Mrs. Suzanne Mead

Suzanne Margaret Mead, of Woodbine, lost her battle with cancer on Tuesday, April 14, 2009. She was 67.

She is survived by her four children, Robert Mead and his wife, Joanne, and his daughter, Tiffany, of Woodbine; Tracy Miller and her husband, William, and their children, Ken and Laura, of Largo, Fla.; William Mead and his wife, Tammy, and their son, Garrett and his family, Edesa, and daughter, Taylor, of Libertytown; and Amy Weisner and her children, Jamie, Katie and Malissa, of Pasadena.

Suzanne was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert Mead, and their son, Michael Mead.

A native of Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Helen Schwatka. Suzanne attended Seton High School in Baltimore, was a career accountant and bookkeeper and recently retired from Mead Tree and Turf Care.

An avid animal lover, she enjoyed devoting time to her pets. She also was a skilled portrait photographer and a talented cook, home decorator and gardener.

All funeral arrangements are private.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 17, at the home of Robert Mead.

Mr. J. Frank Main Jr.

Mr. J. Frank Main Jr., 81, of Germantown, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Anna Lee Porterfield Main, who died in 1983, and the late Dianne Kaye Olmstead Main, who died in 2006.

He was born in Frederick on June 2, 1927, and was a son of the late Joseph Frank Main Sr. and Evelyn V. Ridenour Main.

In July 1944, he entered the Merchant Marine and served as a radio operator on several Liberty Ships in the North Atlantic. He proudly served his country during World War II. He then entered the U.S. Army in July 1946 and served until December 1947.

In the late '40s and early '50s, he and his father owned and operated a painting and wallpapering business. Then, in 1957, he joined the Frederick City Police Department until 1969 and he became a lieutenant. In 1969 he joined the Sheriff's Department in Montgomery County and worked most of his career there on the fugitive squad before retiring in 1994.

At one time, Mr. Main was active with the Frederick Seneca Football Club. He was an avid bow hunter and former member of the Tuscarora Archery Club and also was a bicyclist and had received the Presidential Fitness Award. He was a member of the Clan Gunn Society and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 1067, Frederick.

Surviving are his children, Verena L. Rose of Olney and James F. Main and wife, Debbie, of Mount Airy; two stepsons, Robert and Michael Maxwell; two brothers, James E. Main of Lake Gaston, N.C., and Wilbur L. Main of Frederick; four grandchildren, Edward J. Rose and wife, Lisa, Amanda L., Emily J. and Andrew J. Main; two great-grandchildren, Justin L. and Abbey L. Rose; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 17, in Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Robert E. Manthey will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Concerns of Police Survivors Inc., P.O. Box 3199, Camdenton, MO 65020.

Mr. Richard L. Jaquith

Mr. Richard L. Jaquith, 62, of Ijamsville, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. He was the husband of Roberta Huber.

Born Jan. 7, 1947, in Hartford, Conn., he was the son of Richard H. Jaquith of Lanham, and the late Emma L. Bottum.

Mr. Jaquith retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years. He spent 17 years in the Special Forces, retiring as command sergeant major at Kenner Army Hospital, Fort Sill, Okla.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Helen D. Rollins of Frederick, and Debra L. Jaquith of Ijamsville.

Graveside service and interment will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Ms. Anne Neher

Anne C. Neher, 54, of Taylorsville, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at home.

She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Henry Neher and the late Catherine Rita (O'Neill) Neher

Ms. Neher attended the CHANGE Inc. program held in the Senior Center in Westminster. She loved music, jigsaw puzzles, bowling, crafts, shopping and going on trips to Disney World. She also liked to paint and won a first place award for one of her paintings. She was a very social person and a member of St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Libertytown.

She is survived by a sister and her husband, whom where her caregivers, Mary and Michael Hughes of Taylorsville; sister, Marie Gussio of Timonium; brother and his wife, Benjamin H. and Sally Neher Jr. of Melbourne, Fla.; brother, Michael Neher of San Mateo, Calif. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral liturgy will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church of Libertytown. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield, MD 21784.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CHANGE Inc., 125 Stoner Ave. Westminster, MD 21157.

Mr. Jack Rippeon

Jack Benny Rippeon, 72, of Frederick, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 20, 2009, at his residence, with his loving family by his side.

Born March 14, 1937, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Frank L. Rippeon and Virgie M. Nusbaum Rippeon, both of Frederick.

He was the husband of Norene St. Clair.

Jack loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to travel.

He was an Army and Army Reserve veteran and the recipient of a Good Conduct Medal.

