Mae Lorraine Cross
Mae Lorraine Cross of Gaithersburg, MD died on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in La Plata, MD. She was 79 years old.
Born April 28, 1926 in Aquasco, MD to the late Emma Mae Canter Cross and Jennings Columbus Cross Sr. She was a retired Accountant and Bookkeeper for the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal Industries for 38 years. She liked to travel and enjoyed eating hard crabs. Miss Cross was known as the family caregiver, especially to her parents. She was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Baden, MD.
In addition to her parents, Miss Cross was preceded in death by her sister Dorothy M. Canter; brothers Stanley L. Cross and Raymond R. Cross; devoted friend Albert J. Delfield.
She is survived by her sisters Faye C. Oliver and Virginia C. Clodfelter; brothers Jennings C. Cross Jr. and B. Ralph Cross; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mary Cecelia Holly
Mary Cecelia Holly, 66, of Great Mills, MD, died January 22, 2006 in Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC.
Born on September 20, 1939 in Morganza, MD, she was the daughter of the late George Coates, Sr. and Kathleen Stewart Coates. Mrs. Holly worked as a Nursing Assistant.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Ignatius Holly of Great Mills, MD, two daughters, Ann Elizabeth Swales, Margaret Gertrude Evans, two sons, Francis Otha Stewart III, James Alexander Evans, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, three sisters, Mary Rose Young, Jane Catherine Taylor, Frances Herbert, and a brother, James Victor Young. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Ellen Jo Evans, a son, Michael Darnell Evans and a brother, James Louis Stewart.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 27, 2006 from 5; 00 p.m. until 8; 00 p.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Lexington Park, MD. Prayers will be recited at 7; 00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at 10; 00 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. The Reverend Mike Dolan will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Jean Marie Payne
Jean Marie “Jeanne” Payne, lost her nearly two year battle with breast cancer on Saturday, January 21st, 2006 and passed away surrounded by family and friends at her home in Hollywood.
Jeanne was born on August 4, 1964 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown. She was a wonderful woman with a loving heart and a strong will. Her bond to her family was strong and carried on as she began her own family with George Raley Payne, Jr. of Compton whom she married on March 7, 1987.
Jeanne and George were blessed with two children Lauren Jean Payne and Darren Ryan Payne, both bringing joy and love into her life and giving her strength. Her family was the center of her life. Lauren and Darren’s accomplishments gave her a sense of pride that could be seen often as she spoke of her children.
Jeanne spent her free time scrap booking, camping with her family and anything else challenging that came along. Memories of laughter around the campfire will always be carried on by her friends and family.
Her ability to facilitate any task allowed her to quickly move up through the ranks at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Her final role was as the Director of Civilian Management for the Navy under the Chief of Naval Personnel at the Navy Annex in Washington, D.C. In recent months she received a Special Act Award for performing her duties above and beyond during her treatments for cancer. Jeanne never lost the drive and determination that made her an excellent mother, wife, sister, daughter, friend and co-worker.
In addition to her husband and children, she is also survived by her parents, William L. “Lenny” and Elizabeth J. “Betty Jean” Guy of Hollywood, her brothers, William L. “Lenny” Guy III and his wife Salina of Hagerstown, James R. “Ricky” Guy and his wife Denise of Mechanicsville, Robert L. “Bobby” Guy of California and Timothy M. “Timmy” Guy of Ellicott City; her sister, Cynthia L. “Cindy” Kolwey and her husband Jimmy of Hollywood; father in-law and mother in-law, George R. Payne, Sr. and E. Virginia Payne of Mathias, WV, and many close, special friends. She was proceded in death by her grandparents, Leonard and Margaret Guy and Richley and Catherine Norris.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Jan. 25th at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hollywood with the Rev. Raymond Schmidt officiating. Pallbearers were William L. Guy, III, James R. Guy, Robert L. Guy, Timothy M. Guy, William L. Mary Bernadette Green
Mary Bernadette Green, 97 went to meet her father on January 19, 2006 at her home in Clements, MD. Born June 1, 1908 in Clements, MD she was the daughter of the late Phillip and Caroline Young Butler. She was preceded in death by her husband George Green. She is survived by her son; Joseph Aloysius Green and his wife Patricia Ann “Essie” of Clements, MD; grandchildren whom she raised; Sherry Johnson, Darrell Green, Tanya Green and Joshua Mason; the Guy family; Millie Huseman, Joanie Hartzfeld, Betty Ritter, Al, Bill and JS Guy; grandchildren; Regina Mason, Michelle Mason, Michael Mason, Cornellus Green, DeQuinte Green and Corrindi Hebb; a precious god daughter; Madelene Davis of Clements, MD; 22 great – grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her sisters; Della Branson, Pearl Jackson, Naomi Adam, Rosie Brent and Madeline Hill. Mrs. Green was a life long St. Mary’s County resident who attended Number One School. She worked as a senior companion for St. Mary’s County for 75 years until her retirement in 1990. Mary took care of a numerous amount of families in the St. Mary’s County District. She loved dancing, smiling, enjoying the company of family and friends, but most of all cooking big meals and making sure everyone had enough; especially on Sunday’s she prepared big meals enough for a host of family and friends and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On Jan. 24th at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Morganza, a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated with Father Keith Woods officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Joseph Alexander Winters, Sr.
