Mary Elizabeth Harris, 91, of Newark, NJ, died on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ.
Born on March 24, 1913 in Helen, MD, she was the daughter of the late William Frank and Sarah Countiss Thomas. Mrs. Harris left St. Mary’s County as a young woman and lived and worked in Baltimore, MD. From there she moved to Newark, NJ where she remained until her death. She was a domestic worker for many years until she retired. Mrs. Harris served as a Eucharistic Minister in her church and visited residents of a nursing home until illness prevented her from doing so.
She is survived by her son, Joseph Harold Thomas, Sr. and daughter-in-law, Dorothy Thomas of Loveville, MD, a sister, Marie Baker of Mechanicsville, MD, two grandchildren, Joseph Harold Thomas, Jr. and Gilberta Campbell, and two great grandchildren, James C. Campbell, Jr. and Colby Thomas Campbell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Harris and three sisters, Louise Chase, Helen Miles and Veronica Woodland.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 21, 2004 from 9; 00 a.m. until 10; 00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Morganza, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10; 00 a.m. The Reverend John Mattingly will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Mary’s Queen of Peace cemetery in Helen, MD.
Serving as pallbearers will be Austin Baker, Benedict Baker, Joseph Bowman, Thomas Baker, Julius Bond and Michael Bond.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady the Queen of the Angels Church, 44 Irvine Turner Blvd., Newark, NJ 07103.

William Oscar “Pete” Sprinkle, Jr., 79
William Oscar “Pete” Sprinkle, Jr., 79, of California, MD, died on Saturday, May 15, 2004 at his residence.
Born on April 8, 1925 in Lexington, KY, he was the son of the late Rose and William Oscar Sprinkle, Sr. Mr. Sprinkle was a civil servant for the U.S. Government.
He is survived by a daughter, Suzan “Suzi” Sprinkle-Raley of Ridge, MD and a son William Bruce “Mike” Sprinkle of St. Petersburg, FL. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Georgia “Marcie” Sprinkle.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 20, 2004 from 10; 00 a.m. until 12 Noon at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD. A Graveside Service will be conducted on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf, MD. The Reverend Ken Walker will conduct the service.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Sprinkle, Harry Sprinkle, John Raley, Richard Mahone, Don Jenkins and Howard Norfolk.

Family and friends are invited back to the Sprinkle family home in California, MD from 4; 00 p.m. to 6; 00 p.m. to honor Pete and Marcie.

Sheri Lynn Johnson
Sheri Lynn Johnson of Mechanicsville, Maryland died suddenly on May 13, 2004 at Civista Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland. She was 24 years old.
Born October 15, 1979 in Leonardtown, Maryland to Mary P. (Pat) Gibbons and Robert E. (Bobby) Johnson. A Health Care Assistant, Sheri enjoyed NASCAR racing and was a fan of #20 Tony Stewart and singer Kenny Chesney.
In addition to her parents, Sheri is survived by her sister Kimberly Shannon Johnson; nephew Devin Brian Johnson Russell; grandparents Doris Gibbons, Elmer and Eva Johnson; aunts and uncles Gary & Linda Travers, Jimmy & Terry Gibbons, Larry & Glenda Hill, Glenn & Debbie Garner; first cousins Mike & Renee Mattingly, Jason & Chrissy Raley, Michelle Mattingly, Matt Hill, Lindsey Hill, Brady Garner, Kyle Garner and Korey Garner; second cousins Sierra Mattingly, Alexis Raley, Eric Raley, Grace Raley, Allison Gibbons, Adam Gibbons and Jasmine Berry.
Friends received Tuesday, May 18, 2004 from 2-4 & 5-8PM with Prayers 7PM at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A. 30195 Three Notch Road Charlotte Hall, Maryland. Funeral Services 11AM on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church at Laurel Grove 27108 Mt. Zion Church Road Mechanicsville, Maryland with Reverend Phil Ayers officiating. Interment Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery Laurel Grove in Mechanicsville, Maryland.

Earl Maxwell,
US Navy Veteran
Mr. Earl Edwin Maxwell, 74, a resident of Huntingtown, MD since 1977, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Maxwell; a daughter Karen Long, three step-daughters Barbara McVeigh, Joyce Thompson, and Carol Hendrick, two step-sons; George Thompson, Frank Thompson, a sister, Betty Maxwell and nine grandchildren. Mr. Maxwell retired from Safeway in 1978 and continued to work for the Bureau of Weights and Measures in Washington, DC retiring in 1989. He was a member of American Legion Post 206, BPOE Lodge 2620, Prince Frederick, MD and the Patuxent Moose Lodge. He served in the Navy from 1949 to 1953, stationed at Norfolk and worked as a radar technician. He loved dogs, working around the house, volunteering at Elks Dinners and traveling with his wife of 21years to Hawaii, Bermuda, Canada and the Caribbean.

