James Matthew Blair, Jr., 46
James Matthew Blair, Jr., 46, formally of St. Inigoes, died on Monday, July 26, 2004 at his residence in Annapolis, MD.
Born on September 26, 1957 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of Marian Ann Unkle Blair and James Matthew Blair, Sr. of St. Inigoes, MD.
As a child, he attended St. Michael’s School in Ridge, MD and Leonard Hall Junior Naval Academy in Leonardtown, MD. He graduated from Ryken High School in Leonardtown, MD in 1975. Mr. Blair received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1981. He was Certified as a Public Accountant in the State of Maryland in 1982. He served as comptroller for large corporations as well as principal of his own accounting firm. Mr. Blair loved watching movies, traveling and being with his family. He was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Terrie and her husband Ron Harney of St. Inigoes, MD, Susan and her husband Bob Dudley, nephews Bobby and Eric and niece Sarah of Hollywood, MD and Betsy and her husband Hector Saradpon of Owings Mills, MD.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 29, 2004 from 5; 00 p.m. until 8; 00 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD. Prayers will be recited at 7; 00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 30, 2004 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Ridge, MD at 11; 00 a.m. The Reverend Maurice O’Connell will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Rayner Blair, Joey Blair, Ricky Blair, Bill Bailey, Ben Unkle and Brian Tarleton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Monsignor John B. Peacock Memorial School Fund, P.O. Box 429, Ridge, MD 20680 or the American Diabetes Association, Maryland Area Office, 3120 Timanus Lane, Suite 106, Baltimore, MD 21244.

Thomas Francis Knott, 52
Thomas Francis Knott, 52, of Park Hall, MD died on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the Genesis Elder Care, Laplata, MD.
Born on January 21, 1952 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of the late Francis and Goldia Sexton Knott.
Thomas served his country in the United States Army receiving an honorable discharge. He received the Expert Rifle and the National Defense Service Medal. He worked as a carpenter.
He is survived by three sons, Stephen Thomas Knott of California, MD, Kevin M. Knott of Lexington Park, MD and Richard D. Knott of Leonardtown, MD, two brothers, Edward C. Knott of Great Mills, MD and Robert J. Knott of Park Hall, MD. Five grandchildren also survive.
The family will receive friends on Monday July 26, 2004 from 3; 00 until 4; 00 pm at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. A funeral service will be conducted at 4; 00 pm. Deacon Thomas Spaulding will officiate. Interment will be private.

Gladys Irene Plauger
Gladys Irene Plauger of Mechanicsville, Maryland, formerly of Clinton, Maryland died on Friday, July 23, 2004 at her home. She was 81 years old.
Born November 11, 1922 in Clinton, Maryland to the late Jessie Mae Snoots and Warren Mullikin. She was a homemaker and mom who loved to sew, to cook and make quilts. Mrs. Plauger was a life long member of Christ Episcopal Church in Clinton, Maryland. She was known by all as "Grandma".
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Plauger was preceded in death by her husband William and great granddaughter Traci.
She is survived by her daughters Virginia Tayman, Dorothy Corder and Kay Jett; sister Linda Stone; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; numerous relatives and friends.
Family will receive friends on Monday, July 26, 2004 from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A. 30195 Three Notch Road Charlotte Hall, Maryland where Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 with the Reverend E. Ken Booth officiating. Interment to follow at Christ Episcopal Church cemetery in Clinton, Maryland.
Memorial contributions may be made to OPIS Center at St. Mary's Hospital P. O. Box 572 Leonardtown, Maryland 20650.

Educator M. William Runyon,
82, of La Plata
M. William Runyon, 82, of La Plata died July 22, 2004 at Civista Medical Center, La Plata. Mr. Runyon was a retired Assistant Superintendant for Charles County Board of Education. He was also a member of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. Mr. Runyon was a member of the following organizations; VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Rotary Club(held all postions) (Jess Starkey, Dr. Fred Johnson and I formed the Charles County Rotary Club)- first meetings were in the La Plata Howard Johnson's. Frank White owned the hotel and allowed us to have breakfast meetings there. Recipient of Paul Harris Fellow, Chamber of Commerce ( School Board's Rep), Lions Club (held all positions), Boy Scouts of America (Assistant Scout Master), Little League Coach (flag football), Junior Varsity Coach(Baseball), Boxing Coach, Literary Debating Team Coach, Varsity Rifle Instuctor (won two national championships)this was all at Charlotte Hall, Golden Gloves Boxing member, elected Board of Education, Administrative Chair United Methodist Church. Born March 4, 1922 in Logan, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Rush Floyd Runyon and the late Martha Hannah Runyon. He was born 5th in line of 7. He was preceded in death by 4 siblings. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Patricia Runyon; son, Randall W. Runyon, Sr.; brother, Rush Floyd Runyon, Jr.; sister, Thelma Charlotte Hogan; and 4 grandchildren. Visitation will be held Friday, July 30 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata. Service will be Saturday, July 31 at 10 a.m. at La Plata United Methodist Church, 3 Port Tobacco Road, La Plata. The Rev. Davis Peck will officiate. Burial will take place at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf. Memorial contributions may be made to La Plata United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2824, La Plata, MD 20646. Arrangements are being handled by Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata.

