Mrs. Joy Reese

Mrs. Joy Elaine Reese, 60, of Antietam Drive, Keedysville, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, surrounded by her family.

Born Nov. 18, 1948, in Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late Marvin E. and Othelia E. (Ridenour) Reese-Rager.

She attended Boonsboro-area schools. She was previously employed by Washington County Hospital and Williamsport Nursing Home as a nurse's assistant and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses of Hagerstown. She was an animal lover who rescued many animals over the years.

She is survived by her daughter, Kim Midgley and husband, Jeff, of Thurmont; granddaughters, Amanda Midgley, and Kati Midgley and fianc?, Jon; nephew, Tim Swartz; and two great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Deloris Swartz; one infant brother; and nephew, Charles Swartz.

There will be no viewing.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, from the Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses Hagerstown, with Elder James Fowler officiating.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Joy to Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses, 30 Nottingham Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Arrangements are by J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Mr. Ira Houck

Mr. Ira Marvin "Buck" Houck, 84, of Walkersville, went peacefully to be with his Lord on Sunday, April 19, 2009.

Born Dec. 8, 1924, in Woodsboro, he was the son of the late Ira George and Beulah Rebecca Smith Houck. He was the husband of Vivian Zimmerman Houck, his beloved wife of 53 years who preceded him in death in May 2000.

Buck was a graduate of Walkersville High School and Hagerstown Business College. He was a gifted baseball player. At the age of 13, he began playing ball in the Maryland State League with the Woodsboro team. He was then drafted into the minor leagues and played with such notable players as Yogi Berra, Jackie Robinson and Tommy Lasorda.

Among the teams he played for were the Philadelphia Athletics and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In 1944, he led the Interstate League in hitting. After retirement from professional baseball, Buck continued to play for the local Walkersville team and was active in the Glade Valley Athletic Association.

He coached and inspired many local young men. He was inducted into the YMCA of Frederick County's Alvin G. Quinn Hall of Fame in 1993 in honor of his baseball accomplishments.

After his retirement from baseball, he was employed by the Frederick Sherwin Williams Co. and later by the Comptrollers Office of the state of Maryland. Buck was a life member of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Co. No. 11 where he most notably formed their Marching Unit and organized the grounds for the annual carnival. He was also a life member of the Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Co. 16 where he was the chairman of the bingo committee.

As a member of the Democratic Central Committee of Frederick County, he was active in local politics and campaigned for many candidates, including his uncle, Harry O. Smith. He was an active member of the Glade United Church of Christ, Walkersville, for more than 40 years.

Surviving are his daughters, Jacquelyn DeWitt and husband, David, of Frederick, and Karen Sue Burall and husband, Ashley, of Walkersville; sister, Phyllis Houck Smith of Walkersville; sister-in-law, Lorraine Houck of Woodsboro; brother-in-law, Sonny Zimmerman of Walkersville; two grandsons, Ryan Andrew DeWitt and Matthew Houck DeWitt and wife, Erin; and great-granddaughter, Grace Madelyn DeWitt. He will also be remembered by a close friend of 60 years, Horace Wright Sr. of Walkersville.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Hartzell Houck and Kenneth Smith Houck.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, with the Rev. Albert K. Lane III, executive pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick and the Rev. Eugene Bartell, interim pastor of Glade United Church of Christ, officiating.

Interment will be in Glade cemetery, Walkersville. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Company, 3 Third St., Woodsboro, MD 21798.

Mrs. Judy Martens

Mrs. Judy Ann Martens Poole, 62, of Myersville, died peacefully Saturday evening, April 18, 2009, at her residence following a long battle with cancer. She was the wife of Mr. Michael Eugene Poole, her husband of 13 years.

Born Nov. 17, 1946, in Frederick, she was a daughter of Mrs. Lois Marie Umbarger Sutphin Burdette of Germantown and the late James Earl Sutphin.

Mrs. Martens operated J&M; Drywall Inc., of Frederick, and was a member of Germantown Baptist Church and the Red Hat Society.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and mother, is her daughter, Vanessa Martens Lamendola and husband, Paul, of Ijamsville; grandsons, Joseph and Kevin; and siblings, Irene Mills and husband, Conrad, of North Potomac, Stanford Sutphin and wife, Kathy, of Manchester, and Michael Sutphin and wife, Lorene, of Union Bridge; as well as numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23, from her church, Germantown Baptist Church, 17640 Riffleford Road, Germantown.

