Agatha Hope Adams
Agatha Hope Adams, 88, of Hollywood, Md, died on Friday, February 13, 2004 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, Md.
Hope was born on October 3, 1915 in Hollywood. She was the daughter of the late George Clarence and Mary Agnes Wible Thompson. She was preceded in death on December 28, 2003 by her beloved husband of 68 years, John Franklin Adams, Sr., whom she married on April 23, 1935.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Agnes Tufte of Hollywood; a daughter, Margaret "Sissy" Reeder of Hollywood; two sons, James Robert Adams of Grovetown, Georgia and Joseph Michael Adams, Sr. of Hollywood; a special niece, Juanita Raley Johnson of Hollywood, who was like a daughter; 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John Franklin Adams, Jr.; 6 sisters, Madeleine Cusic, Merle Keller, Helen Gaus, Sister Mary Borromeo, Louise Alvey and Mary Jane Oliver; 3 brothers, George William and Samuel Thompson.
Hope enjoyed gardening, watching the pigeons and bluebirds, charitable work and spending time with her family and many friends, especially her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called her Nan-Noo. A 1930 graduate of Great Mills High School and life long resident of St. Mary’s County, she tirelessly spent many hours arranging food, clothing, electric and heat for those in need. She always had a special place in her heart for children and never wanted to see anyone go to bed hungry or cold.
Hope worked as a caseworker for the Catholic Charities of St. Mary’s County for 16 years until her retirement in 1986. She continued serving the County as Volunteer Secretary for the United Way of St. Mary’s County; Member of the Disabled Persons Review Board, Child Abuse and Neglect Committee, Inter-Agency Care Team for Seniors, and Commission on Aging and Treasurer of St. John’s St. Vincent de Paul Society, Hollywood.
Hope was the reluctant recipient of many commendations and awards presented to her by County and State Government; Social Workers’ and Youth Organizations and the Vatican. Among those are the Jane Gallagher Award presented in 1983 and the Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice presented in 1984 and 1991. She was described by her associates as a trusted and sought-after "good neighbor’ to the needy in Southern Maryland "seven days a week". Monsignor Harris and Father Ron Potts referred to Hope several years ago as the "Mother Teresa" of her parish. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, February 18, at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church in Hollywood. Monsignor Martin Harris was the celebrant. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Travis Shelter, Mikey Adams, Wally Bowles, Frank Bowles, Danny Thompson and Danny Ridgell.

Charlotte Ryland Davies,
Charlotte Ryland Davies, 35, of Bryans Road died Feb. 4, 2004 at her home after a long illness. She was an 1987 graduate of Lackey High School and received her child care certificate from Charles County Community College. Born July 11, 1968 in Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of Leslie "Gene" and Gloria Davies of Bryans Road, MD. In addition to her parents she is survived by her silbings, Leslie Hilliard and Theresa Hill of Greenbelt; Christopher Davies and Loraine Hennessy of La Plata; Sharon Flick of Newburg; Gregory Davies of Benedict; Carol Frank of Michigan; Victoria Brady of Perry Hall; Peter Davies of Byrans Road and eighteen nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be held Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Issue, MD. There will be a reception following at the church hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Charles County, P.O. Box 1703, La Plata, MD 20646 or NIH Children's Inn, 7 West Drive, Bethesda, MD 20814-1509. Arrangements are being handled by Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata.

Edwin Henry Neville Sr.
70, of Waldorf
Edwin Henry Neville Sr., 70, of Waldorf died Feb. 5, 2004 at Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, La Plata. Mr. Nevelle was born in Washington, D.C., but lived in Waldorf for over 30 years. He was an Army veteran. Mr. Neville was a manager at Hechingers fro 20 years and worked nights at the Bannister 7-11 for the past 12 years. His two passions were fishing and Lionel model trains. He was cremated at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home and a memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Piney Parish of Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. Mr. Neville is survived by his wife, Mary Joyce Neville; daughter, Helene Gundepudi; son, Ed Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Elizabeth "Jackie" Josephine Hyde,
72, of Aquasco
Elizabeth "Jackie" Josephine Hyde, 72, of Aquasco died Feb. 13, 2004 at Southern Maryland Hospital Center, Clinton. Mrs. Hyde was a cafeteria worker for Prince George's County Board of Education. She was married March 28, 1952. She was a cafeteria worker at Gwynn Park, Surrattsville, as Schmidth Outdoor Education Center. She owned and operated "The Little Store" in Aquasco. She enjoyed gardening, farming, yard sales, the water, crabbing, fishing and going to play the slots, and playing cards.
Born March 28, 1931, she was the daughter of the late, George Goldsmith and the late Arlene Goldsmith. She is survived by her husband, William P. Hyde of Aquasco; daughters, Debbie Richards and her husband, Benson, of Waldorf, and Terrie Starr and her husband, Gregory, of Aquasco; sister, Boots Bankowski; six grandchildren, William Richards, Ben Richards, Danielle Starr, Megan Starr, Justin Starr, and Garrett Starr. Services were held Feb. 17 at the Immanuel Methodist Church, Aquasco. The Rev. James Hunt officiated. Burial took place at Trinity Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA. 23058. Arrangements are being handled by Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata.

