Norwood Spencer Sothoron
Norwood Spencer Sothoron, 93, of Lexington Park, MD, died on Friday, February 4, 2005 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, Charlotte Hall, MD.
Born on September 9, 1911 in Charlotte Hall, MD, he was the son of the late Richard Horatio Sothoron and the late Lillian Harrison Sothoron.
Mr. Sothoron graduated from the University of MD in 1934 as senior class president and lettered in the sports of football, lacrosse, basketball, and baseball. He was the a two time All American in lacrosse and football and won the Sylvester Medal for Excellence in athletics and the H.C. Byrd Citizenship Prize. Mr. Sothoron was inducted into the University of MD Athletes Hall of Fame, the State Athletic Hall of Fame, and the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Mr. Sothoron was a United States Army World War II veteran serving in the 110th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group in the South Pacific Campaign. He excelled to the rank of Colonel. He also was the Commandant of the Charlotte Hall Military Academy from 1947-1969.
Mr. Sothoron was a member of the Lions Club for over 40 years and was past president. He also served as a Deputy District Governor of the Lion Club. He was on the board of Directors for SMECO from 1974-1993, frequently volunteered for the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, and was a member of the M Club and Terrapin Club.
He is survived by his wife Jane Spaulding Bennett Sothoron of Lexington Park, MD and his four children Cokie Sothoron of Lexington Park, MD; Peggy Wormwood of Davidsonville, MD; John Sothoron of Lexington Park, MD; and Kenny Sothoron of Mechanicsville, MD. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Rd., Leonardtown, MD on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 from 6; 00-8; 00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at Church of the Ascension, 21641 Great Mills Rd., Lexington Park, MD 20653 at 1; 30 p.m. Interment will be private.

Richard Elmer Bowles
Richard Elmer Bowles, 73, of Hollywood, MD died on Tuesday, February 8, 2005.Born on March 18, 1931 in Cheltenham, Maryland, he was the son of the late Philip and Elizabeth Burch Bowles.
Mr. Bowles was a waterman all his life and enjoyed working on the water. He also enjoyed building boats and driving his John Deere tractor.
He is survived by his lifelong companion and friend of 41 years, Lizzie Tolson, his daughter Tammy Williams of Hollywood, MD, his sons, Kenny Tolson of La Plata, MD, Paul Tolson of Callaway, MD, Jerry Burch of Longview Beach, MD and Johnny Wathen, his sisters, Agnes Louise Griffin, Cecelia Eveline Pennesi, and Hattie Alberta Morgan, and brothers, George Adrine Bowles and Kenneth Earl Bowles, his grandchildren, Craig Tolson, Thomas Tolson, Cory Tolson, Kyle Tolson, Hannah Tolson, Evan Williams, Gloria Burch and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his sisters Elizabeth Beatrice Bowles, Cora Virginia Bowles, Jane Ellsworth Bowles, Catherine Mildred Bowles, his brothers, Philip Dennis Bowles, Joseph Herman Bowles, John Lloyd Bowles, William Leonard Bowles, Franklin Louis Bowles, and one grandchild, Mariam Williams.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at 10; 00 a.m. at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, Maryland.
Pallbearers will be Craig Tolson, Thomas Tolson, James Williams, Dennis Morgan, Jessie Morgan and Leonard Pirner. Honorary pallbearers are David Morgan and Tommy Morgan.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary’s Inc. P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650 or St. Mary’s County Emergency Friendly Fund.

Percy Jerome Holton, Sr
Percy Jerome Holton, Sr., 59, of Loveville, MD, died on February 14, 2005 in the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.
Born on May 1, 1945 in Charlotte Hall, MD, he was the son of the late Edward Jerome Holton and Elsie Irene Woodland Holton.
Percy was a life long resident of St. Mary’s County. He was educated in the public schools in St. Mary’s County, MD. He later joined the U.S. Navy. During that time, he accomplished his dream of traveling to several places around the world. He served in the Viet Nam War and was a proud United States Veteran receiving the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and the National Defense Service Medal. Percy was employed at the Southern Maryland Electric Company for over 25 years. After retirement, he worked as a reputable security guard serving various places throughout Southern Maryland and Virginia. Percy was a well liked man who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His favorite hobbies were fishing, computers, thrift shopping and joking with his nieces and nephews. In 1978 Percy married Mary Ellen Braxton. They had many happy years together.
