Snowden, Kathleen I.
Mrs. Kathleen Irene Snowden died Thursday, October 16, 2008 at her home in New Market. Born in Mount Airy on August 1, 1933, she was the wife of the late William Kenneth Snowden and daughter of the late Grafton Ignatius and Goldie Irene Dorsey. Mrs. Snowden was a member of Simpson Christian Community Church, New Market. She retired from the National Institutes of Health after 42 years of service as a branch chief. Kathleen was the first African-American woman elected to the New Market Town Council. She was an avid collector of black history memorabilia and was the author of four books The Town of New Market Along the Old National Road, History of the African American School, History of the African American Church and Through the Years with Edward ‘Jack’ and Martha White. Mrs. Snowden owned and operated the African-American Specialty Shop in New Market in the early 1970s. She is survived by a son, Steve Morrison, Frederick; granddaughter Natasha Morrison, Westminster; one sister, Toni Dorsey, Frederick; three brothers, Grafton Dorsey, Woodbine; Asa Dorsey, Gaithersburg; Larry Dorsey, Halifax, Virginia; devoted niece, Midge Thomas, Mount Airy; and devoted nephews Jeffrey Morrison, New Market; Randy Snowden, Frederick; and Monroe Morrison, Westminster. She was preceded in death by five sisters Betty Wilson, Rose Warden, Sandra Morrison, Penny Ziegler, and Dorothy Voorhees and four brothers, Alvin Dorsey, Buddy Dorsey, Hildred Dorsey, Herman Dorsey, and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday October 19 and on Monday October 20 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home, 1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield, MD 21784. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday October 20 at the funeral home with Pastor Sherman Mason officiating. Interment will be at Simpson Christian Community Church, New Market. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Kathleen Snowden to Simpson Christian Community Church, New Market, MD 21774

Smith, Ronald J.
MACM Ronald James Smith, USN-RET, age 69, of Randallstown, died Sunday October 19, 2008 at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, MD. He was born October 8, 1939 in Oneida, New York, the son of the late Jerald Smith and the late Alberta Wheedon Smith. He was the husband of Diane P. Davis. He was a Master Chief Master-At-Arms in The US Navy serving 30 years. He also worked as a security officer in various hospitals. He was the brother of Robert, Raymond and Jerald Smith and the late Anna Margaret Smith. Friends may call the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Interment Garrison Forest Veterans cemetery. Bledsoe, Mary E.
Mary Elizabeth (Grimes) Bledsoe 67 of Mt. Airy, MD, died suddenly at Carroll Hospital Center. She was the spouse Michael Edward Bledsoe, Sr. of Mt. Airy, MD. She was born March 16, 1941 in Damascus, MD. The daughter of the late Guy Edward Grimes and late Irene Grimes. She was a retired Clerk for the State of MD. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Surviving in addition to her husband at Son and Daughter-in-law Michael E. Bledsoe, Jr. and Melinda of Westminster. Daughter Tana Hawkins of Westminster, Sister Peggy Hawkins of PA. Grandchildren Luke, Alex and Nicole. Funeral Services will be held Saturday October 25, 2008 10 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784 with Rev. Joseph Duke of Life Point Church officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville, MD. Manger, Cordelia
Cordelia Manger departed this life quietly early on Saturday, October 18 2008 in Baltimore, MD. She was born June 4, 1917 in Colby Wisconsin, the first child of the Rev. Albert and Sarah Scherry. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter C. Manger. Her early life was spent in Orrville, OH where she completed her secondary education. She graduated in 1939 from the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH, where she majored in Speech and English. After graduation she taught English and Speech in several high schools in Northeastern and Southwestern OH. With the outbreak of WWII, she joined the US Signal Corps and quickly became Chief of Receiving for Patterson Air Service Command at Wright Field near Dayton, OH. Through her work in settling Air Force contracts with civilian companies, she met Walter Manger and they were married on November 25, 1943. The couple moved to Baltimore, where Walter was employed by Bendix Corporation, a supplier of radios and other electronics for the US Army Air Corps. Baltimore was to be their life-long home, living in the suburbs of Pikesville, Essex and finally Catonsville, her home for 48 years. As her two sons grew older Cordelia returned to teaching initially as a substitute and then full-time at Catonsville Junior High School, where she was well-known for her classes in English and American history, finally retiring in 1972. Cordelia was a life lone Presbyterian and very active in the church life and mission of Catonsville Presbyterian Church, which she joined in 1950. After Walters death in 1974 she became a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and worked full-time and then part-time at the Presbyterian Home of MD in Towson through the 1980’s. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a giving, caring person, particularly by her family, who will miss her love and devotion so freely given during her life. Surviving her are Sister Virginia Jones of Wilmington, NC 2 Sons Walter L. Manger of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Thomas L. Manger of Westminster, MD, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by brother Leroy Scherry and Sister Eleanor Job. Inurnment will be with the other members of her family, including her parents and brother in Magley Indiana. A Memorial Service will take place Saturday November 15, 12:00 Noon at Catonsville Presbyterian Church, 1400 Frederick Rd. Catonsville, MD 21228. The family requests any memorial gifts be sent to Catonsville Presbyterian Church.