Joseph Alexander “Papa Joe” Winters, Sr., 94, of Lexington Park, MD died January 21, 2006 in Bayside Care Center. Born April 21, 1911 in Chaptico, MD he was the son of the late Alexander and Maude Holt Winters. He was the loving husband Blanche Dorsey Winters whom he married in La Plata, MD. She was the loving mother of Yvonne Robinson of Temple Hills, MD, Gladys Estep of Lexington Park, MD, Wilma Estep, James Winters, Sr., William Winters, Sr. and Joseph Douglas all of Mechanicsville, MD and Paul Winters of La Plata, MD. He is survived by 38 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Spears Winters; daughters Agnes Jordan, Loretta Medley, and Barbara Winters; son Joseph Alexander Winters, Jr.; brothers Richard Winters and Dick Winters and sister Mary Winters. Mr. Winters was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where he received his education. He was employed as a farmer and horticulturist for Cremona Farm for 63 years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 27, 2006 at 10; 00 AM in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Keith Woods officiating. Interment will follow in Queen of Peace cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dale Jordan, Joseph Medley, Jr., Kevin Winters, James Winters, Jr., Julius Estep, and Wayne Estep. Honorary Pallbearers will be Russell Coates, Jerry Estep, Charles Estep, Jr. Jerry Harris, Marcus Estep, Alvin Jordan and William Winters, Jr.

Bobby Gene Woods
Bobby Gene “Bob” Woods, 67, of Leonardtown, MD died January 23, 2006 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born January 13, 1939 in Welch, WV he was the son of the late Virgil and Lara Bowers Woods. He was the loving husband of Donna J. Woods whom he married in Leonardtown, MD on November 25, 1998. They were together for 34 years. He is survived by his children; Tammy Lynn Woods of Lexington Park, MD and Michael Dale Woods of Franklin, VA; 2 grandchildren, Kacie Lynn Quade, age 7 and Ashton Michael Quade, age 2. He was preceded in death by his brother Wayne Woods. He was the self employed as the owner of B & D Excavating. He enjoyed boating, fishing and running heavy equipment. A funeral service and burial was conducted in Leonardtown on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006. Pallbearers were Johnny Lathroum, Bernie Woodburn, David Lathroum, Glen Lathroum, and Teenie Boy Lathroum. Edwin Harland McCall
Edwin Harland McCall, 91, of Lexington Park, MD, died on January 22, 2006 in St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Leonardtown, MD.
Edwin was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada June 30, 1914 and was brought to Boston, MA about 4 years later. He was married to Elisabeth A. McCall, who preceded him to the Lord on April 7, 2000. Edwin was a member of the United Church of Christ in Tavares, FL where he and Elisabeth were active members. Since coming to Maryland in 2002, Edwin attended the Lexington Park United Methodist Church. He had recently lived in Mount Dora, FL; Jaffrey, NH and Waltham, MA. He was a veteran of the Massachusetts National Guard’s 110th Cavalry Regiment and received an honorable discharge in 1938. Edwin was a tool and die machinist most of his carer and retired as a customer service representative for Bookstone Co.
He is survived by his children; Vaughn McCall of Lexington Park, MD; Bruce McCall of Peterborough, NH; Terry Cook of Waltham, MA; Lorna Rabbit of Newton, MA and a stepson, Joseph Diab, 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 28, 2006 from 1; 00 p.m. until 2; 00 p.m. in the Lexington Park United Methodist Church, Lexington Park, MD. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2; 00 p.m. The Reverend Ken Walker will conduct the service. Interment will be private.

Elisabeth Witherspoon Riegel
Elisabeth Witherspoon Riegel, 93, of Leonardtown, MD, died on January 23, 2006 at her residence.
