated in local and state Special Olympics swimming, weight lifting and duckpin bowling. He rode horses for 30 years in therapeutic riding programs. He was also an avid putt-putt golfer. After graduating from Rock Creek School he worked at Scott Key Center and Lintini's Restaurant until his death.

In addition to his father, he is survived by two sisters, Sarah Hisim and husband, Nusret, of Frederick, and Anne Massie and husband, Curtis, of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Karl Hummer and wife, Angie, of Boonsboro; three nieces, Rachel Golub and husband, Patrick, of Goose Creek, S.C., and Caitlin and Hannah Hisim of Frederick; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 13, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday, April 14, at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 E. Church St., Frederick, with Pastor Emeritus W. Phillip Fogarty and Pastor Barbara Bornemann co-officiating.

Interment will be in Boonsboro cemetery, Boonsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Scott Key Center, 1050 Rocky Springs Road, Frederick, MD 21702, or Frederick County 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program, 11515 Angleberger Road, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Mr. Jeffrey Gilbert Higgins

Mr. Jeffrey Gilbert "Jeff" Higgins, 59, formerly of Brownsville, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at the Kline Hospice House, Mount Airy.

Born Nov. 18, 1949, in South Charleston, W.Va., he was the son of the late Dudley and Bonnie Jean Farber Higgins.

Mr. Higgins was of the Episcopal faith. He was a graduate of Boonton High School in Boonton N.J., Class of 1967, and also of the University of Maryland. He had been employed at McHenry Auto Parts of Frederick.

Surviving is a sister, Jean D. Hendrickson and husband, Hunt, of Frederick; two brothers, Gary R. Higgins and wife, Connie, of Gaithersburg, and James F. Higgins Sr. and wife, Susie, of Jefferson; nine nephews, Jason and Jeffrey Copland, Bryan, Kevin, Collin, Martin, Daniel, Charles Higgins and James Higgins Jr.; and two nieces, Meghan and Leanne Higgins. He will also be remembered by his former wife, Leslie Reid; and his close friend and neighbor, John Kraus.

Mr. Higgins is at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 N. Market St., Frederick. There will be no calling or visiting at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 108 W. Church St., Frederick, with the Rev. Thomas Momberg and the Rev. Kay Rice officiating.

Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mr. Higgins to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Janet Martin

Mrs. Janet Rose Haugh Martin, 83, of Thurmont, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 11, 2009, with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of the late James Norris Franklin Martin, who preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 2001; they enjoyed 54 years of marriage.

Born Jan. 16, 1926, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Annie Haugh. She attended Waynesboro Senior High School. Mrs. Martin was employed by the Waynesboro Knitting Mill; then later in 1951, she was employed by Moore's Business Forms as a shipping clerk, until her retirement in 1988.

She was a very active member of Harriet Chapel Episcopal Parish, where she served on the Vestry, Altar Guild, Episcopal Church Women, Outreach Committee, Prayer Team, Colorfest Committee and as a Sunday school teacher.

She also volunteered at Thurmont Senior Citizens Center and Thurmont Food Bank. She enjoyed being a member of the Roy Rogers Breakfast Club.

Janet was a member of the Thurmont Canaries, which brought to life her role as "Minnie Pearl." She performed for family, friends and church groups. She was an avid Redskins fan and New York Yankees fan. She loved singing and yodeling. Mostly she loved reading her Bible and raising her grandchildren.

Surviving are one granddaughter, Amy J. Kennedy and husband, Mark; one grandson, Buddy Martin and wife, Stefanie, all of Thurmont; five great-grandchildren, Megan Little and Alex Kennedy, Colin Martin, and Jake and Jerad White, all of Thurmont; two stepgrandchildren, Tammy Orndorff and Billy Coblentz; three sisters, Mabel Harbaugh and Louise Keller of Waynesboro, and Doris Armstrong and husband, Richard, of Chambersburg, Pa.; one brother, Gene Haugh of Waynesboro; brother-in-law, Paul Smith and friend, Betty Norris, of Waynesboro; and sisters-in-law, Dolly Sweeney of Thurmont and Betty Ann Moser and husband, George, of Rocky Ridge, and Virginia Haugh of Carlisle, Pa. She will be remembered by special friends Betty Anderson, Mary Fogle, Idella Anders and Judy Knott; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her son, James Martin Jr.; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Guy and Mary Martin; sisters, Anna Smith, Isabelle Simmers and Rudy Haugh; brothers, Ralph Haugh Jr., Melvin Haugh and Robert Haugh; and her aunt, Blanche Seilhamer.

The family of Mrs. Martin would like to thank Heartfields of Frederick, the staff of Frederick Memorial Hospital and Glade Valley Nursing and Convalescent Center for their warm and compassionate care. It was greatly appreciated.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont.

Mrs. Martin will lie in repose from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, at Harriet Chapel Episcopal Parish, 12625 Catoctin Furnace Road, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. with Rev. Sally Joyner-Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Bearers will be Buddy Martin, Mark Kennedy, Alex Kennedy, Randy Sweeney Sr., Randy Sweeney Jr., Frank Smith, Leroy Bolin, Steve Smith and Swanee Bridgett.

The family requests memorial donations be made in memory of Mrs. Martin to Harriet Chapel Episcopal Parish at the above address, or the Food Bank, c/o Thurmont Town Office, Thurmont Boulevard, Thurmont, MD 21788.
