Mrs. Catherine Rollins

Mrs. Catherine Jean Rollins, 65, of Frederick, departed this life on Monday, April 20, 2009. She was the wife of John L. Rollins. Born Sept. 24, 1943, in Westpoint, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Rev. Ivory Paul Sr. and Ida Sanford Blackman.

She received her bachelor's degree in secondary education from Bowie State College in Bowie, and received her master of education degree from Hood College in Frederick. She taught elementary school in Carroll County Public Schools until her retirement 32 years later. She was also a devoted employee of Sears, Roebuck and Co. for 31 years.

She was an active member of her church, Asbury United Methodist, Frederick, and a member of the Fred-Carroll Bowie Alumni and the Retired Teachers Associations of Frederick and Carroll counties.

Besides her loving husband of 32 years, she is survived by two stepdaughters, Pam Tucker and Jonita Wilson and husband, Kirk; one stepson, Timothy Overs and wife, Elaine; one sister, Ethel P. Blackman of Gaithersburg; two brothers, Ivory Paul Blackman Jr. and wife, Catherine, of Richmond, Va., and Oliver M. Blackman of Westminster; seven sisters-in-law, Harriet Ames, Mary Long, Ida G. Brown and Clara Biggus, all of Frederick, Virginia 'Iona' Rollins, Mariam 'Babe' McBride and Frances Reynolds, all of Baltimore; one brother-in-law, Bishop Roger E. Rollins and wife, Rosalind, of Frederick; devoted friend, Catherine McCoy; and numerous nephews, nieces, stepgrandchildren, cousins and friends.

A public viewing will be held 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home, 110 W. South St., Frederick. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Asbury United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at Asbury United Methodist Church, West All Saints Street, Frederick, with her pastor, The Rev. LaDelle Brooks, officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunnyside cemetery, Adams-town.

Arrangements are by Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home.

Mr. Frank Lantz

Frank L. Lantz, 66, of Raven Rock Park Road, Sabillasville, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born July 4, 1942, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Mary V. (McKissick) Lantz of Gettysburg, Pa., and the late Howard Milton Lantz.

He worked as a carpenter for years with his uncle, Dick Lantz (deceased); he was a logger for Lawrence Forrest and was president and manager of South Mountain Rod and Gun Club of Smithsburg from 1977 to 2007, when he retired.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his companion of 30 years, Dee Lewis; daughter, Melinda Wetzel and husband, Tony, of Frederick; sons, Milton Lantz and wife, Diane, of Fairfield, Pa., and Gregory Lantz of Hagerstown; sister, Tina Minnick of Camp Hill, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Qwen Lantz, on Dec. 12, 2002.

At his request there will be no services, viewing or memorial donations.

Arrangements are by J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Mrs. Delores Naylor

Mrs. Delores (Missy) Elaine Naylor, 72, of Frederick, died Monday, April 20, 2009, at College View Nursing Facility, Frederick.

Born June 19, 1936, in Hopehill, she was the daughter of Robert and Nettie Diggs.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Elijah (Buck) Rudolph Naylor Sr.

She was a member of Hopehill United Methodist Church, an affiliate member of St. Paul AME Church of Dickerson.

She is survived by six children, Deborah Diggs of-- Lancaster, Calif., Vonda Countee, Linda Naylor, Wayne Naylor Sr. (Tracy), Elijah Naylor Jr. (Sharon) and Robin Naylor, all of Frederick; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers and sisters, Austin Diggs of Oxnard, Calif., Doris Kane and Della Mitchner of Baltimore, Shirley Foreman of Frederick, Betty McIntyer of Elkridge, Irene Camara (Kassick), Theresa Williams, Earl Diggs and Leonard Diggs, all of Frederick.

She was preceded in death by sisters and brothers, William Diggs, Thomas Diggs, James Diggs, Fred Diggs, Catherine McWilliams, Christine McDaniels and Martha Haynesworth.

Public and family viewing will be from 10 a.m. to noon, with funeral services beginning at noon, Monday, April 27, at Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home, 110 W. South St., Frederick. Interment will be at St. Paul AME Church cemetery, Dickerson.

Mr. William Patterson Sr.

Mr. William Brent "Pat" Patterson Sr., 84, of Hedgesville, W.Va., died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born May 31, 1924, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late George Wayland Patterson and Vevie Onita Brent. He was the husband of June Elizabeth Pearson Patterson. Mr. Patterson was a lifetime carpenter, farmer and horseman. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a Baptist by faith.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six daughters, Chris Thomason of Kearneysville, W.Va., Catherine Monard of Frederick, Carolyn Wells of Petersburg, W.Va., Wanda Patterson of New Canton, Va., Nancy Peterson of Charlottsville, Va., and Vevie Gilliam of Fort Benning, Ga.; four sons, William Patterson Jr., of Clarksburg, Cliff Patterson of Port St. John, Fla., Robert Patterson of Frederick, and Michael Folba of New Orleans, La.; a sister, Sara Stimmel of Raleigh, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Bruce Patterson and George Patterson; one sister, Elizabeth Adams; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jonesboro Baptist Church, Piney River, Va. Interment will follow at Jonesboro cemetery in Piney River. There will be no viewing hours.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Berkeley County Senior Center or Hospice of the Panhandle.