Born on June 26, 1912 in Fostoria, OH, she was the daughter of the late Walter Manning Witherspoon and Verna Friesner Witherspoon. Known to her many friends as “Betty”, a name she was not too fond of. She attended Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio where she majored in violin and piano. In 1932, she met and married Morton Edward Riegel who died in September 2005. They had been married 73 years. During World War II she taught music at Great Mills High School. Following the war she studied pipe organ at Bluffton College in northern Ohio, then served as her church organist. She also served her college orchestra as concert master at many performances in northern Ohio. Elisabeth was a homemaker and volunteer through the rest of her life. She served as a Red Gray Lady and participated in blood bank activities for many years in St. Mary’s County. She loved to play Bridge and was a member of the same Bridge club for over 40 years. She was a charter member of the country Garden club. She was always the neighborhood “Doctor Mom” who treated local children’s scrapes and bruises when their squeamish mothers wouldn’t. She obtained a hypodermic syringe from a local nurse and administered rabies vaccinations to neighborhood pets. Elisabeth is survived by son, Robert Witherspoon Riegel and his wife Patricia Flynn Riegel of Littleton, CO, five grandchildren – Kathleen Hayes, Lafayette, CA, Alison Robinson, Fairfax, VA, Margaret Petermann, Oakland, CA, Major Jennifer Johnson, Tucson, AZ, Major Robert Riegel, Colorado Springs, CO and 15 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 from 9; 30 a.m. until 11; 30 a.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD. A Memorial Service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 10; 30 a.m. Interment will be private.

James Benjamin Brown, Jr
James Benjamin Brown, Jr., 50, of Lexington Park, MD, died on January 17, 2006 in Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.
Born on January 15, 1956 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of Annie Mae Brown of Lexington Park, MD and the late James Benjamin Brown, Sr. Mr. Brown worked as a car detailer.
He is survived by his mother, Annie Mae Brown of Lexington Park, MD, a son, Brandon Kenneth Brown of Lexington Park, MD, a daughter, Angel Brown of Baltimore, MD, two sisters, Francine Mae Morgan of Lexington Park, MD, Pandora Ann Brown of Baltimore, MD and a brother, James Rolland Barnes of Lexington Park, MD.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 from 12 Noon until 1; 00 p.m. in the Park Hall True Holiness Church, Park Hall, MD. A Funeral Service conducted at 1; 00 p.m. with Pastor Phillip A. Spence, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Don William Robertson
Don William Robertson, 65, of Lusby, MD died January 17, 2006 in Calvert Memorial Hospital. Born September 25, 1940 in Lonaconing, MD he was the son of the late Thomas William and Ora Katherine Mowbray Robertson. He was the loving husband of Barbara Jean Robertson whom he married in Hyattsville, MD on August 26, 1961. He is survived by his son Eric Robertson and his wife Janet of Lusby, MD, grandchildren; Jennifer Robertson and John Robertson both of Mechanicsville, MD, Christina Reese, Tim Reese and Rachel Reese all of Lusby, MD; brothers and sisters; George Robertson of Lonaconing, MD, Joan Ropko of College Park, MD and Kenneth Robertson of Lusby, MD. Mr. Robertson moved to St. Mary’s County in 1994 from Prince George’s County, MD. He was a graduate of Valley High School, Class of 1958. He was employed as a plumber for C.M. Lipp & Son for 23 years until his retirement in 1982. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 22, 2006 from 2; 00 – 5; 00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, with Prayers being said at 3; 00 PM. Frank Carl Bonnevier
U. S. Army WWII Veteran
Frank Carl Bonnevier, 78, of Leonardtown, MD formerly of York, PA died January 16, 2006 in Leonardtown, MD. Born August 8, 1927 in Buffalo, NY he was the son of Frank Folke and Alma Linnea Carlson Bonnevier. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Sarah Rutherford Bonnevier on February 23, 1999 in York, PA whom he married on May 3, 1952 in Buffalo, NY. He is survived by his sons; Frank Bonnevier of Windsor, PA, Bruce Bonnevier and his wife Peggy of Boston, MA and Kirk Bonnevier and his wife Terry of Leonardtown, MD; sisters; Viola Tongring of Festus, MO and Marion Downes of Asheville, NC and 5 grandchildren. Mr. Bonnevier graduated from Kenmore High School in Buffalo, NY Class of 1945, University of Buffalo in Buffalo, NY Class of 1951 with a Bachelor of Science of Industrial Engineering Degree, University of Buffalo in Buffalo, NY Class of 1956 with a Bachelor of Science of Mechanical Engineering Degree, Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH Class of 1965 with a Master’s of Business Administration Degree and also Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA Class of 1974 with a Data Processing Technology Certificate. He moved to St. Mary’s County in September 2003 from York, PA. He worked as a manager of manufacturing engineering for Voith Hydro Inc., in York, PA for 16 years until his retirement in May 1990. He served in the U.S. Army for 2 years from 1945 – 1947 where he served in Europe following WWII. Frank was a licensed professional engineer. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and former president of the Lincoln Chapter in Pennsylvania. He was a member and past president of the York and Niagara Frontier Chapters of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He enjoyed reading, playing the piano, surf fishing and golf. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 11; 00 AM in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 22550 Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Barbara Ann Fenwick
Barbara Ann Fenwick of St. Mary’s County, MD died on January 8, 2006 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD. She was 63 years old.
