November 23, 1999

Mr. Harry Everett Ernest Jr. died Tuesday, Nov. 23, at his home in Sudlersville, Md. He was 72.

Harry Everett Ernest Jr. was born November 20, 1927 in Washington DC. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Ingraham. He also served in the Marine Air Reserve. After the war he completed his education at Veterans High School. Shortly after he served a four year apprenticeship in the Steamfitters and Pipefitters Union. In 1951, he married Diane Ernest. He was a member of the Eastport United Methodist Church in Annapolis, Md. He also belonged to the Local 602- Steamfitters and Pipefitters Union for 50 years.

Harry Everett Ernest Jr. is survived by his wife Diane Ernest of Sudlersville, Md. Two sons, Scott Ernest of Edgewater, Md and Brad Ernest of Annapolis, Md. One Daughter, Janet Ernest Bowers of Sudlersville, Md. One sister, Doris Gordon of Bowie, Md. Five grandchildren, Melissa Ernest, Ahren Ernest, Mathew Ernest, Brian Ernest and Daniel Bowers. Two great grandchildren, Isabelle Bowers and Andrew Palmonka.

Funeral Services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Millington, Md. Friday, November 26, 1999 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call 1 hour prior.

Interment will be held at the Sudlersville cemetery in Sudlersville, Md. Following services at the funeral home.

In Lieu of flowers friends may send contributions to The Mission of Hospice of Queen Annes Inc.

William Holden Justi, Sr. 99 years of age, of Chestertown, Md, formally of Baltimore, Md. died on November 23, 1999 at Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital as a result of heart failure.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late, Charles Lewis & Katherine [ Williamson ] Justi. He spent all of his formative years in the Baltimore area, receiving not only his high school degree, but receiving his business degree from City College in Baltimore.

He embarked on a career with the B & O Railroad where he worked for a period of 50 years. He retired in 1965 at the position of Chief Clerk. Shortly after his retirement in 1965 he moved to Chestertown, where he has resided for the past 34 years to enjoy the treasures of Maryland’s Eastern shore. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and boating.

Mr. Justi married Mildred I. Penn and together they raised a family of 2

Mr. Justi was a 32-degree mason belonging to Masonic AF & AM Corinthian Lodge # 093 in Cockeysville, Md. He also belonged to the brotherhood of railroad employees.

In his spare time he loved to work with wood and in fact built his own home in Chestertown, and loved to fix all kinds of furniture for family and friends.

His wife Mildred who died in 1984 precedes him in death.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara E. Gary of Catonsville, Mad and his son William Holden Justin, Jr. of Reedville, Virginia, a sister, Mrs. O. Walter Sprier of Baltimore, Md, 4 grandchildren, Tara Gary of Baltimore, Md, and Michael Gary of Street, Md., Susan Vantassell of Mt. Airy Md and Kathryn Harris of Heathsville, Va., 5 great grandchildren, Ann Marie Vantassell and Eric Vantassell both of Mt. Airy, Md., Brooke Gary of Street, Md, Matthew and Brain Harris both of Heathsville, Va.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

The Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Md are handling all local arrangements

Theodore R. Baker died at the Memorial Hospital on November 23, 1999 of complications of cancer and heart. He was 61 years old.

Born in Queenstown MD on July 14, 1938 the son of Lorraine Haberman. He attended Queen Anne’s County Schools. In 1956 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict in Korea. On April 15, 1959 he married Hila Thompson of Grasonville MD. After his discharge from the Army he served as a correctional officer for the State of Maryland Correctional System, and retired in 1977. Mr. Baker will be remember for may jobs including, income tax preparation, the owner and operator of H&R Country Store in Millington, Managing the VFW in Grasonville. He served for 20 years as a hearing judge on the Property Assessment Board in Queen Anne Anne’s County for the State of Maryland.

He was a member of Grasonville VFW Post # 7464, Queenstown American Legion Post and The Bay Country Moose in Queenstown, MD.

He is survived by his wife: Hila Thompson Baker, his mother, Lorraine Haberman of Queenstown MD, Two sons: William R. Baker of Centreville MD, Robert B Baker of Grasonville MD, one daughter : Ruth Ann Kayhoe of Queenstown MD. Two Brothers: Hal Boulden of Stewardstown PA, and Clinton Baker of Easton MD. Four sisters: June Collier, Betty Thompson both of Queenstown, Becky Thompson of Chester MD, Adelaide Harrington of Easton MD. 7 grandchildren also survive Mr. Baker.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville on Thursday November 25, 1999 from 7 to 9 PM. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday November 26, 1999 at 12:30pm. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery near Hurlock MD.