Her pastor, Rev. Robert C. Walker, assisted by former pastor, the Rev. James Cunningham, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the churchyard.

The Wood family

Christopher Alan Wood, 34, Francie Lyn Billotti-Wood, 33, Chandler Alan Wood, 5, Gavin Christopher Wood, 4, and Fiona Frances Wood, 2, died at their home Saturday, April 18, 2009.

Chris was born in North Little Rock, Ark., on May 14, 1974, and was the son of Jerry E. and Annette Richardson Wood. He was employed as a sales accountant with the CSX Railroad. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Melissa Wood Slater and her daughter, Mia, and his grandmother, Juaneva Wood.

Francie was born in Frederick on Feb. 27, 1976, and was a daughter of Sam and Mary Billotti. She was a graduate and senior class president of the Middletown High School, Class of 1994, and had worked in fund development for non-profit organizations. She recently became a board member for Volunteer Frederick. She taught Sunday school at Holy Family Catholic Community.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her siblings, Angela and her husband, Tim, Sam and his wife, Cassandra, and Andy and his wife, Kristina, and their children, Chelsea, Kali, Katie, Alexis, Linda, Adryana, AJ and Sam. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Chandler was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on July 8, 2003, and was in kindergarten at the Middletown Primary School.

Gavin was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on Oct. 24, 2004, and was in pre-school at MUMC.

Fiona was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 23, 2007, and she was a little princess to all who knew her.

The Wood family was active at Holy Family Catholic Community Church. They played and coached soccer, were active with T-Ball and together recently participated in a family marathon.

Friends will be received from 4 to 6 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 23, with the reciting of the Rosary at 5:30 p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Community Church, 7321 Burkittsville Road, Middletown. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 24, at the church, celebrant will be Rev. J. Kevin Farmer, assisting will be Pastor Kathy Vitalis-Hoffman, and Pastor R. Dallas Greene.

Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran cemetery, Middletown.

Mr. Leonard Holcomb Jr.

Leonard "Hawk" Holcomb Jr., 83, of Romney, W.Va., died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 14, 1925, in Mill Creek, Okla., the son of the late Leonard and Mabel (Moss) Holcomb Sr.

Mr. Holcomb retired as senior fuel and ash foreman from Potomac Edison Power Plant in Dickerson after 39 years of service.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a watertender 2C SV6 on the USS Fremont. He was a member of the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101 and the American Legion Hampshire Post 91, Romney. Mr. Holcomb was a lifetime member of the Masons' Columbia Lodge 285 A.F. & A.M., Arlington, Va.

Mr. Holcomb is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen Esther (Burgess) Holcomb; one son, Michael Lee Holcomb and wife, Pamela, of Frederick; four daughters, Jo Ann Brooks and husband, Raymond, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Judy Mae Holcomb-Chavez of Arlington, Va., Toby Rae Rhodes and husband, Ralph, of Frederick and Carolyn L. Counsellor and fianc?, John Kevin Bigelow, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; two brothers, James Holcomb of Reno, Nev., and Edgar Holcomb of Avon, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Joy Foster and husband, Craig, Kenny Brooks, Tracy Moore, Curtis and Chad Fisk, Katie, Kristen, Nikki and Josh Holcomb; four great-grandchildren, Dakota Harrison, Chance Moore, Cierra and Chase Brooks; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Holcomb will be taken to Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville, where family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 21. A Masonic service will take place at that time.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville, with preacher Paul Rennick officiating.

Interment will be at Monocacy cemetery, Barnesville, with military graveside rites.

Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home Inc., Romney, W.Va., and Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville.

Mr. Harry Ruby

Mr. Harry Randolph "Ruben" Ruby, 76, passed away Monday, April 20, 2009, at Gettysburg Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Mary Louise (Johnson) Ruby, who he married Aug. 20, 1953.

He was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Germantown, as the son of the late Frederick and Martha Virginia (Savage) Ruby.

Ruben was raised in Southern Frederick County and later in Germantown. He spent his entire life as a dairy farmer, starting out working on his grandfather's farm in Germantown. In the early mid-1950s he moved to his own farm in Hyattstown and then farmed many years in Cedar Grove. In 1974, he moved from Montgomery County to Frederick County to farm in Emmitsburg.