Mrs. Sandra Layman

Mrs. Sandra Kay Layman, 65, of Walkersville, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Ronald Layman.

Born Aug. 15, 1943, in Charleston, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Claude and Katherine Wood Chapman.

Sandra was an avid bingo player, enjoyed reading and especially enjoyed socializing with all who were around her. She also enjoyed taking rides through the countryside with her husband.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her stepchildren, Ronald Layman Jr., and wife, Nicki, of Boonsboro, Julie Layman, Meghan Layman and John Layman, all of Walkersville; two stepgrandchildren, Samantha and Isabella; six sisters, Claudia Chapman of Ellicott City, Virginia Barker and husband, Michael, of Charleston, W.Va., Joyce Terry and husband, James, of Glen Allen, Ala., Rose Margolis and husband, Michael, of Rockville, Debra Masters and husband, Steve, of Fayetteville, W.Va., and Jo Brown and husband, Eddie, of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine nieces; and 12 nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, Lawrence Van Robson and John Martin Robson; and a brother, James Dennis Chapman.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville. The Rev. Benjamin Breakall and the Rev. Chris Glass will officiate.

Interment will be private.

Contributions may be expressed, in her memory, to Children's Hospital Foundation, 111 Michigan Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20010, or the Boy Scouts of America, 9190 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814-3897.

Mr. Harry Burton Kester

Mr. Harry Burton Kester, 78, died at home in Williamsburg, Va., Sunday, April 19, 2009. Burt was born in Mahanoy City, Pa., the eldest son of Harry J. and Catherine Goodes Kester.

His musical training started in Frederick County Public Schools. As a high schooler he played with the Yellow Springs Concert Band. He initially studied the flute before expanding to bassoon and clarinet. Thus he began a long career as a professional musician and an expert woodwind doubler. He attended the University of Maryland as a music major and became a much sought-after flutist and bassoonist with such ensembles as the National Gallery Orchestra, Baltimore theater orchestras and other professional organizations in the Maryland and Washington areas. Following military service in the U.S. Air Force, he toured the country with the national company of "Fiddler on the Roof," performing over 400 shows.

In 1970, Burt entered The Carnegie Institute of Technology (Now Carnegie Mellon University), earning bachelor's and master's degrees studying under renowned Pittsburgh Symphony bassoonist Arthur Kubey, and conducting with NBC Symphony alumnus Chauncy Kelly. After a short period of freelance work in Pennsylvania, he was offered the principal bassoon position in the Norfolk Symphony, an ensemble which soon became the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.

In 1975, Burt joined the faculty at the College of William and Mary. In his 34 years at the college, he served in a multitude of capacities. He taught all types of woodwind instruments and led student ensembles that performed for the college community and throughout the Williamsburg area. He was a member of the Applied Music Advisory Committee for the Department of Music since its inception.

Mr. Kester is survived by his brother, Art and his wife, Donna; nephew Matt of Frederick; and nephew Daniel Kester of Ocean City. He was predeceased by his niece, Susan Jeanne Kester, and her son, Jacob Tribett, in 1994. He was also predeceased by his former wife, Jean Sterling. He will be missed by special friends, Dr. Joseph Brown and his wife, Kae, and John Lindberg.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Susan Jeanne Kester Bassoon Scholarship at the Department of Music, College of William and Mary, P.O. Box 1693, Williamsburg, VA 23187-1693.

The spring concert of the William and Mary Symphony Orchestra to be held 8 p.m. April 29, in Phi Beta Kappa Hall, was originally intended to honor Burt Kester upon his retirement from the college at the end of the present semester. The concert will now be dedicated to him in memoriam.

Mrs. Ruth Naomi Watkins

Mrs. Ruth Naomi (Herring) Watkins, a 55-year resident of Howard County, died Friday, April 24, 2009. She was the beloved wife of 52 years of the late Roland Eugene Watkins; loving mother of John Wayne Watkins and wife, Sandy, Richard Gary Watkins and wife, Olivia, Mark Douglas Watkins and wife, Jean, and Karen Naomi Watkins; cherished grandmother of Tim Watkins and wife, Lisa, Jason Watkins, Dennis Watkins, Adam Watkins, Matt Lewis, Nicholas Watkins and Amanda Watkins; great-grandmother of Morgan, Tyler, Megan and the late Emily Watkins.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Slack Funeral Home, P.A., 3871 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the funeral home. Interment will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Richard Rhoderick

Richard Leon Rhoderick, 84, of Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick, died suddenly Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born in Middletown, Nov. 11, 1924, he was a son of the late George Carlton Jr. and Olive E. Bowlus Rhoderick. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, and was a 1941 graduate of Middletown High School. After graduation, he attended the University of Maryland in the College of Engineering, until he enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1944. He graduated from the U.S. Midshipman's School in Columbia and received a commission as ensign.

