Dr. Woodrow Claiborne Henderson, of Leonardtown, MD, formerly of Richmond, VA, Died on Friday, January 12, 2001 in St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Leonardtown, MD.He is survived by one son, Woodrow Claiborne Henderson, Jr. of Arlington, VA, ; two daughters Anne Henderson Marum of Lexington Park, MD and Catherine Henderson Stein of Silver Spring, MD; two sisters, Vernesa Henderson Mills and Kathryn Henderson Dewberry, both of South Boston, VA.; two nephews, Edwin Dean Henderson of Richmond, VA and Herbert G. Mills, Jr. of Greensboro, NC.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family received friends on Sunday, January 14, 2001 at the Bennett Funeral Home, Richmond, VA, A Memorial Service was held on Monday, January 15, 2001 at River Road Baptist Church in Richmond, VA. Joseph Mulry Thompson, Jr.
Joseph Mulry Thompson, Jr., 78 of Piney Point, Maryland, died on Thursday, January 11, 2001 at his residence. Born on July 10, 1922 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Mulry J. Thompson of Piney Point, MD, and the late Ethel Mae Hern Thompson. Mr. Thompson moved from Arlington, Virginia to St. Mary’s County 23 years ago. He was an electrician and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, crabbing, gardening and cooking.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife Margaret Evelyn Knezovich Thompson whom he married on August 11, 1944 in Washington, DC., one son, Joseph M. Thompson, III of Piney Point, MD, three daughters, Jane Ann Nau of Leonardtown, MD, Carolyn Cullison of Piney Point, MD and Mary Lou Burke of Arlington, VA, a brother Donald Thompson of Ashburm VA, sister Mildred Beery of Lake Ridge, VA, thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Thompson.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, January 14, 2001 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., Leonardtown, MD, where prayers will be recited at 6; 00 p.m. A funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 15, 2001 at 11; 00 a.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Philip Kannarkat Verghese
Dr. Philip Kannarkat Verghese, 30, of Leonardtown, Maryland, died on Thursday, January, 11, 2001 at his residence.
Born September 15, 1970 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Dr. Kannarkat P. Verghese and Dr. Annie P. Verghese of Leonardtown, Maryland. Dr. Verghese was a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School and a Post Graduate in Dermatology, at Howard University in Washington, DC. He moved to the St. Mary’s County area in July 1977, and resided until to June 1988 and then returned again in September 2000.
Dr. Verghese is survived by his siblings David Verghese, JoJo Verghese and Nina Verghese.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, January 13, 2001from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Rd., Leonardtown, MD. Sheldon George Russell
Sheldon George Russell "Captain Shell", 83 of Piney Point, MD, died on Thursday, January 11, 2001 at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, MD.
Born on February 2, 1917 in Tall Timbers, MD, he was the son of the late George W. Russell and Sarah Shorter Russell. Mr. Russell served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After being honorably discharged he went to work for the public works department at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station for a short while. Mr. Russell was a boat captain for over 50 years, he fished, crabbed, clammed and oystered the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. He also worked for Stewart Petroleum County in Piney Point. He was a lifetime member of St. George’s Episcopal Church.
Mr. Russell is survived by his wife, Winifred C. Abell Russell of Tall Timbers, MD, three daughters, S. Eleanor Strickland of Great Mills, MD, Shirley W. Dorrel of Brooms Island, MD, Patricia A. Morris of St. Inigoes, MD, two sons, Sheldon C. and Walter T. Russell, both of Tall Timbers, MD, nine grandchildren, Ricky E. Dorrell Sr., Sherr L. Dorrell, John B. Morris, III, Jason R. Morris, Shawn Adkins, Joyce E. Strickland, Donald S. Strickland, Michael S. Russell, and Brian T. Russell, seven great-grandchildren, Lauren Dorrell, Merry Dorrell, Rick E. Dorrell, Jr., Josh Dorrell, Bradley A. Tippett, Alison M. Morris, and Joshua Adkins, a sister, Sarah Gohl. He was predeceased by four sisters, Zella White, Bernice Tippett, Shirley Munetz and Jean Kazen and two brothers, Houston Russell and Edward Russell.