Retiring from his dairy farm, Harry continued to raise some heifers and beef cattle. He was a member of the Maryland Virginia Milk Association, past member of the Farm Bureau, and was an honorary member of the FFA. Rubens greatest joy was his family and friends; especially watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren showing at the local fairs. When he wasn't puttering around the farm, his greatest pastime was fishing. He was a Dallas Cowboy fan and loved his wrestling.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, Mr. Ruby is survived by his five children, Charles (Randy) Ruby and wife, Caythee, Robin Hertel and husband, Dave, Harry (Jay) Ruby and wife, Karen, all of Rocky Ridge, Bonnie Glotfelty and husband, Gary, of Monrovia, Barbara Buisch and husband, Allan, of Mount Airy; 12 grandchildren, Charles Ruby, Paul Warthen, Christy Donnelly, Erin Sanders, Jaime Manning, Kelly Glotfelty, Joshua Ruby, Scott Glotfelty, Casey and David Hertel, Noah and Jayden Ruby; two step-grandchildren, Adriene and Tyler Buisch; 10 great-grandchildren, Ashley and Austin Ridenour, Nicholas and C. J. Ruby, Emily Manning, Ethan and Isabella Sanders, Kayden Glotfelty, Jamison Ruby and Madison Donnelly; one step-great-grandchild, Samantha Ridenour; one brother, Raymond (Buddy) Kauffman of Frederick; two sisters, Darlene Day and Janet Jordon both of Ijamsville; along with several uncles and aunts and many nieces and nephews. He will be especially missed by "his adopted children," Connie and Charles Catron, David (Monk) and Jane Savage, Harry Gamble and Ronnie Savage.

Ruben was preceded in death by his sister, Winona Ruby Lee and Peggy Ramseur, along with his granddaughters, Rebecca (Ruby) Ridenour and Jessica Glotfelty.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Stauffer Funeral Home 104 E. Main St., Thurmont. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at the funeral home, with Rev. William Warehime officiating.

Interment will be in Blue Ridge cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Charles Catron, David Savage, Ronnie Savage, Jerry Savage, Harry Gamble and Norman Shriver. Honorary bearers will be his grandsons.

Mr. Nelson Millison

Mr. Nelson E. Millison, 45, of Frederick, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at his home. Born on Aug. 1, 1963, in Laurel, he was a son of Phylis A. (Pennell) Millison of Emmitsburg and the late Phillip DeWayne Millison.

Nelson was an accomplished bass guitarist for 25 years, he also collected and Refurbished a variety of stringed instruments. For inspiration he would say "My Kids, Kyle and Leigh, they are my heroes."

Surviving beside his mother are his children, Kyle Eugene Millison and Leigh Anne Millison; a sister, Connie Silver and her husband, Larry; four brothers, Keith Millison, Phillip Millison and wife, Penny, David Millison and wife, Mira, Troy Millison and wife, Valerie; 11 nieces and nephews; and a special aunt, Cindy Cloud.

The immediate family will receive family and friends from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 25. For a celebration of Nelson's life, at the residence of Phillip and Penny Millison, 17601 E. Sunshine Trail, Sabillasville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family may be directed to the same address.

Mr. Frank Chamberlain

Frank J. Chamberlain, who everyone knew as "Cisco," currently resided in Adamstown, died Saturday, April 18, 2009. He was born on April 3, 1976, in Salisbury. His family moved to Frederick in 1980, where he attended school.

Cisco graduated from Frederick High School and went to Elon College. Most recently, he worked for CC&C; Management for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Bethesda and also for Kumi Construction as an engineering technician.

Cisco enjoyed playing cards, watching movies, bartending as well as spending time with his friends and his motorcycle. He especially loved his little brother and their dog, 'Chewy.'

Cisco is survived by his mother, Crystal C. Chamberlain of Adamstown and his father, Grover (Skip) Chamberlain of Frederick; his sister, Catherine C. Chamberlain; and his brother, Christopher M. Chamberlain. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Diane M. Jones of Salisbury; grandfather, Cecil S. Jones of Laurel, Del. and wife, Cathie; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Grover H. Chamberlain Sr. of Silver Spring. He is also survived by his Aunt Lynn and Uncle Ron Cantwell of Hebron; his Aunt Peg from Charlotte, N.C.; as well as his cousins, Curt and Chad Cantwell, Cody Jones and Mike and John Metcalfe.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Rev. Linda W. Healy will officiate. Family will receive guests from 9 to 10 a.m.

A Facebook and MySpace memorial page has been established for those wanting to post pictures, thoughts or other memorials.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made the Frederick County Humane Society to celebrate Cisco's love of dogs.
