John William Hersman, 57, of Lusby, MD died on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at his residence.
Born on May 18, 1946 in Clarksburg, WV, he was the son of Laura Ayersman Hersman of Clarksburg, WV and the late William H. Hersman.
Mr. Hersman graduated from the Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg, WV. He then attended West Virginia Wesleyan College graduating in 1968 with a BA in History, attended Fairmont State College in WV and Northwest Missouri State University obtaining degrees in Business Administration. Mr. Hersman served his country in the United States Navy retiring as a LCDR. From 1978 until 1980 he was Assistant Vice President in charge of construction loan portfolio at the First Annapolis Savings Bank. In 1983 he was promoted to Senior Vice President in charge of all loan department functions including commercial lending, residential lending and consumer lending, he held this position until 1985. In 1985 he became President of the Delta Financial Services Inc. a subsidiary of First Annapolis Savings Bank, in charge of real estate developments and joint venture projects. This position was held until 1987. Throughout his career he was also Chief real estate appraisal officer. From 1988 until 1991 he was President and equity partner of Anchor Capitol Group, where he developed residential and commercial real estate in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Prince Georges, Howard and Talbot Counties. In 1991 he opened the Maryland Appraiser Services Inc., which he ran with his wife Ruth until his death. Mr. Hersman held a Certified General Appraiser License in the State of Maryland, Washington, DC and Commonwealth of Virginia. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarksburg, WV, the Anne Arundel County, Economic Development Finance Committee, International Trade Committee and the Industrial Revenue Bond Committee. He also was involved in missionary work in Central America for many years.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Ruth E. Duff Hersman, a son, John Andrew Hersman of Catonsville, MD, a daughter, Megan M. Storer, of San Diego, CA and a step-son, Giovanni F. Del Alcazar of Baltimore, MD, a sister, Nancy Harvey and husband Don of Clarksburg, WV, two granddaughters, Isabella Hersman and Alexandrea Del Alcazar, a niece Jennifer Hogue and a nephew Matthew Harvey.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at 12; 00 noon at the Church of the Ascension, Lexington Park, MD. The Reverend Rona Harding will officiate. Interment will be private.

John Steven Claussen
John Steven Claussen, AMCS, USN, 41, of Lexington Park, MD died on Sunday, April 18, 2004 at his residence.
Born on November 18, 1962 in Albert Lea, MN, he was the son of and Darlene Felber Faber and Forrie Claussen and wife Gretchen all of Albert Lea, MN.
John was serving his country since 1983 in the United States Navy. In 2001 his orders brought him to Patuxent River Naval Air Station from Sigonella, Italy. He was a member of the Patuxent Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife Cheryl Ann Clelland Claussen, a daughter, Nicole Claussen of Williamsburg, VA, two sons, Stevie Claussen and John Claussen, II both of Lexington Park, MD, three siblings, Cherie Seyser, of Albert Lea, MN, Terry Claussen of Champlain, MN and Scott Claussen of Cottage Grove, MN.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 22, 2004 at the Bonnerup Funeral Home, 525 W Clark Street, Albert Lea, MN, A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 23, 2004 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, MN. Interment will be in the Graceland cemetery, Albert Lea, MN.

Maj. Milton Wolfman, US Army (Ret.),
WWII & Korean War Veteran
Maj. Milton Wolfman, US Army (Ret.), 84 of Hollywood, MD died on Monday, April 5, 2004 at his residence.
Born on July 5, 1919 in NY, NY, he was the son of the late Max and Clara Weimer Wolfman.
