Graves-Baker, Sara
Sara Graves-Baker died on Friday, October 20, 2006 at Westminster–Canterbury in Virginia Beach, VA. She was born on August 26, 1912 in College Park, GA to R. Jefferson Graves, Sr. and Hattie Allen Graves. In 1918, her family moved to Baltimore, MD where she graduated from Forest Park High School in 1930. She married Lloyd Baker on December 7, 1935. After her husband's retirement in 1963, they built a home on the Baker farm near Mt. Airy, MD where they lived until 1983 when they moved to Westminster-Canterbury in Virginia Beach. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother R. Jefferson Graves, Jr., and sisters, Marie Graves and Dorothy Bratton. She is survived by her son, John Baker and his wife Sharon of Newport News, VA; daughter, Donna Baker and her husband Blake of Carlisle, MA; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, three nieces and one nephew. A graveside service will be conducted at Mt. Olive cemetery, Mt. Airy, MD on Saturday, October 28 at 11:00 AM with her grandson Andrew Baker officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, c/o Linda Conaway, Treasurer, 3245 Ridge Road, Westminster, MD 21157.

Basil, Irving T.
Rev. Irving Thomas Basil, Sr. age 81, of Pikesville, completed his work here on earth after a two year battle with cancer on Sunday October 22, 2006 at home. Entering Heaven he finally met his Savior face to face. He was welcomed by his parents, other family, friends and heavenly hosts who rejoiced upon his arrival. Irving leaves behind Jane Stuart (nee Parker) Basil his beloved wife of 54 years; there dearly loved children, son Irving Thomas Basil, Jr. of Arnold, MD, daughters Lori Brown of Eldersburg and Leslie Payne of Annapolis; and their spouses, nine precious grandchildren, and his beloved sister Lillian Klein of Baltimore. One day they will all be together again in Glory. He was born September 3, 1925 in Baltimore, MD the son of the late Irving Thomas Basil and the late Mary Ethel Basil (nee Miller). He served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 WWII Pacific Theater. He was an Electrical Engineer for Westinghouse Electric Co. and retired in 1985. He was a retired Pastor at Wilton Heights U.M. Church in Baltimore and Mt. Zion U.M. Church in Finksburg. Family and friends may call at Milford Mill U.M. Church, 915 Milford Mill Road, Pikesville, MD on Friday 3-5 & 7-9 PM. Life celebration service at Milford Mill U.M. Church on Sat. October 28, 2006 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Shari McCourt of Milford Mill U.M. Church in Pikesville and Rev. Larry Plymire and Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Interment Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville, MD. A Reception will follow interment at the church. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to: Milford Mill U.M. Hogan, John W.
John William Hogan, 86 of Westminster formerly of Randallstown, MD, died Wednesday October 25, 2006 at Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center. He was the spouse of Mary Regina Fleming Hogan of Westminster. He was born September 18, 1920 in Hartford City, Indiana the son of the of the late Wilbur Hogan and Merle Woolard Hogan. He was retired after 22 years with the Social Security Administration. Prior to that he had worked for several different breweries. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific in the Army Air Corp. Mr. Hogan was a Eucharistic Minister and CCD Teacher at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church. Surviving in addition to his spouse are Children and their spouses; John Michael and Deborah L. Hogan of Reisterstown, Kevin Alan and Karen Hogan of Westminster, Mark Joseph Hogan of Westminster, Brian Patrick and Deborah A. Hogan of Hanover, PA. Grandchildren: Erin, Kayla, Jamie, Samantha, Brianna, Abby, Alyssa, Daniel, Taylor and Riley. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Liturgy(Mass) will be said on Monday October 30, 2006 9AM at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, 9533 liberty Rd. Randallstown, MD 21133. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville, MD. The Family will receive friends at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM with a Rosary Service at 7:30 PM. Eskite, Wilbur H.
