Mrs. Sonya W. Matchett

Beloved mother Sonya W. (Swenson) Matchett, 79, of Zullinger, Pa., formerly of Chevy Chase, died at 12:17 a.m., Tuesday, April 7, 2009, in the emergency room of Chambersburg Hospital following a brief illness.

Born Dec. 2, 1929, in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Gustav V. and Constance (Thorstenson) Swenson.

Mrs. Matchett was a graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Maryland with the Class of 1948. She later studied at American University, Washington.

She and her husband, the late Mr. Eugene J. Matchett Jr., were married in 1948. He died in December 1969. Mrs. Matchett spent most of her life in the Washington area, later moving to Frederick, and then to Zullinger.

While living in the Washington area, Mrs. Matchett was employed by the federal government with the Department of Justice and also was employed as an executive secretary for a private law practice.

She was an active member of several country clubs in the Washington area.

Mrs. Matchett was an avid pianist who enjoyed classical music. She was also a voracious reader.

She will be dearly missed by her three children, Linda Jean Matchett of Hagerstown, Laura Melinda Matchett of Cascade and Thomas Christopher Matchett of Frederick.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela Ann Matchett, in 1975.

Services will be private at the convenience of her family.

Arrangements are by Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Pa.

Mr. Jeffrey Higgins

Mr. Jeffrey Gilbert "Jeff" Higgins, 59, formerly of Brownsville, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at the Kline Hospice House, Mount Airy.

Born Nov. 18, 1949, in South Charleston, W.Va., he was the son of the late Dudley and Bonnie Jean Farber Higgins.

Mr. Higgins was of the Episcopal faith. He was a graduate of Boonton High School in Boonton N.J., Class of 1967, and also of the University of Maryland. He had been employed at McHenry Auto Parts of Frederick.

Surviving is a sister, Joan D. Hendrickson and husband, Hunt, of Frederick; two brothers, Gary R. Higgins and wife, Connie, of Gaithersburg, and James F. Higgins Sr. and wife, Susie, of Jefferson; nine nephews, Jason and Jeffrey Copland, Bryan, Kevin, Collin, Martin, Daniel, Charles Higgins and James Higgins Jr.; and two nieces, Meghan and Leanne Higgins. He will also be remembered by his former wife, Leslie Reid; and his close friend and neighbor, John Kraus.

Mr. Higgins is at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 N. Market St., Frederick. There will be no calling or visiting at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 108 W. Church St., Frederick, with Rev. Thomas Momberg and the Rev. Kay Rice officiating.

Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mr. Higgins to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Ms. Jean Carper

Ms. Jean Lucille Carper, 81, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., passed away Monday, April 13, 2009, at home.

Born June 15, 1927, in Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late William Lee and Edna Louise Cummings Caniford.

She was of the Episcopal faith.

Ms. Carper worked as a financial analyst for Tracor Applied Sciences Inc. She was a member of the Charles Town, W.Va., Loyal Order Women of the Moose No. 1028; American Legion Post No. 71; VFW Post No. 3522; and Ranson Senior Center. She was the first female pin setter at the Brunswick Bowling Alley; an avid reader and enjoyed bingo and bowling.

She is survived by one son, Michael L. Wetzel of Columbia, S.C.; three daughters, Sharon L. Cogle of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Peggy A. Coates and husband, Junior, of Brunswick, and Jojean "Jay" Poma and husband, Willy, of Charles Town, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Shari Lopez, Billy Cogle, Tandrea Coates, Ashley Poma, Trey Coates and Zachary Poma; six great-grandchildren, Justin, Julia and Jace Lopez, Warren, Samantha and Madison Cogle; one brother, James Caniford and wife, Janice, of Boca Raton, Fla.; close friend, Vicky Henry and friend and caregiver, Ardalia "Daley" Taylor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and William Caniford and sisters, Geraldine and Helen Caniford.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 16, at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Victor F. Lawson officiating. Interment will be in Park Heights cemetery, Brunswick. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at the funeral home.

In addition to flowers, the family requests donations be made to Jefferson County C.O.A. Senior Center, 103 W. Fifth Ave., Ranson, WV 25438 or a charity of one's choice.

Ms. Margaret Myers

Margaret Elizabeth Myers, 83, died Friday, March 27, 2009, peacefully in her sleep at home.

Born in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Edward I. Myers Sr. and Julia S. Roelkey Myers.

Survivors include her brother, Lew L. Myers of Woodsboro; nephews, Wilbur G. Myers of Union Bridge and Roelkey I. Myers of Frederick; and niece, Barbara Myers Flanagan of Phoenix, Ariz.; six great-nieces and great-nephews; nine great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was a member of DAR, Frederick Historical Society and a life member of the Great Frederick Fair.

She was a 1942 graduate of Frederick High School. Early in her career she worked at Potomac Edison.

Ms. Myers was well-known in the genealogy field and had several publications to her credit.

