He served in the Signal Corps upon graduation from Officer Candidate School and the Signal School at Ft. Monmouth, N.J. Following an initial assignment in Hawaii, he commanded the 325th Signal Service Company on Saipan in the South Pacific. Saipan was a relay station for the main war effort in the Pacific and his unit was responsible for relaying all message and radio communications from General MacArthur's headquarters back to Pacific headquarters in Hawaii. Hal recalled that he and his troops would always ask "What's Mac saying today?"
After the war, Hal moved to Washington, D.C. and attended The George Washington University Law School. In 1956, he became one of the founding partners of the law firm, Howrey, Simon, Baker and Murchison, which was to become the world's leading antitrust litigation firm, known today as Howrey. Hal maintained a lifelong curiosity and enjoyed many and varied interests, from horticulture to antiques. He was widely respected among colleagues and friends. He was elected to the American College of Trial Lawyers and also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of The George Washington University, where he chaired the Medical Committee.
He retired from his firm in the mid-1980s to his farm in Boyds, Maryland where he became a highly respected representative of the farming community and Montgomery County's Agriculture Reserve. In addition to his farming pursuits at Susanna Farm, he developed one of the region's finest collections of dwarf and unusual confers. He sought out the finest and most unusual evergreen trees from around the country and shared his passion with visitors and friends alike. Hal also enjoyed antiques and for many years owned the Olney Antique Mart in Olney, Maryland where he was an avid collector and authority on American Art Pottery.
A passionate defender of farming and Montgomery County's Agricultural Reserve, he fought for the preservation of farmland and served on the Board and as president of Montgomery County's Agricultural Advisory Board. He was an articulate, knowledgeable and respected supporter of the farming community and presented their views before the Planning Board, County Council and County Executive for over 20 years. A member of the Boyds Presbyterian Church, he also served as a member and president of the Boyds Civic Association and the Upper Montgomery County Civic Association.
