Margaret R. Byrd

Mrs. Margaret R. Byrd, 88, of Dawsonville, died on Monday March 1, 2004 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.
She was the wife of the late Joseph Byrd.
Born on June 26, 1915 in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John William and Pearl Shifflett Rosenberger.
Mrs. Byrd served in the United States Navy during WWII as a Pharmacist's Mate First Class.
Surviving is one brother, Dr. Gordon S. Rosenberger of Rockville, 1 nephew and 6 nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M.on Thursday March 2 at the Darnestown Presbyterian Church, 15120 Turkey Foot Rd., Gaithersburg, MD. A graveside service will follow at the Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville, MD.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorials and Tributes Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216
Arrangements handled by Hilton Funeral Home.

Stanley L. Umstead

Mr. Stanley L. Umstead, 85, of Beallsville, died on Sunday February 29, 2004 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick.
He was the husband of Rebecca Umstead.
Born on January 6, 1919 he was the son of the late Maurice and Bertha King Umstead.
Mr. Umstead served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII and operated a service station in Poolesville for many years.
Surviving besides his wife is one daughter, Barbara Hamilton of Colorado, one son, Lee Umstead of Bowie, three grandchildren; Amy Hamilton, Katie and Austin Umstead and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Umstead was preceded in death by four brothers; Marvin, Russell, Gordon and Maurice Umstead and one sister, Marion Coblentz.
There will be no visitation and inurnment will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Stanley's name to the Parkinsonian Society of Greater Washington, (PSGW), Francoise Kantor, Treasure, P.O. Box 553, Garrett Park, Maryland 20896.

Charles G. Cooley

Mr. Charles Garrett Cooley, 70, of Clarksburg, died Friday February 20, 2004 at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick after a short illness.
He was the husband of Elva Raye Cooley. They would have celebrated their 54th anniversary in May.
Born in Barnesville on July 31, 1933, he was the son of the late Garrett and Nellie Cooley.
Mr. Cooley owned and operated his own business, Cooley Construction, Inc., building numerous homes in the Montgomery and Frederick County areas for fifty years. He was known by all as a master craftsman who loved his work. He helped others in need and radiated unconditional love and in return was loved by all.
Mr. Cooley was a member of the Hyattstown United Methodist Church and held many offices over the years. He was a member of the Farmers Cooperative of Frederick, Montgomery County Farm Bureau, Upper Montgomery County Fire Department, past member of the Carroll Manor Lions Club and a registered building representative for North American Homes.
Surviving besides his wife is a daughter, Diane Beall and husband Clark of Clarksburg and a granddaughter, Vicki Stokes and husband Michael of Poolesville.
The family will receive friends on Monday February 23 from 5-9 PM at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109), Barnesville, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday February 24 at 11 AM.
Rev. Wayne Roberson, friend and pastor of the Dawsonville Mennonite Church will officiate.
Bearers will be Jerry and Ronald Miles, Charles Elgin, Jack Cooley, Frank, Robert, William and Jamie Jamison.
Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Frederick.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mr. Cooley's name to the Maryland Sheriffs' Youth Ranch, P.O. Box 42, Buckeystown, Maryland 21717.

Cornelius J. "Buster" DeVries, Jr.

Mr. Cornelius J. "Buster" DeVries, Jr., 71, of Dickerson, died on Saturday June 5, 2004 at the Casey House in Rockville.
He was the husband of Miki.
Born on April 30, 1933 in Silver Spring, he was the son of the late Cornelius John and Thelma Louise Raynor DeVries, Sr.
Mr. DeVires was a retired Montgomery County Police Canine Officer where he served 22 years.
Surviving besides his wife are his children; Christina, Barbara Lyn, John, Diane, Cathy, one brother; David and grandchildren.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday June 9 from 3-5 and 7-9 PM at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, (Rt. 109), Barnesville, MD
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Thursday June 10 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, Barnesville, MD.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to NIH, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, 10 Center Drive, Bethesda, MD 20892.

James I. Mullen

Mr. James I. Mullen, "Doc", age 65, of Rockville, Maryland, died on Friday May 28, 2004 at his residence.
He was the husband of Guvher Mullen.
Born on April 5, 1939 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late James Thomas and Catherine Swink Mullen.
Mr. Mullen was a Mason with Lodge #194, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Surviving besides his wife are two children; Laura L. Mullen of Rockville, MD, James I. Mullen, II of Wheaton, MD, two brothers; Thomas Mullen of Washington, PA, Larry Mullen of Connellsville, PA, four sisters; Janet Mulac of Vanderbilt, PA, Patricia Lee, Elida Micklo and Mary Zundell all of Connellsville, PA.
He will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Mr. Mullen was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Williams.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday July 10 at the Mount Olive Church, Connellsville, PA.
In lieu of flower donations may be made to the Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Drive, Rockville, Maryland 20850.