The family request that contributions be directed to the American Heart Association 300 Hope Rd. Centreville MD 21617 or the Cancer Society, P.O. Box #132, Queenstown MD 21658.

Judith "Judy" Ann Ridgell of Stevensville, MD. died Tuesday November 23, 1999 at her home. She was 55.

Born on October 20, 1944 in Baltimore, MD. The daughter of the late Robert R. and Lillian Myers Bendall. She was a graduate of Patterson High School Class of 1963. She began working for Sears in Baltimore, MD. in the Fabrics & Notions department. She married William R. Ridgell, Jr. of Glen Burine, MD. on September 1, 1968. They moved to Eastern Shore in 1980 where Mrs. Ridgell was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. and St. Benedictine in Ridgely, MD.

She is survived by her husband William R. Ridgell, Jr. of Stevensville, MD two sons Douglas J. Ridgell & Stephen P. Ridgell both of Denton, MD. Three sisters Shirley L. Pelter of Anderson, S.C.; Linda C. Carnabucci of Pasadena, MD. and Janice S. Stevenson of Edgewood, MD. a brother The Rev. Dr. Robert Douglas Bendell of Newark, N.J. and one grandchild Michael D. Ridgell.

Funeral Mass will be held 11 AM on Saturday November 27, 1999 at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. Family and friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD on Friday November 26, 1999 from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. November 22, 1999

J. Thomas Middleton died on November 22, 1999 at Penninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD after a long illness. He was 86 years old.

Born in Crosby, MD on January 15, 1913 he was the son of the late James and Rita Howgate Middleton. They moved to Baltimore where he attended school in East Baltimore.

He became a police officer for Baltimore City in 1942 and served for 30 years. He retired as a highly decorated Lieutenant in 1972. Mr. Middleton married T. Mae Mogan on February 16, 1935. She preceded him in death on September 1, 1999.

His involvement in Masonic bodies began in John H.B. Latrobe Lodge #165 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Maryland where he served as Master. He rose to positions of importance including Grand Master of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Maryland and as Worthy Grand Patron of the Eastern Star. He was coroneted Honorary Inspector General 33rd degree Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction and also served as Puissant Sovereign of St. Cyprian Conclave of the Red Cross of Constantine. In addition he was a member of Boumi Temple Shrine of Baltimore, MD.

Mr. Middleton was a past member of Gatch United Methodist Church of Baltimore and a member of Rock Hall United Methodist Church, Rock Hall, MD.

His brother Arthur Leroy Middleton and his sister Eleanor Wilhelm also preceded him in death.

Mr. Middleton is survived by 2 sons and their wives: James Albert and Mickie Middleton of Lynchburg, VA and John Thomas and Melva Middleton of Salisbury, MD and by his sister Ruth Middleton of Baltimore, MD. Eight Grandchildren and ten great Grandchildren also survive him.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, November 26, 1999 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. and on Saturday November 27, 1999 from 10am to 11am at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. at 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, MD. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Wesley Chapel cemetery, Rock Hall, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimers Foundation, Eastern Shore Chapter, PO Box 2233, Salisbury, MD 21802-2233, to the Scottish Rite Children’s Language Disorders Program, 3800 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218, to the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, 72 William Colburn, 6501 Ridge Road, Mount Erie, MD 21771 or to John M. November 20, 1999

Jessie Stewart Connett Richards of Chestertown, Md. died on Saturday November 20, 1999 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville, Md. She was 85.

She was born on August 27, 1914 in Paterson, NJ the daughter of the late Edward Elmer and Jessie Stewart Connett. Mrs. Richards was a 1931 graduate of Paterson Central High School and attended Los Angeles City College. As a young woman she was a member of an all girls orchestra and worked as a buyer for a major department store on both the east and west coasts. In May of 1938 she married Emory Albert Richards. During World War II she worked for Wrights, where she built airplanes. She was a homemaker for the last 50 years, living in Chestertown since 1953. Her husband predeceased her on Feb. 1, 1986.

