Mary Elizabeth Jordan, (Bessie) 78, of Oakville, MD, died on March 1, 2003 at the St. Mary's Hospital, Leonardtown, MD.
She was born on June 16, 1924 in Baltimore, MD, the daughter of the late May A. Holt and Pearless Gray.
Mrs. Jordan was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Morganza, MD and a pillar of the community. She was a homemaker.
Her children, Phyllis Jordan Hopewell of Mechanicsville, MD, Joan B. Jordan of Oakville, MD, Joseph H. Jordan, Jr., of Oakville, MD, Thelma Jordan Strickland, of Mechanicsville, MD, Rose L. Waters of Columbia, MD, Lawrence A. Jordan of Fort Washington, MD, James G. Jordan of Hinesville, GA, Michael J. Jordan of Leonardtown, MD and Bernadette Jordan Tyer of Valdosta, GA, 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends survive her. In addition to her parents her husband Joseph H. Jordan, Sr. died on November 20, 1980. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Friday March 7, 2003 with the Reverend John Mattingly the celebrant. Interment followed at the Queen of Peace cemetery, Helen, MD.
Pallbearers for Mrs. Jordan were Thomas Bush, Ralph Barber, Howard Kennedy, Kevin Fenwick, Anthony Fenwick, Preston Tyer and Thomas L. Thompson; honorary pallbearers were James Todd Holt, Preston A. Tyer, Jr., James G. Jordan, Jr., Michael J. Jordan, Jr., Lawrence A. Jordan, Jr., Kenneth Waters, and Joseph Michael Jordan.

Marian Louise Ohm Wathen
Marian Louise Ohm Wathen, 83 passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2003 at Solomons Nursing Center of complications of Parkinson's disease and a recent stroke.
She was born on February 21, 1920 in Washington, DC, the daughter of the late Clarence W. Ohm, Sr. and Pearl G. Martin Ohm.
In 1942 she married James R. 'Spriggy' Wathen of Compton. They moved to St. Clements Shores in 1949, where she resided until her illness prompted her move to Cedar Lane Apt. in Leonardtown in 1996.
A graduate of Eastern High School, she was also a licensed cosmetologist. She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as Postmaster at the Compton Post Office from 1957 until her retirement in 1981. After her retirement she was an active member of the American Red Cross, frequently assisting with the local blood drives. She was an active member of the Triangle Homemakers Club in Compton. She loved boating, ice skating in her younger years. Her favorite hobbies were sewing and crocheting. She liked to travel and her favorite trips had been to Disney World with her great-grandchildren in the last few years. She was a devoted Sunday School teacher at St. Paul's Methodist Church for many years.
Surviving her are her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Sue Guy and Joseph 'Teeny' Guy of Medleys Neck, Grandson Randy Guy and wife Sandy, Grandson Kevin Guy and fiancee Tammy Gash all of Medleys Neck and her adored great grandchildren, Austin Guy and Sydney Guy. Other survivors include brothers-in-law Arthur Coker of Camp Springs, Francis M. Wathen and wife Alberta of Compton, sisters-in-law Hilda Merrits of Leonardtown, Jeanne Wathen of Alexandria, VA and Rose Mary Abell of Compton, special nieces and nephews Linda and Bob Sisson, Edward Ohm, Jr., Donna Sloper, Dorothy Cline, Michael Merrits, Beth Marvin, Andrea Buckingham, Pete Wathen, Sharon Oblisk and many great nieces and nephews. Her husband and her siblings, Clarence Ohm, Jr., Edward Ohm, Sr. and Dorothy Coker preceded her in death.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 6th from 3; 00 to 8; 00 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., with a prayer service at 7; 00 p.m. Reverend Stan Cardwell will conduct a Funeral Service was held Friday at St. Paul's
Methodist Church, Leonardtown, MD. Interment in St. Francis Xavier Catholic cemetery in Compton. Pallbearers for Mrs. Wathen were Kevin Guy, Randy Guy, Edward Ohm, Jr., Mark Sloper, Michael Merrits and Pete Wathen. Honorary Pallbearers were Buddy Banagan, Jeff Banagan, Kevin Banagan, Scott Greenwell, David Sisson and Sean McNeal. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Methodist Church, P.O. Hampton Milstead, 89,
US Navy WWII Veteran
Mr. Hampton Bicknell Milstead, age 89, of Hughesville, Md., died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at his residence.
Born November 17, 1913 in Ironsides, Maryland to the late Josephus Milstead and the late Lizzie (Simmons) Milstead. He was a member of the 1932 graduating class of the La Plata High School.
