William Missler, U.S. Navy Veteran
William “Bill” “The Hat Man” Richard Missler, United States Navy retired, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, May 29, 2006. Bill was born on May 14, 1945, in Toledo, OH where he attended St. Frances De Sales High School and the University of Toledo. His parents, Virginia Grace and Walter William Missler, both of Toledo, OH will miss their son very deeply. He married the love of his life, Judith Virginia Missler, on February 4, 1967. No two people ever loved each other like they did. They were married for 39 wonderful years. Bill was very proud of the 22 years he spent serving his country. Upon his retirement from the Navy, he and his wife remained in St. Mary’s County, MD, where he spent the next 10 years as a water treatment operator for the Metropolitan Commission. Bill fought a long and arduous battle against cancer. But during those trying years, everyone who met him couldn’t help but laugh at the “man with the funny hats”. Bill is preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Ormsby. He is survived by his loving and very dedicated wife, Judith, three children; Christopher (Kylene) of Crestview, FL, Timothy (Colleen) of Okinawa, Japan, Andrew (Jyl) of Round Hill, VA, seven grandchildren; Virginia Missler, Shannon Missler, Whitney Taylor, Brody Missler, Logan Missler, Jarod Missler, and Aidan Missler. He is also survived by three sisters; Carolyn Brenning, Mary Lou Czerniak both of Toledo, OH and Kathy Weaver of Temperance, MI, many nieces and nephews and wonderful friends that he considered family. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 4, 2006 from 2; 00 – 5; 00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where Prayers will be said at 3; 00 PM followed by Knights of Columbus Prayers at 3; 15 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 5, 2006 at 10; 00 AM in St. John’s Catholic Church with Fr. Raymond Schmidt officiating. Inurnment will take place in Arlington National cemetery at a later date. Contributions may be made to Cancer Support Group of St. Mary’s Hospital, P.O. Box 527, Leonardtown, MD 20650, St. John’s Building Fund, P.O. George Paul Curtis, Sr. 87, of Leonardtown, MD, formerly of Lexington Park, MD died April 14, 2006 in St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Leonardtown, MD. Born June 9, 1918 in Medley’s Neck, MD he was the son of the late Marty and Nettie Curtis. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Elizabeth Curtis whom he married in Medley’s Neck, MD. He is survived by his children; Mary Fluellen of Leonardtown, MD, James Young and Catherine Fenwick both of Lexington Park, MD, Margie Buie of Sanford, NC, Agnes Brooks and Ann Moore both of San Diego, CA, George Curtis, Jr. and Linda Green both of Phoenix, AZ, Joseph Curtis of Forestville, MD, and Thomas Curtis of Lusby, MD, and his sister Catherine Young of Lexington Park, MD. He was also proceeded in death by his brothers and sisters; John Henry Curtis, Roger Curtis, James Curtis, Martin Curtis, Mitchell Curtis, Anna Mae Butler and Lillian Young; 33 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. Mr. Curtis was a life long St. Mary’s County resident and was a farmer/sharecropper until his retirement in 1992, and he also served in the U.S. Army for 4 years. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing and singing.Funeral Service were held April 21st with Rev. Rudy Brooks officiating. Interment followed in Charles Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were William Young, James Wendell Curtis, Antwan Curtis, James “Buddy” Curtis, Maurice Stewart and Lamont Curtis. Honorary Pallbearers will be Javonte Bonds, David Bonds and Gary Biscoe.

