KENNEBUNKPORT - Charles J. Bennett Jr., 75, died unexpectedly the morning of March 17, 2003, Saint Patrick's Day.

He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Marie C. Bennett. They would have celebrated their 50th on May 11th.

He was predeceased by his parents, Charles J. Bennett Sr. and Marguerite K. Bennett.

Bennett; as well as 13 grandchildren, Nicholas, Jiliian Brianna, Kellen, Hannah, Nathan, Emily, Adrianna, Jack, Kacey, Caroline, William and Allie.

He was first and foremost a family man. He himself would tell you that he was just a regular guy; he was anything but. And he never forgot his roots. He grew up on Munjoy Hill, graduating from Portland High where he excelled in football, basketball, baseball and tennis. He often spoke of his experiences on "the hill" and the Portland Boys Club. His many athletic accomplishments spoke of his experiences included receiving the Vinall Trophy and attending a try-out for the Boston Red Sox in the summer of his junior year in high school; he was a member of the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame and the Maine Sports

Hall of Fame. He briefly attended Boston College, served in the Navy post World War II and completed his education receiving his bachelor's degree in economics from Bowdoin College.

In 1981, he launched Bennett's Store, a family enterprise that has served the community as a sandwich shop and small grocery and is now run by his two youngest sons, Paul and Mike. As an ardent Republican, he enjoyed trading volleys with his Democratic son-in-law.

He enjoyed politics and his family always told him jokingly that he should run for office. He was a communicant of the Franciscan monastery in Kennebunk attending daily mass.

He always considered himself the "luckiest guy in the world." He was a tremendous role model, particularly in guiding youth, as evidenced by visits from former students throughout his life. He has entered eternity but we are certain that his field of dreams will never end.
