Whitney Staver

Whitney Staver, 63, of Poolesville MD died suddenly March 21, 2011 of a heart attack.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years Gini, son Whit Wm. 26, daughter Victoria 25, his parents Preble and Isabell, 3 sisters, Leslie, Lynne and Laurie, niece Cindy Broderick, nephew Eric Bouvet and their families. Whitney also leaves his dogs Cayda and Jazz.
Whitney began his career with 2 tours in Vietnam as a Marine in the 1960's. Upon his discharge he spent 13 years as a contract employee at the CIA in Mclean, Va. He next worked as a full time dad for 2 yrs then trained as a barber and became an owner/operator alongside his wife Gini at the Poolesville Barber and Stylist. He has been an active member in the I.O.O.F. Lodge #97 for 20 yrs of fellowship.
The family will receive friends on Saturday March 26 from 12 - 3 pm at the Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church, 17821 Elgin Road, Poolesville, in the church hall.
A memorial service will be held at 3 pm in the sanctuary. A reception will follow in the church hall.

Jack Lee "Rip" Broadwater

Mr. Jack Lee "Rip" Broadwater, 69, of Poolesville, died suddenly on Thursday March 17, 2011.
He was the loving husband of Jeanette Broadwater.
Born on October 14, 1941 in Oakland, MD, he was the son of the late Gerald and Hope Broadwater.
Surviving besides his wife is one son, Jerry Broadwater of Cumberland, MD, one daughter, Cherise Praniewski of Poolesville, one brother, Leonard Broadwater of Annapolis, MD and two grandchildren, Kandyce and Kori Lee.
Jack was also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday March 20 from 3-6pm at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109), Barnesville, MD where funeral services will be held on Monday March 21 at 11am.
Interment will follow in Darnestown Presbyterian Church cemetery, Darnestown, MD.

George L. Reed, Jr.

Mr. George L. Reed, Jr., 80, of Bedford, VA died on March 2, 2011 at his residence.
The family will be receiving friends on Friday March 4 from 6-8 PM at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville where funeral services will be held on Saturday March 5 at 11 AM.
Interment will follow in Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville.

Christie L. Lynch

Mrs. Christie L. Lynch, 35, of Hagerstown died on February 26, 2011.
The family will be receiving friends on Sunday March 6 from 3-5 PM at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville where a funeral service will be held at 5 PM immediately following the visitation.

Edward U. Boxall

Mr. Edward Upton Boxall, 67, of Boyds, died suddenly on Wednesday February 16, 2011 at the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.
He was the loving husband of Jo Ann Boxall.
Born on April 8, 1943 in Frederick, he was the son of the late Willie and Nellie Dillehay Boxall.
Surviving besides his wife are his two sons, Charles and wife June, Carl and wife Norma, two grandsons, Charlie and James, one great grandson, Luke and 4 step grandchildren.
Services were private.

G. Robert "Bob" Checkley

Mr. G. Robert Checkley, 88, of Comus, MD, died at his daughter's home in Fredericksburg, VA on Sunday February 6, 2011. Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Norma June (Bagley) Checkley. Born on September 2, 1922 in Le Mars, Iowa, he was the beloved son of the late Alfred and Flora Goodwin Checkley.
Surviving are his four daughters, Carol Checkley of Comus, Janice Connell (Charlie) of Houston, Texas, Gini Guentner (Bob) of Vernon Hills, Illinois, Sharon Skipper (Rick) of Fredericksburg, VA; 11 grandchildren, Katie, Celeste, Charles, Sean, Joshua, Brian, Jonathan, Emily, Nathan, Brandon, and Robbie; and 6 great grandchildren, Eli, Noah, Jadon, Katelyn, Payton and Evalyn. Bob was preceded in death by his brother Wilfred and two granddaughters, Sandra Sue and Lauren.
During World War II, Bob served his country by enlisting in the Army shortly after
Pearl Harbor. He began as an infantry soldier and quickly advanced in rank and
position as a gunnery instructor. When volunteers were needed for the Army Air
Corps, he became a belly gunner on a B-24. He flew many dangerous missions from New Guinea to bomb mainland Japan as part of the 13th Air Force, 371st Bomber
Group, 307th Squadron, he was honorably discharged in 1946.
After the war, Bob attended and graduated the University of Michigan where he earned his B.S. in Engineering and lettered in Gymnastics. During his long career as a Chrysler Corporation automotive engineer, he specialized in the ground-breaking concept of fuel economy. He placed first in several cross-country mobile economy runs, always beating his boss.
At the end of his engineering career, Bob returned to his childhood roots of a farmer. He succeeded his father-in-law, Marion Bagley, as the owner and farm manager of the "Farr/Bagley" farm, a cow-calf operation in Comus, Maryland.
His life's passion was farming, but when asked what he was most proud of his answer was, "being a father." In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Bob's charity of choice, the Fisher House. www.fisherhouse.org