Mary Erva “Hubbard” Hancock, 78 of Hollywood, MD died April 18, 2006 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born October 20, 1927 in Leonardtown, MD she was the daughter of the late James Earl and Alice Maude Van Wart Curry. She was preceded in death by her husband Norman Hurbert Hancock, Sr., whom she married in St. John’s Church on November 4, 1945. She is survived by her children and their spouses; Tweet & Winks Pilkerton of California, MD, Alice & David Gray, and Calvin & Annette Hancock both of Mechanicsville, MD, Alvin & Sandy Hancock of Leonardtown, MD, Patty & Jimmy Wood of Avenue, MD, Joe & Pam Hancock and Lenny & Glenda Hancock both of Hollywood, MD and Shelia & Darren Smith of Lexington Park, MD, sister; Hope Daniels of Pearl, MS; 21 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her long time companion Larry Beyer. She was preceded in death by her children; Norman Hancock, Jr. and Darlene Snellings and her sisters; Ruth Alvey and Dorthy Newton. Mrs. Hancock was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where she graduated from St. John’s School. She was a loving mother who enjoyed spending time with her family and loved ones. Prayers were said on Friday, April 21, 2006, at 7; 00 PM, with Rev. Eamon Dignan officiating, where the family will receive friends from 5; 00 – 8; 00 PM. A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, April 22, 2006 with Rev. Philip Ayers officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion cemetery, Laurel Grove, MD. Pallbearers will be James Alvey, Billy Alderman, Tom Chedester, Norman Buckler, Winks Pilkerton and Mike Guy. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren. Rosa Lavern Nolan
Rosa Lavern, the eldest child to the late Billie and Fern Saunders, was born on December 1, 1949, in Washington, D.C. She departed this life peacefully on Friday, March 24th, 2006 at the St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, Maryland; after a long battle with ALS a.k.a. as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Rosa attended school in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Eastern High School in 1967. She also received a B.S. degree from the “old” District of Columbia Teacher’s College now known as the University of the District of Columbia.
She was employed by the Department of Parks and Recreation in Washington, D.C. but was interested in traveling, which lead her to move to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. She taught Physical Education and Modern Dance to the students at the Charlotte Amalie High School for several years.
Rosa returned home and was joined in holy matrimony to her sweetheart, Joseph Alexander Nolan, on November 20, 1980 where they started their life together in Mechanicsville, Maryland. To this union was born three sons, Jamar, Lamar and Javar.
Rosa also known as Rose in Southern Maryland (Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties) was employed by several agencies which included; the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Office on Aging, and the Public School Systems.
Rosa was baptized at an early age and had a loving and personal relationship with God. She loved and devoted her life to family. She was a wonderful wife and mother, as well as, a loving sister and daughter. She was proactive and whatever her independent instinct or desires were she would go after it. She was always involved in different cultural activities. Rosa was full of the spirit of living and was highly motivated.
Her hobbies were traveling, teaching modern dance, dancing, and listening to different types of music (Reggae, Blues, Jazz and Rock and Roll). One of her favorite tunes was Blueberry Hill, by Fats Domino.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Rhana Kalia Saunders and her brother Kevin Quinton Saunders.
She leaves to cherish her memory; husband, Joseph Alexander Nolan of Mechanicsville, MD; three sons, Jamar Joseph Nolan, Lamar Kevin Nolan, and Javar Charles Nolan of Mechanicsville, MD; two sisters, Marquita Saunders Smith of Frederick, MD, and Tawanda Fern Saunders Fenwick of Lexington Park, MD; three brothers, Andre Saunders of Washington, D.C., Audwin Lee Saunders of Capital Heights, MD, and Wayne Keith Saunders of Temple Hills, MD; four sisters-in-laws, Mary Ann Stewart, Joyce Nolan, Helen Nolan and Tasha Saunders; three brothers-in-laws, Roger Smith, Gene Fenwick and James Nolan, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

