Edward Hicks, Jr.

Edward Hicks, family man, government executive, deputy sheriff, private pilot, charter and commuter bus driver, friend
Born January 13, 1938 deceased March 18, 2012.
He died in dignity as he lived. The whole family and some close friends
were around him. He gripped his wife's hand and breathed his last peacefully.
Born in Watts, he quickly learned "street smarts." He worked with his dad in landscaping and tree care.
He helped his mother by taking the money and bringing home the groceries.
He was threatened and assaulted but he still protected the family grocery funds.
He worked in a parking garage downtown Los Angeles where he developed a life long love of transportation.
Louise Maude Graves entered his life as his bride in 1959. She worked for the government and suggested when Edward finished college that he also work there. Edward financed all his college and university tuition himself with his work.
In 1959 he also volunteered in the Navy as a Corpsman. Aboard an aircraft carrier, he met John Wayne and had his picture taken with him.
Louise, his wife, died of stomach cancer. The diagnosis was too late to save her.
In 1964, Edward married Kathleen Blackford at Holy Name of Mary Church in San Dimas, California.
They both worked at IRS. They attended law school together but Kathleen became very ill and had to quit.
Edward volunteered to become a Deputy Sheriff as a reserve officer in Los Angeles county. He went through the police academy and was so proud to become a motorcycle deputy. He bought his own Harley (hog)...a great pleasure for him. He was one of the leaders to open the Rose Parade in Pasadena. He patrolled the streets of the county and met some famous people on the Malibu assignment. He had some good stories to tell and knew where all the streets in L.A. County were.
Edward was given a promotion to Customs in San Francisco. There he wrote a manual for the personnel department.
He had met and had a friendship with Senator George Murphy in Los Angeles.
Senator Murphy suggested Edward for a grade level 15 even though Edward was a GS 12. A special acceptance was given since he was shown as the most qualified man for the job. He became the personnel director for HEW at the highest level of career government. He also became the security director for the department.
Edward retired at age 48 and moved on to transportation. He loved trains and was an avid model train builder.
He bought several motor homes, one after another, which he used to travel with his family and friends. He became a consultant for the Recreational Vehicle Association. He met other well known motor home enthusiasts including Supreme Court Justice Thomas.
He then happily got a professional license and drove a passenger bus for Eyre Bus Company. He loved the company and the passengers and they loved him. When Eyre lost the contract for his route, Edward went to Dillon to keep his passengers. When he arrived at the bus stop the passengers cheered. He loved Dillon bus company also.
Edward was a Knights of Columbus member. He was very devoted to his Roman Catholic Faith. He attended St. Peter's Parish and St. Patrick's. Then he found and joined Our Lady of Poland Parish to attend the traditional Mass, also known as the Extrodinary Liturgy. He loved the Latin. He was kind and patient with everyone. He was dignified in demeanor and made an impression. People noticed him and admired him. He was a rock for his family. He always wanted to help people. He could not see someone in need without stopping to help. At last peace for him. He will be sorely missed by all those liveds he touched and his beloved family.
The wake will be held from 6 to 8 pm at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109), Barnesville MD.
The Funeral Mass and burial will be at St. Mary's Church in Barnesville, 18230 Barnesville Road, at 11:00 am Saturday morning.
Light refreshments after at the Pavilion.
Flowers accepted. Donations can be made to Our Lady of Poland Church in Silver Spring MD.