Nellie N. Rutter

Mrs. Nellie Nancy Beall Rutter, 92, of Poolesville, died on Thursday May 20, 2004 at the Manor Care Nursing Facility in Bethesda.
She was the wife of the late Charles H. Rutter who died on July 13, 1966.
Born on March 13, 1912 in Poolesville, she was the daughter of the late Marion and Pearl Astlin Beall.
Mrs. Rutter resided at Edwards Ferry during her childhood, where her father was a lockkeeper. She was a member of the Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church, the Monocacy Homemakers, the Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Sunshine Class (Owens Park).
She is survived by one son, Charles D. Rutter and his wife Jean of Damascus; three grandchildren, Steven, Cindy and Ryan Rutter; four great grandchildren, Alicia, Steven, Ashley Rose, Zachary Ryan and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Philip Rutter, four sisters, Edna Poole, Anna Poole, Clara Bready, Myrtle Remsburg and two brothers, Raymond (Buck) Beall and Marion (Buster) Beall.
The family will receive friends on Sunday May 23 from 6-9 PM at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109), Barnesville where funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Monday May 24.
Rev. Ken Fell of the Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church will officiate.
Interment will be in Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville.

Vincent S. Scopi

Mr. Vincent S. Scopi, 83, of Kensington, MD, formerly of Washington, DC died on Tuesday May 18, 2004 at Suburban Hospital in Silver Spring, MD.
Born on November 19, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA he was the son of the late John D. and Josephine Nardiello Scopi, Sr.
Graveside services will be private.

Modelle Bernice Viviani

Mrs. Modelle Bernice Viviani, 85, of Annapolis, Maryland, formerly of Columbus, Iowa, died on Sunday May 16, 2004 in Annapolis.
She was the wife of the late Anthony Viviani.
Born on September 20, 1918 in Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Moses and Lela Williamson Harbison.
Surviving are her children; Deborah M. Viviani, Diane L. Jensen, Donna L. Hilton, Denise V. Dallatore, Toni V. King and Yvette Viviani, and seven grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday May 19 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, Barnesville, MD.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cape St. Claire Volunteer Fire Company, 1411 Cape St. Claire Road, Cape St. Claire, MD 21401.

Susan Pignone

Mrs. Susan Anne Riley Pignone, 61, of Barnesville, died on Wednesday August 4, 2004 at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD.
She was the loving wife of Tom Pignone.
Born on June 10, 1943 in Washington, DC she was the daughter of the late Donald and Laura Davis Riley.
Mrs. Pignone was a member of the Service Employees International Union, volunteered and tutored at Waters Landing Elementary School in Germantown, was an avid artist, photographer and gardener. She won many awards at the Montgomery County Fair with her art and photos.
Surviving besides her husband are her 4 children; Margie Williams and husband Mason of Woodsboro, Laura Baker and husband Eric of Pennsylvania, Don Pignone and fiancé Krista Walsh of Colorado, Mark Pignone also of Colorado, two sisters; Kathleen Stecklein of Potomac, Jean Smith of Hyattsville, 5 grandchildren; Christopher and Daniel Williams, Kaitlyn, Ryan and Cassie Baker.
Family will receive friends on Sunday August 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, (Rt. 109), Barnesville, MD . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Monday August 9 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, Barnesville, MD.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Ralph C. Rowe

Mr. Ralph C. Rowe, 82, of Sarasota, FL, died on Saturday July 31, 2004 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, MD.
He was the husband of Janice L. Rowe.
Born on October 25, 1921 in Iowa, he was the son of the late Clarmont R. and Anne B. Rowe.
Mr. Rowe was a member of the Covenant Life Presbyterian Church in Sarasota, Church of the Redeemer in Gaithersburg, MD and a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.
Surviving besides his wife is one son, Mark R. Rowe and wife Bobbi of Damascus, MD, one sister, Anita Anderson of Washington, 3 grandchildren; Samuel, Elizabeth, Daniel and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters; Amzel and Beulah.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday August 5, 2004 at the Church of the Redeemer, 19425 Woodfield Rd., Gaithersburg, MD 20879 with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in Quantico National cemetery, Triangle, VA at 1:30PM.