Born July 23, 1942 in Savannah, Georgia to Mabel and Smith Johnson and Harold Johnson Sr. Mrs. Fenwick held an Associate’s Degree and her twin engine plane pilot’s license but her real love was raising her family and traveling with her husband while he served in the U. S. Navy. She also enjoyed bowling and played on various bowling leagues. She was of the Catholic faith.
She is the beloved wife for 41 years to Francis C. Fenwick Jr.; the loving mother of Robi Jerome Fenwick, Ann Janez Williams and her husband Eric Williams; sister of Kimberly Johnson, William Johnson, Kenneth Johnson and Harold Johnson Jr.; also survived by eight grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.

Mary Josephine McLeod
Mary Josephine McLeod, 86, of California, MD formerly of Brooklyn, NY died January 8, 2006 in Leonardtown, MD. Born March 20, 1919 in Staten Island, NY she was the daughter of the late Archibald and Catherine Higgins. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward F. McLeod in August of 1976 in Brooklyn, NY, whom she married in 1951 in CT. She is survived by her children; Donald & his wife Paula of Leonardtown, MD, William & his wife Eileen of Freehold, NJ; step son; Edward J. McLeod of Colts Neck, NJ; siblings; Sr. Josephine Higgins RSM of Albany, NY; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her step daughter; Ann Marie Cakouros; siblings; Evelyn Khlor and A. William Higgins. Ms. McLeod moved to St. Mary’s County from Brooklyn, NY in October of 1994. She was one of the first residents of the Wildewood Retirement Village. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 from 5; 00 – 8; 00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, with Prayers being said at 7; 00 PM. William Edward Winters, Sr.
U. S. Navy WWII Veteran
William Edward “Bill” Winters, Sr., 87, of Leonardtown, MD died January 10, 2006 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born November 28, 1918 in Washington, DC he was the son of the late Ernest and Agnes Virginia Brown Winters. He was the loving husband of Margaret Winters whom he married in Leonardtown, MD on October 12, 2002. He is survived by his children; Joyce Winters Keller of FL, William Winters, Jr. and James Winters, Sr. both of MD; sister; Doris Ivey of NH; 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy M. Knott on May 28, 1992 in Leonardtown, MD and siblings; Virginia Smoot, Robert Winters, Anna Raba and Elizabeth Jones. Mr. Winters attended Eastern High School. He moved to St. Mary’s County in 1948 from Washington, DC. He was the Founder & President of Winters Sheet Metal, Inc. for 56 years. He also served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years on board the USS Aucilla. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Vibes Singing Group. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 13, 2006 from 4; 00 – 8; 00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, with Prayers being said at 7; 00 PM. Bruce Scalone Fleming
U.S. Navy Viet Nam Veteran, Test Pilot School Graduate
Bruce Scalone Fleming, LCDR US Navy (ret.), 73, of California, Md., died on December 30, 2005 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown.
Born on April 22, 1932 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late William and Rose Scalone Fleming. Mr. Fleming served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1957 until 1977. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Small Arms Award, Expert Rifleman Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation. His military service training included Helicopter Pilot Training, Pensacola, FL in 1958 and U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, MD in 1961.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara L. Fleming of California, MD, two daughters, Kathleen Y. Fleming of Alexandria, VA, Kim Talbert of Lubbock, TX, three sons, Kevin Fleming of Lynchburg, VA, Keith Fleming of Oakton, VA, Kenneth Fleming of Bowie, MD and six grandchildren.
A Graveside Service will be conducted on March 9, 2006 at 3; 00 p.m. in Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, VA with full military honors.