He began his 43 year career with the Maryland State Highway Administration in 1935. Working his way up to Highway Maintainence Supervisor for Charles County. He retired in 1978. Mr. Milstead served as a Motor Machinist Mate in the Navy Sea Bees during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater. He was Honorably Discharged in 1945.
Mr. Milstead was deeply involved in community affairs. He was a Charter Member of the American Legion Jameson-Harrison Post 238 in Hughesville, MD where he served in various positions including terms as Commander and Finance Officer. He truly enjoyed the many years involved in the American Legion work and made many long-lasting friendships. He was a Charter Member of the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department and was the Department's Engineer for many, many years, helping to fight numerous fires in the County. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose Lodge and 40&8.
Mr. Milstead married Mary Cecilia Huntington on November 18, 1938. This year they would have celebrated their 65th Anniversary.
He survived by his wife Mary Cecelia Milstead; daughter V. Elaine Yeager and her husband Donald F. Yeager of Brandywine, MD; son, David L. and his wife Diane M. Milstead of La Plata, MD; grandchildren Julie B. Milstead, a Senior at Radford University and Lance Corporal Jacob D. Milstead currently serving on the U.S.S. Iwo Jima with the U. S. Marine Corps.
A funeral service was held March 3, 2003 with interment will be at Maryland Veterans cemetery in Cheltenham, Md. tomorow, Monday, March 10, 2003 at 11AM with Military Honors.

John Joseph Hayden, 84
John Joseph Hayden, 84 of Leonardtown, MD, died on Sunday, March 2, 2003 at his home.
Born August 16, 1918 in Dryden, MD, he was the son of the late Joseph Ignatius and Bertha A. Sheehan Hayden.
Mr. Hayden attended Leonard Hall and St. Mary's Academy. After graduating he went to work on the family farm in 1957 he went to work at Bee's Auto Supply as a Parts Manager, then in 1967 he joined his brother Frank Hayden at Haydens Auto Supply until his retirement in 1992.
Mr. Hayden is survived by his wife Mabel Loretta Cheseldine Hayden whom he married on December 29, 1942 in Holy Angels Catholic Church, two sons James R. Hayden of Bushwood, MD, Charles Hayden of Hollywood, MD, five grandchildren, Jamie, Jesse, Jody, Jennifer and Brandon Hayden and one great-grandchildren Mykala Hayden. Four brothers and sisters, Stanton I. Hayden, Sr., Ellen Robinson, Walter Vincent Hayden and Frank A. Hayden, preceded Mr. Hayden in death.. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, March 6th at 10; 00 in St. Aloysius Catholic Church with Father Rory Conley as the celebrant. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Hayden were, Jamie Hayden, Jodi Hayden, Brandon Hayden, Jennifer Hayden, Jesse Hayden and Ricky Hayden. Honorary pallbearers were, Bobby Mattingly, John F. Cecelia Margaret Norris,
86, of La Plata
Cecelia Margaret Norris, 86, of La Plata died July 31, 2004 at Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, La Plata. She was a homemaker. She was one of the founding members of the Ladies of Charity, she volunteered with the Red Cross. Born December 14, 1917, in Rock Point, MD, she was the daughter of the late Yock Stine and the late Ida Stine. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Miles B. Norris, Sr.; brothers, Adrian Stine, Jody Stine, Charles Stine; sisters, Hilda Lomax, Irene Coulby; and grandchild, Dale R. Norris. She is survived by her son, Miles B. Norris, Jr., of Cobb Island; brother, James M. Stine, of Cobb Island; two grandchildren, Brian K. Norris and Scott A. Norris; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 4 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with prayers at 7 p.m. at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata. Mass of Christian Buiral will be held Thursday, Aug. 5 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Issue at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be John R. Coulby, Mike Stine, Walter Ruppecht, Adrian Coulby, Roger Norris and David T. Hayden. Memorial contributions may be made to Charles County Nursing Home, 10200 La Plata Road, La Plata, MD 20646. Donna Marie Wardell, 67
Donna Marie Wardell, 67, of Lexington Park, MD died July 31, 2004 in Leonardtown, MD. Born on December 29, 1936 in Jackson, California, she is the daughter of Mary Delphine Kosich of Sacramento, California and the late Peter Mitchell Kosich.
She was the wife of the late Rone Nephi Wardell whom she married on March 5, 1957 in Carson City, Nevada. Mrs. Wardell is survived by her children, Jeff Allan Wardell of Lexington Park, MD, Paul Eugene Wardell and Wendy Wardell of Mays Landing, NJ and James Mitchell Wardell and Beth Wardell of Sanford, NC.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kenneth Wardell of Mays Landing, NJ and Megan and Alison Wardell of Sanford, NC. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sheila Day of Davis, CA. She was a graduate of Jackson High School Class of 1954.