Mr. Wolfman served his country in the United States Army from 1941 until 1963. Serving both in WWII and the Korean War. He served in the Northern France, Normandy, Central Europe, Ardennes and the Rhineland Campaigns, receiving the Silver Star, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Bronze Star Cluster, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Bronze Star Medal w/ First Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart w/ First Oak Leaf along with numerous other decorations and citations for his performance and outstanding service. His superior administrative and executive skills contributed immeasurably to the successful operation of the United States Army Garrison and its assigned and attached units. He consistently and successfully solved the complex problems inherent in operating a heterogeneous command consisting of 3, 000 officers and enlisted personnel assigned to 15 units. As a result of his thorough planning and supervision, he raised the standards of administration in the units directly subordinate to his headquarters. His leadership in this capacity contributed greatly to the successful and efficient operation of Garrison. In 1963 he retired from the United States Army at the rank of Major. In 1980 Mr. Wolfman moved from Oxon Hill, MD to St. Mary’s County where he enjoyed fishing and gardening. His favorite enjoyment was the company of his family.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Lucille Jenkins Talbert Wolfman whom he married on May 7, 1979 in Bryantown, MD, two daughters, Susan Wolfman of Fort Worth, TX, and Ursula Sherree Wolfman of Hollywood, MD, two sons, Wally Talbert of Temple Hills, MD and Thomas Talbert of Crampton, KY, one sister, Alberta Sherman of Norwich, CT, two brothers, Emmanuel Wolfman of West Melbourne, FL, and Nathan Wolfman of Norwich, CT, 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, George Talbert, two brothers, Harry Wolfman and Myer Wolfman, two sisters, Beatrice Wolfman and Katherine Handleman.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 17, 2004 from 4; 00 until 6; 00 pm at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. A Memorial Service will be held at 5; 00 pm in the Brinsfield Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be private.

Ronald Alvin Bowie, 70, of Indian Head died March 25, 2004 at his home. Mr. Bowie was a self-employed farmer. Born October 17, 1933, in Marbury, he was the son of the late Harry Benjamin Bowie and the late Alice Albert Rye Bowie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Alberta Bowie, and Selma Edythe Bowie Monroe. He is survived by his brothers, Eillis H. Bowie, of Indian Head, Roland Alva Bowie, of Riverside, and Elwyn Geral Bowie, of Port Tobacco; sister, Myra Elaine Bowie Miller, of Bowie; six nephews and four nieces. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 28 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata. Service will be Monday, March 29 at 11 a.m. at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeff Perry will officiate. Burial will take place at Nanjemoy Baptist Church, Nanjemoy. Marjorie Richardson Jenkins
82, of La Plata
Margorie Richardson Jenkins, 82, of La Plata died March 23, 2004, at Assistant Living, Waldorf. She was a progan analyst. She worked at the Naval Ordnance Station, Navy Department and Pentagon. She was a member of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church and the ladies auxiliary of Physicians Memorial Hospital. She lived in Indian Head from 1955 until 2000. She loved her grandchildren, traveling to Florida, and gardening. Born March 7, 1922, in Mechanicsville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. Richardson and the late Pearl Quade Richardson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard I. Jenkins; daughter, Sharon Jenkins; brother, Raymond Richardson; and sister, Viola Kidwell. She is survived by her son, David Howard Jenkins; daughter-in-law; Maureen Jenkins; grandchildren, Alison Lewis, Meghan Jenkins and U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. David Jenkins Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Olivia Lewis and Braeden Lewis. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. March 27 at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata. The Rev. Albert Tompa will officiate. Burial will take place at 11 a.m. March 31 at Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va. Dolores Jane “Jeannie” Langley
Dolores Jane “Jeannie” Langley, 59, of Great Mills, MD died on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at her residence.
Born on August 20, 1944 in Fairmont, WV, she was the daughter of the late William M. and Hazel Kendall Hutson.
Mrs. Langley moved to St. Mary’s County in 1959 from WV. She was a member of the Holy Face Catholic Church, Great Mills, MD. She was an active volunteer at the Little Flower School the years that her children spent there. She also spent her evenings reading the bible. Jeannie loved to cook big meals for her family and friends and enjoyed having cookouts. She also had a pot of coffee ready for visitors. She spent many years helping her friends by caring for their children. Jeannie helped run the farm and also enjoyed raising animals. She was excellent at canning the vegetables that grew in her garden. She loved country music and especially enjoyed attending the county fair. Jeannie could never do enough for her boys Mike and Tommy, and she loved her daughter in law Faith, and her two granddaughters Elizabeth and Amanda. It was very important for her to have a clean home that was always open to friends and family. One of her favorite past times was collecting old glass, especially Depression glass.
She is survived by her husband Francis Vernon Langley whom she married on October 14, 1960, two sons, Thomas Roland Langley and Michael Troy Langley both of Great Mills, MD, two sisters, Thelma Joan White, of Duck, WV and Sandra Sue Obercker of Olmstead Falls, OH, two grandchildren, Elizabeth Wathen and Amanda Langley also survive. In addition to her parents three brothers, William McKinley Hutson, Kenneth Lee Hutson and Frank Hutson, preceded her in death.