Wilbur Henry Eskite, 78 of Mt. Airy, MD, died Friday, October 27, 2006 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the spouse of 53 years to Betty Cameron Eskite. Mr. Eskite was born May 19, 1928 in Gallup, New Mexico the son of the late Wilbur Henry Eskite, Sr. and Ruth Burroughs Eskite. Mr. Eskite Served from 1946 to 1948 in the US Army, as a Military Police Officer in occupied Japan. He attended George Washington University, graduating in 1953 with a degree in Civil Engineering and then began what was a long and distinguished career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration retiring in 1987. After retiring he enjoyed hobbies such as woodworking, genealogy and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving in addition to his wife are Son and Daughter-in-law Richard C. and Juliann Eskite of Pacifica, CA, Daughter and Son-in-law Susan J. Eskite and Barry Chenkin of Gaithersburg, MD, Son and Daughter-in-law Ross A and Janice Eskite of Monrovia, MD. Grandchildren Cameron, Colin and Meagan Eskite and Step-grandchildren Shelby Sites, Hollis and Griffin Doyle. He is preceded in death by his brother, R. Glenn Eskite. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2006 7 PM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home, 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784 with the family receiving friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM. Interment Private. Purcell, Lillian G.
Lillian Gertrude Purcell, 80 of Mt. Airy, MD formerly of Medford, MA, died October 31, 2006 at Our Family Assisted Living in Mt. Airy, MD. She was born September 24, 1926 in Lynn, MA, the daughter of the late Timothy Bernard Purcell and Mary Gertrude (Surette) Purcell. A devoted mother of five through her marriage to John T. Gamrecki (later divorced); son John Jr. predeceased her in 1988. She is survived by Charles in Massachusetts, Sandra Diane Blond and her husband Michael in Maryland, William in Massachusetts, and Richard and his wife Cheryl of New Hampshire, as well as her beloved brother Richard and his wife Barbara of Malden, MA. Ms. Purcell lived in Medford from 1966-1989, moved to New Hampshire upon retirement from Verizon in 1989, then moved to Maryland in 2004. A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Raphael Parish, 512 High St., Medford, MA on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.

Johnson, Rose G.
Rose Gertrude Johnson (Earnest), age 77, of Mt. Airy formerly of Wheaton, died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at Kline Hospice House. She was born August 18, 1929 in Washington, DC the daughter of the late Phillip Earnest and the late Rose Earnest (nee Hogan). She was a Homemaker, She enjoyed Crocheting and Knitting and loved reading. She was the wife of Calvin A. Johnson of Mt. Airy married December 18, 1947. She was the mother of Michael A. “Mike” Johnson, Sr. of Wheaton, Jeffrey A. “Jeff” Johnson of Mt. Airy, Sharon L. Azoulay of Germantown, and Pamela J. Harris of Mt. Airy. She was the sister of Robert and Russell Earnest, the late Phillip J. Earnest “Buddy”, and the late Phyllis Jennerett. Grandchildren Michael A. Johnson, Jr. Jessica Doyle, Amanda Harris, Ariella Azoulay, Sara Azoulay, Zachery Harris, Kobi Azoulay. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday November 11, 2006 10 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School). Lyons, Wendy J.
Wendy Jean Lyons, 69 of Westminster, MD, died November 7, 2006 at Carroll Hospital Center. She was born February 2, 1937 in Buffalo, NY the daughter of the late Paul Albert Blum and late Margaret Mary Raymond Blum. Ms. Lyons was the owner of American Space Planners, Inc. She was a member of The Carrollton Hounds (a fox hunting Club) and a member of the Maryland Thoroughbred Breeder’s Assoc. Surviving her are Daughter and Son-in-law Susan Julia and Jay Haddaway, Jr. of Westminster, Daughter: Margaret”Peggy” DiDonenico of York, PA. Sister: Donna Conmy of Madison, NJ Grandchildren: Edward ”JR” Haddaway, Julie Haddaway, Tom Ingnam and Sheridan DiDonenico. She was also survived by numerous niece and nephews. Catholic Prayers will be said on Friday November 10, 2006 10 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784. Shifflett, Sidney M.
