Mrs. Lugenia Smith

Lugenia Harp Horine Smith, 93, of Frederick, passed away Friday, April 3, 2009, at Heartfields of Frederick. Mrs. Smith was the wife of Galen Clark Smith, who died in 1985.

Born on the family farm in Myersville on Feb. 1, 1916, she was the daughter of Lugenia Mae Harp Horine and John Henry Horine. She graduated from Middletown High School, Class of 1933, and was a faithful member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Myersville, where she served as piano accompanist to the Sunday school for many years. She worked as a beautician in Frederick and in Blackstone, Va., until she moved back to Braddock Heights after World War II with her husband to raise her family. She moved to Frederick in 1952, and later resided at the Brooklawn Apartments for more than 20 years.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Frances (Mrs. Alvin) Rice and Katherine (Mrs. Arthur) Rice.

She is survived by her son, Galen Johannes Smith of Baltimore; her daughter, Julia Frances Carlson and son-in-law, Donald G. Carlson, of Derwood; grandsons, Eric Clark Carlson of Houston, Texas, and Scott Randall Carlson of Bethesda; and several nieces, their children and grandchildren. The family expresses its appreciation to the staff of Heartfields for their five years of loving care. At the end of her life, she had a warm and loving relationship with her primary caregiver, Wanda Phillips, who will be remembered with gratitude.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday April 8, at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Myers-ville. The Rev. Mary Worrel will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Interment will follow in Mount Zion cemetery. Pallbearers will be Galen Smith, Don Carlson, Eric Carlson, Scott Carlson, John Horine and George Virts.

Arrangements are by Ricketts Funeral Home, Myers-ville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Mount Zion United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 266, Myersville, MD 21773.

Mrs. Elizabeth Foster

Elizabeth (Betty) Ridgway Foster, of Manchester, passed away at Carroll Hospice Dove House on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at the age of 74. She was the loving wife of Earl D. Foster for 36 years before he predeceased her in 1990.

Betty was born April 15, 1934, in the farmhouse in which she was raised, in Belle Vernon, Pa., to Jack Winfred Ridgway and Rose Caroline Bautz Ridgway. She was predeceased by her two siblings, John Ridgway of Belle Vernon, Pa., and Ruth "Joy" Glascock of Colorado Springs, Colo. After graduating high school, she and her sister came to Washington, where she found employment and her husband working for the government. Betty and Earl married in 1954, and in 1959, settled down in Rockville until the 1990s.

Betty took several years off from work to raise her two sons, but soon returned to work as an attendance secretary, guidance secretary and principal's secretary at E. Brook Lee Jr. High School and Brookhaven Elementary School in Montgomery County. After retiring, she lived several years in Monrovia, where she was a member of Providence United Methodist Church. She eventually settled in Manchester.

She was an avid reader of mysteries, could do crossword puzzles like no one else, loved to cook for her family and was famous for her homemade candy, chocolate and lasagna, all made from scratch. She loved to spend time with her family telling stories, playing cards or reminiscing about her childhood.

Betty is survived by her two sons, Jay Foster and his wife, Terri, of Frederick, and Jon Foster and his wife, Edie, of Westminster. She is also survived by one very special niece, Susan Vervaeke and her husband, Tom, of Colorado Springs; and a family friend she thought of as a stepson, Tom Jackson and his wife, Joy, of Laytonsville. She enjoyed reading and playing with the sunshine of her life, her grandson, Robbie; as well as telling stories to her two stepgrandchildren, Heather Krumpe and Nick Mowel; and her one step-great-grandchild, Gavin Krumpe. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, and a loving mother and grandmother.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 6.

Interment will take place immediately following the services at Gate of Heaven cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dove House of Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.

Mr. Charles Hallford

Mr. Charles William "Bill" Hallford, 66, of Hanover, Pa., died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the University Specialty Hospital, Baltimore.

Born April 16, 1942, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Grady and Julia Dixon Hallford. He was the husband of Doris Buffington Hallford, his wife of 25 years.