Friends may call on Friday, March 19, 2004 at the Holy Face Catholic Church, Great Mills, MD from 5; 00 until 8; 00 pm. Prayers will be recited at 7; 00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 11; 00 am. The Reverend Kevin O’Reilly will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Gerald Leo Roberts
Gerald Leo Roberts of Mechanicsville, MD died on March 18, 2004 at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC after a long battle with leukemia. He was 54 years old. Photo
Gerald Roberts, loving known as “Jerry” was born in Houston, Texas on February 20, 1950. He was the son of the late Bernard and Marie Roberts.
Gerald was a long time resident of St. Mary’s County where he owned and operated Firemen’s Chimney Sweeps for over twenty years. His hobbies included tropical fish, ponds, trains, ships and spending time at his home with family and friends. He was once a member of the Mechanicsville Optimist Club.
He is survived by his wife Valli Roberts; three children Kimberly Rye, Kevin Roberts and Darlene Yurko; two step-children Devon O’Brien and Lindsay Bradley; one brother Dennis Roberts; eight grandchildren Alicia Ayers, Lynsey Rye, Kevin Roberts, MacKenzie Roberts, Gavin Yurko, Jeda Yurko, Madeline Bradley and Jack O’Brien.
Family will receive friends on Monday, March 22, 2004 from 6 to 8PM at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A. 30195 Three Notch Road Charlotte Hall, Maryland with Prayers at 7PM. Sarah Evelyn Mason-Butler, 83
Sarah Evelyn Mason-Butler, 83, of Leonardtown, MD died on March 15, 2004 at the St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD.
Born on April 7, 1920 in Loveville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lena Sommerville Mason.
Mrs. Butler was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. Her family and friends affectionately knew her as “Tom”. She received her education from St. Joseph’s Colored Elementary School in Morganza, MD and completed her education at Banneker High School, in Loveville, MD. Mrs. Butler’s primary occupation was a cook for the Xavierian Brothers and St. Mary’s Ryken Catholic School for 42 years. After retirement she enjoyed playing cards, her favorite game was pitch. Her most enjoyment came from traveling to the casinos in Las Vegas, Lauflen NV, Atlantic City, NJ and Dover, DE. She spent these times with her closest friend Dorothy Fenwick and members of her family. She also found great pleasure in spending time with her cousins, Vincena Dickerson and Mary Francis known as “Mix” Baker. Her happiness came from being around her friends and family, discussing old times, cooking soul food, playing Fats Domino’s music and her special song “O Danny Boy”. Sarah’s love for people was shown through her caring heart. She was of the Catholic Faith and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Morganza, MD.
She is survived by her children, Mildred Gross, of Leonardtown, MD, James Edward Butler, Jr. of Leonardtown, MD, David Anthony Butler, of Loveville, MD, Francis Lionel Butler, of Loveville, MD and Agnes Mason of Mechanicsville, MD, two step daughters, Mary Holton of Loveville, MD and Barbara Neale of Fort Washington, MD, a brother, John Ernest “Snack” Berry of Loveville, MD, 17 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren also survive. She also leaves behind Andrew Courtney whom she raised for many years, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. In addition to her parents in 1978 she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Cullins Butler, Sr. whom she married in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, on October 27, 1940, and a son Rudolph DeSales Butler, five sisters, Helen, Dorsey, Elizabeth, Mildred and Agnes (Bugins) Mason, six brothers, Leonard Mason, Paul Vincent Berry, James Henry Berry, Joseph Edward Berry and Joseph Walker Berry.
Friends may call on Saturday, March 20, 2004 from 8; 30 am until 10; 00 am at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Morganza, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10; 00 am. The Reverend David Werning will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the Queen of Peace cemetery, Helen, MD.
Pallbearers for Mrs. Butler will be her grandsons, Donald Gross, David Butler, Jr., Craig Brown, William Butler, Marcus Gross and Marvin Butler. Honorary Pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Stephanie Gross, Kimberly Jones, Angela Fenwick, Sarah Barber-Young, Leslie Gross and Elizabeth Butler.

Lillian C. Wright
WWII Navy Veteran
Lillian C. Wright of Charlotte Hall, Maryland formerly of Fort Washington, Maryland died on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at the Bayside Nursing Center in Lexington Park, Maryland. She was 81 years old.
