J. Elwood Murphy
YORK, Pa. - James Elwood Murphy of York, Pa., formerly of Easton, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Manor Care North Convalescent Home, West Manchester Township, Pa. He was 88.
Born Sept. 29, 1911 in Federalsburg, he was the son of the late Oliver Clayton and Alice Noble Murphy.
As a child, he moved with his family to Easton where he graduated from Easton High School in 1929.
For several years, he owned and operated Murphy's Dry Cleaning in Easton. During the early 1950s, Mr. Murphy entered the sales field and worked in paper products sales until retiring in the mid-1970s.
He moved to York, Pa. in 1994.
He had been a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Easton.
His wife, the former Catherine L. Hubbard, to whom he was married in 1932, died in February 1990.
Mr. Murphy is survived by a daughter, Alice C. Frey of York, Pa.; one son, James O. Murphy of Cambridge; one brother, Charles Murphy of Waukon, Iowa; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were held 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, where friends called one hour before the service. Burial was at Spring Hill cemetery, Easton.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 100 Peachblossom Road, Easton, Md., 21601.

Lucille D. Arhens
CHESTER - Lucille Dorothy Arhens of Chester died on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999 at the Colonial Manor home in Catonsville. She was 89.
Born on May 3, 1910 in Baltimore, she was the the daughter of the late Frederick Phillip and Lucille Trussell Miller Schuler.
She was a graduate of Western High School class of 1928. On July 2, 1930 she married Gilbert Bannister of Hickory, Md. He died in October 1963. In 1965 she married Raymond Weyrauch. He died in 1973.
She worked as a sales clerk at Hutzlers Department Store and Hochschild Kohn Department Store in Baltimore. She later worked as a clerk typist for Publicker Industries of Baltimore. She retired in 1973.
She married Courtice Donald Arhens, formerly of Cherry Hill, N.J., on April 14, 1979 and moved to Chester. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville.
Mrs. Arhens is survived by her husband Courtice Donald Ahrens of Chester; one son, Donald Schuler Bannister of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two stepsons, C. Donald Ahrens of Modesto, Calif. and William Garner Ahrens of Cherry Hill, N.J.; one daughter, Phyllis Abendschoen of Catonsville; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville. Interment will be private.

Ethel Marie Cotton
CHESTER - Ethel Marie Cotton of Chester died on Monday, Oct. 18, 1999 at her home. She was 35.
Born June 6, 1964 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Richard Melvin Sauers Sr. and the late Mary Annie Johnson.
She attended school in Glen Burnie.
She married Norman Cotton on June 29, 1991 and moved to Chester, where she was a homemaker and a seasonal employee of the Mount Hope Farm of Prospect Bay in Grasonville.
Mrs. Cotton was a member of the women of the Moose Chapter 1696 in Queenstown and the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post #40.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cotton is survived by her father, Richard M. Sauers Sr. and stepmother, Kathleen Marie Sauers, of Grasonville; two sons, William Sauers of Stevensville, and Robert Sauers of Chester; one stepdaughter, Denise Cotton of Baltimore; two brothers, Richard M. Sauers Jr. of Glen Burnie, and Albert F. Sauers Sr. of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Rose Marie Pleasant of Baltimore, Mary Annie Carper of Brooklyn, Md. and Donna Heffner of Brooklyn; a stepsister, Dawn Gant of Grasonville; one granddaughter, Carissa Em Sauers; and one step-granddaughter, Lynetta Cotton.
Services were held 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chester, where friends called Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Burial was in Cedar Hill cemetery in Baltimore.

Thomas Elson
STEVENSVILLE - Thomas Elson of Stevensville died at his home on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999. He was 77.
Born in Anne Arundel County on June 30,1922, he was the son of the late Frank and Irene Potts Elson. He was married to Beatrice C. Elson, who died on Jan. 6, 1997.
Mr. Elson was a member of the Masonic Order of Patapsco Blue Lodge and the Boumi Temple Shrine.
Mr. Elson is survived by his sister, Evelyn Elson of Baltimore, and one niece.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21 at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Glen Burnie.
Funeral arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester.

Arlene S. Scoon
ROCK HALL- Arlene Sue Scoon of Rock Hall died of heart failure on Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis.
Mrs. Scoon was born in Rock Hall and was a lifelong resident of the town. She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Margie Mcginnis. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Scoon was a former member of the Sgt. Preston Ashley American Legion Post #228 Ladies Auxiliary in Rock Hall and a member of the Rock Hall United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, J. Robert Scoon. A sister, Betty Hill, is deceased.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22 at the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Rock Hall, where friends may call after 6 p.m. Interment will be private.
Contributions may be made in her memory to the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company Ambulance Fund or Building Fund. P.O. Box 577, Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

Ivan L. Stubbs
CHURCH HILL - Ivan Leon Stubbs, formerly of Church Hill, died on Monday, Oct. 18, 1999 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown. He was 74.
Mr. Stubbs was born in Starkeys Corner in Queen Anne's County on June 9, 1925, the son of the late Thomas and Ruby Voshell Stubbs. He graduated from Church Hill High School in 1942 and worked on the family farm.
In 1952 he married Anne Churay of Massey, Md. They lived in Church Hill and continued to operate the family farm until 1985 when Mr. Stubbs retired. His wife of 45 years died on Jan. 30, 1998.
He was past State Skeet Shooting Champion. He received a Hall of Fame Award in 1998 by the Greater Eastern Shore Bowling Association for his outstanding performance as a bowler. He was a past member of the Church Hill Lions Club.
Mr. Stubbs is survived by a sister, Frances Stubbs Conley of Centreville, and a half sister, Helen Kirby Hammond of Bishopville. A half brother, William Roe, is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22 at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown, where friends may call one-hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Church Hill cemetery.
Contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association Eastern Shore Chapter, 212 W. Main St., Suite 202 C, Salisbury, Md. 21801. Funeral arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown.

LeRoy H. Tripp Sr.
GOLDSBORO - LeRoy Howard Tripp Sr. of Goldsboro died on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999 at the Shore Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Denton. He was 73.
Born on Jan. 30, 1926 at Goldsboro, he was the son of the late Edward and Nettie Kemp Tripp. His wife, Jean Dawkins Tripp, died in 1980.
Mr. Tripp served in the Army during World War II. He was employed by Saulsbury Brothers as a machine operator. Prior to that, he worked for Metal Craft in Smyrna, Del. He was a member of Greensboro VFW and former volunteer for the Greensboro and Goldsboro fire companies.
Mr. Tripp is survived by two sons, LeRoy "Lee" Tripp Jr. of Laurel, Del. and Timothy "Timmy" Mark Tripp of Greensboro; one stepson, William F. Mansfield of Henderson; one daughter, Linda S. Tripp of Greensboro; two stepdaughters, Patricia Perkins of Grasonville and Gloria Kelley of Laurel, Del.; two brothers, Edward Tripp of Dover Del. and Albert Tripp of Cordova; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Greensboro cemetery in Greensboro. Funeral arrangements are by the Fleegle & Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro.