Mr. Hallford was a member of the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1963 on the U.S.S. Edson. He was formerly employed with the state of Maryland, then on the project of the Savannah River Bridge and was later a car salesman with Champion Chevrolet of Hanover. He was a fan of NASCAR racing and enjoyed vintage automobiles, camping and building street rods.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jessica Wisner and husband, Wesley, of Olney, and Christine Owen and husband, Joel, of Ijamsville; stepdaughter, Bonnie Kauffman of Westminster; stepson, John Kauffman and wife, Deb, of Etters, Pa.; three grandchildren, Ashlea Tievy, Kira and Ian Wisner; four stepgrandchildren, Eric and Craig Kauffman, Allyson Dingle and Kathleen Shatzer; aunt, Willene Durham, and uncle, Addison Hallford, both of Crawfordville, Ga. He was predeceased by two brothers, James and Grady Hallford.

A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, 124 S. Main St., with Rev. James Benedict, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Pipe Creek cemetery, near Linwood.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, P.O. Box 518, Union Bridge, MD 21791.

Arrangements are by Hartzler Funeral Home, Union Bridge.

Mrs. Leonora Worley Rocca

Mrs. Leonora Worley Rocca, 100, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 21, 2009, at her Florida residence. She was the loving wife, for 57 years, of Leo J. Rocca, who predeceased her in 1987.

Born Sept. 30, 1908, in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late Harry F. and Bess Emmert Worley.

Mrs. Rocca was educated in the U.S., Liberia, Switzerland and Germany as the family followed her father on his diplomatic assignments. She graduated from Gunston Hall School in Washington, D.C. and attended the University of Michigan.

Prior to her marriage, she managed the interior decorating department of the Hecht Company. A convert to Catholicism, she was active in the Church, and generously supported many educational and philanthropic causes. She was a member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution and a former board member of the South Florida Fair. She was proud of her membership in the Women's Guild of St. Rita's Church, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

A person of great faith and strong convictions, she loved her family and was revered and respected by all who knew her. She will be especially missed by lifelong friends, Anna M. Stuart and Jean Keogh Reed.

Mrs. Rocca was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her children, Leo Rocca Jr. and wife, Christine, and Leonora R. Bernheisel; seven grandchildren, William Rocca and wife, Sarah, Hilary Rocca and husband, Guadalupe, Stephanie Wilbur and husband, Hector, Elizibeth B. West and husband, David, Catherine B. Barkley and husband, Skip, Paul Bernheisel and Mark Bernheisel; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Kyle Worley.

There will be no calling or visiting at the funeral home.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Monday, April 13, at St. Rita's Church, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. Rev. Fr. Robert Malagesi, MSSCC will serve as the celebrant.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mrs. Rocca to Mt. St. Mary's Seminary, Emmitsburg or to the Daughter's of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C.

Arrangements are by Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., Frederick.

Mr. James Marion Fox

Mr. James Marion "Jiggs" Fox, 65, of Thurmont, died suddenly Friday, April 10, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Ann Marie Plumer Fox, whom he married July 24, 1965.

Born Nov. 19, 1943, in Sabillasville, he was a son of the late Glen E. and Mary Brown Fox.

Mr. Fox graduated from Thurmont High School, Class of 1961. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, where he received the Bronze Star. He had been employed with Eastalco for 29 years, Lowe's of Frederick and SAIC of Frederick at the National Cancer Institute. He was a member of the Edwin Creeger Post 168, American Legion and the AMVETS Post 7, both of Thurmont. He was a devoted father and he always put his children first. Mr. Fox was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. He will be dearly missed by his "Grey Kitty."

Surviving besides his wife of 43 years are two children, Daniel James Fox and friend, Bethany Brown, of Frederick, and Kimberly Ann Fox and friend, Greg Andrew, of Thurmont; two sisters, Alice Flaughter of Thurmont and Judy Harbaugh and husband, Robert, of Fairfield, Pa.; and three brothers, Charles Fox of W.Va., Thomas Fox and wife, Connie, of Thurmont and Maurice Fox and wife, Helga, of Sabillasville. He was loved by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Melvin Fox.

