Mrs. Helena Long

Mrs. Helena (Rippeon) Long, 91, of Frederick, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Herman E. Long.

Born on April 20, 1918, near McKaig, she was a daughter of the late Rodney and Katie (Hesson) Rippeon. Mrs. Long was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Frederick. She devoted her life to her family and home.

Surviving besides her husband are one son, Wayne E. Long and wife, Eleanor, of Braddock Heights; three grandchildren, Michael W. Long and wife, Tammy, Patrick J. Long and wife, Lisa, and Christopher M. Long and wife, Marilyn; four great-grandchildren, Shaun M., Tyler W., Ashlyn S. and Matthew B. Long; and sisters-in-law, Alma and Betty Rippeon.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard "Dick" E. Long; four brothers, Vernon, Austin, Harry and Glenn Rippeon; a sister, Ruth Eichelberger; sisters-in-law, Lillian and Grace Rippeon; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Eichelberger.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23, in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Dr. Harold B. Wright II will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 705 W. Patrick St., Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Patricia Gladchuk

Mrs. Patricia Johnson Gladchuk, 83, of Frederick, died Friday, May 15, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the devoted wife of former Boston College and N.Y. Giants football great Chet Gladchuk Sr., who died in 1967.

Born March 14, 1926, in Mount Vernon, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Irving and Beatrice Thomas Johnson.

Mrs. Gladchuk had been employed in the Department of Physical Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, until 1991. She dedicated her life to caring for her family.

Surviving are five children, Chester Stephen Gladchuk Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Annapolis, Ellen Beatrice Gladchuk of Jefferson, John Peter Gladchuk of Frederick, Robert Edward Gladchuk of Gettysburg, Pa., and Stephen Luke Gladchuk and wife, Angela, of Frederick; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward Johnson of Pennsylvania; and three sisters, Jewel Locke, Barbara Roche and Rita Wickert, all of Connecticut. She was preceded in death by a brother, Irving Johnson Jr.

There will be no calling or visiting at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 1201 N. Market St., Frederick.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Monday, June 15, at St. Brigid's Roman Catholic Church, 122 N. Pleasant St., Amherst, Mass., with Rev. Fr. John Smegal as the celebrant.

Inurnment will follow in St. Brigid's cemetery, Hadley, Mass.

Mrs. Margaret Pauline Reeder

Mrs. Margaret Pauline Reeder, 86, of Frederick, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2009, at Golden Living Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Elmer M. Reeder, who passed away in 1999.

Born in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., on May 10, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Grace (Good) and Joseph Trussell Fritts. Margaret worked at the Frederick Tailoring Factory in Frederick for a number of years as a shaper.

A member of the Frederick Church of The Brethren, Margaret enjoyed the time she spent with her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Kaylene A. Stup of Frederick; four grandchildren, Billie Jean Winpigler and husband, Bion, Tonya Lee Mason and husband, Jon, Curtis A. Stup, and Cheryl L. Turner and husband, Jon; her great-grandchildren, Chad Martin and wife, Georgia, Nikki Martin, Ryan Winpigler, Kylee Mason, Douglas Mason, and Kelsey and Madison Turner; her brother, Eben M. Fritts; a sister-in-law, Stella Mae Fritts; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald F. Miller; a daughter-in-law, Donna Miller; a son-in-law, Richard Stup; three sisters, Catherine Myers, Mildred Felegi and Jenny Cary; and two brothers, Franklin Fritts and Randolph Fritts.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at the funeral home with Pastors Brian Messler and Kevin Syes officiating. Burial will follow in the Edgehill cemetery in Charles Town, W.Va.

Memorials in Margaret's name may be made to the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick, MD 21701 or to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Mrs. Amy Renee Webb-Best

Amy Renee Webb-Best, 23, of Knoxville, passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Born July 27, 1985, in Gaithersburg, she was the daughter of James and Joyce Webb of Boonsboro, and Donna and Gill Caniford of Knoxville. She leaves behind her husband, Alan Best, of Falling Waters, W.Va., and her three children, Arian and James Reynolds and Jaiddyn Ellis.

Also surviving are her brothers, Tim Cameron and his wife, Suzy, of Gaithersburg, and son, Tom; Jimmy Webb and wife, Jessie, of Keedysville, and children, Cody and Jeorjia; sisters, Crystal Carrett and husband, Alex, of Falling Waters, W.Va., and children Logan and Gracie; Tiffany Richard and husband, Roger, of Mount Airy, and children, Cassandra, Jacob and Natalie; grandparents, Gerald and Betty Hawkins of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Hugh and Shirley Webb of Gaithersburg.

Amy attended Brunswick High School. She loved her children, family and friends. Amy lived her life to the fullest.

Friends may visit 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at the Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, (Md. 108) Laytonsville, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 21.

Internment will be in Laytonsville cemetery.

Mr. Raymond J. Poulin

Mr. Raymond J. Poulin (W3UT), 87, of Middletown, passed away at home on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Ruby H. Poulin, his wife of 60 years.

Born March 13, 1922, in Lippitt, R.I., he was the son of the late Aldor and Flora Poulin. Raymond graduated from high school in New York, and completed technical schools in Washington and Kansas. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II and worked as a microwave engineer for Western Union and for the U.S. government.