Bernard “Sonny” Kerwin
Bernard “Sonny” Kerwin, 82, of Valley Lee, MD, died on Sunday, February 15, 2004 at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.
Born on June 29, 1921 in Manhattan, NY, he was the son of the late Edward and Rose Emerick Kerwin. Mr. Kerwin served his country in the US Army during World War II receiving the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He moved to St. Mary’s County in 1946 from Astoria, NY. He was a carpenter. Mr. Kerwin was a member of the Second District Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post # 2632 in California, MD and did volunteer work at St. George Catholic Church. His hobby was traveling. He enjoyed being with his family, his wife and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Zita Taroni Kerwin, whom he married on April 21, 1941 at St. George Catholic Church in Valley Lee, MD, four daughters, Joann Lacey of Loveville, MD, Anita Gerek of St. Mary’s City, MD, Violet Edwards of Tall Timbers, MD and Vicky Estevez of Lexington Park, MD, 9 grandchildren, Kim Lacey, Jeff Gerek, Terri Gerek, Andrew Gerek, Denton Edwards, Ryan Edwards, Ashley Estevez, Rachel Estevez and Corey Estevez, three sisters, Alice Clyde, Mimi Carleo and Joan Polo of NY. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Violet Scigliano and a brother John Kerwin.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 19, 2004 from 5; 00 p.m. until 8; 00 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD. Prayers will be recited at 7; 00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 20, 2004 at 11; 00 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church in Valley Lee, MD. The Reverend Mark W. Ervin will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Charles Cannetti, 74
U. S. Air Force Veteran
Charles Cannetti, 74, of Park Hall, Md, died on January 21, 2004 at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md.
Born on February 26, 1929 in Astoria, NY, he was the son of the late Charles and Matilda Salvioli Cannetti.
Mr. Cannetti moved to St. Mary’s County in 1947 from Long Island, NY. He served his country in the United States Air Force from November 16, 1951 until September 14, 1955 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. His hobbies included baking and painting. He also loved acting and belonged to the drama club at St. Mary’s College, in St. Mary’s City.
He is survived by his brother, Joseph Cannetti and wife Margaret, of Lexington Park, a niece Joanne Sutliff and husband Michael, of Lusby, a nephew, Raymond Cannetti and wife Julie King of St. Mary’s City, MD, a great niece, Michelle Kreul and husband David, of Lexington Park, two great great nephews, Joseph Sutliff and Anthony Kreul both of Lexington Park..
Friends may call on Monday February 2, 2004 from 10; 00 until 11; 00 am at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. A Memorial Service will be held at 11; 00 am in the Brinsfield Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend Michael Dolan rector of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Lexington Park, will officiate. Inurnment will follow at 2; 00 pm at the Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 339, Lexington Park, MD 20653.

Mary Klear (Bell) Miles, 77
St. Mary's Clerk of the Circuit Court,
Register of Wills
Mary Klear (Bell) Miles, 77, formerly of Leonardtown, MD died on Friday, January 23, 2004 at her residence in California, MD.
Born on January 14, 1927 in Leonardtown, MD, she was the daughter of the late John Gilbert and Jane Paul Abell Klear. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy, was the Register of Wills for St. Mary’s County from 1962 until 1977 when she was appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary’s County to succeed Dorothy Bailey Kucher. She ran and won election in 1978 and became a political powerhouse in the county, one of the first women to do so. She ran again and won in 1982 and 1986, deciding not to run again in 1990.
As Clerk of the Circuit Court, she made housecalls, performing weddings at any location in St. Mary’s County where people wanted to get married . She reformed record keeping in the courthouse, opened up records for after hours and weekend work for research.
As Clerk of the Court, Mary Bell Miles emphasized customer services and began first modernization. Her appointment as Chief Deputy, Evelyn Arnold, who had been Chief Deputy prior to her taking office, succeeded her as Clerk and still holds the office, while Arnold has taken the Clerks Office into another century with more access to records than ever before, a development which would have really pleased Mary Bell.
A strong believer in God, Mary carried over her personal beliefs to everyone she met with inspiration rarely seen in a public official and maintained that she was an old fashioned "people’s Democrat" who looked out for the little guy.
Mary was first active politically in the early 1960’s in the Young Democrats, later was president of Democratic Club, member of the Catholic Daughters and member of the United Woman’s Democratic Club State of Maryland.
She married George C. Miles on November 21, 1987. They made their home in Ocala, FL.
She is survived by her sisters, Rose Theresa Clements, Shirley K. Hunt and a brother, George G. Klear all of Leonardtown, MD, four step children, George Miles of LaPlata, MD, David Miles of Accokeek, MD, Michelle Wills of Port Tobacco, MD and Lynn Merlin of LaPlata, MD. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, a grand nephew and step grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George C. Miles, a sister, Anna Sarah Strine and a brother, Frank F. Klear.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Leonardtown, MD at 10; 30 a.m. A private burial will be in the Florida National cemetery in Ocala, FL.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Helping Hands, P.O. Box 1658, Leonardtown, MD 20650, the Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 229, Leonardtown, MD 20650 or the Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 79, Hollywood, MD 20636.