Stanley Lee Cross, 83
U. S. Army WWII Veteran
Stanley Lee Cross, 83 of Hughesville, MD died on July 22, 2004 at Calvert Memorial Hospital, Prince Frederick, Maryland.
Born on February 17, 1921 in Aquasco, MD, he was the son of the late Jennings Columbus Cross, Sr. and Emma Mae Canter Cross. He worked for Taylor Electric Company as a Heating and Air Conditioning Installer. Prior he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion in Hughesville. Some of his enjoyments included farming, and gardening. He loved to plant a big garden with lots of tomato plants.
He was husband of the late, Margaret Eleanor Bowles Cross. Survived by daughter, Margaret Anne Fraser and son, Joseph Stanley Cross, both of Hughesville, MD, brothers, Jennings C. Cross, Jr., and B. Ralph Cross, sisters, Faye C. Oliver, M. Lorraine Cross, and M. Virginia Clodfelter. Grandchildren, Robert Duane Kreider, II and Kevin Scott Cross and great-grandchildren, Emily Morgan Cross and Caleb Joseph Noah Cross also survive him.
Family received friends on Sunday, July 25, 2004 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at The Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD. Prayers were recited at 7; 30PM. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, July 26, 2004 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bryantown, MD. Father Joseph Kleinstuber officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Martin Neal “Marty” Langley
Martin Neal “Marty” Langley of Mechanicsville, Maryland formerly of Jacksonville, Florida died July 15, 2004 at his Mechanicsville residence. He was 64 years old.
Born October 5, 1939 in Bradbury Heights, Maryland to the late Harriett Ann Berry and Jack Langley. Raised in Southeast Washington, DC, Marty left Washington to live in Florida where he took up the carpentry trade. After many years in Florida, he returned home, due to illness, and to be close to his family. He never once during his illness complained or ask “Why me”. He enjoyed the time left with friends and family. For all who knew him, he was “a good old Southeast boy” who will truly be missed.
He leaves to mourn his daughter Katherine M. Queen; sister Mary E. Spaller; grandson Steven Queen; son-in-law James Barlas; niece Pinky and her husband Robert Reilly; former wife Doris Carpenter and a host of other relatives and friends.

John Dimeo, 84,
John Dimeo, 84, of California, MD died on Saturday, July 17, 2004 at the St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD.
Born on April 19, 1920 in Aloha, OR, he was the son of the late Frank S. and Theresa S. Sarli Dimeo.
John was enrolled at North Western School of Commerce and was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation at Coulee Dam, WA. He enlisted in the Navy at Spokane, WA in 1942 and received basic training at San Diego, CA. He served aboard the USS PC 573 and earned the European Theatre of Operation and Good Conduct Medals. In 1944 he moved to St. Mary’s County where he was employed at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station as a Budget Analyst for 30 years, retiring in 1974. He was a Charter Member of the Patrol Craft Sailors Association, The American Legion at Avenue, MD, VFW of California, MD, The Moose Lodge of Hollywood, MD, The Elks of California, MD and The National Association of Federal Retired Employees.
He is survived by four brothers, David Dimeo, of Beaverton, OR, Bill Dimeo of Bend OR, Joe Dimeo of Aloha, OR and Frank Dimeo of Hillsboro, OR, three sisters, Regina Tisdale, of Portland, OR, Stella Casey and Angelina Salta both of Aloha, OR. In addirion to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Jones and Rose Morrison, and one brother, George Dimeo.
Friends will be received on Monday, July 19, 2004 from 5; 00 until 8; 00 pm at the Holy Face Catholic Church, Great Mills, MD. Prayers will be recited at 7; 00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at 11; 00 am. The Reverend Robert Reidel will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers for John will be Wanda Norris, Stephanie Vandrosco, Michelle Bean, Linda Vallandingham, Stacey Bean and Joan Bean. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the VFW and Auxiliary.
Arrangements were provided by the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD.

Services; Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 19, 2004 at 10; 00 AM in St. John's Catholic Church with Father Ray Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation; Public viewing will be held in the Mattingley-Gardiner funeral home on Sunday, July 18, 2004 from 2 - 5 PM with prayers being held at 4; 00 PM.