Percy is survived by the mother of his five children, Mary E. Holton, two sons, Percy Jerome Holton, Jr. of King George, VA and Joseph Isaac Holton of Eglin Air Force Base, Eglin, FL, three daughters, Renee Antoinette Ennels of Leonardtown, MD, Rachel Marie Blado and Sophia Nicole Holton of Gerrardstown, WV, two sons-in-law, Douglas Ennels, Sr. and Michael Blado, seven grandchildren, Mykia Baldwin, Doug Ennels, Jr., Caterria Berry, Joshua Holton, Stephen Ennels, Caleb Blado and Jonathan Blade, one great grandchild, Aden Grant, five brothers, Joseph Holton, George Holton, Sr., Sylvester Holton, Daniel Holton, Sr. and Larry Holton, three sisters, Mary Bowman, Jacqueline Cole and Elsie Irene Ashton. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Otis Holton, Emmanuel Woodland and Leverne Holton. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The Family will receive friends on Saturday, February 19, 2005 in the Ebenezer Church, Mechanicsville, MD from 9; 30 a.m. until 11; 00 a.m. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11; 00 a.m. Interment will be on Thursday, February 24, 2005 at 2; 00 p.m. in the Maryland Veterans cemetery, Cheltenham, MD

Helen Lucille Foster
Helen Lucille Foster, 82, died February 18, 2005 at her home in Valley Lee, MD. Born April 23, 1922 in Washington, D.C., she was the eldest child of the late Joseph Earl and Dorothy Lucille Richards of Valley Lee, MD. She is survived by her beloved son, Charles Robert Foster and his wife Virginia of Valley Lee; two granddaughters and their husbands; Amber Lee and Charles Wood of Valley Lee and Jamie Ann and Jeff Daigle of Montross, VA and, her sister, Audrey Veronica Yates of Valley Lee as well as numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles “Pete” Foster and a brother, Joseph Earl Richards, Jr. Mrs. Foster was educated at Anacostia High School in Washington, D.C. and was an active member of Assumption Church, where she was married in 1947. She was employed at the Navy Yard as an executive assistant and later at the Naval Research Laboratory. She left her position as the Office Manager in the Photography Department to become a full time homemaker. Her hobbies and interests included spending time with her family, baking, playing cards and bingo and attending Church dinners. Mrs. Foster became an active supporter of Holy Face Church and Little Flower School after moving to Valley Lee in 1978. She continued baking and playing cards, but bingo was replaced with the nightly lottery and reading. In recent years, she was a member of St. George’s Catholic Church in Valley Lee which she attended regularly until her illness made it no longer possible. The family will receive friends from 10; 00 – 10; 30 AM on Friday, February 25, 2005 in St. Georges Catholic Church in Valley Lee where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10; 30 AM with Father Mark Ervin officiating. Interment will follow in the Maryland Veteran’s cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. Contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary’s, P. O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Bonnie Lee “Pig-A-Ma” Wathen
Bonnie Lee “Pig-A-Ma” Wathen, 88, of Mechanicsville, MD died February 17, 2005 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born April 26, 1916 in Whortonville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Maude Isabell and John Frank Slade, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Leonard Wathen, Jr. in Bushwood, MD on December 30, 1987 whom she married on January 1, 1935. She is survived by her children; Mary E. Rencher of Avenue, MD, Albert L. Wathen, Jr. of Abell, MD, Shirley M. Wood and Teresa A. Wood both of Mechanicsville, MD, Robert W. Wathen of Bushwood, MD, Paul B. Wathen of Valley Lee, MD, Joseph N. Wathen of Loveville, MD and Robertha L. Hill of Chaptico, MD; brothers and sisters; Donnie Knott of Valley Lee, MD, Selma Gass of Abell, MD, Ivy Bell McCann of Georgetown, DE and Susan Tossone of PA; 34 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her son, Ernest S. Wathen; her daughter, Annie B. Wathen; and, her brothers, Carl W. Slade and John F. Slade, Jr. Mrs. Wathen moved to St. Mary’s County in 1931 from Whortonville, NC. She was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting, canning, reading and entertaining her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Monday, February 21 in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home from 5; 00 – 8; 00 PM with prayers being said at 7; 00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 22 at 10; 00 AM in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Francis J. Early officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gary Wood, Charles C. Francis Bernard “John Farmer” Dent, Jr.