Mr. Fox is at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 13.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Brown's cemetery, Foxville. Bearers will be Brian Fox, Kevin Fox, Chris Stambaugh, and James McCauley, all nephews, and Jesse Ketterman and David Lawyer, both friends.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mr. Fox to the Thurmont Ambulance Co., 27 N. Church St., Thurmont, MD 21788.

Mrs. Louise Jacobs

Mrs. Louise G. (Keyser) Jacobs, 98, of Frederick, died Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, Frederick. She was the wife of the late George Melvin Jacobs, who died Aug. 9, 1961.

Born Nov. 4, 1910, in Bethel, Frederick County, she was a daughter of the late William F. and Adella E. Stull Keyser.

Mrs. Jacobs was formerly a member of Faith United Church of Christ, Charlesville, and for many years has been a member of the First Baptist Church, Frederick, where she was active in the Rebekah Sunday School Class, the Fun Bunch, and for many years was a devoted volunteer and chaired the Kitchen Angels of the church. She was also a former member of the Patriotic Club and F.S.K. Post 11, American Legion Auxiliary, of Frederick.

She is survived by one son, Robert W. Jacobs and wife, Sandy, of Frederick; one daughter-in-law, Ruthellen Jacobs, of Frederick; three grandchildren, Ronnie P. Jacobs and fianc?e, Donna Heffner, Stephen W. Jacobs and wife, Janet, and R. Eric Jacobs and wife, Teresa; five great-grandchildren, Cameron, Andrew, Chase, Colin and Lucas; and many nieces and nephews.

She is also remembered by the residents and staff of Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, where she has spent the last few years and who the family wishes to thank with gratitude for their compassion and care to her and her family.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Phillip Jacobs Sr.; grandson, Richard P. Jacobs Jr.; three brothers, Oscar W. Keyser, Braden C. Keyser, Walter R. Keyser; seven sisters, Ava Irene Kesyer Martz, Mary Rueyann Keyser Clem, Bessie Viola Keyser Stull, Nora Elizabeth Keyser, Grace Celestise Keyser Clem, Blanche Margaret Keyser Klipp, and Ollie May Keyser Burdette.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 17, from the funeral home, with Rev. Burnis D. Barrett, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the First Baptist Church, Building Fund, 7040 Bowers Road, Frederick, MD 21702 or to Faith United Church of Christ, 9333 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Janet Martin

Mrs. Janet Rose Haugh Martin, 83, of Thurmont, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 11, 2009, with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of the late James Norris Franklin Martin, who preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 2001; they enjoyed 54 years of marriage.

Born Jan. 16, 1926, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Annie Haugh. She attended Waynesboro Senior High School. Mrs. Martin was employed by the Waynesboro Knitting Mill; then later in 1951, she was employed by Moore's Business Forms as a shipping clerk, until her retirement in 1988.

She was a very active member of Harriet Chapel Episcopal Parish, where she served on the Vestry, Altar Guild, Episcopal Church Women, Outreach Committee, Prayer Team, Colorfest Committee and as a Sunday school teacher.

She also volunteered at Thurmont Senior Citizens Center and Thurmont Food Bank. She enjoyed being a member of the Roy Rogers Breakfast Club.

Janet was a member of the Thurmont Canaries, which brought to life her role as "Minnie Pearl." She performed for family, friends and church groups. She was an avid Redskins fan and New York Yankees fan. She loved singing and yodeling. Mostly she loved reading her Bible and raising her grandchildren.