On May 11, 2004. Beloved husband of the late Ethel Mae Windsand; loving father of Edgar David Windsand and Esther Karen Glotfelty; grandfather of seven, great- grandfather of nine; brother of Raymond Windsand, Ruth Helberg and Marie Herlich, all of Michigan.

Luise Marie Dartnell, 75, of Hollywood, MD, died on Monday, May 10, 2004 at her residence.
Born on March 26, 1929 in Norungen, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Friedrich and Katharina Bachmann Schlierf. She moved to St. Mary’s County from Kissimmee, Fl and attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington Park, MD. Mrs. Dartnell had worked as a hostess in the restaurant business. Her hobby was gardening.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorine Rita Riegel of Jacksonville, NC, two sons, Michael Frederick Roscoe of Hollywood, MD and Thomas Edward Roscoe of Fredericksburg, VA, eight grandchildren, two sisters, Heidi Williams of Ontario, Canada and Erika Fernandez of Farmers Branch, TX, and two brothers, Fritz Schlierf of Weinsberg, Germany and Karl Schlierf of Gerungen, Germany.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Thursday, May 13, 2004 at 1; 00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington Park, MD. Reverend Stephen Updegrave will conduct the service. Interment will be private.

Philip Ingraham Jones, II, 86
Philip Ingraham Jones, II, 86, of Lexington Park, MD died on Sunday, May 9, 2004 at his residence.
Born on October 22, 1917 in Portland, ME, he was the son of the late Lawrence C. and Mathilda E. Willig Jones.
Mr. Jones served his country for over 20 years in the United States Army, retiring as a Lt. Col. Receiving the Belgian Fouraguere, American Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, 8 Overseas Bars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, American Theater Ribbon Bronze Star Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaigne Medal. In 1963 he moved to St. Mary’s County from Virginia Beach, VA where he resided until his death. He was a toastmaster, he also was a member of the Patuxent River Naval Air Station Officers Club, Sailing Club and the Ski Club in Washington, DC.
He is survived by his wife Heidi M. Alibers Jones whom he married on January 27, 1961 in Oberammergau, Germany, one daughter, Claudine Jones of Pleasantville, NY, one grandson, Justin Hogarth and wife Paige also of Pleasantville, one brother, James Jones and wife Marjorie of Casco, ME, two sisters, Nathalia Powell and husband Bill of Nashua, NH and Helen C. Jones, of Baileys Island, ME.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 17, 2004 at 11; 35 am at St. Nicholas Chapel, Patuxent River Naval Air Station.

Visitation; Public Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 from 5 - 8 PM with prayers being held at 7; 00 PM and Fireman's Prayers at 7; 15 PM.
John Merrill Russell, Sr., 75, of Hollywood, MD died May 9, 2004 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born September 8, 1928 in Leonardtown, he was the son of the late George Wilson and Mary Magdaline Stone Russell. He was the husband of Peggy Beck Russell who he married on October 17, 1953 in Hollywood Methodist Church. He was the father of John M. Russell, Jr. of Leonardtown, Linda L. Reddinger of Butler, PA, Donna S. Russell of Tampa, FL and Marsha A. Russell of Hollywood. He was brother to Joseph M. Russell, Irene Dixon, Edith Wood and Marie Bailey, all of Leonardtown. He is also survived by three grandchildren. Mr. Russell was a lifelong St. Mary’s County resident and served in the United States Navy from 1946-1948. On September 8, 1993, he retired as a Manager from SMECO. He belonged to the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department and Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Chief. He was secretary/treasurer of his men’s bowling league and he enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Prayers were held on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at 7; 00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5 - 8 PM. A Funeral Service will be celebrated, Wednesday, May 12, 2004 in Hollywood United Methodist Church with Reverend Sheldon Reese officiating. Interment will follow in Joy Chapel cemetery. Contributions may be made to Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O.Box 79, Hollywood, MD 20636, Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Barbara Jean “Gin” Miller, 52, of Lexington Park, MD, formerly of Lafayette, LA, died May 8, 2004 in Lexington Park, MD. Born November 5, 1951 in Lafayette, LA she was the daughter of the late Lena and Wallace Cormier. She was the loving wife of Willie G. Miller whom she married July 16, 1987 in Las Vegas, NE. She was the devoted mother of Shallon Perkins and Sharmaine Miller of Lexington Park, MD. She was the sister of Wilbert Cormier of Lafayette, LA, Calvin Cormier of Atlanta, GA, Mildred Rotlt of Bridge, LA, Deloris Cormier of Columbus, GA, Patsy Bell of Nanaree, FL, and the late Joseph Cormier, Mary Cormier and Mable Cormier. Mrs. Miller graduated in 1970 from Paul Breaux High School and in 1993 moved to St. Mary’s County from Columbia, SC. Mrs. Miller was a General Clerk for Navair Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Funeral Services were held in Syrie Funeral Home in Lafayett, LA. Interment followed in Calvary cemetery, Lafayette, LA.

