Chance, Anthony N.
Anthony N. Chance, 90 of Miami Beach, FL, died Monday April 14, 2008 at Mt. Sinai Hospital, FL. He was the former spouse of Mabel Marie York. Mr. Chance was born July 31, 1917 in Camden, NJ the son of the late Frank Joseph DiCiancio and late Rose Frumento. His career began in 1939 as an assistant messenger and ended as a Senior Editor Cartographic Supervisor of the Navy Hydrographic office. He served in the US Army in the Panama Canal Zone. Surviving him are Son and daughter-in-law Robert and Kathryn Chance, Daughter and Son-in-law Patricia and Jack Wilbert. Grandchildren, Kathy and husband Ramond, Wade, Shawn and wife Sharon, Robert and wife Kristy, Tony and wife Caroline, Michael and wife Denise, Patrick and wife Angkana, 11 Great Grandchildren. Niece and her husband Cathy and Nick Italiano. Preceded in death by Sister: Mary Mancini and Brothers Nicholas and Frank Chance. Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday April 19, 2008 1:00 PM at Winfield Bible Chapel, 5407 Woodbine Rd. Woodbine, MD 21797 with Rev. Kim Gee officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery, Woodbine, MD. The family will receive friends on Friday 7 to 9 PM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A. 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784.

Magin, Mary E.
Mary Ella Haines Magin, 93, of Westminster, who resided in Taylorsville for the majority of her life, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at Summerville Nursing Home of Westminster. Born February 8, 1915, in Pleasant Valley, MD, she was the oldest of eleven children of the late Walter Turner Haines and Mary Wantz Haines. She was a homemaker and farm wife with her late husband Donald Clark Magin (1912 – 1994) for 5 decades on their farms near Taylorsville. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, Dennings, and was an active Sunday school teacher for several decades. In the 50’s and 60’s she was an active member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and the local Homemakers Club. She was a gifted seamstress, cook, and baker. She also loved working in her flower gardens. Surviving are her daughter and two sons, Bonnie Swartzbaugh, Donald R. and Charles C. Magin; grandchildren Steve and Brian Will, Laura Bevard, all of Westminster and Richard Magin of Mt. Airy ; five great grandchildren; and 5 brothers. Friends and family may pay their respects on Thursday, April 17 at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA 1212 W. Old Liberty Road (Beside South Carroll High School), Sykesville, MD from (2-4 and 7-9 pm). A funeral service will be held at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA on Friday, April 18 at 10:00 am followed by interment at Taylorsville United Methodist Church, Taylorsville, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, Mary Magin Memorial, 2424 Burton Drive, New Windsor, MD 21776.

Arnold, Helen M.
Helen M. Arnold (nee Buell), age 87, of New Windsor, MD died on Thursday April 17, 2008 at Lorien Nursing Home in Taneytown, MD. She was born June 4, 1920 in Baltimore, MD. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed more than 30 years of retirement with her husband and family and many friends in Maryland and going as “snow birds” to Florida. She was an avid gardener “green Thumb”. She was the daughter of the late William L. Buell and the late Rose Chenowith Buell. She was the wife of the late Charles G.R. Arnold who died on April 6, 2007. She was the mother of Rose Lee Wachter and husband George of Frederick County, MD, Charles G. Arnold, Jr. and wife Jeanne of Ellicott City, MD and Donna M. Reed and husband John of Laurel, Delaware. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral Service will be held at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield on Monday April 21, 2008 at 10:00 AM with her son-in-law Deacon George Wachter officiating. Interment will be in Crestlawn Memorial Park, Marriottsville, MD.

Adams, Aleta
Aleta Adams (nee Tucker), age 91, of Sykesville, died Wednesday May 7, 2008 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, MD. She was born September 19, 1916 in Walnut, Kansas the daughter of the late Walter Wesley Tucker and the late Anna Elizabeth Sechreat Tucker. She was the wife of the late Frank W. Adams. She was a retired secretary for Springfield State Hospital Center in Sykesville. She was a member of Elders Baptist Church in Sykesville. She loved driving around. She was the mother of Arla Ely and husband William of Sykesville, and Karen Gerstmyer and husband Robert Sr. of Baltimore. Sister of the late Verda Mae Briggs. Loving grandmother of Lori Robinson of Taneytown, Robert Gerstmyer, Jr. of Ellicott City and Kevin Ely of Hampstead. Also survived by 3 great grandchildren. Funeral Service will be held on Monday May 12, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Elders Baptist Church, 1216 Liberty Road, Sykesville, MD, with the Rev. Jim Edmonson officiating. Shaw, Robert C.