Surviving are one granddaughter, Amy J. Kennedy and husband, Mark; one grandson, Buddy Martin and wife, Stefanie, all of Thurmont; five great-grandchildren, Megan Little and Alex Kennedy, Colin Martin, and Jake and Jerad White, all of Thurmont; two stepgrandchildren, Tammy Orndorff and Billy Coblentz; three sisters, Mabel Harbaugh and Louise Keller of Waynesboro, and Doris Armstrong and husband, Richard, of Chambersburg, Pa.; one brother, Gene Haugh of Waynesboro; brother-in-law Paul Smith and friend, Betty Norris, of Waynesboro; and sisters-in-law Dolly Sweeney of Thurmont and Betty Ann Moser and husband, George, of Rocky Ridge, and Virginia Haugh of Carlisle, Pa. She will be remembered by special friends Betty Anderson, Mary Fogle, Idella Anders and Judy Knott; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her son, James Martin Jr.; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Guy and Mary Martin; sisters, Anna Smith, Isabelle Simmers and Rudy Haugh; brothers, Ralph Haugh Jr., Melvin Haugh and Robert Haugh; and her aunt, Blanche Seilhamer.

The family of Mrs. Martin would like to thank Heartfields of Frederick, the staff of Frederick Memorial Hospital and Glade Valley Nursing and Convalescent Center for their warm and compassionate care. It was greatly appreciated.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont.

Mrs. Martin will lie in repose from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, at Harriet Chapel Episcopal Parish, 12625 Catoctin Furnace Road, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Sally Joyner-Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Bearers will be Buddy Martin, Mark Kennedy, Alex Kennedy, Randy Sweeney Sr., Randy Sweeney Jr., Frank Smith, Leroy Bolin, Steve Smith and Swanee Bridgett.

The family requests memorial donations be made in memory of Mrs. Martin to Harriet Chapel Episcopal Parish at the above address, or the Food Bank, c/o Thurmont Town Office, Thurmont Boulevard, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Mr. Richard Creel

Mr. Richard Alan Creel, 51, of Seneca Heights, Gaithersburg, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at his home.

Born in Washington, D.C., on May 21, 1957, he was a son of the late Robert S. and Thelma E. (Conner) Creel. He is survived by brother, Robert S. Creel and wife, Diane L., of Frederick; sister, Patricia Neeland and husband, Tom, of Kissimmee, Fla.; brother, Michael Creel; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Steven Creel.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Rev. Michael J. Ruane will officiate. Inurnment will be private and held in Fort Lincoln cemetery, Brentwood.

Family will receive friends one half hour prior to services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Scharcot-Marie-Tooth Association, 2700 Chestnut Pkwy., Chester, PA 19013.

Mr. Denver Potts

Mr. Denver Lee Potts, 86, of Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, at home surrounded by his family, after a brief illness.

Born June 17, 1922, in Legore, he was the son of the late Howard Edward and Mary Anders Potts. He was the husband of Ethel M. Potts, who predeceased him on Dec. 3, 2008.

Mr. Potts served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was formerly employed with J.M. Bucheimer Leather Co., Frederick, and retired from the City of Frederick in 1985. Following retirement, he worked part time at Mealey's Restaurant, New Market. He was a member of Oak Hill Church of God, Legore.

Mr. Potts enjoyed hunting, fishing, doing crossword puzzles, playing 500 rummy, working on lawn mowers and attending public sales.

Surviving are a daughter, Malinda Mae Shook and son, Paul D. Powell and wife, Sheryl, all of Mount Pleasant; grandchildren, Cathy Lynn Boyd of Taneytown and Donald P. Shook Jr. of Mount Pleasant; great-granddaughter, Angela Mae Geisler of Arizona; two brothers, Garfield "Buddy" Potts and wife, Betty, of Walkersville, and Lamar "Mus" Potts and wife, Sally, of Woodsboro; three nieces; and two nephews. He will be remembered by a special friend, Bobby Boyer of Mount Pleasant.

He was predeceased by sisters, Mary Potts and Doris Fogle; and brothers, infants Garland and Wilbur Potts, and Charles Potts.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, with the Rev. Fred Horner, retired pastor of Wakefield Valley Bible Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 17, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