He worked as a manager for Ford Tractor for many years; as well as working for companies Hesston, Sparex and most recently United Farm Implements as a longtime farm equipment representative for the Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky regions, with annual exhibitions of farm equipment.

Jack was a "people-person" and did not know any "strangers" which served him well as a farm equipment salesman.

He was an active member and treasurer for Central Maryland Dealers Association of Frederick and very active in the Frederick County Farmers Association which involved working at the Fair passing out milk and helping with farm equipment exhibits.

He enjoyed growing vegetables in his garden and giving the proceeds away to family, neighbors and friends.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Tina Rice and husband, Russell, of Frederick, and Geraldine Frank of Frederick; son, Carl (Mac) St. Clair of Frederick; five grandchildren, Donny Frank-Rice and wife, Dina, of Gettysburg, Pa., Spencer Rice of Frederick, Robert Frank and wife, Katie, of Hagerstown, Jessica Hoffman of Frederick, and Christopher St. Clair of Smithsburg; five great-grandchildren, Zachary Frank-Rice of Gettysburg, Pa., Melanie and Josh Frank of Hagerstown, Landon and Paige Hoffman of Frederick; sister, Anne Adams and her husband, Buddy, of Leesburg, Fla.; brother, M. Eugene Rippeon and his wife, Dotty, of Frederick; twin sister, Jill Schelfe and her husband, Nello, of Shrewsbury, Pa.; along with several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to his nurses, Stacy Bowers and Marilyn Ayers as well as pastors David Hendershot and Jack Gilbert of New Life Church.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home.

The Rev. Michael Palmer will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be Donny Frank-Rice, Spencer Rice, Robert Frank, Carl St. Clair, Barry Dudley and Russell Rice.

Entombment will be at Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Memorial contributions may be made to Frederick County Farmers Association/Frederick County Agricultural Society, Inc. (Great Frederick Fair), 797 E. Patrick Street, P.O. Box 604, Frederick, MD 21705 and/or Frederick County Hospice, 516 Trail Ave., P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21701, in memory of Jack B. Rippeon.

Mr. C. Lee Crabill

C. Lee Crabill, 75, of Frederick, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 31, 1933, in Gaithersburg, he was the son of the late Collieta Leon (Skeets) and Mabel Emma Becker Crabill.

Mr. Crabill lived most of his life in Wheaton, until moving to Frederick in the early 1990s. He was a longtime member of the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department and worked for the B&O; Railroad out of Washington. He further worked as a auto mechanic for Montgomery Ward in Wheaton until his retirement. He loved spending time at Culler Lake feeding the ducks and was an avid NASCAR fan. Richard Petty was his favorite driver.

Lee leaves behind his wife, Shirley; his children: daughter, April Early and husband, Tony, of Dallas, Texas, son, David Crabill of Hermann, Mo., daughter, Patricia Crabill of Frederick; grandchildren, Lori Williams, Justin and Elizabeth Lowe, Taylor Crabill, Taylor Wilkinson, Brandon Hubbard; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Crabill is additionally survived by his sister, Mabel Richardson and husband, Wayne, of Summerville, S.C.; brother, Noah Crabill and wife, Linda, of Hernando, Miss.; sister-in-law, Beverly Harman and husband, Harold, of Rockville; brother-in-law, George Overholtzer Jr. and wife, Darlene, of Frederick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation with family will be held from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, from the funeral home. The Rev. Charles G. Beekley will officiate. Interment will be at the George Washington cemetery, Adelphi.

If desired, donations may be made to the Frederick County Humane Society, 5712-D Industry Lane, Frederick, MD 21704.

Mr. Alvin Watkins

Mr. Alvin R. Watkins, 88, of Frederick, died Saturday evening, April 18, 2009, at Golden Living Center, Frederick. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maizie (Haines) Watkins.

He was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School, Class of 1939, Rockville. Mr. Watkins was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army 8th Air Force. He was a graduate of U.S. Army Air Force mechanics School at Gulfport, Miss. He was also a graduate of Instrument Technical School at Chanute Field, Ill. He retired from B&O-CSX; Railroad with 44 years of service as a signal inspector. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen for 44 years.

After retiring, he regularly attended the B&O; R.R. Veterans meetings in Martinsburg, W.Va. Mr. Watkins was a member of Myersville Baptist Church for 30-plus years and a charter member of South End Baptist Church, Frederick. He also was a charter member of Carroll Manor Volunteer Fire Co., Adamstown.