Mrs. Richards enjoyed music, dancing, sewing, gardening, hiking, and traveling. She was an avid reader. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Chestertown, Md. She is survived by 2 daughters: Nancy Richards Plummer of Bowie, Md., and Laura Richards Cook also of Bowie, Md.; a sister: Alice Connett Henry of Wall, NJ.; 2 grandchildren: Catherine Plummer Blume of Ocean City, Md. and David Carl Plummer of Sykesville, Md. along with a great grandson: Brian Emery Plummer of Sykesville, Md. A brother the late Edward Connett died in 1957.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday November 24, 1999 at 2:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday November 23, 1999 between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 P.M. Interment will be in St. Paul's cemetery Chestertown, Md. Those serving as pallbearers are Landis and David Plummer, Luke Blume, Jack Breslin, Regan Howard, and David Tucker.

November 16, 1999

Dennis Michael Riggin of Rock Hall, Maryland died on Tuesday November 16, 1999 at Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital. He was 54.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Sept. 16, 1945, the son of the late Ellwood V. Riggin and Ruth M. Thomas Riggin of Rock Hall, Md. After graduating from High School Mr. Riggin attended Lincoln Prep College and Delaware State University. In 1967 he married Anna Mae Warner, they moved to Delaware in 1970 where Mr. Riggin worked for Artcraft Electric Supply Company. He worked as manager and left after 20 years. He and his wife moved to Rock Hall, Md. in 1993. Mr. Riggin volunteered much of his time with Rock Hall United Methodist Church and Rock Hall Church of God. He was a promise keeper and a member of the Emmaus Community. His interests included fishing and computers.

In addition to his wife and mother he is survived by 2 sons: Andrew C. Riggin and his wife Suzette of Lewes, De. and Michael V. Riggin of Dover, De.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 20, 1999 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service (10:00 to 11:00 A.M.). Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park in Dover, De. Those serving as pallbearers are Andrew Riggin, Michael Riggin, Kenneth Warner, Bud Hinefelt, David Olsen, and J.R. Trego. November 9, 1999

William Henry Gernert of Grasonville, MD. died of heart failure November 9, 1999 at the University Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He was 55.

Born on January 19,1944 in Grasonville, MD he was the son of the late Christian and Lillian Collins Gernert. He was a graduate of Stevensville High School Class of 1962. He worked in the construction industry prior to working for the Maryland Transportation Authority. He was stationed at various tunnels and bridges, and BWI, but was primarily stationed at the Bay Bridge and obtained a rank of corporal and sergeant. He retired July 28, 1998. After retiring, he began working for American Hardware in Chester, MD.

He married Beverly Ann Fisher on June 11, 1977.

Mr. Gernert was a member of the Bay Country Moose in Queenstown, MD, Tuckahoe Steam & Gas, and MCEA.

Mr. Gernert is survived by his wife, Beverly Ann Gernert, of Grasonville, MD; one son, William Henry Gernert, Jr., of Grasonville, MD; one daughter, Jessica Ann Gernert, of Grasonville, MD; four brothers: George Gernert of Lenoir, NC, Mickey Gernert & Charles Gernert, both of Grasonville, MD and Francis Gernert of Wallingford, CT; two sisters: Lillian Capel of Centreville and Mary Hayman of Queenstown, MD. Predeceasing Mr. Gernert are two daughters, Amy and Marcia Gernert; one brother, Christian Gernert III., and one sister, Sylvia MaGrogan.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 13, 1999 at 11 AM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 3 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Easton, MD. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s Inc., 300 Del Rhodes Ave., Queenstown, MD 21658.

November 6, 1999

Jon Edward "Stoney" Reihl of Rock Hall, MD died suddenly on Saturday, November 6, 1999. He was 46.

Born in Chestertown, MD on February 7, 1953, he was the son of Leonard C. Reihl of Baltimore, MD and Doris R. Swan of Rock Hall, MD. A brother, Larry T. Reihl, preceded him in death.

Jon was an active waterman on the Chesapeake Bay and the waters of North Carolina. He also ran an auto body repair business. He was a member of the Sgt. Preston Ashley Squadron 228 Sons of the American Legion.

In addition to his mother and father he is survived by his former wife Valerie Murray Reihl, and two brothers; William L. Reihl of Rock Hall and David C. Reihl of Fairlee, MD

Graveside Services will he held on Thursday, November 11th at 3:00 p.m. at Wesley Chapel cemetery, Rock Hall, MD.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to be made to the Wesley Chapel cemetery Fund, PO Box 626, Rock Hall, MD 21661.
