Lena M. Fairbank
St. MICHAELS - Lena M. Fairbank of St. Michaels died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Genesis ElderCare - The Pines in Easton. She was 100.
Miss Fairbank, the oldest girl in a family of six children, was a 1916 graduate of St. Michaels High School, one of six girls in that class..
She began working at a jewelry store in town, and then at the Post Office. She also played piano for silent picture shows in the old theater that is now the Town Hall Mall, and played for a four-piece band.
In the 1920s, she began working as a secretary at an extension office in Easton opened by the University of Maryland. She also was a volunteer Gray Lady and nurse's aide at the hospital. She retired from the Extension Service in 1961, after 35 years of service.
She was a volunteer at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and at St. Mary's Square Museum in St. Michaels. She was the oldest member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, St. Michaels, and secretary of the Martha Circle for many years.
Miss Fairbank is survived by a sister, Rachel F. Marsh of St. Michaels, a nephew and two nieces.
Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 8. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, St. Michaels. Burial was at Olivet cemetery.

Nanon L. Frey
CAMBRIDGE - Nanon L. Frey of Cambridge died Friday, December 5, 1997, at Dorchester General Hospital. She was 83.
Born Aug. 10, 1914, in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Granville Spedden and Lee Snow LeCompte.
She was a 1930 graduate of Cambridge High School and a 1933 graduate and valedictorian of St. Mary's Female Seminary, St. Mary's City. She then attended Peabody Institute. Mrs. Frey taught piano and organ for many years and played for local affairs and functions.
She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, and Cambridge Yacht Club.
Mrs. Frey is survived by her husband, Sewell A. Frey, to whom she was married
June 22, 1940; three sons, Sewell L. "Toby" Frey of Oxford, J. Scott Frey of Hagerstown and Laird L. Frey of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. A brother, Granville S. LeCompte Jr. is deceased.
Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Thomas Funeral Home, Cambridge.

Mary A. Gargani
FEDERALSBURG - Mary A. Gargani of Federalsburg died Friday, December 5, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 76.
Born Aug. 1, 1921, at Federalsburg, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Elizabeth Hastings Andrew. Her husband, Arthur A. Gargani died March 4,1991.
A 1938 graduate of Federalsburg High School, she received her RN at Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She was employed as school nurse for Colonel Richardson High school for 10 years, and had been employed many years with Caroline County Health Department and Talbot County Health Department. She also was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 12th Field Hospital in the European Theater.
Mrs. Gargani was commander and chaplain of V.F.W. Post No. 5246 in Federalsburg, and the first woman V.F.W. Post commander on the Eastern Shore. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg, the United Methodist Women, Circle Homemakers Club, and the Deborah Circle. She was a charter member of Enoch House, and a member of Chestnut Grove United Methodist Women.
Mrs. Gargani is survived by a daughter, Joyce G. Baron of Lutherville; two sons, James A. Gargani of Federalsburg and William A. Gargani of North Hollywood, Calif.; two brothers, Thomas G. Andrew and William Andrew, both of Federalsburg; and six grandchildren.
Services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, Federalsburg. Burial was at Hill Crest cemetery.

Edith A. Gordon
EASTON - Edith Ann Gordon of Easton, formerly of Queen Anne, died Thursday, December 4, 1997, at Genesis ElderCare - The Pines. She was 83.
Born Aug. 21, 1914 ,at Summerdale, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Robert and Margaret Ella Wood Gordon.
She attended public schools and resided in New Jersey until 1948, when she moved to Queen Anne. In 1988, she moved to Easton.
There are no immediate survivors.
Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Stevensville cemetery, Stevensville.
Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton.
Mary L. Ledford
EASTON -Mary Louise Ledford of Easton died Thursday, December 4, 1997, at her home. She was 76.
Born at Wellston, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Forna R. and Mary Louella Grady Weinrich.
She attended Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C.
She was a member of Alpha Iota Sorority, a member of Poplar Island Yacht Club, master of Fidelity Rebekah Lodge No. 7 in Washington, D.C., and a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, St. Michaels.
Mrs. Ledford is survived by her husband of 52 years, Stanley B. Ledford; a daughter, Bonnie L. Stapp of Edmond, Okla.; a son, William M. Ledford II of Miami, Fla.; two brothers, F. Richard Weinrich of Annapolis and Lee W. Weinrich of Riverdale, Md.; and six grandchildren.
Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, St. Michaels. Services were also held at Fort Meyer Chapel, Arlington at 2 p.m., with burial at Arlington cemetery.

Lyda Thorpe
DENTON - Lyda Thorpe of Denton died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997 in the Taylor Home where she was a resident. She was 100.
She was a lifelong resident of Harrington, Del., before moving to Denton. Mrs. Thorpe was the daughter of the late Murten and Sallie Knox Dickerson.
She had been employed at the Shirt Factory in Harrington for 28 years, and also had been a self-employed paper hanger.
She was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church in Andrewsville, the United Methodist Women's group, the Harrington Senior Center.
Mrs. Thorpe is survived by three daughters, Mary Frances Turner of Ridgely, Caroline Dean of Greensboro and Agnes Klapp Moffett of Hartly, Del.; a sister, Virginia Smith of Warren, Michigan; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. A brother, Bradford Dickerson died in 1984.
Services were held at Price Funeral Home, Harrington, Del. at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7.

Charles R. Rishel
TRAPPE - Charles Raymond "Pappy" Rishel of Trappe died Thursday, December 4, 1997, at his home. He was 80.
Born Oct. 17, 1917, at Loganton, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry and Frances Herman Rishel.
He attended public schools in Pennsylvania, and began a career as a sawyer. In 1947, he and his wife moved to Talbot County. In the early 1980s he was employed in home construction, and in 1985 he retired.
Mr. Rishel is survived by his wife, the former Stella Almeda George, to whom he was married
in 1939; three sons, Kenneth Rishel of Bethlehem, and Charles Rishel A. Rishel and Raymond H. Rishel, both of Easton; five daughters, Dorothy Greenwood of Preston, Linda Thomas of Bethlehem, Susanna Deibel and Betty Thomas, both of Easton, and Frances Downes of Cordova; two brothers, 25 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren. Seven brothers and sisters are deceased.
Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 8, at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton. Burial was at Landing Neck cemetery.