There will be a celebration of life from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Mount Olivet Chapel. A private interment is planned at Mount Olivet cemetery at a later date.

Donations can be made to the Historical Society of Frederick County.

Mrs. Marge Ahalt

Marge Ahalt, 76, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009, in Fairfax, Va. She was born in Frederick County, lived in Urbana until marriage, and then lived in Middletown most of her adult life. She moved to Leesburg in 1994 and remained there ever since.

She married the love of her life, Louis Ahalt (passed in 2002), in 1956, and enjoyed 46 1/2 wonderful years of blissful marriage with him.

Marge has three children, Louis (Ike) Ahalt and his wife, Kathleen Ahalt, of Myersville, Bim Ahalt and Debbie Currier of Leesburg, Va.; twin sister, Nancy Smarr and her husband, Clarence, of Palm Coast, Fla.; sister, Joanne LaCoste and her husband, Gregory, of Frederick; and brother, Austin Stup Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Stafford, Va. She also has three granddaughters who brought great joy to her life, Kaitlin and Rebecca Ahalt, and Margie Currier. She also leaves behind her dog, Maggie Rose.

Her immediate and extended family worshiped her and loves her more than words could describe. She was the heart and soul of the entire family. Marge was a surrogate mother and grandmother to many and some who were closest recently included Donna Somers, Ashley Marshall and Tara Sullivan. She was known as Mammy by all of her granddaughter's friends and made them feel loved, always welcome in her home, and showed the current generation of youth what it really meant to be a grandmother.

She was an amazing cook and there was no way possible of not eating when stepping into her home. Marge was a strong lover of the ocean, seashell hunting, birds, deer, driving, gardening, music, books and food. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a smile and laugh that could light up a room. She remained young at heart her entire life.

She was a true gem; love followed her anywhere she went. She never met a stranger, and could always lift the spirits of her family and friends with her compassion and warm love. She was a tough old bird who was able to overcome many hardships, always with a positive attitude. Marge was the most generous human being most will meet in a lifetime, never putting herself before anyone. She has taken all of our hearts and touched the lives of many. This devoted sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend will never be forgotten. Eternal Love.

Mr. Charles Henry Curfman

Mr. Charles Henry Curfman, 98, of New Windsor, died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Carroll Hospice Dove House, Westminster. Born May 22, 1910, in Frederick County, he was the son of the late Frederick Leroy and Fannie Mae Snyder Curfman. Twice married , his first wife was the late Reva Irene Hoffman Curfman, who died in 1974, and his second wife was the late Mildred Garber Curfman, who died in 2000.

Mr. Curfman was a member of Pipe Creek "Brick" United Methodist Church, now Brick Chapel of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, New Windsor. He was a lifelong dairy farmer in Frederick and Carroll counties and was a former member of the Carroll County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and helping with his church.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Lee and Thomas F. Tracey of New Windsor, and Bonnie Ann and Bobby J. Graham of Westminster; stepchildren, Patsy Garber Tracey of Keymar and Nelson and Susan Garber of Towson; grandchildren, Ronald J. and Joyce Tracey of Fairfield, Conn., Carol A. and Stephen Nevin of Finksburg, Karen M. and Stephen Libonate of Frederick, Lisa A. and Thomas Spangler of Gettysburg, Pa., and Amy L. and Timothy Cooke of Fairfield, Conn.; great-grandchildren, Ronald, Andrew, Thomas and Ben Tracey, Jennifer and Kathryn Nevin, Megan and Kyle Libonate, Haley and Heather Spangler, and Colleen and Jackson Cooke; and numerous nieces, nephews, stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Curfman was the last of his immediate family, being preceded in death by sisters, Beulah Black, Grace Moxley and Mildred Coe; and brothers, Lester, Claude and Paul Curfman; and also a stepdaughter, Marianna Garber Kreimer.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, with the Rev. Helen Armiger, his pastor, and the Rev. O. F. "Bud" Kibbe, former pastor of Brick Church, officiating. Interment will be in Linganore cemetery, Unionville. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 13, at the funeral home.

Mr. Donald Jewell

Mr. Donald A. Jewell, 76, of Jefferson, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Frances Jewell, his wife of 33 years.

Born May 19, 1932 in Loudoun County, Va., he was the son of the late Raymond and Ruth Jewell. After high school, Mr. Jewell served in the U.S. Army. He drove tractor-trailers for many years, retiring in 1999.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jennifer James and Janice Nutter and husband, Steve; a son, Scott Jewell and wife, Tracey; a stepson, Randy Stockman and wife, Kathi; a stepdaughter, Rhonda Trail and husband, Melvin; four sisters, Macy Santmyer and husband, Paul, Thelma Johnson and husband, Clarence, Helen Fry and husband, Tommy, and Marguerite Santmyer and husband, James; a brother, Raymond Jewell and wife, Gail; six grandchildren, Michael and Matthew James, and Daniel, Adam, and Ashley Nutter, and Victoria Jewell; three step-grandchildren, Natalie and Byron Stockman, and Meghan Trail; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N., Frederick, where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 2. Rev. Guy Wenck will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jefferson United Church of Christ, 3837 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, MD 21755.

