Pauline Cronkite, 54

ARUNDEL - Pauline M. Cronkite, 54, of Portland Road, died suddenly March 18, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 8, 1949 in Lawrence, Mass., a daughter of Raymond and Marie (Kenny) Michaud. She was educated in Lawrence, Mass. schools, graduating from Sacred Heart High School with the class of 1966.

She was a volunteer for the Wildwood Fire Dept. in Kennebunkport, the Cape Porpoise Model Boat Race, a founding member of Hills Beach Association and Hills Beach Volunteer Fire and Rescue. A great grandmother extraordinaire, she was a seamstress, and enjoyed her family, camping, and reading.

Surviving are one son, Jonathan Cronkite of Melbourne, Fla.; two daughters, Jennifer Rice of Mendon, Mass., and Kimberly Cronkite of Breckenridge, Colo.; her mother, Marie Michaud of Georgetown, Mass.; two brothers, Raymond Michaud of Hickory, N.C. and Ronald Michaud of Methuen, Mass.; two sisters, Jeanne Michaud of Georgetown, Mass. and Anne Michaud of Glendale, Calif.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service was held at the Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Rebecca Ferguson, 84

GROTON, Conn. - Rebecca E. Ferguson, 84, formerly of Village Lane, Groton, Conn. and Wells, Maine, died March 18, 2003 at Greentree Manor.

She was born in New Haven, Conn., Feb. 7, 1919, the daughter of Harry and Indiana (Nourse) Bachelder. She married Harold A. Ferguson in Maine March 8, 1938; he died Feb. 3, 1983.

She is survived by one son, Nourse Ferguson of Waterford; two daughters, Karon Nichols of Groton and Sharron Kaiko of Mystic, Conn.; three brothers, Harry Bachelder Jr. of Ansonia, Herbert Bachelder of Montville and Nelson Bachelder of New London; three sisters, Doris Jandrok of Weldon, Calif., Jean Sherburne of York and Laura Hobbs of Kennebunk; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Avilla Towns.

A memorial service was held Saturday at the Thomas L. Neilan and Sons Funeral Home, New London, Conn. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

Gordon Hutchins, 79

EAST MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Gordon Hutchins, 79, a resident of East Middlebury, Vt., formerly of Cape Porpoise, died on Jan. 5, 2003. He was the husband of Frances (Wakefield) Hutchins.

Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at the Church on the Cape, Landsford Road, Cape Porpoise.

Should friends desire, memorial donation may be made to the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, PO Box 70289, Cape Porpoise, ME 04014 or to the Arundel cemetery Association c/o Cecil Benson, 163 Wildes District Rd., Kennebunkport, ME 04046, in Mr. Hutchins' memory.

Donald Galvin

KENNEBUNK - Donald J. Galvin of Pine Bluff, Cat Mousam Road, Kennebunk, passed away March 23, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center with his loving family at his side.

He was born in Millinocket on July 7, 1918, the youngest child of George and Ellen Galvin. He attended schools in Millinocket and the Brothers of Mary Seminary in New York City. In 1941 he entered the U.S. Army serving in the Medical Corps. Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, he was employed by Doctors' Hospital in New York City. He was employed by John Wanamaker's in New York, then moved to Philadelphia and worked at the Rittenhouse Plaza.

He enjoyed his vacations at home, especially in Kennebunk, where, during the summer, he was often a winner of dance contests at the Wells Casino. He was a self-taught musician who played a mean jazz piano. He returned to Kennebunk after major heart surgery in "Philly" to live with his sister, Mary. He formed many friendships over the years with those that cared for him and enabled him to live alone at Pine Bluff. Louise Hill, Dot Turner, Doug Rogers and Susie Eggenberger were just a few of these special people.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Daniel, John, George and Francis; three sisters, Catherine Michaud, Margaret Lesuer, and her twin sister, Mary Ellen Durgin; and nephews George and Patrick Galvin; one sister-in-law Marie Galvin; cousins, Mary and Margaret Whalen, Rose Jamo, Catherine Bonis and her husband, Charles, Michael Provenzano, husband of the late Patricia Provenzano, and Harry and Sharon Rush; nieces, Carole Ann Greely and her husband, George of Biddeford, Ellen Galvin of Millinocket, and Nancy Townsend of Lakeland, Fla. and husband Don and Catherine Jane Galvin of Portland; nephews, George Galvin and his wife Julie of Kennebunk, John Durgin and his wife, Nina of Thomaston, Paul Michaud of Millinocket, and Byron "Chuck" Lesuer and his friend Barry Doughty of Chebeague Island. He was like a father to his grandniece, Anne Marie Mustapha, who with husband, Morgan, gave him three great-grandnephews, Ryan, Patrick and Seamus. He was close to his other grandnieces, Shawna Durgin, who looked upon him as her special uncle, Lorilee Durgin Reuillard, husband Mark; Lisa and husband Bob Conn; and Shawna Galvin and grandnephew Peter Mark Cummings. He also leaves great-grandnephews Nicholas, Alexander and Spencer Reuillard.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at today at noon at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk, with Father Laurent LaPlante officiating. Internment will be in Millinocket later in the spring.

