James Russell, 83

OGUNQUIT - James B. Russell, 83, passed away on Feb. 27, 2003. He led a long and great life. He was born on April 18, 1919 in New York City.

He served as a sergeant in the 101st Calvary, Squadron A from 1939 to 1945.

He saw extensive combat in the European Theatre of Operations.

Upon his return from Europe he pursued his interest in the performing arts followed by a long career with Cartier in New York City and Palm Beach. During this time, "Jimmie and his bride," Joan Anderson Russell, raised four children, Victoria, Jocelyn, James and Stephen.

During his retirement he followed many of his interests in Palm Beach, Sante Fe and Ogunquit. He was a very energetic man when it came to his passions; the theater, photography, the opera, ballet, horseback riding, needle work, entertaining his friends, his property "Strawberry Fields" and his wife and family.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan (Anderson) Russell of Ogunquit; four children, James B. and Joanne Russell III of Roswell, Ga., Stephen and his wife Debi Russell of Anchorage, Alaska, Victoria and her husband Dr. Lawrence Boyle of Biddeford and Jocelyn Webster of Sanford, Fla.; one brother, John M. Russell of Avondale, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was a man of honor, integrity and courage, who lived and died with great dignity. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Services will be private. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Katherine Thompson, 82

KENNEBUNK - Katherine (DeLong) Thompson, 82, of Bradford Court, died on Feb. 19, 2003 at her residence.

She was born in Evanston, Ill., a daughter of Willard and Lena DeLong. She moved to West Hartford, Conn. with her family when she was in eighth grade. She attended Bates College where she met and married Richard Thompson of Auburn.

Following his tour in the Navy, they returned to West Hartford. He predeceased her in 1966.

She was involved in town politics and zoning issues, and held a real estate license until she was 79, working for DeWolfe Agency in West Hartford. In 2001 she moved to Kennebunk to be near family. She was always interested in art and architecture, traveled extensively and loved driving around Maine to look at all the houses, and along the coast to see Maine's many colors.

She is survived by two daughters, Wendy Noyes and her husband Jim of Biddeford and Beth Thompson of Redding, Calif.; two sons, Buzz Thompson and his wife Shirley of San Francisco, and Douglas Thompson of Hawaii; three grandchildren, Christy Britton and Tim Britton of Los Angeles, and Sophia Thompson of San Francisco; and two sisters, Mary Frances Ramsdell of Highland Lakes, N.J., and Carolyn Desmond of Claryville, N.Y.

There will be a memorial service at the Church on the Cape, Cape Porpoise, at 2 p.m. on April 25.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Thompson Fund, c/o Bates College, Lewiston, ME 04240.

Thelma Lein

KENNEBUNK - Thelma C. (Tarr) Lein, daughter of Carl M. Tarr and Gladys A. Dorr, died at Atria in Kennebunk on March 25, 2003. She had been a resident there for four years. She previously resided at Kennebunk Beach, Maine and Lynnfield, Mass.

She was born in Orland, Maine on July 4, 1915. She graduated from high school in Madison, Maine and attended Curry Dramatic School in Boston, Mass.

She worked as a director of small theatre productions. She was also active in real estate speculation in Massachusetts.

She was married to Ralph H. Lein who predeceased her in 1999.

She was the owner of the Fife and Drum Shop on Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport. She loved to collect old dolls and had a doll and toy room in her shop.

She is survived by one daughter, Carla Lein Perkins of Kennebunk; one son, Stephen R. Lein of Germany; two grandchildren, Stephanie P. Clifford of Cape Elizabeth, and Christopher M. Perkins of Raleigh, N.C.; and five great-grandchildren.

A small memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at 22 Beach St., in Kennebunk.

Dorothy Record, 89

KENNEBUNK - Dorothy D. Record, 89, a resident of Kennebunk, formerly of Belleville, N.J., died March 29, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford after a brief illness.