From the age of 16, Raymond was a member of the American Radio Relay League and operated a HAM radio. He loved gardening and he had a large vegetable garden, from which he gave away lots of produce. He also enjoyed writing letters to the editor of The Frederick News-Post.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Poulin is survived by four children, Thomas R. Poulin and wife, Freda, Neil A. Poulin, Elise Poulin Culler and husband, Tim, and Phillip J. Poulin; a sister, Doris M. Cucura; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 22, at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, 11318 Meeting House Road, Myersville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, P.O. Box 575, Myersville, MD 21773.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody P.A., Frederick.

Mrs. Cora Welsh Clarke

Mrs. Cora Welsh Clarke, 91, of Frederick and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Monday, May 18, 2009, at Golden Living Center in Frederick.

Born May 17, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Bayless and Donna Hess Welsh.

She is survived by one son, F. Douglas Clarke and wife, Daneille Degenhardt Clarke of Frederick; one precious granddaughter, Elisabeth Clarke Clinton and husband, Jon Clinton; one adorable great-grandson, Camden Porter Clinton, all of Frederick; and one sister, Grace Knipe of Martinsburg. Cora was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, D. Derling Clarke, of Martinsburg, and two brothers.

The viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 21, at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 22, at the funeral home. The Rev. Arnold Brown will officiate. Private interment will be held at Rosedale cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of New Day Ministries, 100 N. Church St., Middletown, MD 21769.

Mr. Clarence Leonard Hughes

Mr. Clarence Leonard Hughes, 88, died Monday morning, May 18, 2009, at Pleasant View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Mount Airy. He was the husband of the late Eileen Kimble Hughes.

Born June 4, 1920, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was the son of the late Joseph and Tennessee Fergusion Hughes.

Surviving are four children, Melvyn Hughes of Texas, Richard Hughes of Ohio, and Donna Charameda and Barbara Hughes, both of Michigan.

Services and interment will be private.

Arrangements are by Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, Damascus.

Mr. James Kirby

Mr. James "Jim" A. Kirby, 72, of Poolesville, died Saturday, May 9, 2009.

He was the loving husband of Claire Kirby.

Born Aug. 27, 1936, in Silver Spring, he was the son of the late Joseph and Ruth Gaither Kirby.

Surviving besides his wife, are his children, Douglas Gunster (stepson) of Derwood, Charles Kirby of Frederick, Michael Kirby of Adamstown; one brother, Parker Kirby of Frederick; one sister, Elizabeth Musgrove of Florida; eight grandchildren, numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and his beloved dog, Chase.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Edward Kirby; and one sister, Virginia Wilson.

A memorial service celebrating Jim's life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 12, at the Poolesville Memorial Untied Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 17821 Elgin Road, Poolesville.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Jim's name to the American Heart Association or Goldheart Golden Retriever Rescue, P.O. Box 206, Mt. Airy, MD 21771 (Goldheart.org).

Arrangements are by Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville.

Mrs. Alice Faye Hokanson

Alice Faye Hokanson passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Faye was born Oct. 26, 1944, in Rockville, to Shields and Bessie Carter-Collins. In April of 1965, she married Elwood Lee Hokanson. They had one child, Kelli Anne Hokanson-Autz.

Faye is survived by her husband, Elwood; daughter, Kelli Anne and husband, Richard Autz; two stepchildren, Theresa Lee Hokanson and Elwood Christopher Hokanson, and daughter-in-law, Deborah Jane Lorenz-Hokanson; five grandchildren; two sisters, Rebecca Gwen Collins-Dovell and Elizabeth Christine Collins-Haines; and one brother, John Christian Collins; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Faye was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Shields.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N. Frederick. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody, P.A., Frederick.

Mr. Earl Adkins

Earl E. Adkins, 91, of Frederick, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Northampton Manor. He was the husband of the late Hazel Adkins, who passed away March of 2000.

Born April 5, 1918, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Keefer and Lottie Adkins.

Earl was a dairy farmer. He had a great love for the outdoors and animals.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Logue and husband, Kenneth, of Illinois and Linda Rothenhoefer and husband, Roger, of Thurmont; a son, Todd Adkins of Frederick; three grandchildren, Michael Palmer, Todd Adkins and Ellen Adkins; and two great-grandchildren, Lacey Palmer and Joslynn Adkins; and two sisters, Sara Knox and Elvia Castle.

He is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Godfrey and a brother, John Adkins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at the funeral home with Rev. James A. Coblentz officiating.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Madeline Staley

Mrs. Madeline Grace Staley, 88, of Manchester, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at her home after an extended illness.

Born March 9, 1921, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late Harry L. and Grace Flickinger Yingling.

She was the wife of Francis M. Staley, her husband of 16 years.

Mrs. Staley was a member of Mount Union Lutheran Church, near Union Bridge.

She was formerly employed at Royer's Restaurant of Thurmont for 25 years.

She loved to cook and especially to bake cherry pies, watch cooking shows on television, spend time with her children and grandchildren and she was a longtime member of Weight Watchers.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Connie M. Eyler Bohn of Taneytown and Debbie K. Hoerr and husband, William, of West Friendship; a son, Larry T. Eyler and wife, Deborah, of Rocky Ridge; a brother, Robert L. Yingling of Baltimore; stepdaughter, Susan Hovermale and husband Lloyd of Tyrone; eight grandchildren, one stepgrandson and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Amos Eyler in 1966; son-in-law, Lewis E. Bohn in 2006 and an infant grandson, Paul Hooper.

A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Mount Union Lutheran Church, 5000 Middleburg Road, with Rev. David Bare, interim church pastor and Virgil Cain, Lutheran seminarian, officiating.

Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, Uniontown.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge.