Marian Alma Hutman, 74, of Mechanicsville, Maryland, died on Sunday, January 7, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, Maryland.Born on January 20, 1926 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Marian Mann Niess. Mrs. Hutman was a Homemaker. She moved from Forestville, Maryland and has lived in this area for five years. She liked flowers and gardening.Mrs. Hutman is survived by husband; Michael T. Hutman, Jr. of Mechanicsville, Maryland, whom she married on May 1, 1944 in Washington, DC. She is also survived by a daughter; Janet M. Koerber of Mechanicsville, Maryland, two sons; Michael T. Hutman of Germantown, Maryland and Albert T. Delores May VanSteenburg
Delores May VanSteenburg, 68, of Great Mills, died on Monday, January 8, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, Maryland.Born March 12, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan, mother of five children and ten grandchildren. She was loved and respected by all who knew her. She drove a school bus for twenty years at the Gladwin Michigan Public Schools while married to her first husband, Raymond Brown. She was a teacher aide and school bus driver for Queens Creek Arizona School system for eight years until forced into retirement by heart problems. She was an active member of Metropolitan Community Church of the Chesapeake. She loved to sew and quilt and was a member of Quilters By the Bay, the Pax River Quilters Guild and the Thursday Senior’s Sewing Club.Surviving family in the order of birth are as follows; Nancy and her husband, Raymond Robinson, their children Sarah, Alex, Jacob, Kevan and Lucas of PawPaw, Michigan; Gerald Brown and his wife, Anne, their two children Josephine and GeorgeAnne from Leavenworth, Kansas; Cindy and Linda, Charlie and his wife, Bertha, their two children Christopher and Heather from Brunswick, Maine; and Terry and Jewell and his son, Derrick from Chandler, Arizona. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Pratt of Detroit, Michigan and nephews, Jimmy, Johnny and Randy. Calvin Herbert Dean, 78 of Mechanicsville, Maryland died, Sunday, January 7, 2001 at his residence. Born in Laurel Grove, Maryland on March 27, 1922 son of the late Luther Franklin Dean, Sr. and Lillian Grace Jones Dean.He was the husband of Dorothy Virginia Weddle Dean, he is survived by one daughter Judy Dean Wood of Hollywood, Maryland a son Raynor Calvin Dean of Dunkirk, Maryland a brother Luther Franklin Dean, Jr, of Hollywood, Maryland, two grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren also survive him.Mr. Dean served in the United States Army from February 1943 to November 1945 during this time he received the ATO Medal, EAMETO Medal, Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medal, he went to work for the Public Works Department as a Maintenance Scheduler at the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Mr. Dean was a life long resident of St. Mary’s County, he attended Mt. Born on March 28, 1963 in San Diego, California, he was the son of David Earl Mowrer, Sr. and Nancy Lorraine Groff Mowrer of Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Mowrer moved to this area in 1967.In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter; Amanda Renee Mowrer of Nicoma Park, Oklahoma, two brothers; David E. Mowrer, Jr., of St. Inigoes, Maryland And James K. Mowrer of Lexington Park, Maryland, and paternal grandfather; Earl A. Janet Ruth Funk, 79, of California, Maryland, died on Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at Bayside Nursing Center, Lexington Park, Maryland. Born February 13, 1921 in Sugar Grove, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Linnie May Simmons Eckard. Ms. Funk moved from Florida and has lived in this area since 1990. She worked in Shenandoah Hospital in Woodstock, Virginia for eight years in Food Service and also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary in Strasburg, Virginia. Her favorite flower was a yellow rose.Ms. Funk is survived by a daughter; Shirley Ann Mason of Winchester, Virginia, a son; Donald Byers of California, Maryland, a sister; Dorothy Arrowood of Sebring, Florida, a brother; Raymond Eckard of LeBelle, Florida, eight grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. Gail Irvine Wood, 62, of California, MD died Saturday, December 30, 2000 at her home in Wildewood. Born on September 17, 1938 in Neptune, NJ, she is the daughter of Ethelyn Virginia Irvine of Freehold, NJ and the late Kenneth C. Irvine. Ms. Wood attended Freehold High School and went on to Arizona State University at Tempe, AZ, where she earned a degree in education. During her 26 year teaching career, she educated 4th and 5th graders in Oakville, Greenview Knolls and Lexington Park Elementary School. She enjoyed traveling, stamping up and other crafts. She also enjoyed showing her Australian Cattle Dog, Torri, throughout the East Coast. Ms. Wood was a member of the Australian Cattle Dog Club of America and Therapy Dogs International. She was also a member of the Reformed Church of Freehold, Freehold, NJ. She is survived by her mother, Virginia Irvine of Freehold, NJ, one son, Randall Jay Wood, of California, MD, one sister, Karen I. Campbell, of Howell, NJ, a granddaughter, Jessica Lyn wood, of California, MD and two nephews, Ian and Keith Campbell, of Howell, NJ.. Andrew Paul Toth
Andrew Paul Toth, 86, of Piney Point, MD died on January 11, 2001 at his home.
Born November 6, 1914 in Pottstown, PA., he was the son of the late Andrew Toth and Barbara Undo Toth. He was the brother of Helen Wasko of Pottstown, PA., and the uncle of Frank Toth of Piney Point, MD. Mr. Toth was a cook and bartender, an avid fisherman, and enjoyed playing cards with his friends.
Visitation for Mr. Toth will he held on Sunday, January 14, 2001between the hours of 1; 00 p.m. - 3; 00 p.m. in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home.

