Mr. Henry Sizemore Jr.

Mr. Henry Harrison "Harry" Sizemore Jr., 85, of Frederick, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Northampton Manor, with his family at his bedside.

He was the beloved husband of Mable Marie Ballenger Sizemore; devoted father of Estel Sizemore and wife, Marie, of Culpeper, Va., Linda Odham and husband, William, of Clemens, N.C., Beverly Jordan and husband, Raymond, of Frederick, Gene Ahalt and partner, Gary Gise, of Boyds, and Kevin Ahalt and Sherrie Colliar of Frederick; dear brother of Billie Pozzie of Elyria, Ohio, Connie Gaye Johnston of Kegley, W.Va., and of the late Opal Hamilton, Garnett Hutchinson, Glen Sizemore and Bernice Evans; cherished grandfather of nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and dear son-in-law of Mable M. Ballenger of Boyds.

Relatives and friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday, April 20, at the Open Door Metropolitan Community Church, 15817 Barnesville Road, Boyds, MD 20841, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Interment immediately following at Boyds Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Harry's name may be made to the Open Door Metropolitan Community Church.

Ms. Amy Garnette Merricks

Amy Garnette Merricks, 32, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in an auto accident. She was born in 1977 in Reading, Pa., and moved to Maryland in 1978. Throughout her school career, she pursued her love of science and art. She worked throughout her high school and college years at Agrisearch Research Laboratories, the family business. Amy graduated from Linganore High School with honors in 1995, and graduated from UMBC in 2000, with double majors in biochemistry and ancient studies. She interned at the Smithsonian Institution in the analysis of ancient artifacts, and was studying for her Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University in geology and crystallography. Having won several art awards, Amy continued with drawing, painting and silversmithing. She believed in the betterment of man through science. Amy had a love of animals and adored her cat, Bailey.

She was the beloved daughter of Donna and Dr. Larry Merricks of Detour. Also surviving are her sister, Lisa and husband, Rhett Leisinger, of Hagerstown; nieces, Janet Leisinger and Nicole Reed of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandmother, Ruth Holscher of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; uncle, Bill Holscher of Naperville, Ill., and his children, William and Kendall; and friends Ed and Cathy Scott of New Market. We miss you, dear Amy, and love you forever. No public service is planned.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Thurmont.

Mr. Welford Dale Hudson

Mr. Welford Dale Hudson, 89, of Lewistown, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 10, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Sylvia Hudson, his wife of 60 years. He was known to many as "Schick," short for the name Schickaba, given to him by his grandson Chris when he was a small child.

Born Sept. 19, 1919, in Brookville, Ind., he was the son of the late Beatrice Hudson and Henry E. Hudson; and brother of the late Stanley Hudson, all of Indiana.

Mr. Hudson served in the U.S. Army as a medical aidman in World War II in the New Guinea Campaign. His decorations included the Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon with Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal. He also received a Citation of Papuan Forces on May 6, 1943.

He was also a member of Lewistown United Methodist Church.

Dale had a passion for "building" and worked as a construction superintendent for several years at Glenn Construction, as well as other local companies, receiving several awards for his work in construction.

For 10 years, he was the captain of the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid Redskins, Wizards, NASCAR and wrestling fan and enjoyed watching these with his grandson, Chris. He loved to fish and hunt with his son, Donald. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. He will be remembered as a fun loving, hard working, strong man with a zest for life.

Surviving are a brother, Harry Hudson of Indiana; son, Donald Hudson and wife, Judy; daughter, Jeanne Graves and husband, Steve; grandchildren, Bonnie Hudson, Heather Graves (and Samuel Charles), Christopher Graves, Kelly Reed (and Howard Weiss), Eddie Reed (and Tara), Tracey Reed and wife, Kim; great-grandchildren, Dereck Myers, Christy Reed, Blake Ashby, and Kyle Reed; nieces, Nancy Grigsby and Peggy Floyd; and great-nieces and nephews, Valerie Goodwin, Lisa Grigsby, Brian Patrick Hudson, and Mike Hudson. He will be remembered by many long-time and special friends.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Lewistown United Methodist Church, 11032 Hessong Bridge Road, Thurmont, MD 21788, with the Rev. Elza Hurst, officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Interment immediately following at Fort Lincoln cemetery.

The family requests memorial contributions be made in memory of Dale to Lewistown United Methodist Church at the above address.

Mrs. Polly Louise Atkinson

Mrs. Polly Louise Atkinson, 81, of Frederick, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Washington Hospital Center, with complications from advanced stages of lung cancer. She was the wife of the late Rollins J. Atkinson Jr., who died Nov. 10, 2004.