Surviving beside his wife are three children, Alvin R. Watkins Jr. and wife, Ruby, of Frederick, Glenda E. Watkins and her companion, Ronald Cole, of Frederick, Bernie L. Watkins and wife, Cathy, of Myersville; four grandchildren, Robert, John, Traci and Amber Watkins; and two great-grandchildren, Collan and John Watkins Jr. He will also be remembered by a special niece, Colleen Schuettler.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, David Lee Watkins; sisters, Addie Stull, Reba Thompson, Helen Miller and Lucy Swartzbaugh; brothers, Rudy E., Norman B. and Lester B. Watkins; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held in Mount Olivet cemetery.

Mr. Fredrick Greene

Fredrick L. Greene, 70, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 18, 2009.

He was born on Sept. 29, 1938, in Pleasant Valley, Texas, to Birnell and L.V. Greene. After graduating as valedictorian of the Class of 1956 at Quitman Colored High School, Fred matriculated to Prairie View A&M; University, where he joined the Army ROTC. He made his presence readily known as a campus leader and a standout among his peers.

He received his bachelor of science degree in biology with a minor in chemistry and was named a Distinguished Military graduate. He entered the Army as a second lieutenant on the May 23, 1960 with a regular Army commission.

He was a decorated veteran in the Army RA Medical Service Corps during Vietnam. Fred continued his education at Ball State University in Indiana, graduating with his master's degree in psychology, and he retired from the military after 27 years of active duty service.

Thereafter, he served as the program administrator of the College of Pharmacy at Xavier University of Louisiana for 10 years. He unceasingly ventured to help others reach their fullest potentials and the vast knowledge and discipline that he attained through his life experiences enabled him to mentor, not only his own children and grandchildren, but innumerable other young men and women whose paths crossed his.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sefronia A. Gaines Greene; his two daughters, Daphne A. Ingram (Darryll) and Dana M. McDowelle (Orlando); four grandchildren, Duron, Harrington, Darian and Onaje; three sisters, Valta Beck (Carroll) of Carthage, Texas, Zephyr Henderson (Clezell) of Terrell, Texas, and Mamie Sue Fuller of California; a brother, Stonell Greene (Wyonella) of Dallas, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Myrna G. Franklin, Dolores Stripling (Joseph), and Josephine Joseph; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.

A celebration of Fred's life will be held Thursday, April 23, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Houston, Texas, with a wake service at 8:45 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. funeral mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the "Fredrick L. Greene Memorial Scholarship Fund," 11601 Shadow Creek Pkwy, Suite #111-325, Pearland, TX 77584.

Mr. James McCarthy Jr.

James Daniel McCarthy Jr., of Potomac, died April 19, 2008, due to complications from pneumonia, surrounded by his family, at Inova Alexandria Hospital.

Born on June 23, 1930 in Detroit, Mich., Mr. McCarthy graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1948 and Wayne State University undergraduate and law programs shortly thereafter. Following law school, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as a tax agent with the Internal Revenue Service. Later he would move to New York City and worked for the international accounting firm Alexander Grant and Co.

A resident of Rockville and Potomac since 1967, Mr. McCarthy returned to the Washington, D.C. area to lead the tax consulting division at General Business Services, Inc. -- once the largest franchise business in the U.S.

During his time at GBS, he provided annual tax seminars across the country and developed close personal friendships with many of GBS's more than 700 franchisees. After 20 years, he left GBS and started his own practice, Specialized Tax Service where he worked until the day he died. It was noted by his family, that he made it through one more tax season.

While providing tax and estate advice was has prime livelihood, one of his greatest joys and proudest accomplishments were the students he taught and mentored for more than 20 years at Southeastern University in Washington, D.C.

His marriage to Judith Lemanske ended in divorce.

Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret Buckler McCarthy of Potomac; one daughter, Ellen McCarthy (Hannah) of Alexandria, Va.; one son, Timothy McCarthy of Brunswick; son-in-law, Gordon Hannah of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, Benton McCarthy, Liam Hannah and Eileen Hannah; two nieces, Beth Ranalli and Audra Kozlowski; four nephews, Peter Hengy, James Hengy, Michael Hengy, Michal Baert. He was predeceased by a sister, Ann McCarthy Hengy.

A funeral mass will be held for Mr. McCarthy at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church in Prince Frederick. Internment will follow at Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Friends and family are invited for food, beverage and good memories at 1:30 p.m. at Rod and Reel Restaurant, Chesapeake Beach Resort.

Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Wayne State University Law School, 471 W. Palmer St., Detroit, MI 48202 or Catholic Central High School; 27225 Wixom Road, Novi, MI 48374.