Wagner, George E.
George Everett Wagner (affectionately known as Pud and Pap Pap) died peacefully on November 02, 2008, at his home near Taylorsville, Mt. Airy, MD. He was born March 31, 1922, in Unionville, Frederick County, MD. He was the son of the late Charles and Esther Wagner of Misty Meadow Farm, Mt. Airy, MD. He was the devoted husband of Doris Walkling Wagner, his wife of thirty years. Surviving in addition to his wife, is his sister, Gloria Mae Bowen and spouse Harry Bowen of Sachse, Texas. He is survived by his nieces, Connie and Barbara and their children, and extended family of stepchildren, step grandchildren, and step great grandchildren. He was a retired dairy farmer on the farm where he had lived for 80 years. Mr. Wagner started fox chasing at five years of age until he retired in 2006 as Master Emeritus of the Carrollton Hounds in Carroll County. As a child he rode his horse under the tutelage of his uncle, Pete Moxley, who taught him the skills of the fox chase and also instilled the joys of the sport as well as knowledge of the countryside. He developed his own pack of foxhounds and spent most of his teen years, continuing his knowledge of horses and hounds, with Frank Barnes who was well known for his ability as a huntsman. In the early 1960’s he was hired as huntsman for the Redland Hunt in Montgomery County. His reputation as an expert judge of foxhounds became well known. Along with Joseph Hutton of Brookfield, he helped the Goshen Hunt establish a pack of notable fox hounds. He was often invited as part of a team of judges of fox hounds and was host to the MD Foxhunters Association which held several meets at Misty Meadow Farm. He was active in the Taylorsville Hunt Club where he held offices as President, Master of Hounds, and Huntsman. About thirty years ago, he and Colonel Donald Thackeray of New Windsor, re-activated the old Carrollton Hounds. They also developed a fine pack of fox hounds and continued the tradition of fox chasing which is part of the Carroll County countryside today. A private Mass will be held later at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church, Manchester, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Carroll Hospice, Inc. 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157 or the Carroll County Humane Society.

Whittington, Jamison A.
Jamison Ann Elizabeth Whittington, 4 of Mt. Airy, MD, died Monday November 3, 2008 at Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was born November 3, 2004 in Westminster, MD the daughter of John Timothy Whittington and Jennifer Lee (Ratliff) Whittingham. She loved going to school and playing with her brothers. She was the loving Granddaughter of Barbara and Billy Kempton of Westminster, Jack and Teresa Whittington of Sarasota, FL, the late Betty Whittington. Also survived by brothers; J.T. and Jakob Whittington of Mt. Airy, MD, Uncle Catch Kempton of Westminster and Aunt Lauren Ratliff of Westminster, MD. Memorial Services will be conducted at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784 at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 8, 2008. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday November 7, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Memorial Contributions may be made to Children’s Hospital, 111 Michigan Ave. N.W. Porter, Hilda R.
Mrs. Hilda R. Porter, 85 of Mt. Airy, died Wednesday November 5, 2008 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was born October 1, 1923 in Sykesville, MD the daughter of the late Felix and late Minnie (Miller) Linton. She was the wife of the late William E. Porter who predeceased her in 2000. Mrs. Porter was a member of the Howard Chapel-Ridgeville United Methodist Church. She retired from the National Cancer Institute in 1998 where she worked as a Laboratory Technician. Friends and family will remember her passion, if not expertise in Duckpin Bowling. Mrs. Porter is survived by her children and their spouses, Judith and Keith McGee, Sr. of Sykesville, David and Sharon Porter of Monrovia, Jennifer and Chuck Norris of Frederick and Phillip and Charlotte Porter of Mt. Airy, She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great -grandchildren. A Brother and Sister-in-law Irvin and Ruby Linton and sister-in-law and her husband Dorothy and Richard Davis. Preceded in death by brothers George and Thomas Linton and Sister Dorothy Burdette. Funeral Services will be Sunday November 9, 2008 1:00 PM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784 Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery, Mt. Airy, MD. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM.