Born July 11, 1927, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Pikesville, she was the daughter of the late Arthur W. Heatherly Sr. and Hazel M. Heatherly. Mrs. Atkinson worked 43 years for Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. (now Verizon) in Frederick, and retired as an engineering drawing clerk in 1992. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, AARP Local 626, American Legion Auxiliary, Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Citizens Nursing Home Auxiliary.

She is survived by one son, Brian K. Atkinson and wife, Debbi; two grandsons, Phillip and Andrew Atkinson; and a number of nieces and nephews. In past years, she could be seen around Frederick with her little dog, Heidi. She is fondly remembered by her many friends in the morning at the Seventh Street McDonald's.

Mrs. Atkinson was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Heatherly Linton and Marguerite Heatherly Serfoss; and three brothers, David F. Heatherly, Lloyd D. Heatherly and Duke Heatherly.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. 15 N., Frederick. Inurnment will follow the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Frederick County Humane Society, 217 W. Patrick St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Mr. Lawrence Garrett Purdy Jr.,

Mr. Lawrence Garrett "Jack" Purdy Jr., 76, of Falling Waters, W.Va., died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Somerford House Assisted Living. He was the husband of Helen Virginia Purdy, his wife of 57 years.

Born Aug. 18, 1932, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Lawrence G. Sr. and Clara Stine Purdy.

Mr. Purdy worked as a machine set up operator for Mack Trucks for 29 years. He was a member of the NRA and National Muzzle Loaders Association. He enjoyed crafts, Indian folk crafts, Mountain Men Rendezvous, fishing and hunting.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Lance W. Purdy and wife, Colleen, of Hagerstown, and their children, Brandon and Deanna, Joan D. Sexton of Myersville and her children, Jennifer and Jaime, and Steven R. Purdy and wife, Debra, of Walkersville, and their children, Christopher and Justin; and one great-grandson, Devon Purdy.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

Interment will be private.

Mr. Leonard Holcomb Jr.

Leonard "Hawk" Holcomb Jr., 83, of Romney, W.Va., died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 14, 1925, in Mill Creek, Okla., the son of the late Leonard and Mabel (Moss) Holcomb Sr.

Mr. Holcomb retired as senior fuel and ash foreman from Potomac Edison Power Plant in Dickerson after 39 years of service.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a watertender 2C SV6 on the USS Frement. He was a member of the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101 and the American Legion Hampshire Post 91, Romney. Mr. Holcomb was a lifetime member of the Masons' Columbia Lodge 285 A.F. & A.M., Arlington, Va.

Mr. Holcomb is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen Esther (Burgess) Holcomb; one son, Michael Lee Holcomb of Frederick; four daughters, Jo Ann Brooks of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Judy Mae Holcomb-Chavez of Arlington, Va., Toby Rae Rhodes of Frederick and Carolyn L. Counsellor of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; two brothers, James Holcomb of Reno, Nev., and Edgar Holcomb of Avon, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Joy and Kenny Brooks, Tracy Moore, Curtis and Chad Fisk, Katie, Kristen, Nikki and Josh Holcomb; four great-grandchildren, Dakota Harrison, Chance Moore, Cierra and Chase Brooks; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney.

Mr. Holcomb will be taken to Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 21. A Masonic service will take place at that time.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville, with preacher Paul Rennick officiating.

Interment will be at Monocacy cemetery, Barnesville, with military graveside rites.

Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home Inc., Romney, W.Va., and Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville.

Mr. James Previti

Mr. James Previti, 82, of Mount Airy, passed away at his home Friday, April 17, 2009.

He was the beloved husband of Charlotte Elizabeth Martin Previti for 43 years. He always stated proudly that he had never removed his wedding band during that time.

He was born July 19, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of the late Samuel and Pauline Previti.

James served as a seaman first class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Prudence Lodge 190 A.F. & A.M. of Mount Airy, a member of Almas Temple Mini Motors, a life member of Naomi Chapter 3, Washington, 32 degree Scottish Rite, a member of Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department, a retired sheet metal worker and member of Local 100. He was also a member of Prospect United Methodist Church. He was a fan of and enjoyed watching the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens and doing crossword puzzles.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother, Louis Previti of Gettysburg, Pa.; daughters, Paula Snyder, Nancy Thurston and Carol Ridgeway; and sons, James, Philip and John Previti. There are also 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield, MD 21784, with the Rev. Vicki Curry officiating.

Interment will be in Fort Lincoln cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Johanna M. Stull

Mrs. Johanna M. Stull, 74, of Walkersville, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. She was the wife of 50 years to Delegate Paul S. Stull.

She was born in Buckeystown on Aug. 17, 1934, as the only child of the late Florence (Tressler) and Henry Adams Magaha. A graduate of Mount Airy High School and a 1956 home economics graduate of Hood College, Johanna also attended Western Maryland College and the University of Maryland.