Doris Turman

Doris Lorraine Turman, 79, of Poolesville, MD passed away peacefully on Friday January 28, 2011.
Survived by siblings Anne and Heath Goad and Betty Conner. Husband, Trent Turman (deceased). Children, Phyllis Ziner, Leburn (deceased), Charles, Joseph and Roger Turman. 12 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren.
Family will receive friends on Monday January 31 from 5-8 pm at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville, MD.
Funeral services will be held at 9 am on Tuesday February 1 at the Church of the Redeemer, 19425 Woodfield Road, Gaithersburg, MD.
Interment will follow in Ft.Lincoln cemetery, Brentwood, MD.

Sally W. Caw

Mrs. Sally W. Caw died on Tuesday January 25, 2011.
She was the loving wife of 56 years of Joseph W. Caw, Jr.
Also surviving are her children; Joseph W. Caw, III, Rosemarie Caw Reader (Mike), James C. Caw; one sister, Elizabeth Dyer; two brothers, William and David Wilson and 7 grandchildren.
The family will be receiving friends on Friday January 28 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Rd. (Rt. 109), Barnesville, MD. directions
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday January 29 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Rd., P.O. Box 67, Barnesville, MD 20838.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Sally's name to St. Mary's.

Stanley Leo Umstead, Jr. "Lee"

Mr. Stanley Leo Umstead, Jr., known as "Lee, " of Odenton, Maryland, passed away Monday, January 24, 2011.
He was born August 9, 1957, in Frederick, Maryland, and grew up in Beallsville, Maryland. Lee graduated from Poolesville High School and attended Montgomery College. He worked in the restaurant industry most of his career and was currently working for Martin's Catering. He enjoyed coaching his children's sports teams, loved cooking, and enjoyed spending time at the beach.
He is survived by his mother, Rebecca Lillard Umstead, Frederick; his children, Katie Umstead and Austin Umstead, and his former wife, Lisbeth Jenkins Umstead, Bowie, Maryland; his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Joe Hamilton, Littleton, Colorado, his uncle J. Robert Lillard, Jr., Barnesville, Maryland, his niece Amy Hamilton, Vancouver, Washington, his cousin and cousin-in-law, Janita and Gary Burdette, Dickerson, Maryland, and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Leo Umstead.
Graveside services at Mt. Olivet cemetery, Frederick, Maryland, at 10 am on Saturday January 29. Please meet at the Old Chapel to process to the grave site.
Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Barnesville Baptist Church, P. 0. Box 69, Barnesville, Maryland 20838.

William (Bill) Emerson Brown

Departed this life on January 21, 2011 in his home in Ijamsville, MD following a short but fierce battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Marjorie Marvin Brown for over 56 years and the loving and caring father of sons James E. Brown (Poolesville, MD), Timothy W. Brown (Los Angeles, CA), and Matthew W. Brown (New Market, MD). He is also survived by his sister and her husband Imogene and Skip McClung, four loving grandchildren (Jess, Tucker, Dianna, and Andy) and an extended family of loving brothers and sisters-in-law (Patricia and Steve Arntson, Judy Majors), daughters-in-law, step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and close friends. A memorial and celebration of the life of Bill "Pops" Brown will be held on Saturday January 29, 2011 at 11:00 AM with reception to follow at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 South Main Street, Mount Airy, MD 21771. Interment will be held in a private ceremony on Sunday (January 30) at National Memorial Park in Falls Church VA. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Calvary United Methodist Church of Mount Airy MD.

Peter T. Menke

Mayor Peter Thomas Menke, 69, of Barnesville MD died on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 after a long battle with cancer. Pete was the son of the late Dorothy Gray Menke and the late George V. Menke. He was the beloved husband, best friend and partner of Patricia Hillard Menke and the late Francis Morgan Menke. Pete is survived by his brother George, and wife Julie and brother John and wife Meg. Pete was the best father and deeply loved his four children, daughter Meredith G. Menke and husband Dave Coker, daughter Crystal Gaddis Boyd and husband Cabot, son Craig Gaddis and wife Jacqueline of Barnesville, and daughter Samantha Menke; and four grandchildren, Ethan and Ashton Gaddis, Ava and Chloe Boyd. Pete will be greatly missed by all.
A Funeral Mass at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Barnesville will be held on Saturday, January 22 at 1:00 PM. Immediately following, a celebration of his life will be held at the St. Mary's Catholic Church Pavilion. directions