Conaway, Jay W.
Jay William Conaway 84 of Fairhaven, Sykesville, MD, died Wednesday November 5, 2008 at the Dove House in Westminster. Mr. Conaway was born September 15, 1924 in Winfield, MD the son of the late Jay and Amy Conaway. He was the husband of 62 years to Ethel L. Conaway. After graduation from Sykesville High School he was drafted and served in the 14th Air Force in China/India/Burma Theatre under General Chennault. He owned and operated Conaway General Store in Winfield for 25 years. After giving up the store he became a rural mail carrier for Sykesville Post Office from which he retired. He was a member of Winfield Bible Chapel and the Ebenezer Owls Senior Group. He was a former Charter Member of the Taylorsville-Winfield Lions Club and the Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Company. Surviving in addition to his wife are Son and daughter-in-law Gary and Barbara Conaway of Silver Spring, MD Grandson Benjamin Conaway of Cherry Hill, NJ Granddaughter Amy Conaway of Chicago, IL. He is predeceased by sister Pearl Myers and brother LeRoy Conaway. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday November 11, 2008 11 Am at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A. 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784 with Pastor Kim Gee of Winfield, Bible Chapel officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery, Woodbine, MD. Churchill, Paul G.
Paul Gabriel Churchill, 63 of Eldersburg, MD, died Friday November 7, 2008 at his home. He was the spouse of the late Jo Ann (Grammer) Churchill. Who passed away in 1989. He was born July 31, 1945 in Washington, D.C. The son of the late Murray V. Churchill and Lucille (Craven) Churchill. Mr. Churchill was a graduate of The University of MD and held a Masters Degree from Towson State University. He was a member of Pershing Rifles He was co-founder of Watson’s Tin Box, He was also a member Baker St. Irregulars. He began his teaching career at Longfellow Elementary School and later taught at Centennial High School and most recently was a Latin Adjunct Professor at Hood College in Frederick. Mr. Churchill taught several Sherlock Homes Appreciation classes in the local region. Surviving are Sons and Daughter-in-laws Mark G. and Susan Churchill of Lincoln, Nebraska, Gregory and Danielle Churchill of Parkville, MD. Brothers: James R. Churchill of Alexandria, VA and David M. Churchill and wife Susan of Frederick, MD, Granddaughter, Ellie Churchill of Nebraska. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Doris E. Saffron (nee Euler), age 89, of Winfield, died Friday November 14, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital. She was born June 13, 1919 in Rockdale, MD the daughter of the late John Wesley Euler and the late Edith May Clutz Euler. She Graduated from Catonsville High School. She was a retired Secretary for Principals for the Baltimore County Board of Education. She was a lifetime member of Salem U.M. Church in Hebbville. She was the wife of the late Robert J. “Bob” Saffron. She was the mother of Barbara L. Snyder of Fenwick Island, DE and her late husband Ronald, and Suzanne and her husband Jerry W. Linville of Winfield. She was the sister of John C. Euler and sister in law Justine of Ocean City, MD. Cherished grandmother of Laurie Orfanidis, Wendy Higgins, Jon Linville and their spouses. Also survived by 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Service will be held Monday November 17, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA 1212 W. Armfield, Mary E.
Mary Elizabeth (Conaway) Armfield 86 of Mt. Airy, MD, died Saturday November 15, 2008 at Lorien of Taneytown. She was the spouse of the late Joseph Thomas Armfield and a life long resident of Mt. Airy. Mrs. Armfield was born April 24, 1922 in Mt. Airy, MD the daughter of the late Thomas A. and late Nettie V. Conaway. She graduated from the Mt. Airy High School Class of 1939. After graduation she completed her training at the Maison Frederick School of Beauty Culture in Baltimore and worked as a beautician at the Edgemore Beauty Salon in Bethesda. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy, MD. She is survived by children and their spouses Jane and Larry Haines and J. Thomas and Donna Armfield of Westminster and Patricia Ann Armfield of Mt. Airy. Grandchildren and Spouses, Garry and Kelley Haines, Kevin and Sherri Haines, and Matthew Haines of Westminster, Levi and LeighAnn Haines of Hanover, PA, Greg and Amanda Armfield of Leesburg, VA, Leslie and Sam Lieb of Hanover, PA, Lisa and Kenneth Watson of Middle Run, Theresa Gue of AZ, Cheri and Randy Ford of Littlestown, PA, Steve and Jessica Doxzen of Middletown, MD, Shaun Salmon of Florida and Elisabeth Salmon of Mt.