Kathleen O'Connell, 91

PORTLAND - Kathleen B. O'Connell, 91, widow of Augusta Atty. Frederick P. O'Connell, died March 6, 2003 in Portland.

She was born in Boston in 1911, the daughter of Henry P. and Alice Brady. She grew up in Milton, Mass. and attended schools in Milton and Boston.

In 1946 she and her husband moved to Kennebunkport where her husband established a private practice. The family later moved to Augusta, but continued to summer in Kennebunkport for many years.

She is survived by one daughter, Kiki of Portland; a goddaughter and niece, Phoebe Blake of Providence, R.I.; many beloved brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in Kennebunkport in the spring. Interment will be at the Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, Portland.

Diederik Osselaer, 57

KENNEBUNK - Diederik S. (Dirk) Osselaer, 57, a resident of Western Avenue, Kennebunk, formerly of Belgium, died March 18, 2003 at his home after a brief illness.

He was born in Geraardsbergen, Belgium on May 18, 1945, a son of Jozef and Marie-Louise (Van Bossuyt) Osselaer and attended Belguim schools. He graduated from college in Belgium where he received his degree in accounting, art and dental technician.

He came to Kennebunk in 1992 and was employed by Rainbow Rugs in Sanford for several years and also worked as accountant for Moore North America of Dover, N.H. for several years.

He was a mug member at the Federal Jacks of Kennebunk.

He enjoyed working with his hands, cooking, drawing painting, making jewelry and spending time with his family and friends.

His wife Colleen says that her husband's motto was "Don't throw anything away - it can be always used to fix something."

He is survived by his wife, Colleen (Hanson) Osselaer of Kennebunk; one son, Bart Osselaer and his wife Annik of Belgium; one daughter. Ilse O. Philbrick and her husband, Peter of Kennebunkport; two step-sons, Matthew and Christopher Tardiff, both of Kennebunk; three brothers, Jan, Erik, Geert Osselaer, and one sister, Gaby Osselaer, all of Belgium; several nieces, nephews; several brothers and sisters-in-law; three grandchildren, Kim and Levi Osselaer and Nina Marie Philbrick; and his America Family "The Woods" of York, Maine.

A Celebration of life memorial service was held Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with the Rev. Laurant Laplante officiating.

He has requested in lieu of flowers, that you plant your favorite flowers or put a bird feeder in your own garden in his memory. Other memorial donations may be made to the York Elks - Children Cancer Fund-raiser, York Elks Lodge 2788, PO Box 711, York, ME 03904, in Dirk's memory.

Viola Wells, 92

SACO - Viola Wells, 92, of Middle Street, died March 1, 2003, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born in York Harbor on Aug. 1, 1910, the daughter of Thurston (Mike) and Nettie (Skillings) Rounds and graduated from Samuel D. Hanson High School in 1929.

She and her husband, Clyde S. Wells, lived in Saco for 30 years while he worked in the former Saco-Lowell Shops. She was active in the Saco Board of Voter Registration. They retired to the Wells family homestead in New Gloucester in 1965, where both were active again in politics. She was also a homemaker and was interested in gardening.

She was a member of the New Gloucester Congregational Church, the Ladies Circle and the Historical Society. She moved back to Saco in 1984 and transferred to the Tory Hill Congregational Church in Buxton. Most recently, she lived in the Wardwell Apartments.

Her husband of 52 years died in 1981. A sister, Hazel R. Tripp, also died previously.

Survivors include one daughter, (Mrs. Donald) Hill of Bath; one sister, Rebecca Muslanski of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada; one granddaughter, Linda Hill of Auburn; one niece; and several cousins.

Roland Cronkhite, 90

BIDDEFORD - Roland F. Cronkhite Sr., 90, of Hills Beach Road, died Feb. 28, 2003 at St. Andre's Health Care Facility.

He was born July 20, 1912 in Blaine, a son of Charles and Mabel (Garcelon) Cronkhite, was valedictorian at his graduation from Aroostook Central Institute in Mars Hill in 1929 and graduated with a B.S. degree in chemistry from Bates College in 1933.

On Oct. 21, 1935, he married Gabrielle Auger of Biddeford. They spent 40 of their 67 years of marriage in Lewiston and the remainder at Hills Beach, where they had summered for many years.

He worked for 27 years as general manager for Lewiston Bottled Gas Co. and Louis P. Bail Oil Co. (Now AmeriGas Company).

