Carol Ladd

Mrs. Carol Lee Bowman Ladd, 89, of Poolesville, MD, died June 27, 2011 at her apartment in the Aspenwood Senior Living Center, Silver Spring, MD of abdominal cancer. Mrs. Ladd was a breeder of chocolate Labrador retrievers and Arabian horses. Several of her Labrador retrievers earned their American Field Trial Grand Championships. She was a founder of the Sugarland Searchers Doll Club of Maryland in 1986. Her other interests included photography, genetics and genealogy. She had been a Poolesville resident since 1967. Carol Lee Bowman was born in 1922 in Oakland, CA, to Charles L. Bowman and Lucile W. Sleeper. At age 12 her family moved to Larchmont, N.Y. She received a bachelor's degree in Arts and Sciences in 1943 from Cornell University. She met her future husband, Robert Daniel Ladd, at Cornell. They married in October 1943. After WW II, they moved to Tulsa, OK and then to the Washington, DC area, settling in Alexandria, VA, Potomac, MD and finally to their farm "Haverhill" in Poolesville, MD. Her memberships included the Cornell Club of Washington; Congressional Country Club in Bethesda; the Potomac Hunt Club; the Seneca Valley Pony Club of Montgomery County; and the St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Poolesville. Survivors include five children, Robin L. McEntire of Silver Spring, R. Daniel Ladd Jr. of Bethesda, Merle L. Silverman of Foster City, CA, retired Army Col. Charles B. Ladd of Douglasville, GA, and Phebe L. Mertes of Helotes, TX; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville, MD is handling the arrangements. A memorial reception will be held on July 16, 2011 from 11 am until 1 pm at St. Peter's Fellowship Hall in Poolesville, MD.

John G. Stringer

Mr. John "Jack" Stringer of Poolesville passed away on June 17, 2011 after a heart attack and respiratory failure. Jack, whose family was from Poolesville, lived at his home on Beall Street for over thirty years. He was well-known in the community as a concerned citizen and activist on various causes in the late 1970s and 1980s. His mother and father, Harry R. and Marguerite K. Stringer, his brother Harry R. Stringer, Jr. and sister Joan Miles preceded him in death.
He was born in Washington, DC and graduated from Wilson High School. He was a graduate from the University of Maryland majoring in English and Journalism. He was a member of Gamma Chi Chapter of Sigma Chi while there. Jack's interest in journalism came from his father who was a writer for the old Times Herald in Washington and eventually with the Washington Post. Jack's father wrote a popular racehorse column called String Along with Stringer in the 1930s.
Mr. Stringer served in the Korean War in the beginning of his three years of service and finished his military service in Japan with the 4th Mobile Radio Company. While in the army in Japan he was stationed at Camp Zama north of Tokyo as the radio disc jockey for the military Far East Network, which broadcast music and news throughout the far east. His daily show aired from dawn to mid-afternoon primarily to military families and others interested in an English language broadcast. At the end of his service in Japan he served at Supreme Headquarters in Tokyo under General Maxwell Taylor, as a public information radio reporter. In that position he produced radio interviews of soldiers serving in Japan that would be sent home to their families for broadcast on their local radio stations
After the military Jack began his writing career with the New York Daily News bureau located at the National Press Club in the early 1950s. Eventually he had a twenty-two year career was as a public information writer for the Federal government working for various departments, including Health, Education, and Welfare, Federal Drug Administration, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
He is survived by his niece Geoya Stout, her husband, Glenn Stout and children Kathryn, Nikolas, Timothy and Gabriel Stout.
A memorial service will be held at Hilton Funeral Home on July 1 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception of friends at his home in Poolesville.

Betty Joyce Keriakos

Mrs. Betty Joyce Keriakos, 71, of Murrells Inlet, SC, formerly of Germantown, MD on June 4, 2011.
She was the wife of Gus V. Keriakos, mother of Donald Dean (Nanette), James Dean, Angelo Keriakos all of Germantown, MD and Paul Keriakos (Vicki) of Jefferson, MD, sister of Louise Richardson of Columbia, MD and grandmother of 8.
She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday June 8 from 1-3 and 6-8 pm at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Rd. (Rt. 109), Barnesville, MD.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday June 9 at the Barnesville Baptist Church, 17917 Barnesville Rd., Barnesville, MD.
Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven cemetery, Silver Spring, MD.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or an Animal Rescue of you choice.