Johanna started out her professional career as a 4-H extension agent in Garrett County. She went on to teach at both Liberty and Linganore high schools, and for 22 years she taught at the Church of the Brethren Learning Center.

A member of the Lewistown United Methodist Church, Johanna led a very active life. She had membership in the Frederick Civic Women's Club, the Glade Valley Grange, was a past president of the Frederick Homemakers, membership in the Glade Valley Homemakers, Rose Hill Garden Club, both the Frederick County Farm Bureau and Frederick County Farm Museum, member of the Walkersville Volunteeer Fire Department, the Monocacy Quilters, and a 4-H All Star. She was a great fan of NASCAR racing and was especially partial to Mark Martin.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Greg A. Stull and wife, Dr. Chellie Stull, of Frederick; her beloved cat, Applebee; and her granddog, Bryce. She will be missed by her good friends, Carroll and Judy Shry, Mary Ann and Edmund Mauzy, Janet and Joseph Wunderlich, Joyce Crawford, Pat Petre, Lois and Austin Schroyer, Susan Seale, Roger and Lois Wilson and Theresa Musselman.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 19, and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 20, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, with Pastor Elza Hurst officiating.

Burial will follow in Glade cemetery, Walkersville, with Carroll Shry, Michael Crawford, Edmund Mauzy, Roger Wilson, Joe Wunderlich and Marvin Bures serving as pallbearers.

Memorials in Johanna's name may be made to Lewistown UMC, 11032 Hessong Bridge Road, Thurmont, MD 21788 or to Clayton Lenhart Memorial Scholarship Fund, 312 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Infant William Whitehurst

William Cooper Whitehurst, after 4 months and 28 days, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009 in Brunswick. William was born Nov. 18, 2008, in Reston, Va.

He is survived by his mother, Susan Brantley Whitehurst Osborne of Brunswick; his father, W. David Hutting Jr. of Gainesville, Va.; two brothers, Daegan Alexander Osborne and Nathaniel Christian Osborne; twin sister, Emma-Lee Sage Whitehurst; maternal grandparents, James and Susan Whitehurst of Hillsboro; paternal grandparents, Dave and Mary Hutting of Chelsea, Mich.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle SE, Leesburg, Va. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, 37730 Saint Francis Court, Purcellville, Va., with Father Ronald S. Escalante officiating. Interment will follow in Hillsboro cemetery, Hillsboro, Va.

Mr. Robert Stansfield Jr.

Robert E. Stansfield Jr., of Sykesville and formerly of Frederick County, died Thursday, April 16, 2009.

A two-year resident of Fairhaven, Mr. Stansfield was the beloved husband of Ruth G. (Galley) Stansfield; father of Robert E. Stansfield III and his wife, Lek, of Waynesboro, Pa., Jo Anne Tucker and her husband, Richard, of Mount Airy, Nancy J. Doane of Waterford, Va., Betty S. Taylor and her husband, Michael, of Catonsville, and the late Donald N. Stansfield. Mr. Stansfield is also survived by a sister, Catherine Hart of Westminster, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Friends called Sunday, April 19, at Bethany United Methodist Church, 2875 Bethany Lane, Ellicott City, MD 21042. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, at the church.

Interment will be private.

Mr. Raymond Covey Sr.

Raymond Edward Covey Sr., 94, of Dublin, Va., died Sunday, April 19, 2009.

He was born June 11, 1914, in Botetourt County, Va., but grew up in Dublin, Va., and was the son of the late Elizabeth Sadler Covey and Jessie Raymond Covey.

Raymond was a dairy farmer for many years in the Johnsville Community of Frederick County, before he became an electrician for Hood College in Frederick. In his later years, he and his wife returned to Claytor Lake for their retirement.

He was a member of the Mount View United Methodist Church, and was a very active life-member of the Dublin Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones award. He was a former member and served as president several times with the Libertytown/Unionville Lions Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Osceola Covey; brothers, Herbert Sadler Covey, and Jesse R. Covey Jr.; and a daughter-in-law, Sharon O. Covey. He is survived by two sons, Raymond E. Covey Jr. of Hagerstown, and Leeman Harper Covey and his wife, Dr. Patsy Covey, both of Point Clear, Ala. and Flat Rock, N.C.; brothers, Earl S. Covey and his wife, Doris, of Dublin, and Jerry J. Covey of Dublin; sisters, Elisabeth Collins of Scottsboro, Ala., and Margaret Brewer of Roanoke. He is also survived by a grandson, Heath Covey and his wife, Michelle, of Virginia Beach; and a great-grandson, Spenser Covey, also of Virginia Beach.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Mount View United Methodist Church, Pulaski Co., Va. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at the church.

Flowers will be appreciated, but for those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Mount View United Methodist Church cemetery Fund in Raymond's memory: c/o Patsy Hill, 5020 State Park Road, Dublin, VA 24084.