She was born in Bronx, New York City, N.Y. on Oct. 28, 1913, a daughter of Peter and Nellie (Mattia) Marchesani and attended schools there.

She and her late husband moved to Maine in 1972 from Belleville, N.J. She was a homemaker, enjoying cooking, dancing, movies and spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clayton Record, who died in 1982 and her three brothers Vincent, Michael, Alfred Marchesani.

She is survived by her three sons, Albert Record of Highland Park, N.J., Clayton Record Jr. of Kennebunk, and Ronald Record of Bloomfield, N.J.; one daughter, Shirley Duva of Kennebunk; one brother, Albert Marchesani of Toms River, N.J.; three sisters, Phyllis Comey of S.C., Gloria Tierney and Esther Sicignand, both of Toms River, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and also several nieces and nephews survived her.

A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at Levandoski Funeral Home, 44 Bay St., Bloomfield, N.J. Internment will be in Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, N.J.

Verna Brown, 64

ALFRED - Verna Jean Brown, 64, of Pine Cone Drive, passed away March 26, 2003 in Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover, N.H., after a brief illness.

She was born in Portland, Maine, Nov. 20, 2003, daughter of Vernon Jr. and Ruth Edna (Beal) Meader. She was a 1957 graduate of North Berwick High School and lived in town for many years.

She had worked in the Medical Records Department of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years, before retiring in December 2002. She attended the Alfred Parish Church. Her hobbies include crafting, sewing and crocheting; but her favorite was being "Grammy" to her eight grandchildren.

She will be sadly missed by her two sons, Matthew Brown of Wells and Jay Brown of Cape Neddick; two daughters, Marjorie Sharp of Hampton, Va., and Janice Babcock of Shapleigh; one sister, Marjorie Chandler of Boise, Idaho; and her eight grandchildren.

A private family service was held Saturday at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. A memorial service was held Saturday at the Alfred Parish Church, Alfred, with Rev. Bruce Burnham officiating.

Alice Soule, 91

KENNEBUNKPORT - Alice Louise (Magnant) Soule, 91, formerly of Waban, Mass. and Kennebunkport, Maine, died March 25, 2003 in Woodland, Calif.

She was born June 7, 1912, to Emma (Gooding) Tucker and Charles Emanuel Magnant in Franklin, Vt., and later moved to the Boston area. As a youth she excelled academically and received the highest honor in the Girl Scouts, the Golden Eaglet, and a full scholarship to Bridgewater State Teachers College. She did postgraduate work at Boston University and taught first grade for five years at Merrymont School in Quincy. In 1939 she married Frank Lewis Soule, a civil engineer, moved to Newton Highlands and then to Waban where they raised their five children.

After her husband's untimely death, she moved to Kennebunkport where she became involved in many civic and charitable groups and clubs. Among them were The Church on the Cape, Audubon Society, Kennebunkport Historical Society, Retired Teachers Association, Pine Tree Twigs, Webhannet and the Olympian Club. She loved to travel and took many trips to see her children and friends.

Survivors include her five children, Martha Estey of Delray Beach, Fla., Barbara Palmer and her husband, Bill, of Woodland, Calif., Charles Soule and his wife, Sharon, of Kennebunkport, Walter Soule and his wife, Diane, of Bolton, Mass., and Kathryn Silva and her husband, John, of Holliston, Mass.; 13 grandchildren, John, Gregory and Matthew Breen, John and Danielle Silva, Meghan, Erika, Stephen and Elizabeth Soule, all of Massachusetts, Christopher Alicia and Tucker Soule of Kennebunkport, and Seth Soule of Washington, D.C.; great-grandchildren, Trevor Breen, her brother, L. Charles Magnant and wife, Betty of York and Highland Beach, Fla.; and longtime friend Richard Lowe of Bradenton, Fla.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Lewis Soule, in 1972, and her sister, Blanche Hanninan in 2002.

A graveside service was conducted at Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley, Mass. on Wednesday. A memorial service followed at the Church on the Cape in Cape Porpoise.