Mr. Pedro J. Bras, 85, of Dickerson and Puerto Rico, on May 30, 2011.

Helen Carlisle Burdette

Mrs. Helen Carlisle Burdette, 82, of Dickerson, MD, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd "Bill" Burdette. Born on November 20, 1928, in Dickerson, she was the daughter of the late James Maurice Carlisle and Bettie Fields Carlisle.
She was a 1946 graduate of Poolesville High School where she was President and Valedictorian of the class. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family always came first in her life. She enjoyed numerous trips to Disney World with her children and grandchildren. A stay-at-home mom for 20 years, she returned to work at the National Geographic Society in 1970. She spent the last 28 years of her career as a Federal employee at "the best place in the world to work, " the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in Washington, DC, until retiring at the age of 80.
She is survived by three children, Nancy Burdette Gallo and her husband Peter, of Barnesville, Gary Burdette and his wife, Jan, of Dickerson, and Terry Burdette and his wife, Barbara, of Woodsboro. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Amy Riggs and her husband, Jeremy, of Frederick, Tara Burdette, of Urbana, Jimmy Burdette, of Bethesda, Jennifer Abbamonte, of Washington, DC, Lisa Corrigan and her husband Matt, of New Market, and Bryan Abbamonte and his wife, Claire, of Odenton, as well as three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Bethany Corrigan, and Tyler Riggs. She is survived by two brothers, James "Bo" Maurice Carlisle, Jr., of Dickerson, and Richard "Dee" Vernon Carlisle and his wife, Donna, of Frederick. She was preceded in death by sister-in-law, MaryAnn Carlisle, and sister, Fannie Ensor and her husband, Harry Ensor.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 13, 2011 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville, MD. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Barnesville Baptist Church, 17917 Barnesville Road, Barnesville, MD. Pastors Joe Ivey and Wayne Roberson will officiate the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.

Fr. George B. Reid, Pastor Emeritus

Fr. George. B. Reid, Pastor Emeritus, 91, of St. Mary's Parish and Shrine of our Lady of Fatima, Barnesville, MD went home to be with the Lord on Monday May 9, 2011.
Born on April 5, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY he was the son of the late Joseph and Edna Staples Reid.
Surviving are three brothers, Girard Reid of Michigan, Robert Reid of New Jersey and Edwin H. Reid of New York.
Visitation will be held on Sunday May 15th from 2-9pm at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, Barnesville, MD with a Vigil Mass celebrated at 7:30 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Monday May 16th at the church.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
A reception will follow in St. Mary's Pavilion on the church grounds.

George O. Kephart

Mr. George Overton Kephart of Chiswell's Inheritance, Poolesville, MD departed this life on April 29, 2011 in the Great Smoky Mountains while celebrating the life of his grandfather, Horace Kephart. Loving father of George O. Kephart, Jr., Elizabeth Perry Kapsch and Ann-Frazer Brown, all of Poolesville, devoted grandfather of Sarah Frazer Prestemon, Simon Alexander Brown and Amanda Greenberry Brown, father-in-law of Robert J. Kapsch and Patt Robertson, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, MaryAnn Griffith Kephart. He is also survived by his devoted sisters, Barbara Kephart Crane and Jane K. Keller, his brother-in-law, William B. Griffith, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Born to Leonard W. Kephart and Frances Frazer Kephart on February 16, 1920, he grew up in Takoma Park, graduated from Central High School and in 1941 from University of Maryland where he was business manager of the Old Line newspaper and member of Omicron Deta Kappa and Kappa Alpha. In World War II, he served in the U. S. Coast Guard as an air-sea rescue pilot. His career included years spent abroad in Japan and throughout the world as an investment banker and for the State Department. He owned the Potomac and Rockville Supply Co. He served his community as a Commissioner of M-NCPPC, Trustee on the Maryland Environmental Trust and the Montgomery County Historical Society Trust, Chair of Barnesville School, and recently as a director of the Mooseum and on the Montgomery Countryside Alliance Advisory Board. He was a member of St. Peter's Parish for over 50 years. He captained the Cabot-36 sailboat "Sarah Frazer" on voyages across the Atlantic and throughout the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Chesapeake.
Friends may call at the family farm, Chiswell's Inheritance, 18200 Beallsville Road, Poolesville, MD on Friday, May 6, 2011 from 6 to 9 p.m. A service of Christian Burial will be held at St Peter's Parish, 20100 Whites Ferry Rd, Poolesville on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 3 p.m. with interment to follow at Monocacy cemetery, 19801 West Hunter Road, Beallsville, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Parish (stpetersnet.org) or to Montgomery Countryside Alliance (mocoalliance.org).