Mrs. Wardell has been a resident of St. Mary’s County since October 1972 when she relocated from Connecticut. She was employed for 32 years with the U. S. Government in the Accounting Branch of the Public Works Department. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
Family will receive visitors from 4; 30 to 6; 00 PM on Friday, August 6, 2004 in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home where a Memorial Service will be conducted at 6; 00 PM with Chaplain Jon Rozema officiating. Howard Bowers, U.S. Navy Pearl Harbor SurvivorwpeE.jpg (10042 bytes)
The USS Tennessee survived the attack on Pearl Harbor even though it was hit by two major bombs. Howard Bowers was a crewman and was instrumental in putting out the heavy fires onboard the ship. He was a member of the American Legion in Chesapeake Beach.
Howard Bowers was born on August 13, 1919 in Newark, New Jersey. Howard died on July 28, 2004 at his home in Camp Springs, Maryland of cancer.
Howard is preceded in death by his son David Bowers, Mother Edith(Williams) Bowers; father Edward Bowers, and his 3 brothers, Edward Joseph Bowers, Kenneth Arthur Bowers, and Donald Charles Bowers.
He is survived by his devoted wife Valentine Bowers, stepsons and (wives), Robert JC (Sherie) Robey and Gary L. (Diane) Robey. Grandchildren; Robert C. (Kim) Robey; Michael (Deneen) Gordon; Robert E. Robey, Jamie Robey, Jessica Robey, Christina Robey, Kimberly Robey, Chris Ressler and one great grandchild. Additionally, Mr. Bowers is survived by two sisters Lorraine Miller and Mildred Chura and many nieces and nephews.
Chief Petty Officer, Bowers is a Pearl Harbor Survivor. He was stationed on the USS Tennessee during the Pearl Harbor Attack. In 1957 he transferred to the Naval Fleet Reserve in Washington, DC. He began his service in he US Navy June 3, 1938 and retired July 14, 1958. He was stationed on board the USS Tennessee when she was attacked. Prior to the invasion, Mr. Bowers and another sailor, Donald Efton Koger were taking a break sitting on the Gun Turrets. Her gun turrets could be elevated to 30 degrees, rather than the 15 degrees of earlier battleships, which meant her heavy guns, could reach an additional 10, 000 yards.
On the morning of December 7, 1941, the USS Tennessee was moored starboard side to a pair of masonry "Mooring quay" on Battleship Row, the name given to a line of deep water berths located along the southeast side of Ford Island. USS West Virginia was berthed alongside to port. Just ahead of the USS Tennessee was the USS Maryland, with USS Oklahoma outboard. USS Arizona moored directly astern of Tennessee, was undergoing a period of upkeep for the repair ship USS Vestal, berthed beside her. The "three nests" were space about 75 feet apart.
At about 0755, Mr. Bowers and his friend saw the Japanese carrier planes begin their attack. It took about five minutes for the antiaircraft guns to be manned and firing. The Tennessee could not move due to the Oklahoma and the West Virginia damage. The Tennessee's stern and port quarter were soon surrounded by heavy dense black smoke.At 0830 The Tennessee received two hits from horizontal bombers.One bomb carried away the after main yard before passing through the catapult on top of gun Turret III, the elevated after turret, breaking up as it partially penetrated the armored turret top. Instead of exploding, the bomb filler ignited and burned, setting as intense fire which was quickly extinguished through the leadership of Mr. Bowers. The second bomb struck the barrel of the center gun of Turret II, the forward "high" turret, and exploded. The center gun was knocked out of action and bomb fragments sprayed the Tennessee' forward superstructure. The shipboard burning was brought was brought under control by 1030. It was not until December 20, that the USS Tennessee was able to depart from Pearl Harbor to Puget Sound Navy Yard For repairs.
Through out his naval career, CPO Bowers earned many ribbons and awards. some of them are for Korean Service, World War II Service 1941-19445, European -African Campaigns; Middle Eastern Campaigns, China Service, Asian- Pacific Campaign and the Pearl Harbor Campaign.
Howard gave dedication, honor to all Americans that served and serve in the Military, whose lives were lost with valor, as well as those that were injured and survived. He leaves behind a legacy of whick we are all so proud.
Mr. Bowers was an active member in the Stallings-Williams American Legion Post 206 Chesapeake Beach, Malryland; The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association- Maryland Chapter#1; and the Fleet Reserve Association, US Navy Branch 24 Annapolis Maryland; and Cheltenham United Methodist Church.
In the true American Spirit, Remeber Pearl Harbor and the sacrifices that many made.