Francis Bernard “John Farmer” Dent, Jr., 85, of Morganza, MD died February 11, 2005 at Bayside Care Center. Born May 2, 1919 in Dentsville, MD he was the of the late Nanny Tolbert and Francis Bernard Dent, Sr. He was the loving husband of Rose A. Bush whom he married in Charles County, MD in 1939. He is survived by his children; Mary Ann Herbert and Elvis S. Dent both of Coltons Point, MD, Helen R. Herbert of Clements, MD, James W. Dent of Maddox, MD, Vivian D. Caudle, Ella E. Dent and Emma C. Dent all of Washington, DC, George R. Dent of Ft. Washington, MD, Thomas J. Dent of Morganza, MD, Rose T. Warren and Louis F. Dent both of Greenbelt, MD; brothers and sisters; Kathleen Brody of Washington, DC and Ethel Sistrong of New York; 26 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and 7 great - great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Francis B. Dent, III and an infant boy, brothers and sisters; Margaret Fenwick, Bernardine Fenwick, Edna Fenwick, Ella Price, Thomas Dent, James Dent and George Dent. Mr. Dent moved to St. Mary’s County in 1963 from Charles County, here he was self employed as a farmer, waterman and construction worker until his retirement in 2000. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 17 in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home from 9; 00 – 10; 00 AM, where a funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 10; 00 AM with Msgr. Brady officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Charles H. Armstrong, Joseph E. Dent, George R. Herbert, George T. Herbert, Tyrone Bannister and William B. Cynthia Lynn Schmucker Spak
Cynthia Lynn Schmucker Spak, 48, of Leonardtown, MD died on March 12, 2005 at her residence.
Born on March 5, 1957 at Patuxent River, MD, she was the daughter of Katherine L. Sharrow Schmucker of Lexington Park, MD and the late Lavon Eldon “Jim” Schmucker.
Mrs. Spak was a long life resident of St. Mary’s county, she was in computer sales and service. She enjoyed NASCAR and was a Dale Earnhardt fan. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Michael Martin Spak of Leonardtown, MD a daughter Tamara Lynn Spak of Callaway, MD, her sister Jennifer Sullivan of Lexington Park, MD and one granddaughter Destiny B. Spak Davis of Callaway, MD.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 17, 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 10; 00 a.m. in St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church, in St. Mary’s City, MD with Reverend Damian Shadwell as the celebrant. Interment will follow in St. James cemetery. Pallbearers for Mrs. Spak will be Steven Ulher, Paul Ulher, Charles Schmalgemeyer, Eric, Schmalgemeyer, Gregg Trent and Christopher Spak.

Denise Michelle Talley
Denise Michelle Talley, 52, of Piney Point, MD, died on March 10, 2005 at her residence.
Born on July 22, 1952 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter Patricia McGowan Crawford of Waldorf, MD and the late Leonard Crawford. Mrs. Talley had worked at the Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship in Piney Point, MD.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Raymond J. Talley, Jr., four daughters, Lisa Talley of Piney Point, MD, Eva Morgan of Harlem, GA, Catherine Talley of Norfolk, VA, Jessica Talley of Ft. Gordon, GA, three sons, Raymond Talley, III of College Park, MD, Christopher Anton of Oberland, OH, Edward Henderson of Valley Lee, MD, six grandchildren, a sister, Linda Erickson of Waldorf, MD, and two brothers, John Timothy Crawford of LaPlata, MD and Leonard Crawford of Fairfax, VA. She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers, Michael Crawford and Patrick Crawford.
The family received friends Monday, March 14, 2005 in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 in St. George Catholic Church, Valley Lee, MD. The Reverend John Worch, pastor of Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac, MD was the celebrant.
Interment will take place on March 22, 2005 in Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Ella May Brewer
Ella May Brewer, 91, of Hollywood, MD, died on March 12, 2005 in St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Leonardtown, MD.
Born on July 27, 1913 in Hollywood, MD, she was the daughter of the late Harry Hayes Joy and Alice May Dean Joy. Mrs. Brewer was a homemaker.
She is survived by a sister, Grace Binkley of Loveland, CO. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Louis Brewer, whom she married in Baltimore, MD on April 30, 1949, three sisters, Irva Henck, Violet Forrest, Emma Blann, two brothers, Franklin Joy and H. Chester Joy.
The family received friends on March 15, 2005 from 12 Noon until 1; 00 p.m. A Funeral Service was conducted on March 15, 2005 at 1; 00 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home Chapel in Leonardtown, MD. The Reverend Doctor Ira Fowler conducted the service. Interment followed in the Hollywood Church of The Nazarene cemetery, Hollywood, MD.

Raymond Samuel Runco
Raymond Samuel Runco, 74, of Leonardtown, MD, died on Friday, March 18, 2005 at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.
Born on July 8, 1930 in Arnold, PA, he was the son of the late Raymond A. and Hazel D. Craft Runco. Mr. Runco served in the United States Navy for 22 ˝ years before retiring. He attended Duquesne University, Pittsburgh and Fredonia State University of New York. He worked as a real estate broker and as a senior staff appraiser for both Maryland and Virginia. In addition, he was the founding member and first vice president of The Patuxent Air Test Museum, Co-Director of St. Mary’s County Three Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary, and a member of the original St. Mary’s County economic development commission, founder and original member of St. Mary’s County Technology Commission, member of Christmas in April Board of Directors since its creation, member Tri-County higher education task force, member of Southern Maryland Tourism Committee, president and life member of Friends of Historic St. Mary’s City, director and treasurer of St. Mary’s City Foundation, director St. Mary’s City Foundation and Friends, Member of St. Mary’s County three hundred and fiftieth anniversary beautification committee, Director and Vice President of St. Mary’s Home for the Elderly at Cedar Lane, and a 32 year member and past president of Lexington Park Rotary and Leonardtown Rotary.