Mr. Rhoderick served on active duty for two years in the Pacific on the USS Wadleigh. He returned to school and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1948 with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering. In 1955, he completed his graduate studies at the University of Maryland with a master of science. In 1963, he also received a bachelor of laws from the University of Baltimore.

Mr. Rhoderick worked for the Navy Department Bureau of Mines and retired after 37 years of federal service in 1982. He traveled extensively and enjoyed life. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by three sons, John Carl Rhoderick of Silver Spring, Richard Robert Rhoderick of Raleigh, N.C., and Mark David Rhoderick of Silver Spring; eight grandchildren; one brother, George Carlton Rhoderick IV of Middletown; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 27, at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, at Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, 107 W. Main St., Middletown. The Rev. Kathy Vitalis Hoffman, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be made in Zion Lutheran cemetery, Middletown.

Ms. Judy Vaught

Ms. Judy Carol Vaught (Palmer), 62, formerly of Middletown, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 7, 1946, in Salem, Va., she was the daughter of the late Travis and Louise Vaught. She graduated from Robert E. Peary High School in Montgomery County. She was a single mom and raised two kids on her own. She was always a dedicated employee and worked very hard at all of her jobs to support her family. She last worked at Community Living in Frederick, where she found a great deal of satisfaction in helping others.

Judy was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by many friends and family. She is survived by two children, Travis Walter and his wife, Jackie, and Tiffany Fossett and her husband, Richard; six grandchildren, Taylor, Kathleen, Shane, Ryan, Reagan and Kellen; two sisters, Claudia Holloway and her fianc?, Frank Rothwell, and Terry Borroughs and her husband, Lloyd; a nephew, Tanner; and a niece, Hailee. She will also be remembered by a special friend, Robert Bladen.

Crafting, the Kentucky Derby, Chitter Hollow, crocheting, love of friends and family, family gatherings, gardens, shopping, a unique and wonderful taste for the unusual and the devine, creative cooking, good food, good drinks, good times and so much more are all memories she has left behind for this world to never forget her.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Judy's life will be held from 3 p.m. to sunset Friday, May 1, at the Tea Room at Gambrill State Park in Frederick. Please omit cut flowers.

Mrs. Vera DeLauter

Mrs. Vera Lorraine DeLauter, 78, of Sabillasville, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at Glade Valley Nursing and Convalescent Center, Walkersville. She was the wife of Glenn Blickenstaff "G.B." DeLauter, who died June 5, 2006. They were married June 21, 1949.

Born April 25, 1930, in Smithsburg, she was the daughter of the late Paul B. and Carrie Ridenour Jones.

Mrs. DeLauter drove Frederick County school buses for more than 40 years. She was an avid gardener, quilter and loved to crochet. She also enjoyed bird-watching.

Surviving is her daughter, Martha DeLauter of Cascade; five grandchildren, Steven Keith Forrest, Robert DeLauter and wife, Rebecca, Tammy Main, April DeLauter, and Adam DeLauter and wife, Beth; eight great-grandchildren, Matthew DeLauter, Anthony Forrest, Leigh-Anne Hardiman, Carson DeLauter, Devin DeLauter, Gavin DeLauter, Cooper DeLauter and Nevaeh DeLauter.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. DeLauter was preceded in death by her son, Robert Glenn "Bobby" DeLauter.

Family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, at the funeral home. The Rev. Robert Fitz will officiate. Interment will be in Salem United Methodist Church cemetery, Wolfsville.

Mrs. Mary D. Mark

Mrs. Mary D. Mark, 79, of Frederick, died on Friday, April 24, 2009, at Kline Hospice House, Mount Airy. She was the wife of the late Howard A. Mark, who died on Sept. 11, 1982.

Born on Dec. 13, 1929, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late John and Theresa Zinner Sedlak.

Mrs. Mark was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Frederick, and Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda M. Stone and husband, Gary, of Jefferson, and Phyllis M. Hane and husband, John, of Middletown; and grandchildren, Jessica, Emily and Sadie Hane and Joseph and Jonathan Stone.

Graveside services will be held in Holly Hills Memorial Park, Baltimore.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kline Hospice House, 7000 Kimmel Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.