John Francis Plunkert
Plunkert, John Francis — Retired civilian Naval aircraft electronics engineer. On 3-22-06, John Francis Plunkert, 85, beloved husband of Barbara Melville Plunkert for 61 years, died in Arlington, Va. He was born in Washington, DC at Old Columbia Hospital on January 24, 1921. He is survived by four daughters and their families; Patricia Bontempo of Diamondhead, MS, Lois Plunkert of Hollywood, MD, Joan Schleicher of Spring, TX, and Barbara Jones of Little Rock, AR; grandchildren, Lise Mize of Pacific Junction, IA, Darren Bontempo of Harvy, LA, Barry John Schleicher of California, MD, Steven Schleicher of Sugar Land, TX, Judson Jones, Jr., Braden Jones, and Melissa Jones of Little Rock, AR.; great-grandchildren Reagan Mize and Kaleb Sanders.
John was a graduate of three Washington schools; Immaculate Conception Boys Academy, Gonzaga High School and Catholic University School of Electrical Engineering. He was one of a handful of engineers who established the Naval Air Test Center-Patuxent River, Maryland in 1943. He remained there until 1956 and became Head of the Aircrafts Electronic Systems Department. He was transferred to the Naval Aircraft Electronic Division of the Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington, DC in 1956 and was supervisory electronic engineer of the Systems Integration Branch where he supervised electronics systems design for all Naval aircraft. During his fifteen years at BUAER (later called Naval Air Systems Command) he served on numerous NATO committees as engineering representative for the U.S. government. He also served as aviation electronic advisor to the Japanese Navy in construction of anti-submarine warfare aircraft. He retired from the Naval Air Systems Command in 1973 with 32 year of continuous service.
After retiring, he became president of the family owned petroleum business in central Washington, which was closed in 1975 to make space for a federal housing project. John continued to preside over the investment division of Plunkert Incorporated as president until his death.
John was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington, VA, for 39 years. While at his summer residence on the Patuxent River at Hollywood MD, he was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church for 33 years. His hobbies were boating, fishing, crabbing and swimming. Favorite beverage; very old Bourbon.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, March 27, 2006 at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church, 43927 St. John’s Road, Hollywood, MD 20636. Reverend Ray Schmidt was the celebrant. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Johns Building Fund, P.O. Box 69, Hollywood, MD 20636

Ivy Louise Sayres Hurry

Ivy Louise Sayres Hurry a long-time resident of Clements Maryland passed away on Monday, March 20, 2006 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD. Mrs. Hurry was born May 3, 1922 in Grafton, West Virginia, the youngest daughter of Silas E. Sayres and Ruhama Ivy Mahaffey Sayres. Mrs. Hurry attended Fairmont State College during WWII completing her undergraduate degree in teaching in three years. Following graduation, she taught one year in Daybrook, West Virginia, near the Pennsylvania border.
In 1944 she moved to Washington D.C. where she was employed as a dietician at Suburban Hospital. In 1945 she took a new job teaching Home Economics at Margaret Brent High School in Helen, Maryland. In September 1946 she married John William Hurry. Together they operated Hurry and Anderson General Merchandise in Clements Maryland until 1949 when they moved to a farm outside of Clements. Her sister, Sarah Sayres also moved to St. Mary’s County where she married Thomas Guy.
Mrs. Hurry subsequently taught in some of the last two room school houses in St. Mary’s County teaching grades 5 through 8 in one classroom. Mrs. Hurry taught first at River Springs School in the 7th District and then the Clements School. After the closing of the small schools, Mrs. Hurry taught at Great Mills Elementary School.
Mrs. Hurry was active in the Farm Enumeration program sponsored by the Maryland Agricultural Extension Office from the University of Maryland. In the 1971 she was appointed to the Charter Writing Board charged with developing a charter government for St. Mary’s County. At that time, St. Mary’s County was governed by a board of only three county commissioners. The proposal was defeated in the election of 1972. Mrs. Hurry subsequently became involved with the Office on Aging for St. Mary’s County where she served as a Senior Services aid operating the Oakley Senior Center. After retirement, Mrs. Hurry remained active in senior affairs.
Mrs. Hurry was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of St. Mary’s County and a long time member of Our Lady of the Wayside Church in Chaptico. She had an abiding interest in Maryland history and was a long time volunteer at Historic St. Mary’s City. Her husband predeceased her in 1971. She is survived by six children, Ivy Louise Hurry, Sue Ann Blackwell, John William (“J”) Hurry Jr., Silas D. Hurry, Robert J. Hurry, and Charles R. Hurry. She had six grandchildren, Jessica Blackwell, Alys Blackwell, Kathleen Smith, Charles Hurry Jr., Ashton Hurry and Bryce Hurry and one great-grandson Eli Smith.
Family will receive friends at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, Maryland on Thursday, March 23rd from 3 to 7 p.m. with prayers offered at 6; 00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, March 24th at 10; 00 a.m.at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Morganza, MD with the Reverend Keith Woods, pastor of the church, will be the celebrant.Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Kevin Troy “KT” Williams, 23, of Great Mills, MD, died on March 18, 2006 in the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Baltimore, MD.
Born August 30, 1981 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of Brenda E. Williams and Sylvester Robert Phillips, Sr. He attended St. Mary’s County schools. At the time of his death, he was enrolled at the Art Instruction School. In November of 2005 he received the Blue Ribbon Art Award for Outstanding Achievement. He loved sports, drawing and his family. All the kids in the family adored him.
During his early years, Kevin attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Lexington Park, MD. He recently attended Greater Mount Zion Church of Prince Frederick, MD.
He leaves to cherish fond memories, his mother, Brenda Williams of Great Mills, MD, his father, Sylvester Phillips and stepmother, Theo Phillips, maternal grandmother, Agnes C. Kevin’s last wish was to be an organ donor, his family honored that request.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 25, 2006 from 9; 00 a.m. to 11; 00 a.m. in the First Missionary Baptist Church, Lexington Park, MD. The funeral service will be conducted at 11; 00 a.m. with the Reverend Roderick McClanahan officiating. Interment will follow in the First Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, Lexington Park, MD.