Thomas Clyde Bayne, 78,
Thomas Clyde Bayne, 78, of Ridge, MD died on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at his residence.
Born on November 24, 1925 in Scotland, MD he was the son of the late George Clyde and Nita Olivia Ridgell Bayne.
Mr. Bayne attended the St. Michael’s School in Ridge, MD. He served his country in the United States Army from 1944 until 1946, receiving an honorable discharge. Upon his release from the Army, he moved to Baltimore, MD where he worked for 37 years for the Baltimore City Fire Department as a firefighter. In 1986 he moved back to St. Mary’s County where he resided until his death. He was a member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Ridge, MD, a life member of the VFW Post # 6506 and the American Legion Post # 297.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Jean Scarbro Bayne, three children, Thomas F. Bayne of Ridge, MD, Theresa A. Fenhagen, of Lexington Park, MD and Barbara J. Winters, of Ridge, MD, two sisters, Ann B. Robrecht of Ridge, MD and Mary P. Walters of Albany, NY, seven grandchildren, Crystal M. Joseph, Amanda E. Joseph, Mary P. Joseph, Philip J. Bayne, Bradley T. Bayne, Tara A. Fenhagen and Mary N. Peale. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Margaret A. Cooper and a brother Joseph W. Bayne.
Family will receive friends on Monday, May 10, 2004 from 5; 00 until 8; 00 pm at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Ridge, MD. Prayers will be recited at 7; 00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at 11; 00 am. The Reverend Maurice O’Connell will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers for Mr. Bayne will be James Dickens, Robert Bayne, Robert Joseph, Jimmy Joy, Mike Hammett and Francis Reisler.

Reubin “Strick” Strickland, 65
Reubin “Strick” Strickland, 65 of Mechanicsville, MD died on May 1, 2004 at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, MD.
Brother as he was called during his growing up years, was born on September 7, 1938 in Magnolia, MS, he was the son of the late Rev. Willie Strickland and Rosa Strickland Hackett.
Strick was self-employed and worked as a carpenter until his health began to fail in 2000. He was one of the first builders to erect houses for “Jim Walter Homes, “ in St. Mary’s County and the Eastern Shore areas. He believed in sharing his knowledge by instructing all that worked with him the correct way of laying floors and roofing houses. His work can be seen through out the county as well as Virginia, Tennessee and as far west as California. His favorite pastimes were fishing at Point Lookout, Lewis Delaware on the rocks, hunting and spending time with friends under the old oak tree.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Strickland whom he married in 1979 in Leonardtown, MD, two daughters, Camisha Strickland of Longview, MD, and Moneta Strickland of Mechanicsville, MD, two sons, Joseph Cunningham of McComb, MS and Todd Holt and wife Camille of California, MD, five sisters, Alice Jefferson and husband Chubby of Pontiac, MI, Gertrude Martin of McComb, MS, Myrtle Robinson of Tacoma, WA, Emma Dixon of Magnolia, MS and Evelyn Strickland-Paige and husband William of McComb, MS, three brothers, Willie Strickland, Jr. of Weston, MS, Herbert Strickland and wife Yvonne of Osyka, MS and Alvin Strickland and wife Johnnie of Bakersfield, CA, seven grandchildren, sisters-in-laws, Phyllis Hopewell, Joan Jordan, Rose Waters and Bernadette Tyer, brothers-in-law, Joseph H. Jordan, Jr. and wife Blanche, Lawrence A. Jordan and wife Darlene, James G. Jordan and wife Jacqueline and Michael J. Jordan and wife Christine. In addition to his parents two daughters preceded him in death, Gita Strickland, Jacqueline Hall, one son, Robert E. Strickland, three sisters, Pearl Wilkerson, Rosa Witherspoon and Lula May Holmes-Caston.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 10, 2004 from 9; 00 until 11; 00 am at the First Missionary Baptist Church, Lexington Park, MD. A Funeral Service will be held at 11; 00 am. The Reverend Roderick McClanahan will officiate. Interment will be on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at the New Jerusalem cemetery, Magnolia, MS.