Robert Clarence Shaw, of Mundelein, Ill., formerly of Taylorsville, MD died suddenly on Thursday May 8, 2008. He was 55 years old. A star athlete in high school and college and a successful business owner in his adult life, Robert was born and raised in the rolling hills of Carroll County, Maryland. Robert, with his twin brother, Ronald U. Shaw, attended South Carroll High School. There he starred in football and track, and was elected captain of both teams during his senior year. He was selected as the Scholar Athlete for the school by the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. Though he received offers of full scholarships to play football in college, he chose to attend Harvard with his twin brother. At Harvard, he excelled as defensive tackle on the football team. He was selected to the All Ivy Team twice, to the Associated Press All East Team as a senior, and he received Honorable All-American recognition in his senior year. After graduating from Harvard, Robert obtained his MBA from Columbia University. His career started with Container Corporation of America in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was quickly promoted to a position in Cupertino, CA. While in California, he met and married Katherine Szela.. Their son, Robert Jason Shaw, was born in 1987. Their daughter, Madeleine Celeste Shaw, followed in 1990. From California, Robert’s career took the family to Connecticut and then Illinois, where he became President of Contempo Design. He eventually started his own successful company, Innovaces, Inc., specialists in the design and manufacture of trade show exhibits. Robert was living in Mundelein, Illinois, at the time of his death. Besides his two children, Robert is survived by his mother Ruth E. Shaw (nee Condon) of Taylorsville, Maryland; his twin brother Ronald Shaw of Hereford, Maryland; and his brother Randall Shaw, also of Taylorsville, Maryland, as well as various nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Shaw. Friends may call at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 West Old Liberty Road, ( Beside South Carroll High School) Sykesville, MD., on Friday, May 16th, from 2 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 9:30 AM at the St. James United Methodist Church in New Windsor, Maryland, 2900 Marston Road, New Windsor, MD 21776. Interment St. James U.M. Matzen, Mildred E.
Mildred E. “Millie” Matzen (nee Smith), age 90, of Mt. Airy, died Monday May 12, 2008 at Heritage Harbour Health & rehabilitation Center in Annapolis, MD. She was born November 5, 1917 in Kessel, West Virginia; she was the daughter of the late David E. Smith and the late Dorothy Smith (nee Warner). As a young woman, Millie moved to Morgantown, West Virginia, to work as a nanny for Dr. and Mrs. Albert Reese, both professors at West Virginia University, who were lifelong friends. For 25 years, she was a furniture salesperson for O.J. Morrison’s and also worked as a part-time florist. Her first marriage to Arthur “Chick” Rose ended in divorce. After marrying Henry C. Matzen, she left Morgantown because of his naval career and lived in Chinhae, South Korea, and Huntington Beach, California. While in Huntington Beach, she discovered a love for painting and studied art at Coastline College with Gary Savage. Millie won numerous awards for her art, including first prize for a painting of the old Huntington Beach Pier destroyed by a hurricane. She was a prolific painter until the end of her life. Other passions included animals, both wild and domestic, vegetable and flower gardening, hosting dinner parties and her grandchildren. She and her husband moved to Mt. Airy 22 years ago to be near their family. She became a member and officer of the Eastern Star Order in Uniontown. Survivors include Henry C. Matzen, her husband of 45 years, daughter Margaret Rose Caro, son-in-law James Caro, granddaughter Christiana Caro, and grandson Peter Caro of Edgewater, MD; sister Audrey Curry, brother Reuben Smith, and sister-in-law Edith Smith of Moorefield, West Virginia; sister Trixie Howdershell of Berryville, Virginia, sister Dorothy Veach, of San Bernardino, California; sister in law Inge Matzen of Schupfheim, Switzerland; and several long and devoted nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A. 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) on Friday from 6-8 PM and Saturday from 2:00-3:00 PM at which time funeral service will begin at 3:00 PM at the funeral home with Pastor Dennis Yocum of Calvary U.M. Church in Mt. Airy officiating. The Plymouth Chapter #41 O.E.S. will have a memorial service at 6:30 PM. Friday at the Funeral Home. Donations in her memory may be made to Susan G. Fitze, John E.
John Edward Fitze, age 64, formerly of Mt. Airy, died Sunday May 18, 2008 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland, MD. He was born February 22, 1944 in Frederick, MD the son of the late Stewart Edward Fitze and the late Grace Elizabeth Fitze (nee Hamilton). He was the husband of the late Cornie Marie Fitze. He was a Landscaper. He was the father of Kevin Mathis of West Friendship. He was the brother of Barbara McDonald of Sykesville, Paul E. Fitze of Mt. Airy, Anna Kilby of Mt. Airy and the late Mary Fitze. Funeral Service will be held Thursday May 22, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) with the Rev. William A. Phebus of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church in West Friendship officiating. Interment True Gospel cemetery, Lisbon, MD. Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.