Mr. Nicholas C. Paleologos

Mr. Nicholas C. Paleologos (also known as Nicholas or Nickie Nichols during the first 18 years of his life) died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at his home following an extended fight against cancer. His home was in The Landings, Savannah, Ga.

He was born Aug. 2, 1938, in Charles Town, W.Va., the son of the late Christos and Stella Paleologos, both born in Mytelini, Greece.

He grew up in Charles Town, moving as a youngster to Frederick, where he graduated from Frederick High School, and then from the University of Maryland with an electrical engineering degree and as captain of the varsity swimming team. Following school, he joined the Navy where he served for 20 years, mostly at sea and in the Pacific. His last tour was as commanding officer of a destroyer stationed out of Pearl Harbor.

Following the Navy, Nick and his family remained in Hawaii for one and one-half years before moving to Atlanta, Ga. There he had a second career in the nuclear electric generation industry at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, traveling the U.S. and worldwide.

He worked on loan at nuclear power plants for Texas Utilities and Niagara Mohawk, helping to manage their operations. He retired and bought his Savannah home the last day of the last century, as he told those who asked. Likewise, he often wondered during a conversation, how in the world there was ever time to work. Among many other activities, he loved to travel and was active in tennis and later in golf.

Surviving are his children, sons, Timon Paleologos and his wife, Tracy, and Calen and Kyle of Auburn, Ala.; and daughter, Melinda Matulich and her husband, Bret, and son, Jadyn of Aromos, Calif.; and sister, Maria Manolatos and her husband, Dean, of Brookeville.

A memorial service will be private for the family with the body cremated and the ashes spread to the sea.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of a contribution to the Anne and Bill Toddie Oncology Research Fund, St. Joseph's-Candler Foundations, 5353 Reynolds St., Savannah, GA 31405.

Mrs. Mary Dorothy Ostmann Townsend

Mary Dorothy Ostmann Townsend, 80, of Frederick, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Born on Feb. 14, 1929, in Washington, she was the daughter of the late Bernard Ostmann and Irene Buckley Ostmann O'Connor.

Mrs. Townsend had an extensive career as a runway fashion model in Washington and New York. In 1948, she became the first weather girl on television in Washington as well as Miss Dr Pepper. She continued modeling in Washington and was the director of the Wendy Ward Charm School in Maryland. Her career led her to become the fashion coordinator of Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase. She was a Vidal Sassoon model and was in the newspapers quite often.

She was the beloved wife of Richard Allen Townsend; and the loving mother to children, Richard Joseph Pelicano Jr. and Deborah Ann Palmisano; and stepchildren, Richard George Townsend, Robert Henry Townsend, and Suzanne Christine Clarey. Mrs. Townsend was the devoted grandmother of granddaughter, Erin Christina Pelicano Cauble; and great-grandchildren, Liam Dominic Cauble and Bennett Pelicano Cauble. Mary was preceded in death by a grandson, Dominic Pelicano. In addition, she is survived by a sister, Eleanor Ostmann Barton; and brothers, James Buckley Ostmann and Bernard George Ostmann Jr.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at Chapel of Gate of Heaven cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring. Father Peter J. Sweeney will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Dominic Pelicano Memorial Scholarship Fund, 2486 Five Shillings Road, Frederick, MD 21701.

Mr. Joseph Philip Sheridan

Joseph Philip Sheridan, of Frederick, 93, former C&P; Telephone Co. executive, died of complications from a stroke on April 1, 2009.

Mr. Sheridan was born in Joliet, Ill., in 1915. He was educated at St. Charles College in Baltimore and The Catholic University of America in Washington. His career with the Bell System began in 1940 when he was hired in Huntington, W.Va.

Throughout his 36-year career, he worked in West Virginia and the District of Columbia. He held the position of assistant vice president of personnel upon his retirement in 1976. He was a proud and active member of the volunteer organization, The Telephone Pioneers of America.

Mr. Sheridan retired to Richmond, Va., and was a 60-year summer resident of the Lewisetta, Va., area.

Mr. Sheridan was married to the former Jean Davis of Richmond, Va., for 69 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Thomas R. Sheridan of Boring, Ore., and Philip D. Sheridan of Charleston, W.Va.; three daughters, Jo Anne Hoyer of Charleston, W.Va., Mary Ellen McLaughlin of Columbia and Elizabeth S. Gantnier of Ijamsville; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held from 11 to noon Friday, April 3, at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, Va. Interment will immediately follow at Forest Lawn cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in his honor to the charity of one's choice.