The family requests memorials be directed to the Church on the Cape, PO Box 7663, Cape Porpoise, ME 04014 or the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of J.S. Waterman and Sons, in Wellesley, Mass.

Clara Merrifield, 84

WELLS - Clara E. Merrifield, 84, of Wells, a longtime resident of Sanford-Springvale, died March 16, 2003 in Potsdam, N.Y.

She was born in Raymond on Oct. 11, 1918, a daughter of Freeland and Abbie (Strout) Edwards. She attended Raymond schools, and graduated as class valedictorian from the former Casco High School.

A resident of Wells since 1983, she was a longtime resident of Sanford-Springvale during which time she was employed with the former Allied Shoe shops in Springvale, retiring in 1967.

She had also been a member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church and was a member and past president of The Gleaners.

She enjoyed traveling, having visited many areas of the United States, the British Isles, Australia and New Zealand. She was an avid reader and enjoyed photography. She had been a Girl Scout leader in years past.

Family members recalled that she was a most attentive mother, and a very curious woman, always looking to increase her knowledge through her reading and travels.

Her husband, Dana W. Merrifield, died in 1973.

Survivors include four daughters, Carol M. McDonald of Sanford, Bonnie M. Dubois of Selden, N.Y., Cheryl Young of Canton, N.Y., Kathy M. Cornish of Wells; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held March 20 at the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, Sanford. Burial will be in the spring in Deering Neighborhood Cemetery, Springvale.

Jessie Chace, 86

KENNEBUNK - Jessie Chace, 86, a resident of Kennebunk, died March 22, 2003 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was the widow of Kenneth V. Chace.

She was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England on Nov. 15, 1916. She was one of six children of James and Mary (Holden) Wilcock. In 1926, she immigrated to United States with her family, and settled in the New Bedford, Mass. area. She graduated from Westport High School in Westport, Mass. She married Kenneth Chace in September 1939. The couple resided in Lewstown, Pa. until 1942, when her husband enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve. They moved to Marion, Mass. shortly after the end of World War II, where they lived for 36 years. She became a U.S. citizen in 1974. Upon her husband's retirement from Berkshire Hathaway Inc., they moved to Kennebunk in 1985.

She was a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. While living in Marion, she was an active member of the First Congregational Church and volunteered at Penny Pinchers, the church's consignment shop. She enjoyed swimming, and with her family was a member of the Piney Point Beach Club in Marion for many years. She and her husband became members of Christ Church in Kennebunk after moving to Maine, and she was a member of the former Webhannet Women's Club of Kennebunk.

She also enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, and was an avid reader. One of her favorite activities was knitting sweaters for her children and grandchildren and sewing outfits for her daughter, Pamela. She was a good cook, providing many loving meals for her family. She was also a dutiful first mate, spending many hours accompanying her husband, Kenneth on his boat, the Cutlass II.

She is survived by three sons, Kenneth V. Chace of Madison, Va., Brian D. Chace of Grayling, Mich., and Peter C. Chace of Kennebunk; one daughter, Pamela M. Partow of Windham; two brothers, Joseph Wilcock of South Bristol, Maine and Walter Wilcock of Brewster, Mass.; and six grandchildren, David, Amanda, Daniel, Melvin, Amy and Bill.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Christ Church, Dane Street, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire, donations in Mrs. Chace's memory can be made to the Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main St., Kennebunk, ME 04043.

William Chick, 74

WELLS - William W. Chick, 74, of Atlantic Avenue, Wells, died March 30, 2003 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after suffering a massive heart attack and complications following bypass surgery on Jan. 22. He was the husband of Anne F. Chick.