Dorothy Louise Williams

Mrs. Dorothy Louise Williams, 97, of Poolesville, MD, passed away on April 30, 2011. She was the wife of the late Kenneth Linwood Williams. Known to many as "Gobby, " she is survived by her devoted granddaughter Denise Habib, husband Don and great-grandsons Evan and Brian of Poolesville, granddaughter Debra Davis, great-grandson BJ and great-granddaughter Candace of Burtonsville, granddaughter Kimberly Williams and grandson John Willams of Calverton. She is also survived by special friends Viviana and Jimmy Warren of Poolesville and Bob Childers of San Jose, Costa Rica. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by sons Kent Linwood and Barton Keith Williams. She will be interred at Southern Memorial Gardens in Dunkirk, Maryland. Services will be private.

Eleanor S. Oxendine

Mrs. Eleanor S. Oxendine, 73, of Germantown, MD on April 29, 2011.
Loving wife of John C. Oxendine, mother of Lisa Phelps (Jerry), grandmother of Benjamin and Lauren Phelps, RJ, Tara and Alyssa Quintos.
She is survived by two brothers and three sisters.
Eleanor was preceded in death by one daughter, Angela Lynn Quintos.
Family will be receiving friends on Monday May 2 from 5-7pm at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109) Barnesville, MD .
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday May 3 at the Boyds Presbyterian Church, 19901 White Ground Road, Boyds, MD.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Maddie D. Kephart

Miss Maddie D. Kephart, 23, of Boyds, MD passed away suddenly on April 29, 2011.
She was the beloved daughter of Tracy and Mary Kephart.
Also surviving is her paternal grandmother, Mary Kephart, maternal grandmother, Ruth Reed, uncles, Jack and Dicky and aunts, Diane, Beverly and Cherry.
Maddie gave the ultimate gift of life by being an organ donor.
Family will be receiving friends on Tuesday May 3 from 3-8 pm at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109) Barnesville
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday May 4 at the Boyds Presbyterian Church, 19901 White Ground Road, Boyds.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Maddie Kephart Foundation, 21031 Clarksburg Rd., Boyds, MD 20841.

Anthony M. Natelli, Jr.

Mr. Anthony M. Natelli, Jr. ("Tony"), 52 of Dickerson, MD on April 6, 2011.
Tony is survived by his loving wife, Christine Natelli; his son, Jamie Hugh; and mother, Gertrude "Trudy" Natelli.
He is also survived by his two brothers, Thomas Natelli and wife Karen, Michael Natelli and wife Jessica; two sisters, Mary Natelli McCann and husband Tim and Nancy Natelli Duin and husband Steve; 3 grandchildren and 27 nieces and nephews.
Tony was preceded in death by his father, Anthony M. Natelli, who passed away on March 25th, 2004.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Monday April 11 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, Barnesville, MD.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be holding a reception immediately after at the pavilion on the church grounds. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made in Tony's memory to the Anthony M. Natelli Foundation, c/o Natelli Communities, 506 Main Street, Gaithersburg, MD 20878.