Mina O’Bryan Baxter, 98
Mina O’Bryan Baxter, 98, of Lexington Park, MD, died on Saturday, January 24, 2004 at her residence.
Born on August 25, 1905 in Parkville, IL, she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Susan Steffans O’Bryan. She was a member of the Patuxent Presbyterian Church, the Army and Navy Club, St. Mary’s County Garden Club, Ikebana International and the St. Mary’s County Woman’s Club.
She is survived by a great nephew, Phil O’Bryan of Paris, IL and a great niece, Nancy Ramirez of Phoenix, AZ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Thurston H. Baxter in 1988. Her only son, Lt. Thurston Richard Baxter, was lost in December 1951 while flying a bombing mission over North Korea.
Friends will be received from 1; 00 p.m. until 2; 00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 2; 00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Reverend Michael Jones will conduct the service. Interment will be in Arlington National cemetery on Friday, February 13, 2004 at 2; 00 p.m.

Rose Moorehead,
79, of La Plata
Rose Moorehead, 79, of La Plata died January 20, 2004 at Civista Medical Center, La Plata. She was a homemaker. Born September 18, 1924 in Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of the late Dominic Magnolia and the late Nunziata Trobasso Magnolia. In addition to her parents, she was also was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Richard Moorehead, Sr.; brother, Jospeh Magnolia; sisters, Ann Sell, Catherine Peters and Lena Reifschneider. She is survived by her sons, Thomas Richard Moorehead, Jr., and Robert W. Moorehead; daughters, Donna Lee Coates, Betty Jean Moorehead, and Linda Sue Moorehead; sisters-in-law, Virginia Magnolia and Wanda Moorehead; brother-in-law, Joseph Moorehead; eight grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Sunday, January 25 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata. Service will be held Tuesday, January 27 at 9; 30 at Bethal Baptist Church, Ripley. The Rev. Mack Burton will officiate. Burial will take place at Maryland Veterans cemetery, Cheltenham. Memorial contributions may be made to the Spring Dell Center, 6040 Radio Station Road, La Plata, MD 20646. Arrangements are being handled by Arehart-Echols Funeral Home.

SPC Daniel Marens O’Brien
Served in U.S. Army in Iraq
SPC Daniel Marens O’Brien 22, of Mechanicsville, Maryland and formerly of Callaway Maryland, died on Jan 22, 2004. He was born on July 7, 1981 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1990 with his 3 brothers and 1 sister.
Daniel graduated from Leonardtown H.S. in 2000 and joined the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Polk, La. He served his country in Baghdad, Iraq from April to August 2003. He returned from Iraq to Fort Polk, La where he was honorably discharged.
Daniel was the son of Judith Marie O’Brien and Carol O’Neil Schachter. Brother of Alef, Vino, Deci, Adriano, Andre O’Brien and Eliz Ridgell and Casey and Jason Schachter. Uncle of Meghan, Cassie, JoJo and Noah Ridgell, Little Uino O’Brien and Tiani and Andre Busby.
Daniel will be fondly remembered by his family and friends listening to his favorite music by Bob Marley and UB40. He loved playing.
Soccer with brothers and had a deep love of his home country of Brazil. He was devoted to his family and loved them all dearly.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 25th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD and where there will be a memorial service at 3; 00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Casa Limier, an orphanage in Sao Paulo, Brazil, C/O Carol Schachter, 21200 Point Lookout Road, Callaway, Maryland 20620.

Applegarth, 91 of Hughesville, Maryland died Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at Mount Carmel East Hospital at Columbus, Ohio.Born April 8, 1911 in Hughesville, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late William Francis and Gertrude Montgomery Bassford. She was of the Episcopal faith and attended Old Fields Episcopal Church in Hughesville, Maryland. She was a homemaker.In addition to her parents, she was predeceased in death by her husband, William and son Bobby. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law bill and Loryc Applegarth of Columbus, Ohio, son Eugene B. and Delores Applegarth of Vancouver, Washington, grandsons Gregg and wife Teresa Applegarth and David and wife Ardin Applegarth of Columbus, Ohio, granddaughter Nancy Duke of Marins Ferry, Ohio, two great-grandchildren, Michael and Keri, sister-in-laws Eleanor Bassford of Columbus, Ohio and Agnes Bassford of Accokee, Maryland and Marie Bassford of Hughesville, Maryland, special friend, Denise Stiers of Columbus, Ohio. Also many nieces, nephews, and friends survive her.
Family will receive friends on Monday, January 27, 2003 from 2-4 & 6-8pm in The Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD where a Funeral Service will be held at 11; 00am on Tuesday, January 28, 2003. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf, MD.