He was born in Kittery, Sept. 28, 1928, the son of Philip P., and Anna (Morse) Chick of Kittery. He attended Kittery schools and graduated from the Robert W. Traip Academy class of 1948. He served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sargent in Korea. He was a former resident of Somersworth, N.H. He was employed at General Electric in Somersworth as a purchasing agent and retired in 1989. He was a communicant of Saint Mary's Parish in Wells. He enjoyed the ocean and its ever-changing surf, gardening and woodworking.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Philip P. Chick Jr. of Darlington, S.C. and Robert C. Chick of Kittery.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anne (Flanagan) Chick and his daughter Kathleen Anne Chick, both of Wells.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday at St. Mary's Church, Wells, with the Rev. Joseph Ford officiating.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to a charity of ones choice in Mr. Chick's memory.

Robert Vadnais Jr.

BIDDEFORD - Robert (Bobby) Vadnais Jr., had been a resident of Darlington, S.C., for the past 13 years. He was a master carpenter who lived life to the fullest and enjoyed refurbishing homes, including his own.

He is survived by his mother, Sandra M. Carroll of Sarasota, Fla.; his father, Robert Vadnais Sr., of Buxton, Maine; two sisters, Susan Lynn Walton and husband Mark of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Lori-Ann Antonides and husband William of Marietta, Ga.; two brothers, Michael W. Vadnais and wife Lori Kay of Siesta Beach, Fla., and Mark J. Vadnais and fiancˇe of St. Petersburg, Fla.; grandfather, Kenneth Penney of Kennebunk; two daughters, Kayla and Karen Vadnais of Springvale; aunts, Marilyn (Penny) Welch, of Cary, Ill., Deanna (Penney) Ross of Wells, Joyce (Penney) Walz of Sanford, Sandra Vadnais Harvey of Kennebunk, and Linda Vadnais Pettis of Arundel; one great-aunt, Lillian Penney; two uncles, Gerald Vadnais Jr., and Richard Vadnais Jr.; many nephews, cousins, and relatives and friends, Nick and Matt Walton, Christopher Antonidies and Michael T. Vadnais Jr., who will truly miss and always remember him beyond words.

The funeral service was held March 1 at The Palms Memorial Park in Sarasota, Fla.

Alfred Woodman, 82

KENNEBUNKPORT - Alfred B. Woodman, 82, of Kennebunkport, died March 28, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born in Sanford, on July 25, 1920. His parents were Kenneth and Marguerite Woodman. He graduated from Sanford High School in 1939 where he was known as "Woody" and was a star on the basketball and baseball teams. He struck out 23 players in one game and was named to the Portland Telegram League, All-Star Baseball Team three straight years. He was invited to try out with the Boston Red Sox, but World War II intervened.

He served with the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army and was seriously wounded in Northern Italy and awarded the Purple Heart. After a lengthy recovery he returned home and worked on the construction of the Maine Turnpike.

In the late 1940s he pursued an education and career in textiles beginning work with Goodall-Sanford. After the closing of the mills in Sanford, he moved his family to Clarksville, Va., working for Burlington Industries. Returning to New England he held positions with Geigy Chemical, Sandoz and BASF before retiring in 1987. He continued working in textile sales until recently. He was an active member of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists for 50 years.

He was married to Eleanor (Warner) Woodman, a native of Kennebunkport for 45 years. She died on June 30, 1991. They loved their family, their community, and dancing to big band music. He was committed to his family and is survived by three sons, Robert, and his wife Mary of Kennebunkport, William, and his wife Shiela of Simsbury, Conn., and Richard, and his wife, Kristen, of Kennebunkport; five grandchildren, Robert C. Woodman, of Boston, Sara Yentsch of Boothbay Harbor, James Woodman of Savannah, Ga., Silas Woodman of Kennebunkport, and Hiedi Woodman of Simsbury, one grandchild, Ella Yentsch, and a brother Lloyd "Red" Woodman of Sanford.

At his request there will be no memorial services; the family will privately remember. Donations may be made in his memory to: Kennebunkport Public Health, PO Box 367, Kennebunkport, ME 04046 or to: Arundel Cemetery, PO Box 11, Kennebunkport, ME 04046.