Mary Levia Quade Pilkerton, 78
Mary Levia Quade Pilkerton, 78, of Mechanicsville, MD a life long resident of St. Mary’s County died on July 14, 2004 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born April 30, 1926 in Chaptico, MD she was the daughter of the late Lucy Catherine Russell and Alton Monroe Quade. She is preceded in death by her husband Ignatius Woodrow Pilkerton whom she married on January 3, 1943 in Bushwood, MD. She is survived by her children Ethel Quade Ressler, Harold I. Pilkerton, Doris M. Johnson and James Donald Pilkerton all of Mechanicsville, MD and Susan Tippett of Loveville, MD. She was sister to John Francis “Popeye” Quade of Chaptico, MD, Alton M. “Bing” Quade of Bel Alton, MD, William J. “Wink” Quade and James Bernard Quade of Avenue, MD and Alice Dornes of Bryantown, MD. Mrs. Pilkerton is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also preceded in death by her sister Catherine Graves and brothers Harry M. Quade, Elloitt M. Quade and Joseph A. “Cutter” Quade.
Mrs. Pilkerton attended Sacred Heart School and she worked as a St. Mary’s County school bus driver and contractor for 45 years. She was a member of the St. Mary’s County School Bus Contractors Association and Women of the Moose Association, her hobbies included watching her grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 16, 2004 from 5 – 8 PM at the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A. Prayers will be at 7 PM.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bushwood, MD with Father Alliata officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ricky Tippett, David Pilkerton, Timmy Pilkerton, Jamie Johnson, Joey Johnson and Rusty Quade. Honorary Pallbearers will be Chad Tippett. Contributions maybe made to the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 15, Mechanicsville, MD 20659.

Robert Conner Kopel, 51
Robert Conner Kopel, 51, of Lakewood, Colorado died on July 11, 2004 at his home. He was the son of Wanda Kopel of Coltons Point. He was the son and step-son of Carl and Monika Kopel, respectively, of Coltons Point. He is also survived by his sisters, Jaye Kopel Anderson of Thompson’s Corner and Dita C. Kopel of Glen Burnie; and his brother, James M. Kopel of Columbia. Mr. Kopel was born May 22, 1953, in Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of Chopticon High School Class of 1971. While working with R. E. Lee Electric Company in Newington, VA he obtained his electrician license. He worked for the Keebler Company of Denver for over 25 years and was an Electrical Systems Supervisor. Among his many talents were boat racing and woodworking. He was a drummer in several bands and loved riding motorcycles. Pallbearers will be Robert H. Kopel, Rick Kopel, James Banagan, Dr. Garner Morgan, Vic Anderson, and Weylin Anderson. Contributions may be made to the Seventh District Rescue Squad.
Services have not yet been announced.

George John Fortunato, Sr. 72
George John Fortunato, Sr. 72, of Dameron, MD died on Thursday, July 15, 2004 at the St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Leonardtown, MD.
Born on November 13, 1931 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Virginia Rodano Fortunato.
Mr. Fortunato served his country in the US Army from July 23, 1952 until July 2, 1954, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Germany) and the National Defense Medal. From 1954 until 1975, he spent his summers and weekends in St. Mary’s County. In 1992 he made it his permanent residence. He attended St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in St. Mary’s City. He was a member of the National Italian American Foundation, Steamfitters Local #602 and the Elks Lodge. His hobbies included fishing, gardening, traveling, eating, clock repair and building boat models.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Elliott Fortunato whom he married on October 20, 1962 in Washington, DC, a son George John Fortunato, Jr. of Falls Church, VA, five sisters, Josephine Becker of Punta Gorda, FL, Mary Peglow, of Yorktown, VA, Rose Warlick, of Arlington, VA, Phyllis Hickman, of Waldorf, MD and Carolyn Cogan, of North Port, FL, three brothers, Nicholas Richard Fortunato, of Roanoke, VA, Joseph Fortunato, of Woodstock, VA and Edward Fortunato of Fort Washington, MD. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Fortunato on October 2, 1997.
The Reverend Damian Shadwell will conduct a graveside service on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at 10; 00 am at the Maryland Veterans cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Ridge Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 456, Ridge, MD 20680.

Martha Inez Hugg
Martha Inez Hugg, of Lexington Park, MD, died on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD.
Born on August 10, 1916 in North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Harriet Sawyer Arnold. Mrs. Hugg had worked as a sales clerk.
She is survived by her son, Charles A. Hugg of Lexington Park, MD and a daughter, Patricia Ann Hugg. She is also survived by a sister, Mildred Arnold Gardner, a niece, Dorothy Volia and a nephew, Vincent Payne all of Sligo, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norval Hugg and five brothers, Bert Arnold, Earl Arnold, Everett Arnold, Herman Arnold and Percy Arnold.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 from 2; 00 p.m. until 6; 00 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at 10; 00 a.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend Edward Baker will conduct the service. Interment will follow in Trinity Memorials Gardens in Waldorf, MD.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1032, Lexington Park, MD 20653.

Hellen Eleanor Chaney
Hellen Eleanor Chaney of Mechanicsville, Maryland died at her home on June 23, 2004. She was 72 years old.
Born November 13, 1913 in Washington, DC to the late Estelle and John Gold. Mrs. Chaney did clerical work in the accounting field. She loved playing Bingo, doing word puzzles and drinking Pepsi.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chaney is preceded in death by her husband Frank H. Chaney.
She is survived by her sons Mike, Paul and John Chaney; sister Joan Bassford; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren.
Service and Interment 10AM Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at the Arlington National cemetery Virgina.