Sidney Mae Shifflett (nee Zepp), age 51, of Union Bridge, died Saturday, November 11, 2006 at her home. She was born June 12, 1955 in Sykesville, MD the daughter of Elza Mae Zepp of Sykesville and the late Milton Leroy Zepp. She was a Bookkeeper for Hankey’s Radio, Inc. in Frederick. She was the wife of Harvey Lee Shifflett of Union Bridge. She was the mother of David L. Phelps and wife Tracy M. of Union Bridge. She was the sister of Gail Wight of Gamber. Loving grandmother of David Joseph Phelps. Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Jones, Jack W.
Jack W. Jones, age 83, of Westminster, died Wednesday November 15, 2006 at Lorien Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Taneytown, MD. He was born February 18, 1923 in Kentucky the son of the late Walter S. Jones and the late Ella F. Jones (nee Goley). He was a member of Elders Baptist Church in Eldersburg. He served in the US Marines from 1941-1945. He was a former member and Deacon of Viers Mill Baptist Church in Silver Spring. He was a Deli Manager for Giant Food. He also worked in transportation in the Montgomery County Public Schools. He was the husband of the late Carlos Jean Jones (nee Kelly). He was the father of Mary Ann Stockslager of Westminster. He was the brother of Paul and Barbara Jones of FL and the late Joyce Brown and the late Anna Matthews. Also survived by faithful sister-in-law Rosemary Jones. He was the grandfather of Scott & Heather Stockslager of Mechanicsville, MD and Todd Stockslager & Fiancée Selena Friedberg of Rockville. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Service will be held Monday November 20, 2006 at 10:00 AM at Elders Baptist Church, 1216 Liberty Road, Eldersburg, with the Rev. Jim Edmonson officiating. Pearl, George W.
George “William” Pearl, age 85, of Annapolis, died Thursday November 16, 2006 at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis. MD. He was born May 20, 1921 in Hagerstown, MD the son of the late Anna Mae Pearl. He was a Sales Manager and Insurance Salesman for Monumental Life Insurance Company for 15 years retired in 1982. He was a Cub Master for Cub Scouts. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and woodworking. He was the husband of Helen Virginia Hartman Pearl. He was the father of Charles W. Pearl of Lusby, MD and Michael W. Pearl of Annapolis, MD. He was the brother of Catherine Connelly of Baltimore. Also survived by two granddaughters and three great granddaughters and a very close friend Paul Rippeon. Graveside service will be held Monday, November 20, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren cemetery 13356 Glissans Mill Road, Mt. Airy, MD 21771, with Rev. L. Ross Kirk officiating.

David Wayne Guynn, 45 of Woodbine, MD, died Saturday, November 18, 2006. He was born July 19, 1961 in Frederick, MD. Mr. Guynn was the Son of Riley Howard and Margaret Tharon Hurst Guynn of Woodbine. He was a self-employed in Trucking. Mr. Guynn was a graduate of South Carroll High School and also graduated from the Diesel Institute of America. He was Member of Calvary Lutheran Church and a Lifetime member of the 2 Cylinder Club. Brother of Margaret Anne and Husband Alan Fink of Westminster and Eveline Kay and Husband George Shipley of Woodbine and the late Jesse Howard “Jay” Guynn. Uncle of Jerome Guynn, Sierra Guynn Jessee, Kimberly Hammer, Jason Shipley and Matthew Shipley. The family will receive friends on Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784. Ruth Larimore Swanson, 83 of Woodbine, MD, died Monday November 20, 2006 at her home in Woodbine. She was the spouse of the late Emil Edwin “Buddy” Swanson. She was born November 1, 1923 in Mullins, South Carolina the daughter of the late Marvin and late Liller Larimore. Mrs. Swanson was retired from Springfield State Hospital where she worked as a nurse she also had previously worked at Golden Age Guest Home and for Geico Insurance Company. She was a member of Morgan Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Swanson was an excellent Grandmother, Great-grandmother, Mother and wife. Surviving her are Daughter: Brenda Pennington of Kennesaw, GA. Daughter and Son-in-law: Yolonda and Jean-Louis Pujot of Sterling, VA. Grandchildren: Michael Pennington of Marietta, GA and Courtney Ayers of Marietta, GA. Great-Granddaughter: Cora Ayers.
