JOHN ANDREW GOTSCHALL, 47, MANAGER, DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION GROUP, WESTVACO CORP.

John Gotschall, a civil engineer with Westvaco Corp. for 22 years, died Friday, Feb. 7, after a 7-year battle with brain cancer. He was 47. He leaves behind Lisa, his wife of 19 years and two sons, Andrew, 14, and Christopher, 13.

John, one of five children born to Miriam and Charles Gotschall of Shaker Hts. Ohio, was born in Cleveland, Dec. 14, 1955. The family lived in Paris from 1966-1968 and traveled throughout Europe. On their return to the states, the family moved to Rowayton, Conn., and Sudbury, Mass., where John graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury High School in 1974.

An exceptional baseball player, John made the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Jr. Varsity team his freshman year and varsity thereafter. During his sophomore year, he met his wife, Lisa Waleryszak, a freshman at Russell Sage College, at a party at his fraternity, Phi Kappa Tau. John graduated from RPI in 1979 after obtaining his masters in Structural Design Engineering.

Immediately upon graduation, John joined Westvaco as an engineer in the Corporate Engineering Dept. He was promoted many times in his 22-year career with the company, ultimately becoming the Manager of the Design & Construction Group, Corporate Engineering.

John and Lisa married in 1983 and welcomed their son Andrew in 1988 and Christopher in 1990, when the family resided in Trumbull, Conn. In 1990, they moved to West Friendship, Md.

In January of 1996, John was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 40, when his sons Andrew and Christopher were 6 and 8 respectively. At that time, Johns Hopkins, through the National Institute of Health, was conducting the second phase of a radical new treatment of brain tumors using Diphtheria toxin. John was immediately inducted into the program, which is credited with giving him an additional 6 years of life. John was asked to report on his treatment in a segment of the Nightly News with Dan Rather in 1997.

In the 7 years between his initial diagnosis and his death, John was able to watch his sons grow and develop the same exceptional academic, social and athletic skills he himself had shown throughout his life. The family traveled extensively-to Hawaii on a trip generously donated by a member of his church, Europe, the American west and Mexico. He also was able to celebrate many holidays with his extended family, including his mother and father's 50th wedding anniversary, Thanksgivings, Christmases, birthdays, baptisms, graduations and more.

In addition to his wife Lisa and sons Andrew and Christopher, John is loved and will be missed by his mother and father and four brothers and sisters-Sally, Barbara, Tom and Beth-their spouses George, Steven, JoAnn and Michael, and his nine neices and nephews on the Gotschall side. He is loved and will be missed by his mother- and father-in-law, Edwin and Bertha Waleryszak of Ellington, Conn.; brothers-in-law Edwin and David, and their wives, Marie and Donna, and Edwin and Marie's daughters, Lauren and Andrea.

A service for John will be held at 12:00 noon, Saturday, Feb. 15 at St. Louis Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, Md. A reception immediately follows at Claret Hall, 6020 Daybreak Circle, Clarksville, Md.