He is survived by his wife, Patti Runco, whom he married in January 21, 1956 in Natrona Heights, PA, two children, Mary Lynn Stone and her husband Joe Stone of California, MD, and Amy Cullison and her husband Tommy Cullison of Ridge, MD, three granddaughters, Devin and Jenna Stone and Rachel Cullison, two sisters, Marlene Wagnor of New Kensington, and Virginia Daniels also of New Kensington.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Rose Marie Steffen.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 in the St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church at 12; 00 p.m. The Reverend Ray Schmidt was the celebrant. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Joe Stone, Tommy Cullison, Drew Cullins, Larry Steffens, and Pete Swiart. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Jack Gelrud and Judge Marvin Kaminetz.
Memorial contributions may be made to the O.P.I.S. Unit, c/o St. Mary’s Hospital, P.O. Box 527, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Lillian Rose Pinno
Lillian Rose Pinno, 75, of Great Mills, MD died on Saturday, March 19, 2005 at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C
Born on September 29, 1929 in Jersey City, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Robert William Mead, Sr. and Rose Pukit Mead.
Mrs. Pinno worked for Ridge Elementary School from 1978-1993. She was the organist for Callaway Baptist Church and was a Volunteer at Piney Point Elm School.
She is survived by three daughters, Krista Greenwell of Great Mills, MD, Erin Pinno of Great Mills, MD, Bonnie McGee of Summerville, SC, two sons, Keith Pinno of Charleston, SC, Roger Pinno of California, MD, a sister, Eileen Steward of Bowie, MD, and a brother, Robert W. Mead, Jr. of Boynton Beach, FL. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 7; 00 p.m. at SAYSF Bible Church, 16544 Rue Purchase Road, Lexington Park, MD. Interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Association, 6110 Executive Blvd. Suite 1010, Rockville, Maryland 20852.

Thomas Raymond “Fred” Hill, III, 46, of Lexington Park, MD died on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at his residence.
Born on November 5, 1958 in Leonardtown, MD, he is the son of Mary Cecelia Young Hill of Great Mills, MD and the late Thomas Raymond Hill, Jr.
He is survived by his wife Geneva Marsha Hill, four children, Latisha R. Hill of Lexington Park, MD, Toni D. Johnson of Lusby, MD, Quiana C. Hill of Loveville, MD and Thomas R. Hill IV of Lexington Park, MD, four sisters, Beverley Galloway of Camp Springs, MD, Diane Toney of Lexington Park, MD, Mary C. Young of Forestville, MD and Mary C. Hill of Great Mills, MD and five brothers, James I. Hill of Essex, MD, James I. Hill of Suitland, MD, Robert S. Hill of Lexington Park, MD, Francis X. Hill of Ridge, MD and John A. Hill of Great Mills, MD.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 from 10; 00 until 11; 00 a.m. at Park Hall True Holiness Church, Rt. 489, Park Hall, Maryland 20636. A Funeral Service will follow at Park Hall True Holiness Church. The Pastor Richard Sawyer will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Clinton Russell Souder, Jr.
Clinton Russell “Clint” Souder, Jr., 74, of Mechanicsville, MD died on March 19, 2005 in North Beach, MD. Born November 6, 1930, he was the son of the late Clinton R. and Thelma Beckert Souder, Sr. He is survived by his children, Phylis McCullough of Huntingtown, MD, Clinton R. Souder of Crofton, MD, Dana M. Pettie of Mechanicsville, MD, Shirley S. Bauer of Chesapeake Beach, MD and his step-children Mike Skogland of Williamsburg, VA and Joe Skogland of Norfolk, VA, 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Sarah O’Connell of Kensington, MD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen M. Souder, whom he married on December 15, 1961 in Washington, DC, a step-daughter, Denise Skogland and a brother, James Souder. Mr. Souder served four years in the U. S. Navy and was then employed as a supervisor for the C&P Telephone Company for 33 years until his retirement in 1985. Prayers for Mr. Souder were said in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Chapel on March 22, 2005 and a Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at 10; 00 AM in All Faith Episcopal Church, Charlotte Hall, MD with Rev. Jim Hunter officiating. Interment will follow in the Church cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Souder will be Mark Pettie, Chuck Bauer, Jamie Souder, Craig Souder, Glenn McCullough and Russell Souder.