Bertha Mary Stump of Mechanicsville, Maryland died March 12, 2006 in Pinellas Park, Florida. She was 85 years old.
Mrs. Stump was born May 12, 1920 in Cumberland, MD and daughter of the late Marie and Nick Carter. She was a homemaker who enjoyed doing crafts and going to dinner theaters. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl C. Stump Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Terry Faulkner and Dawn Stump; son, Carl C. Stump III; daughter-in-law Julie Stump; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren.

Eunice Teresa Gunn Butler
Eunice Teresa Gunn Butler, 48, of Baltimore, MD died on March 10, 2006 in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD.
Born on October 1, 1957 in Leonardtown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Chesley and Cora Elizabeth Dorsey Chesley. Mrs. Butler worked in the food service business.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Lionel Gunn. She is survived by four sisters, A. Christine Scriber of Lexington Park, MD, Elnora Jackson and her husband Anthony of Germany, Thelma Jones and her husband Willie of Clinton, MD, Betty Germany of Hyattsville, MD and four brothers, Joseph Watts of Washington, DC, Bernard Gunn of Lexington Park, MD, William Gunn and his wife Patti of Indian Trail, NC and Thomas Gunn and his wife Kim of Lexington Park, MD.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 17, 2006 from 9; 00 a.m. until 10; 00 a.m. in St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, Ridge, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10; 00 a.m. The Reverend Damian Shadwell will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be James Allen, Melvin Butler, Vaughn Chase, Sherman Jones, Steven Jones and Gibbons Dyson. Honorary pallbearers will be Willie Jones and Edgar Scriber.

David Russell McKay, 84, of Hollywood, Maryland died on March 13, 2006 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, Maryland. Born in Calais, Maine on June 7, 1921, he was the son of the late William and Edna Sprague McKay.
He served in the United States Navy for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife Cecilia McKay of Hollywood, Maryland, daughter Cindy McKay Young of St. Inigoes, Maryland, son David William McKay of Jacksonville, Florida, two sisters, Grace Meader of Calais, Maine, Margorie Hagen of Massachusetts, and two grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Nash and Alden McKay.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 from 5; 00 p.m. to 8; 00 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, Maryland 20650. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 10; 00 a.m. in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 21708 Mt. Zion Church Road, Mechanicsville, Maryland 20659. Reverend Phil Ayers will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