He was a member and vice president of the L.P. Gas Association of Maine, New England and National and a member of the Maine Oil Dealers Association. He was a 25-year member of the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club and the Biddeford-Saco Rotary Club, where he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship and never missed a meeting until his illness. In addition, he was awarded honorary life membership in the Knights of Columbus after 36 years of service. He was also honored with the Silver Beaver Award, the Boy Scouts of America's highest award given for leadership.

He was a member of St. Andre's Church and a founding member of the Hills Beach Association and the Hills Beach Volunteer Fire Department, where he volunteered much of his time building the fire station. He was a board member of both organizations, as well as auditor for the Hills Beach Association. Family members say he was a gentle man who always had pleasant words to say about everyone and had a great sense of humor.

Two brothers, Gilbert and William, died previously.

Surviving are his wife; four sons, Dr. Roland Jr. of Biddeford and Bradenton, Fla., Richard of Lewiston, Roger of Westminster, Md. and Raymond of Biddeford; one sister, Hazel Farley of Wethersfield, Conn.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Rachel Boucher, 73

BIDDEFORD - Rachel "Rita" Boucher, 71, of Dartmouth Street, died Feb. 28, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 7, 1929 in Biddeford, a daughter of Joseph and Delphine (Gendreau) Mininni, and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1947.

She was a homemaker and raised her family. Later, she was employed by Kesslen Shoe in Kennebunk and Bruce Shoe for 10 years. She also worked at John Roberts for 11 years, retiring in 1993.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed crafts and sewing for her family.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.

Her brother, Tony Mininni, died previously.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Yvon A. Boucher; two sons, Ronald M. of Portland and Raymond R. of Lyman; one daughter, Denise Fournier of Biddeford; one brother, Roland Mininni of Biddeford; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Bernadette Dionne, 93

BIDDEFORD - Bernadette Dionne, 93, of Clifford Street, died March 1, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 25, 1910 in Biddeford, a daughter of George and Clara (Armstrong) Beauchesne, and was educated at St. Andre's School and St. Andre's High School.

On June 17, 1941, she married Melchior "Mike" Dionne at St. Andre's Church. He died in 1983.

She lived in Miami, Fla., for 49 years and had been a parishioner at St. James Catholic Church there. She was a Eucharistic Minister and was active in parish functions. She returned to Biddeford 10 years ago.

A daughter, Diane, died in 1991; a sister, Irene, died in 1992; and a brother, Roland Beauchesne, died in 1968.

She is survived by one sister, Pauline Beauchesne of Biddeford; and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley Eager, 78

WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Shirley M. Eager, 78, of Wakefield, died Feb. 24, 2003 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

Born and raised in Everett on July 24, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ethel (McClay) Prower.

A Wakefield resident for more than 50 years, she was a retired teacher and bus driver for the Canterbury School of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Wakefield.

She was an active member of the Emmanuel Church, a member of the Altar Guild and taught Sunday school for more than 20 years. She was also a member of the Tontoquon, Chapter 100, Order of Eastern Star.

She was the wife of the late Ralph J. Eager and is survived by her children, Diane E. Jones and her husband Charles, and Sandra L. Johnson and her husband Norman, all of Wakefield, Linda D. Doherty and her husband Frederick of North Andover, Deborah J. Heimbecker and her husband Richard of Wakefield, Ralph T. Eager and his wife Cathy of Kittery, and Karen S. Silver and her husband William, also of Wakefield; two sisters, Dorothy Prower and Lillian Cancellieri, both of Chelsea; and 13 grandchildren, Amy Lynch, Timothy and Melissa Johnson, Andrew and Jennifer Doherty, Richard and Amanda Heimbecker, Sean, Jamie and Christopher Eager and Bill, Jodi and Michael Silver.

A funeral service was held Saturday at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Wakefield. Interment was at Lakeside cemetery in Wakefield.

Hazel Emery, 88

ELIOT - Hazel Frances Emery, 88, formerly of Eliot, died March 1, 2003 at the Integrated Health Services of Derry, N.H.

She was born in West Lebanon, Maine, March 21, 1914, the daughter of Hiram and Mabel (Judkins) Johnson. She was a 1931 graduate of Lebanon Academy.

She cleaned homes in the York area for many years. She was a member of the Advent Christian Church of Portsmouth, N.H., and had lived in Eliot from 1963 until 1999, when she moved to Derry, she enjoyed sewing, needlepoint and making crafts.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur Nelson who died in 1956 and by her second husband, Raymond Emery who died in 1995. Members of her family include her son, Harold Nelson of Londonderry, N.H.; two daughters, Barbara F. Norton of Windham, N.H. and Judy S. Mercer of Ellington, Conn.; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Wednesday in the Advent Christian Church of Portsmouth, Portsmouth, N.H. Interment will be in the spring in First Parish Cemetery, York.