Marie Marion Jameson, 77 of California, MD died on January 4, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital.
Born January 31, 1923 in Pouch Cove, Finland she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Theresa Williams Sullivan. She was the loving wife of the late Joseph Hayden Jameson.

Charles Ernest "Tootsie" Morris, 88, of Abell, MD died on January 3, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital.
Born September 21, 1912 in Abell, MD he was the son of the late Foster and Frances Geneva Ellis Morris. He was the loving husband of R. Thelma Thompson Morris whom he married in Holy Angels Catholic Church. He was the devoted father of Mary O. Tucker of Avenue, MD and the late James F. Morris. He was the brother of Dora Gibson of Abell, MD, Eunice Guy of Loveville, MD, and the late Earl Morris, Frank Morris, John Morris and Bernard Morris. He is survived by 1 grandchild and 2 great grandchildren. Mr. Morris attended Holy Angels School. He was a waterman.

David Charles Usilton, 83, of Leonardtown, Maryland, died on Tuesday, January 02, 2001 at his residence.
Born on August 31, 1917 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Thomas B. Usilton, Sr. and Agnes G. West Usilton. Mr. Usilton was an Optician.
Mr. Usilton is survived by his wife; Kathleen Shannonhouse Usilton of Leonardtown, MD, four daughters; Patricia A. Bowes of Tall Timbers, Maryland, Susan E. Gateau of Mechanicsville, Maryland, Nancy R. VanDerWende of Leonardtown, Maryland, and Dana K. Vallandingham of California, Maryland, a son; D. Michael Usilton of Worton, Maryland, eighteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Rosalinda M. Usilton and Bernadine Anderson and two brothers; Thomas B. Usilton, Jr. and William Kenneth Usilton, Jr.

Benedict Joseph "Ben" Greenwell
Benedict Joseph "Ben" Greenwell, 56, of Lexington Park, Maryland died on Saturday, December 9, 2000 in Hughesville, Maryland.
Born on April 20, 1944, he was the son of the James Combs and Genevieve Norris Greenwell. Ben had operated the Sign of The Whale liquor store in Lexington Park for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela, four daughters; Jessica, Genevieve, Catherine and Carole, and three sons; James, Jonathon and Ben. He is survived by 11 siblings; Mary Combs McCarthy of Oklahoma City, OK, Kitty Lee Hurry Radford of Leonardtown, JoAnne Choporis of Compton, James Greenwell of Middletown, OH, Genevieve Norris of Leonardtown, Jefferson Greenwell of New Carrollton, Rose Wilson of Leonardtown, Frank Greenwell of Arlington, VA, Sybil Costanzo of Springfield, VA, Carole Wible of Hollywood and Elizabeth Matthews of Bryantown.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 17, 2000 from 3; 00 p.m. to 6; 00 p.m.at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A.in Leonardtown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 18, 2000 at 10; 00 a.m. in St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Leonardtown. Norman Frank Kraft
Norman Frank Kraft, 80, of Piney Point, Maryland, died at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, Maryland on Monday, December 11, 2000.
Born on March 24, 1920 in Washington, DC, to the late Norman Andrew and Etta Mae Dunkley Kraft. Mr. Kraft moved to St. Mary’s County in 1975 from Prince George’s County. He was a Police Officer for the Metropolitan Police Department retiring after 28 years on the force. Mr. Kraft was a member of the Mason’s Lodge #227 in Camp Springs, MD; he was also a member of the Association of Retired Police Officers of Washington, DC. and the VFW of the U.S. McKimmie-Catterton-Police-Fire Post # 2979, Inc.
Mr. Kraft is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Verna Swift Kraft of Piney Point, MD, whom he married on April 20, 1940 in Washington, DC. Three sons, Roger William Kraft of Piney Point, Maryland, Norman Charles Kraft of Bethesda, Maryland and Stephen Edward Kraft of Ellicott City, Maryland. One brother Charles Andrew Kraft of Edgewater, Maryland. Preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Lusk.
The family will receive friends today, Wednesday, December 13, 2000 from 4 to 8 pm in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. with prayers being recited at 7; 00 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2000 at 10; 00 am in St. George’s Episcopal Church, Valley, Maryland with Father Christopher Halliday officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Lincoln cemetery, Brentwood, Maryland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, St. Mary’s County Chapter, 503 E Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20006 and/or St. George’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 30, Valley Lee, MD 20692. Arrangements were provided by the Brinsfield Funeral Home in Leonardtown, Maryland