Born May 19, 1922 in New Haven, Connecticut to the late Anna and Joseph Colos. She attended and graduated from New Haven Commercial High School (Class of 1940) and Stone Business College of New Haven, Connecticut (Class of 1941). She proudly served in the U. S. Navy and during World War II until she was Honorably Discharged in 1946 as Yeoman First Class. She was awarded the Victory Medal and the American Campaign Ribbon. Mrs. Wright was the Secretary to the Commissioner of the Federal Power Commission. She was of the Catholic faith and a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Piscataway.
In addition to her parents, her husband Laurence C. Wright preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter Joyce Ann and her husband Elliott Westberry of Bel Alton, MD; brother Robert Colos of Wallingford, CT; grandchildren David Westberry and Cristie Intrabartolo; great grandchildren Evelyn Lillian and Victoria Grace.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 22, 2004 at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A. 30195 Three Notch Road Charlotte Hall, MD at 11AM. Interment to follow at Cedar Hill cemetery Suitland, MD with U. S. Navy Honors.

Gerald “Jerry” Russell Taylor
Gerald “Jerry” Russell Taylor, 70, of Leonardtown, MD, died on Saturday, March 13, 2004 at his residence.
Born on April 13, 1933 in Terra Alta, WV, he was the son of the late Russell McKinley Taylor and Marie Inez Swiger Taylor. He was the husband of Celia Hawes Taylor, whom he married in 1993 in Chaptico, MD. He is also survived by his two sons from his first marriage to the late Roma Faye Shockley Taylor; Scott D. Taylor of Mt. Airy, NC and Gregory G. Taylor of New Braunfels, TX and their wives Sandy S. Taylor and Margaret W. Taylor, respectively, and three grandchildren, Briana B. Taylor, Jordan C. Taylor and Hallie E. Taylor, 5 step-grandchildren, and 3 step- great grandchildren. He was also step- parent to Geoffrey P. Jugel of Bowie MD.
Mr. Taylor is also survived by his sister, Doris A. Long of Frederick, MD and nephews, Dennis P. Long of Stafford, VA, Robert G. Long and Kenneth J. Long of Frederick, MD and Jeffrey B. Long of Brunswick, MD.
Mr. Taylor graduated from McKinley High School in Washington, DC in 1951. He was employed with the Department of the Army, Ordnance Development Division in Maryland. He served in the U.S. Army from January 6, 1954 until his honorable discharge on January 5, 1956. He then attended the Capitol Radio Engineering Institute in Washington, D.C., earning an Associate Degree in Radio Engineering. Mr Taylor was employed with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD from 1967 until his retirement in 1996 with 29 years of service. He was the recipient of many awards, honors and accolades during his years of service with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as a Senior Electronics Technician.
Mr. Taylor moved with his wife from Rockville, MD to St. Mary’s County in 1996 after his retirement. He enjoyed photography, travel, woodworking, boating, camping, his farm tractors, gardening and trains, as well as spending time with family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening in the funeral home chapel. Father William J. Neat, Pastor of Christ Episcopal Church in Chaptico, MD will conduct the service.
Inurnment will be on Thursday, March 25, 2004 at 3 p.m. at Arlington National cemetery.

Sam Joseph Belintende
Sam Joseph Belintende, 90, of Leonardtown, MD, died on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, MD.
Born on March 21, 1913 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Joseph and Frances Nicastro Belintende who immigrated from Italy in 1905. Sam attended Eastern High School from 1928 to 1932. He played football there and on various other teams in the D.C. area. He was a member of the N.E. Boys Club.
Sam was an Apprentice Machinist at the Washington Navy Yard in 1936. In 1943 he was transferred to Tampa, FL as an Ordnance Inspector, specializing in the installation of 5”and .38 caliber guns on new U.S. Naval ships being built in Tampa. After returning to Washington, he worked at the U.S. Research Laboratory for a brief time and then transferred to the U.S. Naval Observatory as an instrument maker until his retirement as a Supervisor in 1968.
Sam is survived by his sister, Mrs. Carmilla Wehausen of Capital Heights, MD and several nieces and nephews. His nephew, Mr. George Carroll shared his home with him at Piney Point, MD and at the present address in Leonardtown, MD.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD. Prayers will be recited at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11; 00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bushwood, MD. The Reverend Francis J. Early will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens in Leonardtown, MD.