John Aloysius Lacey, Sr. 65
John Aloysius Lacey, Sr. 65 of Leonardtown, MD died on Sunday August 1, 2004 at his residence.
Born on March 19, 1939 in Bushwood, MD, he was the son of the late William Dudley and Mary Elsie Knott Lacey.
A life long resident of St. Mary’s County, Mr Knott was employed as a meat cutter at McKay’s Foods from 1961 until 1965. He than was employed at the A & P from 1965 until he retired in 1985.
He is survived by his children, Theresa Marie Lacey, of Hollywood, MD, John Aloysius Lacey, Jr. of Lawrenceville, GA, and Dale Edward Lacey of Chula Vista, CA, three sisters, Mildred Vallandingham of Helen, MD, Gladys Johnson of Hollywood, MD and Betty Jean Cusic of Mechanicsville, MD, one brother, W. Frances Lacey of Hollywood, MD, five grandchildren also survive. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, David Scott Lacey., two sisters, Lucille Bushell, and Grace Smythers, three brothers, W. Godfrey Lacey, Paul B. Lacey and Joseph D. Lacey.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 2, 2004 from 5; 00 until 8; 00 pm at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. Prayers will be recited at 7; 00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at Our Lady’s Church, Medleys Neck at 11; 00 am. The Reverend John Barry will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.

On July 28, 2004. Beloved mother of Thomas A. Smoot and his wife, Lynne and David B. Smoot; grandmother of Christine R. Smoot, Byron D. Smoot, Melissa Tarburton and her husband Randy, T. THOMAS PAUL MARZILLI
US Navy Veteran
Thomas Paul Marzilli was born in Worcester, MA on January 22, 1956. He is the son of Antoinetti (Mazzone) Palermo and stepfather of, Samuel Palermo and the late Thomas Paul Marzilli, Sr.
Tom attended High School at St. Johns in Shrewsbury, MA playing football and baseball. He continued his education at Erckerd College where he played baseball, his first love. He played summer ball in the Cape Cod League playing for Yarmouth-Dennis. Tom received his MA in criminal justice at East Carolina University.
Tom went to work for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in July 1987 where the job was never work, it was an adventure taking he and his family around the world. He served his country proudly during the 1990 Gulf aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt and in the Albania Kosovo Conflict in 1999.
While overseas, Tom served as the Supervisory Special Agent in charge of Operations for England and Western Europe. Upon returning to the U.S. he rose to the level of Deputy Director of the Multiple Threat Alert Center in Washington, D.C.
Tom was married to Karen (Kietzman) Marzilli on July 14, 1984. He and Karen were blessed with three wonderful children, Thomas, Anthony and Marisa of the home. Tom faithfully and lovingly coached his children from T-ball to the present as assistant coach of the Calvert American Legion instilling in them the power and strength and discipline of team work.
Tom leaves a large and wonderful family. His sister Michele (Marzilli) Werme and brother-in-law, James Werme, his brother Anthony Marzilli and sister-in-law Elaine (Salerno) Marzilli, his brother Joseph and sister-in-law Peggy (Trautman) Marzilli, step-brother Joseph Palermo and step-sister Elaine (Palermo) Hamel.
Tom leaves his nephews, Tom Werme and wife Kristin (Varin) Werme, James Werme, Thomas Marzilli, Christopher Marzilli, Joseph Marzilli and his nieces Stacey Lynn Marzilli and Meredith Marzilli. Tom also leaves his great nephew Cameron Werme and great niece Olivia Werme.
Tom also leaves his mother-in-law Mary Buckmaster Kietzman, brother-in-law Douglas Kietzman and nephew Christpher Kietzman of Swansboro, North Carolina.

Norris Jay Hanks, Col., U.S.A.F. Retired, 77
Norris Jay Hanks, Col., U.S.A.F. Retired, 77, of Hollywood, Maryland died on Monday July 26, 2004 at his residence.
He was born on February 19, 1927 in Marysville, Michigan to Norris and Mary Wickham Hanks. Col. Hanks was in the Air Force for 28 years having served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, retiring in 1978 as a fighter pilot and a test pilot. He was the recipient of many decorations and service medals including the World War II Victory Medal and two Bronze Service Stars.
He is survived by his children David E. Hanks of West Hills, CA and Gail B. Peters of Richmond, VA; brother, William Wickham Hanks of Fairfax, VA and three grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Col. Hanks was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Mary Elizabeth Keating Hanks and son, William Norris Hanks.
A graveside service will be held on Friday August 13, 2004 at Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, VA at 11; 00 a.m. where he will receive United States Air Force honors.