Parks, Robert E.
Robert E. Parks, age 80 of Mt. Airy, MD, died Monday May 19, 2008 at Kline Hospice House. He was the spouse of Hollis Parks nee (Scott-Smith) of Mt. Airy. He was born September 12, 1927 in Wilkes-Barre, PA the son of the late John Parks and late Lillian Mae Parker Parks. He was a CPA for C. R. Daniels, Inc. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in WWII and a member of the American Legion. Surviving in addition to his wife are Daughters: Kathleen Rohrer of Pembroke Pines, FL, Bonita Soto of Deland, FL, Jeannie Wolfe of Deland, FL.Sons: Robert E. Parks, Jr. of Dunedin, FL, Eric R. Parks stationed in Iraq and Christopher S. Parks of Washington, D.C. Also survived by numerous grandchildren. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Bruckart, John L.
John L. Bruckart, age 84, of Sykesville, formerly of Harrisburg, PA, died Tuesday May 20, 2008 at Golden Living Center, Westminster, MD. He was born November 23, 1923 in Harrisburg, PA the son of the late John L. Bruckart, Sr. and the late Minnie Palmer Bruckart. He was retired from WCMB Radio in Harrisburg, PA as a Sales/announcer. After retiring he worked for Stephenson’s Florist in Harrisburg, PA. He was the husband of Winifred Sweigert Bruckart of Sykesville, MD. He was the father of Lorrie Bruckart of Sykesville. Manahan, Madeline V.
Madeline V. Manahan (nee Shipley), age 86, of Sykesville, died Wednesday May 21, 2008 at Bloom Valley at Misty Ridge Assisted Living in Westminster, MD. She was born April 22, 1922 in Carroll County, Maryland the daughter of the late Donald Columbus Shipley and the late Goldie Viola Haines Shipley. She had been a School Bus Driver, Nurses Aide and was a retiree of Springfield Hospital. In her later years she worked part-time at McDonalds in Eldersburg. She was the wife of Herman Jesse Manahan. Also surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Wayne Ruch, Wendy and Chuck Nightingale all of Sykesville. Grandsons Doug Ruch of Westminster, David Ruch of Frederick, Justin and Matthew Johnson all of Sykesville and granddaughter and husband Donna and Joe Locey of Dallas, Texas, great granddaughters Arden and Betsy Ruch of Mt. Airy and sister Sis Wilson of Sykesville. She was predeceased by Sister Louise Snyder and son Charles “Chuck” Manahan who died in February 1993. Funeral Service will be held Saturday May 24, 2008 at 12:00 Noon at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) with Rev. David Miller of Friendship Baptist Church officiating. Interment Evergreen Memorial Park, Finksburg, MD. Sherman, Charlotte
Charlotte Chappell Sherman, 92 of Carroll Lutheran Village, died May 21, 2008 at The Dove House in Westminster, MD. She was the spouse of the late T. Randolph Sherman, Sr. She was born September 23, 1915 in Clear Lake, Iowa the daughter of the late Edward E. Chappell and the late Idonia Barnes Chappell. She was a homemaker, a Volunteer for Joni and Friends, Concerned Women for America and served on several committees and participated in many projects at Carroll Lutheran Village. Surviving are Children: T. Randolph Sherman, Jr of Florence, KY, Beth Sherman Salvano of Frederick, MD. 10 grandchildren and 5 Great-grandchildren Preceded in death by Daughter Jeannette Owens. The family will receive friends on Sunday May 25, 2008 6 to 8 PM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784. Carmela C. Petras (nee Spina), age 88, formerly of Newark, New Jersey, died on Friday May 23, 2008 at Summerville Assisted Living in Westminster, MD. She was born August 23, 1919 in Italy the daughter of late Dominic Spina and late Catherine Spina. She was the wife of the late Michael P.P. Petras. She was a housewife. She worked in Sales in Department Stores. She enjoyed reading, gardening with flowers and plants. She was the mother of Suzanne M. Dicken and husband James of Westminster and Diane K. Gardiner and husband Joseph of North Carolina. Loving grandmother of Matthew E. and Lauren M. Dicken and Paul and Danielle Gardiner. Loving great grandmother of Katelyn Brianna Dicken. Predeceased by 3 brothers. Funeral Liturgy (MASS) will be held Wednesday May 28, 2008 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Catholic Church (Sullivan Hall) in Libertytown with Fr. John Dietzenbach officiating.
